For those of you who have crossed over to post-op,... how much weight have folks lost during their pre-op diet? I know it’s not the point of the diet but just wondering what results folks had. I’ve lost 9 lbs, four days into my two week liver shrinking diet.

Dooter When I asked if I could pay to move up the list, I was told they don't do that here. So I would have had to go to the US or Mexico. Since this is all part of my decision making process, I opted to stay put, research (try other weight loss programs,etc...) and wait. I think the wait has done me good as I'm still not 100 percent sure what I'm going to do. This forum is great as it discusses many of the grey area issues that I've bee fretting over. Thanks for your interest.

Finally Eating Real (Soft) Foods Again
FluffyChix replied to Metamorphosing's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Awesome! The longer you can keep this mindset during the WLM, the better in my honest opinion. I didn't want to dink around with the scenic tour of weight loss. Been there, done that, never got to goal that way. -
Welcome back, Dave! That's an amazing loss. Stick around, we would love to hear about your experiences.

two weeks out and not losing
Kay P replied to spainter2009's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is very early in the process to worry about the numbers on the scale. I would recommend that if the scale dictates whether you are succeeding or not, don't weigh yourself. When I was on Weight Watchers, many different times, the scale ruled my life. If I stayed on program faithfully and the scale showed a gain, I quit! I had gastric bypass surgery in early December and did not step on a scale until yesterday at my two month appointment with my surgeon. Friends and family asked how I stayed off the scale all this time...easy, I said. If I stay focused on the proper diet, drink my fluids, excercise and take my Vitamins the numbers will be in my favor. My next appointment with the surgeon is in mid June, I will get on the scale again when I see him then. I'm not suggesting that you stay completely off of your scale but maybe limit it to once a week, the number game can be very discouraging. Congratulations on your surgery and weight loss to date, great job. -
If you have 4.5cc in your band, sounds like you probably have a 10cc band.. if so, it can take 7-8cc to get good restriction. Hang in there, 17lb loss is still a great achievement, you're not gaining! 17/4= roughly 5lb a month.. not bad at all.

Six months out today. Time flies!
Ms skinniness replied to N/A's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You said it all..... Look at how your life has changed for the better.....I love these changes.......Now that the easy part is over around the 6 month mark, weight loss does slow down and this gives you time to recognize the triggers to eating unhealthy foods and to establish better exercise routines.... Keep it up... -
Weight loss journey
Briswife15 replied to Felicia Leader's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, all I can say is that bariatric surgery was the right decision for me. I am no longer diabetic! No longer have high blood pressure! Can walk up stairs without dying, and feel so much better. My weight loss is not fast, but I have lost 90 pounds since my high weight, and 73 pounds since surgery. I still have a ways to go, but it's progress! Good luck to you!! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hi I have went through 6 months of requirements for my insurance company. And Im very nervous. I can’t help but think how fast will i loose weight or will it be slow. I pray i am making the right decision. Any advice. I have struggled with weight for over 20 years. And have tried lots of diets.

Vitamin Help!!!!
Sherrie Scharbrough replied to c3love5's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I have used the CELEBRATE capsules since right after my RNY. I had my WLS on July 2, 2013. As soon as I could I started using them instead of the chewables. They were way to sweet for me!! I also take HAIR SKIN AND NAILS 2 times a week since my B12 is high I use to take it everyday until just recently. I take SELEINUM every day. It helps wirth immunity and hair loss. I also takre VIT D 6,000 mg a day. My bloodwork has always been just great. What does your Team say about which vitamins to take? Always always keep up on your vitamins. Sometimes it may take awhile for stuff to show up. I have seen people having problems later on. I would say to start taking the HAIR SKIN AND NAILS before your surgery. Not everyone has hair loss but the majority do. I did . Also try to find a good shampoo to help you not lose your hair. But above everything make sure your follow your Surgeon's guidelines. Good Luck -
I’ve been reading your postings and am wondering how you are doing with your weight loss? I am at the beginning of the VSG process and am still in the research for a doctor phase. I saw that you traveled for your procedure. Since I am self-pay too, the few doctors in the Orlando area offer outpatient only. I would feel much more comfortable with a hospital stay included. Would you mind sharing your self-pay experience and benefits. Thank you.

