    Does Eating Get Any Easier?

You are right on target. I'm five weeks out now and finally can eat 4 ounces of yogurt and cottage cheese, but most anything else is still only 2 or 3 ounces (especially dense foods). I added some avocado to my cottage cheese now too (LOVE cottage cheese) and that's really helped with adding some good flavor. But to me, it feels so good to even have just a small amount of something that really tastes good. The Mushie stage was boring to me because there wasn't much I could add to vary the taste buds. Once you get on regular food, hopefully you'll feel better even though you'll still be eating small portions. Hang in there!
  2. Try Orgain organics premixed high Protein or their Protein powder. I actually used CVS whey protein and mixed it with Almond Breeze almond milk and Fage 0% greek yogurt. I tried premiere protein and found it much too sweet. It may be too much sugar giving you digestive issues.

    May Sleevers

I still use 1 Protein shake a day, but I eat egg whites, tilipia, chicken, greek yogurt, etc. I walk but I'm not really pushing myself yet. I need to up the intensity some but I'm enjoying it the way it is now.

    I'm STARVING!

My doctor requires 1 week of clear liquid. 2-3 full 3-6 puree and after 1st fill in 6wks I can do soft. My week will be up Thursday after my Dr appt. I can't wait to add some variety. I'm going to plan me a menu weekly and place on fridge so I can keep my self accountable. I love cream of wheat so I will take that for breakfast, soup for lunch and yogurts for dinner. I'm ready.

    I'm STARVING!

Kell, same here. I was banded on the 13th too, healing fine, and getting hungry. Six weeks full liquids now. My NUT called today so I asked her how to make this doable. She said my surgeon likes a big weight loss during these six weeks so basically, tough it out. I can have soups, so before I left work I drank an Ensure Clear for protein, and when I got home, I walked the treadmill and then modified my own soup. I used organic black bean soup in the blender with about a handful of frozen peas. Heated it up and it was heavenly. Just that extra thickening from the pureed peas is satisfying me now. I have a feeling that my blender will be my friend for the near future. Oh, today I realized that even the pudding and yogurt I was eating wasn't getting a chance to satisfy me because I've been sipping water nonstop all day. Back to no liquids after eating for half an hour, even if eating is also a liquid. Seems obvious now, but I didn't notice it was flushing those foods through faster. So when I waited after pudding today to drink water, I stayed satisfied longer. Hope this helps.

    Muscle pain

I got a little bit of cramping and increased my potassium intake via adding in some avocado and bananas to what I was already eating. For example, I'd put avocado in egg, or banana with my yogurt. I don't know if the muscle pain you're getting is from cramps, exercise, or just general pain, so I don't know if that'll help. The only time I've taken magnesium citrate is for constipation, and that was pre-surgery. If the pain is a constant, I'd call the doctor.

Difficult time losing weight before pre op appointment

Hey everyone So I've been doing a mostly liquid diet since Monday the 29th. The first day I had a headache and I wanted to eat so bad! The second day I didn't have a headache, but I became very irritable around lunch time. It's only been 4 days but I have already lost about 4-5 lbs, Yay! I'm getting the hang of it now, and I honestly don't feel like i'm starving. If I do eat a small amount, I just make sure it's something healthy, low cal and low carb. I've cut out soda all together and I'm feeling good - no longer really craving it. Here is an idea of how I've been eating .... Monday - breakfast: Meal replacement shake mixed with 1 cup of 2% milk, Lunch: chicken Soup broth only, Dinner: Half cup of chili and half cup of vanilla yogurt. Tuesday - breakfast: Meal replacement shake mixed with 1 cup of 2% milk, Lunch: 1 piece of grilled chicken, Dinner: beef broth and half cup of vanilla yogurt with some granola. Wed - breakfast: meal replacement shake with 1 cup 2% milk, Lunch: 1 cup of tuna salad, Dinner: 2 slices of pizza Thurs - breakfast: meal replacement shake with 1 cup of 2% milk and 1 small sausage patty, Lunch: Nothing, Dinner: 1 cup of sauerkraut and half cup of Tysons canned cooked white meat chicken. Keep in mind during the day's i'm also drinking lots of Water, some with crystal light and some unsweet tea with splenda. I've been trying to keep my calories around 1,000.
  10. I drink up until my first bite as well and typically wait at least 45 minutes before drinking anything more then a sip to rinse my mouth. Immediately post op for the first month I used the Bariatric Advantage Protein powder, but have after I got on soft foods, I switched to a single ready to go Protein shake (Premier Protein from Costco) which I drink halfway between Breakfast and lunch. I didn't puree anything either (puree actually wasn't on my plan) - for me it was 3 days of Clear liquids, then 2 weeks of full liquids, then 2 weeks of soft foods, then back to regular food as tolerable. As far as Snacks, at this stage I find I do need to snack a bit between meals in order to get in my recommended protein. A snack for me is usually something like a cheese stick or a Danon Light and Fit yogurt (12g protein,80 cal!) My surgery team didn't outlaw caffeine out right, just to cut back. Immediately after surgery I didn't have any caffeine until I was on regular foods. At this point I usually have one Americano every other day or so. I use Crystal light powder or other flavor liquids in my Water.. post op I find I can't drink water as well when it is plain. For movies, I only get a water, and maybe take in a Protein Bar and eat half of it. I'm staying away from popcorn until I get to my goal.

