To Tell or Not To Tell
Airstream88 replied to Polly Pocket's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
From the very beginning I told everyone. I didn't feel like having to hide why I am eating so little now, not drinking at meals, not drinking alcohol, etc. Everyone I've told has been very supportive, at least to my face. The manager at the local Zoe's Kitchen still comes up to me and says how great I'm doing. But even if someone started giving me grief, I could care less. It's my life and my body, not theirs. You can't control how people behave, you can only control your reaction. -
Alcohol After Being Sleeved
Lilee84 replied to djprince714's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told no alcohol for a year, but I broke that at about 7 weeks and had a few glasses of wine with some girlfriends one night and I was perfectly fine. I had a pretty high tolerance for alcohol before though so those 4 glasses really did nothing for me except give me a headache the next morning. -
Anyone tried alcohol beverages yet
Chelenka replied to liltoy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have an occasional glass of wine with no ill affects. Sugar is my drug, not alcohol. -

Thanks so much for answering my question about alcohol Lynda...gives me a lot more insight. -
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol used to sweeten it. As far as carbs I have no idea, I count total carbs.

Bariatric surgery causes alcoholism?
bikrchk replied to Timmy2shirts's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It doesn't "cause" alcoholism! However, sometimes patients have been known to transfer their food addiction to some other forms of addiction including alcoholism, drugs, sex, shopping, gambling, etc. This is one of the biggies the Psych is looking for when they do the evaluation required for most of our surgeries. It's something we all need to be cognizant of for sure. -

Almost 17 months out here and while I will have a few drinks here and there, I've not become an alcoholic yet. -
Heard of LATE DUMPING SYNDROME?
efierke replied to brians34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One thing to keep in mind - a lot of the "sugar free" stuff out there isn't made with Splenda or Nutrasweet. It's made with sugar alcohol (manitol being a common one) - this still has calories but doesn't mess with a diabetic's blood sugar like regular sugar might. The side effect is that there's a *strong* laxative effect with too much of it. I'm 11 weeks out and have occassionally indulged in something sweet, but so far no dumping, thank goodness. -
Not a good idea! Would anyone walk up to a person in a restaurant who was drinking alcohol and ask if they were an alcoholic or if they knew about cirrhosis? I doubt it. Have I seen people I thought could benefit from the band? Sure. But I would never in a million years tell a strainger they need weight loss surgery.

Took a little vacation last week and first part of this week and was bad. Was out in nature camping and it ate camp food, hotdogs, Beans, cheeseburgers, ALCOHOL . Have not and will not get on the scale to see what injury/damage I've done. Had a wonderful time! I've got a fill scheduled for Monday so I'll find out. Last time at the Doc's I was 185. I hope I haven't gained too much but if I gained a pound or two I'll forgive myself and get back on track. I know that March was pretty much a wash with no weight loss and not sure why cuz I worked my butt off. Will post update Monday. Just wanted to say hi, I'm glad I'm back and need my pals here to help me get back on track.

Terrified I'm going to turn into my mother post-op
juliarh replied to brandynd's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
First of all, I'm so sorry that you're going through this Brandy. Big hugs. I, too, come from a family of many alcoholics. I think that, frankly, you're wise to be a little concerned about yourself -- I'm always watching myself too. The reason being is that a new study came out showing that people with a family history of alcoholism had a tendency to be obese. It's not that surprising if you think about it -- alcohol is made from carbohydrates (grain, rice, sugar, etc.) and we get obese from carbohydrates. Two sides of the same coin. Now, I'm not saying that ALL people who are obese or suffered from obesity have to be concerned about addiction. But I do think that people who have had a family history of alcoholism do need to be aware of the potential of cross-addiction (going from food to something else). That said, I think because you're aware and concerned, you're less likely to fall into the cross-addiction trap -- for example, I just don't drink anymore. I rarely drank before I had the sleeve and now, from what I've read, it's just not worth it. (Get tipsy really fast and then the tipsy feeling subsides really quickly. ugh.) So that's my choice. And nowadays it's easier to just not drink. Again, I am sooo sorry this has happened to you and to your mom. It's not easy to see someone you love so much go through this. But realize it's not about you and you cannot fix it. I really really recommend that, if you haven't already, get involved in Al-Anon or Adult children of alcoholics or something that may appeal to you -- And lastly and I think most importantly, YOU ARE NOT YOUR MOTHER. I hope you know this. Every person who grows up in an alcoholic family fears the worst about themselves (and when they get married, their spouse, their children, etc.). I've gone through it for years. And if you need someone to vent to, I'm here, there are so many people here on the board. We're happy to be shoulders, ears, whatever you need. Take care and big hugs -- Julie -
I am so, so, so disappointed. I started this process last December. I had to go through the Psych Eval, the three - nearly four months, of seeing the dietician, support meetings, etc. Finally the letter came back from the insurance company that my surgery for RNY has been denied. I am 4' "11' and 185 pounds or so. My BMI over 35 and I have to have at least two co-morbidities. You name it, I have it. My body hates to be fat. I have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, diabetic neuropathy in my feet, fatty liver disease, repeated issues with UTI's because of my blood sugar, I am diabetic and I know my endocrinologist is going to make me go on insulin this week - it totally sucks. They denied me because my two years of weight history shows my BMI as under 35. I was on two different prescription weight loss pills that my Endocrinologist prescribed - of course my weight was down. However, I did not like how either of those pills made me feel. One made me feel too jittery, heart racing and unable to concentrate while the other one worked for awhile - it stopped working and made me way too lethargic. My GI doctor was the one who told me over 2.5 years ago, when my BMI wasn't quite 35, that if I did not take the weight off that in ten years I would be looking at cirrhosis of the liver, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. That is when my endo put me on the weight loss pills. AS usual, I gain it back. So while I am 2.5 years into my fatty liver and I am closer to the 10 year mark and my insurance company denies me. Anyway, any tips on appealing Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield?