Well you are darn right that is discouraging. But I imagine you had already lost a lot of weight with the band, no? Wondering what size boughie your doctor used and how much food you can get down. But I'm also thinking you are taking the steps to pump it up. You may need to go see a nutritionist and truly go on a diet/exercise plan to lose that last 20 lbs. I am half way through my weight loss and the lbs are much harder won now. I think for many of us we'll have to fight our bodies to get to the finish line. You are actually almost there! If you get there in a year the sleeve still would have done a good job. Hang in there!

I lost 20 pounds the first month after my surgery. BUT...as anyone here on the BP forum will tell you, everyone is different. There's no magic number, no 'typical' weight loss the first month.

April 6 Surgery - STALLED!!!
Luna Girl replied to cre8tivetara's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think our bodies have "set points" or different weights our body wants to be. I think I had/have five "set points". I stayed on my first one for two weeks, my second set point (stall) lasted a week and I just broke thru and lost 3 pounds in two days. Set points are hard to break thru but with our wls tool, it is much easier than before. Good Luck! https://www.prevention.com/weight-loss/a20455278/how-to-shift-your-set-point-weight/ -
walking is the normal first step for the initial 2-3 weeks or so, most docs don't want you doing any lifting or abs work for six weeks - mine says 12 weeks which arguably is still too soon. One of the things that learned from orthopedics and the PT that goes with it is that our connective tissues (which would include the fascia that holds our abdomin together under the muscles) don't have nearly the blood supply as our muscles, so they heal a lot slower. We can readily find our muscle strength returning and feeling good before those connective tissues are ready to take the load, so slow and easy is the watchword. Incisional hernias are not uncommon in our post op population (though they can provide partial payment for plastics!) I started doing some light resistance machine workouts after three weeks, keeping the weights light (about half of what I had been doing) and isolating the core. The main intent was to start regaining some range of motion and just reestablishing habits. As BigViffer indicated, you are going to lose some muscle mass both from caloric deficit and the simple matter that you won't be carrying that excess weight around 24/7. But good quality protein and continued strength training can minimize that loss. Heart rate is a funny thing. After 2-3 months, a good brisk walk, just short of a jog which my knees still don't like, could barely get my rate to break 100 whereas before it would easily be in the 130-140 functional range. To get my rate up to any reasonable level I could no longer do it along the shoreline paths and had to take it to the hill trails to get the elevation change. These days my resting rate still hangs around 50 so I'm still maintaining that extra cardio capacity to feed that extra weight that I no longer have; still gets questions from doctors, too! On sex, the humorous answer is that the hospital nurses agree that you should wait until you get home. My doc's answer is when you feel like it. As long as you are comfortable with positioning, an orgasm isn't going to bother anything done by the sleeve surgery (just getting there might if you are particularly adventuresome.)

Guys, I need some encouragement here. I had my sleeve done on April 6, and everything went as planned. However, after losing 21 pounds in fourteen days, I have been stalled for a week! I'm seriously crashing here, because it's like all my failures in weight loss are coming back! I am following the dietician's recommendations to the letter, walking 2 miles each day. . .HELP!!!

So at the seven month mark and I have lost a fair bit of weight and while I never considered myself super hairy before as I shrink my back hair and body hair in general seems to be condensing. So not only do I have some gnarly excess skin but I look like Sasquatch. I am hesitant to wax given the excess skin has anyone got any advice? Anyone try laser hair removal?

This site is great. Lots of people in all different stages of the sleeve, some with really great advise. I was obsessed with anything to do with my journey for the longest time. Good luck on your weight loss.