    4 Weeks Post Op

Down 15 pounds ! Almost in the 170's. Still having mashed food, so far potato, rutabaga, carrots. And I tried soft chicken today. I could of had more but I didn't want to overdue it because I also had some mashed veggies with it. I also been having greek yogurts, puddings, liquid protein shakes. Trying to stay away from soups and broths. Tired of it lol. I also started my vitamins today. My b12 strips are mint flavour and nasty for a few mins then becomes tolerable, then once I have a drink its fine. Its a challenge when I eat food I just want to gobble it all up. Funny thing I still don't feel actual normal hunger. Also my stomach bugles like crazy when I have solids. people can actually hear the gurgling. Incisions are healing. 2 of them are slightly open but slowly closing up.

I am eating my first aygg!

Isn't it nice to get a taste of the real world? Did it go down ok? I hope so!!! I've been eating eggs, Beans, turkey, chicken, carrots, green beans, yogurt, some soft fruit, but the only thing I can finish at this point is the egg or yogurt. Let me know how you do when you start eating more...it all tastes very good, but I'm stressed over not eating the right amounts!

I am eating my first aygg!

I had greek yogurt for my first puree food (3 weeks out) and a half a turkey sausage link for my first soft food. Both were great but I couldn't eat very much of the sausage! I thought I was going to eat the whole link (this is one of those small frozen breakfast links, not a big link) but I could only manage half. It was delicious and very satisfying though. I had a poached egg for one of the first things I had on puree and it was so delicious with just a little bit of salt and pepper.
  14. I shoot for 80 - 100G and routinely do it in under 500 calories. The key is protein dense foods. Here’s a typical menu for me (I’m pretty boring so I eat almost the same thing every day and like it): .5c egg whites with .5 oz mozzerella cheese (17g protein, 106 calories) 3.5 oz chicken (28g protein, 105 calories) 3.5 oz of chicken for dinner I will usually have 1 - 2 snacks of string cheese (7g protein, 50 calories) or cottage cheese (10g protein, 90 calories) or sigg yogurt (15g protein, 110 calories). Sometimes I just repeat a meal for a snack (chicken). Recently my favorite meal has been a little higher calorie, but tastes great: 3.5 oz 99% lean ground turkey w taco seasoning (25g p, 140c) .5 oz mexican cheese (4g, 50c)) .5 oz sour cream (.5g p, 30c) The key is all calories are protein calories. My plan doesn’t allow carbs until 6 or 12 months. This does seem to be helping me maintain muscle mass, which is the goal of this particular plan.
  15. Today is 4 weeks post RNY surgery for me. - Down 16.8 lbs. I've had a couple of times where my weight has stayed stable for more than 5 days in that 4 weeks (including now). Still watching to see if a pattern emerges and trying to take it in stride (not always successfully). - No issues with liquids at all (yay!). I have been getting between 80 and 100 most days. - Eating up to 4 oz at a time. I haven't tried for more except with greek yogurt (I eat the whole container of the Oikos triple zero which is just over 5 oz). - On soft foods for the last 2 weeks and so far I've tolerated everything I've tried (eggs, Tuna, Ricotta bake, lunchmeat, etc...). I had chicken for the first time today (canned and made into chicken salad) and that went down well. - I can get my protein in but only if I do a couple of shakes (or max a premier out by adding some collagen). - Walking daily up to 1 mile. I go back to work on Thursday (I was VERY fortunate to take a full month off). I also plan on starting back with my rowing machine in addition to the walking. All in all I am extremely happy with how I've healed so far. I'm looking forward to continuing the journey. I have a lot of work ahead of me to get to a healthy weight but I am hopeful.
  16. 1. Latinos or anyone strongly influenced by your culture: HOW did you cope with losing this part of you? You don't loose this part. It sits on the back burner for a bit. 2. What do you all do at family gatherings, parties, and on holidays while everyone is eating? Early on I would bring my own food to events. It is hard to see everyone eat while you are limited but the more you do it the easier it gets. I see people avoid the situations, but lets be realistic, you cannot hide this way for the rest of your days. learn to deal with it and move on. I like to sit with family and friends while we eat. I used to eat more , but now I talk more. 3. What do you eat? recipes are welcomed! I’ve been told to eat yogurt, chicken meatballs, canned Soup, and all kinds of food I'm not use to... Have you found a way to make your Latin food healthy? I stuck to my teams meal plan for the first 8 months and then started to make it my own. I focus on protein and veggies, many Latin foods are both. 4. Peruvians or Peruvian food lovers: Can you still eat things like ceviche, aji de gallina, lomo saltado, and anticucho, just minus the rice? Can your stomach handle the spice and seasonings? I am Guatemalan, with 2 best friends who are Peruvian. I can handle most spicy things again, (can no longer deal with straight habanaro anymore). By 10 months out I was fine eating spicy. As for the foods above all are easy except the anticucho and lomo saltado. Beef has been real hard for me unless its ground, but I know people who have no issue, and yes rice I can no longer handle, but to me that's a good thing. 👍

