This escalated quickly... but I have to agree. Opinion doesn't mean anything. Facts are the ONLY thing that matter here. Here are some facts... from the lawsuit against Musclegene (the makers of GenePro) "MuscleGen's claim that its GenePro product has 30 grams of protein in a 1 tablespoon serving size and its use of the term "medical grade" are likely to mislead and cause confusion among consumers in that the stated protein amount is false, and there is no "medical grade" protein standard provided by the protein powder industry or the FDA. Further, SI03 faces irreparable harm, as the continuing false advertising of MuscleGen's products that compete with SI03's products poses a risk to SI03's sales and reputation. Conversely, MuscleGen has no protectable interest in continuing to falsely advertise its GenePro products. Finally, the Court finds that the public interest is served by preventing Defendant MuscleGen from misleading consumers to believe that a one tablespoon serving size of GenePro contains 30 grams of protein when the actual amount of protein is 10 grams or less." https://www.leagle.com/decision/infdco20171213e89 So anyone's "Opinion" that GenePro is a good protein doesn't sway from the fact that people taking it are assuming 30 grams of protein when they are getting less than 10.... that's a dangerous assumption to make or to impose on anyone. In a WLS situation where getting 1/3 less protein then you are counting can cause some very harmful results. Personally I don't give a rats ass what you take for protein... but don't blindly tell people something is good, without also giving them the facts of the matter.... this protein DOES NOT contain as much protein as is advertised. You can't squeeze more grams of a protein into less total grams of product... It's just not possible. IE you can't fit 10 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket. So let's take a step back... clearly the difference between telling folks the truth and telling folks an opinion is vastly different and anyone getting upset over the truth... needs to reevaluate things.

And yes there are a lot of sketchy protein powders and we should be quite picky about the ones we use! But not all are sketchy. You need to make educated choices about which you use. And not all doctors recommend leaving them behind. Your generalizations are inaccurate. I never told anyone to not take Genepro. I let grown ups make their own choices. I do suggest they have all the information though and when people ask for ideas and recommendation I like to give information not just suggestions.

Please send any links to independent studies. The one linked up thread was paid for by the manufacturers of Genepro.

A. That study was done by and paid for by the company that manufactures Genepro. We call that if the industry a conflict of interest. B. Serum (blood) levels of protein do not show that dietary protein is adequate. There is no blood test that shows that. Protein in the blood is a measure of liver and kidney function.

Unflavored Protein

https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/results/NCT02919657?sect=X70156#outcome1 These are the blood draws that show you can still meet your protein goals on GENEPRO. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/alexmorrell/2015/03/12/lawsuits-say-protein-powders-lack-protein-ripping-off-athletes/amp/ And this shows just how many protein brands add other ingredients and claim them as protein. I guess nothing can be easy for us WLS patients huh? 🤷♀️ -
Unflavored Protein
moondoggie1983 replied to debbie89's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
11 grams in the small scoop is still impressive, especially when it mixes better than anything else I’ve seen and the reviews have labeled it completely flavorless (except for some people suffering from synesthesia). I don’t understand why so many people have such a big deal about this. It’s not harmful in any way. Plenty of NUTs recommend it. If you’re struggling with getting in the shake version of protein, like I am, and the RTD’s are gross (which I think they are) GENEPRO could be for you. It seems to mix well with anything from water to Mac and cheese from the videos I’ve seen. It would be one thing if you’re trying to cram as much protein as possible into one small dose, but that’s not what the selling point is to me. Also, like I said, the independent studies done show that there is protein in it. All protein powder can be sketchy anyway, which is why most doctors want patients to wean off it and use food instead. They include ingredients that are not protein and try to say they count towards protein. I’m not looking for a fight, but if you’re looking for a flavorless protein powder, this seems to be the best. If you’re just trying to cram a bunch of protein in with one dose, then you’re looking for something different. Since the OP didn’t mention wanting to get a huge amount of protein and just that they wanted a truly flavorless powder, I suggested the GENEPRO. -

I also use the Unjury, but I’m considering the GENEPRO. I’ve seen labs that have been drawn that were GENEPRO vs regular and the GENEPRO labs actually did have more protein in the blood than the others. Not a drastic amount, but every little bit counts. My advice is to do your own research before you don’t consider GENEPRO at all. There are a lot of independent studies out there. -
My nut and my surgeon both recommended genepro. It’s the only thing I’ve been able to tolerate. I really like it and have had no problems with it.

Trying out Genepro- 9 days post op DS

We all learn these things one way or another. I thought Genepro was a genius find. Thankfully I was on this forum and was straightened out by one of the vets. -

Quest unflavored is my jam. Genepro is quite controversial. Do your homework and make an informed choice before trying it.

Genepro from gnc. Has totally replaced my shakes.