Penn state Milton s Hershey medical center? Ann Rogers?
CJBlanton replied to borderlinebeautiful89's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I wanted to include myself because I haven't seen many comments on Penn State Hershey Surgical Weight Loss, but I haven't had surgery yet. I have just been through the program and met with Dr. Ann Rogers once (I will be meeting with her again on Thursday). I can't really speak to the post-op component yet (I have surgery on 2/8/2017 unless something changes in the mean time), but I link her from our first consultation. At least to me, she comes off as genuine and down to earth. I was following her research and I like her output on that front. I went with her because I was interested in Duodenal Switch, but her reasoning for going with the sleeve instead seemed good. Hopefully, someone who has been through the surgery and post-op will comment. -

I don't know if you read my post last week. After my go around with Kaiser.I not sure what do. For days I have been myself to just forget the whole thing just try again on own. Now I am starting to get my fight back on.. I am not sure which way to go, fight the under 40 BMI with my HP,HC fatty liver, or gain some weight plus put weights in clothes. What do you think is the best route? NIH Requirements for Weight Loss Surgery The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services, is considered one of the world's foremost medical research centers. The NIH has set patient criteria for weight loss surgery which states that eligible patients should have a BMI of 40 or higher (morbidly obese) or a BMI of at least 35 with co-morbidities (obesity related health conditions) such as diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, high cholesterol, or hypertension (high blood pressure) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Eligible patients must also have attempted and failed at previous weight loss efforts and need to pass a psychiatric evaluation to be recommended for weight loss surgery. -
Am I Misunderstanding Foods Post-Surgery
AliveAgain replied to Shape_Shifter's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
My experience has been that the doctor greatly restricts your carbs in the beginning to do a bit of a "cleanse" for your liver, pancreas, and other organs -- it will allow for a greater amount of weight loss in a short amount of time. Also, Protein is best for you while you're recovering from surgery and resetting your relationship with food: To learn how to get fuller on denser, nutritious foods and not carbs. But in the long run, this would be hard for most to sustain, though not impossible. For instance, I had a very unhealthy relationship with carbs prior to surgery sometimes having them make up a majority of my meals. As Rootman explained so well about how carbs are burned and stored, this was bad for my weight. Now, I have a very healthy relationship with carbs. I still keep them to a minimum compared to my intake of protein, and I choose healthier carbs in fruits and vegetables and still limit the refined carbs. But I allow myself the occasional taste of Pasta noodles, so long as I have my protein and veggies as priority. And it's nowhere near the amount I used to eat. Now, it's a treat rather than a meal. We only go out for sushi every 2-3 weeks or so, but I'll allow myself 1-2 pieces of a roll, perhaps taking off some of the excess rice before. Again, I used to be able to put down 8+ pieces, plus tempura, etc. so this is much better for me. Yes, the months 0-4 you are really focused on low carbs. But the further out you are, the more it's about eating normally, in moderation and with balance in mind. Also, the more active I've become in physical training and other sports, the more you do need some of the healthy carbs in your diet. But this does not mean I "carbo load" prior to an event, I still monitor, measure and weigh to know that I'm keeping to a certain limit. -

HELP!!!! insurance question!!!
acs0618 replied to morgandonor's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there! I would suggest speaking to someone in your HR department at work. When they set up your benefits they pick and choose what they want covered. They should be able to tell you right away if weight loss surgery is covered. Hope this helps! ~Amanda -

songbird_kay replied to Was a humpty dumpty's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
do you have co-morbidities? If so, I would reeapeal. If not, kaiser has other really great weight loss programs you could look into. they have a medical weight management class (where to do meal supplements and so on) that is supposed to be really great. Just because they say you can't have surgery doesn't mean you can't lose weight.... it just may be in a different kind of program. Plus, if you try their other programs and your body does not respond, that gives them more reason to approve you for weight loss surgery as well.