how often were you told to eat

Your taste buds will recover eventually. I wish they wouldn't! You are at an uncomfortable stage -- I remember it and felt the same way as you but looking back, I wish I had taken advantage of all that and just relaxed a bit. But that's hard. So, yes, start trying different foods. Some will work and some won't work right away. Eggs were always my go-to. Yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, etc. really helped me through it. I used to hate cottage cheese and now love it! But, I had to start out by adding jello to it. In fact, at the beginning I would add jello to plain yogurt as well. For the yogurt, I added the completed jello but for the cottage cheese, I added the jello powder into it along with a little bit of sugar free coolwhip. Mmmm. Still my favorite dessert. You can also add jello pudding powder into cottage cheese with a bit of coolwhip. When you can have it, I also add some crushed pineapple into it. Best of luck. You will get through this and do great!

    Just Got My Surgery Date!

Tracey, that's awesome! What an exciting time this is for you! I'm so glad you're able to move forward now in the direction you want to go in! Since you asked for suggestions, might I suggest making sure your food tastes good? This is important before surgery, but even more important afterwards. You'll be eating much less than you did before, so you can afford to add a pinch of garlic, some lemon zest, some herbs and spices, whatever you're hankering for! If all you eat is chicken broth and yogurt smoothies, that gets old kinda fast. Might I also suggest that you test drive some non-flavored Protein powders? You can literally put them in anything, and most post-op bariatric diets that I've seen rely on Protein Powder pretty heavily. Even people who can get their protein from other sources, and have gone on to a solid diet sometimes can benefit from using protein powder in sauces, Soups, beverages, etc. I'm so excited for you! You're going to do great!

    Lemon Greek Yogurt with Raspberries

I have been trying different things with my greek yogurt and came up with this! My husband even loves it, and every time I make myself a bowl, he is always commenting on how good it smells...maybe I will share one day....maybe... plain greek yogurt a few drops of lemon stevia liquid (I use Lemon Twist liquid stevia by Now foods) raspberries a few slivered almonds or granola a packet of French Vanilla powdered Stevia (I use Now brand) Mix the lemon stevia into the yogurt and blend well. Throw in your almonds. Wash your raspberries, place on top and then sprinkle with the French Vanilla Stevia (I do this because raspberries can be tart...sweetens everything up!) So delicious. I have also tried with strawberries. Good too! Any berry would probably work.

    New Lapbander

Hello Mandi Thank you for the quick response, I was banded by Dr.Cobourn a week ago today May 26th. I like the oatmeal idea, but I dont think so on the cottage cheese, not a big fan of cottage cheese. I have been having Optifast for breakfast, chicken broth for lunch followed by Jello with liquid yogurt(Yop), and the same for dinner pretty boring. Oh well I made it through 3 weeks of Optifast I will survive one more week of liquids. Maria

    Greek Yogurt Tuna Salad

I had recently posted a recipe for chicken salad, with greek yogurt and it is really delicious - I agree, it is a good substitute!

    Puree need more protein

I have Greek yogurt, mashed potatoes, chicken soup and I found this amazing black bean hummus so I mix it with roccotta and chicken. And protein shakes I feel like it's not enough.
  24. Not sure I made the right choice. I'm 3days out. Feel like I'm not doing it right. I sip on water, protein drinks. Little bites of pudding, Greek yogurt and cream of wheat. I have to do the until I go back on Dec 4th for a following up. Any one else struggling.
  25. Was this the menu that your doctor gave you? You will find that EVERYONE gets different orders from their docs and you should follow what he/she tells you to do, but IMHO... it seems that maybe you could cut out the extra items like the clam chowder, yogurt, rice and banana and stick to 2 oz of pure Protein shake each hour and sip on Water throughout the day. It looks like you are getting close to 50 grams of protein with your current menu and the vanilla protein in the crystal light is giving you 12 grams of protein with a 2 oz serving. Maybe you are getting too much protein in one sitting and it is making you feel too full. Don't get me wrong, you need protein to keep you from feeling hungry... but water is just as important during this phase. I would discuss with my doc.