First 2-3 days were definitely awful. I literally dreamt about food. I don't hate my protein shakes but I don't like how much I had to drink. I ended up making a lot of soup and just adding Genepro flavorless protein powder in (60 calories w/ 30g of protein). That helped a ton. Though admittedly I was on a 2 wk pre-op liquid and 2 wk post-op liquid and I still can't stomach the idea of soups anymore.

Trying out Genepro- 9 days post op DS
Danny Paul replied to Glamgirl's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I inquired about Genepro on the boards and a poster (big viffer) gave valuable info on it . Unfortunately I dont know how to paste it here but basically Genepro cannot deliver 30grams of protein as advertised I also believe they have legal problems based on thier claims. As postop says concentrate on liquids at this point. Not doing what's popular just doing what's Right. -
Any newbies struggling to get all their protein in?
xoxococojay replied to xoxococojay's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
One thing i tried that i love are breakfast parfait's. I use fage 0% fat plain greek (taste awful by itself, it's very tart) and i add a scoop of gnc vanilla protein to it. And top it with my favorite berries. (If you want to add rolled oats on top for a granola like effect knock yourself out) -instant 45g of protein right there. -premier caramel a scoop of any flavor protein powder and caramel flavored coffee - instant 50g of protein - i've added genepro to sauces, dressings etc I've done fruit flavored greek yogurt mixed with any ready to drink protein and blended it with berries and ice for about 50g of protein. -loco moco over cauliflower rice (pinterest) using 93% lean ground beef, 1 egg and a few tbs of egg whites. (Almost 50g of protein) I'll add as i think of other things i've done recently. -
I think I figured it out
Yadifan replied to moondoggie1983's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I couldn’t tolerate shakes after surgery and still can’t. I went to gnc and bought genepro. I mix it in with my water and some crystal light flavoring and that’s what I use instead of shakes. -
Not eating soft foods yet! Exhausted and can’t get all protein in
bobt1 replied to amartinez8853's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Protein can be added to soups. Lots of Soups go easily in the blender. I used mostly canned vegetable and veg beef. Also made a homemade Soup called "Souper easy Mexican Bean Soup" that was great, wife liked it very much without the blending. Recipe out on internet. I would simply blend up enough for 3-4 servings and package them in individual servings of say 4-5 oz each. Baby oatmeal or even blended regular oatmeal works real well. Cottage cheese became a favorite even blended with some No Sugar added peaches. Pureed tuna salad and chicken salad worked real well. I think a key is finding a truly "No Flavor and taste free" Protein that you can add to anything. I tried several of the non-flavored versions of brand Proteins but they always added some vanilla taste to anything I mixed them with. Didn't always go well as I did throw more than 1 item away. I finally found GENEPRO, a truly tasteless Protein Powder. You can mix 1 TBsp of the powder for 30 gm protein into plain Water with no taste. While it seems much more expensive per ounce it really isn't per serving. I usually add 1 or 2 tsp (10gms protein each) to things I need or want more protein from with no change in taste. Bottom line, I can now add protein to anything I want to, even my decaf coffee. -

They have it in Chocolate, Vanilla and Caramel. I've only tried the chocolate but for under six bucks it's not bad. Just wanted to tell you when you do see it grab what you can because they don't seem to last long on the shelves! I also get the Premier Protien bars peanut butter chocolate ones. They're great 30 grams of protein and they help my calorie intake. I'm just under 7 months out and when I'm calorie deficient I get a little weak hear and there so they're a great add. Genepro from GNC also helps on the days I'm sick of pre-made drinks. It can be added to anything. It's flavorless and I've used it in broths and other things.

VSG on 4/16/18: My journey
TexasMommy80 replied to TexasMommy80's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am currently living out of a hotel and I am bored to death. I miss my baby girl and boyfriend, and I am ready to be home with them. Anyhow, the puréed stage is going really well. I’ve had applesauce, oatmeal and puréed chicken tortilla Soup. My surgeon said that he has never heard or seen of a leak after four weeks, so I hit my four weeks next Monday. I have so much anxiety about that, and I know that there are people on here that had later leaks, but I feel like 4 weeks is a good time to stop worrying so much. Outside of that, I did have my first instance of eating too fast. I came up to my hotel room and ordered chicken tortilla soup. It was so good and I ate too fast. Luckily I didn’t eat too much, but I was miserable for a good half hour. Another thing is that I am surprised at how little of an appetite I actually have. I have not been hungry since having the soup (at 2:30), and it is 10:30 now. I just forced myself to have a little applesauce because I am getting so few calories. I can’t do Protein Shakes anymore so I have been depending on GENEPRO this week. I am going to buy some syntrex nectar next week and give that a try. Diarrhea, anyone? [emoji51]
TexasMommy80 replied to AngelaZ's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I developed severe lactose intolerance after my VSG. I had horrible diarrhea and my heart rate would increase. I tried the lactose pills and they helped a bit, but not nearly enough. I now drink muscle milk and use genepro. I know GENEPRO is controversial and I am probably not getting the Protein that they claim (or equivalency), but I wanted to give it a try and see how it goes for me.