Tagaroo your story sounds just like mine. In 2012 I worked so hard, lost 45lbs and was leading a very healthy life. Then I started a new job in 2013 and here I am 2 years later at my heaviest yet at 250lbs. I gained 65 lbs since I began the new job. My bmi was a 39 when I started my 6 months of visits and now I'm cleared by insurance and my surgery is exactly one month from today. My pre-op diet doesn't start for 2 more weeks but I have already lost about 7 lbs so I'm daily preparing myself for surgery. I gradually cut out coffee, alcohol and most carbs to just prevent myself from going into shock! Best of luck on your surgery and hoping for a quick recovery!

Mostly splenda/sucralose for the best all around. Works when heated and even for cooking which many don't. It is taste neutral. Stevia has it's own flavor to it so you either like that or you don't. I like it in some things, but can't put it in my coffee ugh. I really like Swerve because it has a granulated version that cooks like sugar--so if you want to carmelize something you can--nuts, fruit, etc. It's sugar alcohol (Erythritol) with some oligosaccharides.

Honestly, what is everyone eating 1-3 yrs post op
Cape Crooner replied to nprcowboy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 months and only went into maintenance a month a go. As long as I'm under goal, I do a combination of "yellow days" and "green days". On a yellow day, I eat what I ate when I first got cleared for solid foods - about 1200 calories/day. On green days, I "pretty much eat anything" and have some sugar free alcohol (vodka, whiskey, red wine). Still, thanks to my sleeve, I doubt it's more than 2,000 calories. So far so good. In the event I go more than a pound or two over my goal weight, I'll go back on "red days" and log everything and target 1,000 calories. So far, so good... -
My vote is for Splenda/Sucralose...all the way around. It's not sugar, but it tastes amazingly close to me. No diarrhea, and it won't kill my dog. Would stand to reason that different people experience the taste of different sweeteners different ways, though. Stevia tastes horrifically bitter to me. I get along pretty well with aspertame, but like sucralose better. Saccharin tastes as bad to me as Stevia does. Bleh. That said, I think all of these are safe used in moderation. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/artificial-sweeteners/art-20046936 Will offer one word of caution...if you use sugar alcohols like xylitol KEEP IT AWAY FROM YOUR PETS...it can kill dogs and cats. http://www.pethealthnetwork.com/dog-health/dog-toxins-poisons/xylitol-poisoning-dogs-a-deadly-sugar-substitue

Wine at 1 month out?
FishingNurse replied to emmas mom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon says no to alcohol because you might not make your weight loss goals. He is good friends with the doctor I work for so he is straight up with me. I had a half a beer at my dads 60th Suprise Bday Party on Saturday. I felt fine. I will wait to drink my 2nd half a beer until New Years :-) -
I have the most amazing friend. She was so excited and open and told everyone about her decision to get her sleeve. It was because of her courage and strength that I have decided to embark on my own journey. I will be meeting with the surgeon in a few weeks and I am so excited, ready to embark on the road to a healthier me. I even found out my insurance does cover it!!! That said the one thing that I have struggled with is deciding if I was going to tell everyone or not. My husband is very supportive and so is my awesome friend, but after a lot of thought I have decided I am not telling anyone, with the exception of some friends and anyone I meet or know that is struggling with obesity themselves. My MIL is a nurse and she will not be supportive and I know she will say I need to do it on my own as she did 30 years ago. When I mentioned my friend having surgery all she said was "well...you have to be careful so many of them become alcoholics, or shopping addicts, I see them all the time at work" . Mind you I wasn't saying I was thinking about it or anything. She also talks about everything and everyone, not in a harmful way at all, she is not mean spirited, but is always talking about various peoples health and medical issues ect. After discussing this with my husband I have decided to not tell my in laws or anyone in his family. This is a very personal choice and I feel I want to keep it private. I wish I too could scream it from the mountain tops like my friend, but I fear that any form of negativity will keep me from being successful. Am I a coward??? :confused5:

Psych N Nutritionist Appt...
kcf101008 replied to Coalminerswife23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have a nutrition test, just a consult. The psych consult was ok. They basically make sure you do.t suffer from depression, you are doing this for the right reasons. They asked me if I ever used drugs or alcohol? If there were alcoholics in my family? Did I have a happy childhood? Then the computerized test was a hoot! Do I hear voices? If so do I do what they say? Do I believe in God? Do I base my routing on what God tells me? They ask you the same question a million different ways. Don't go in nervous, its really easy! -
It's nice that your doctor is amenable to wine! A lot of the info I've read has said no alcohol for a full year after the procedure, but if your doctor is okay with it, I'm glad for you!

I AM NOT LOSING - after 3 fills
supergran replied to Magilla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi Helene, My name is Marie, I am due to get my band in 13 days. reading your post frightens me! I did not realise you could have the band and not lose weight. I was told I would still have to watch what I eat, and be very careful about alcohol, dessert, fat. is it possible you are eating something which you think is low calorie, but is not? Good luck. Marie. -
Thanks but OMG My arms are not toned! I was actually commenting the other day how I REALLY NEED to start doing weights! LOL I did just fine and I was even drinking Beer! Even managed to lose a lb this week after all that! hehe Any BTW the girl with me had RNY 4 years ago and is still looking FAB!!! Her alcohol intake was WAY LESS then mine and she was WAY more drunk! LOL

Eating around the sleeve?
OKCPirate replied to highfunctioningfatman's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
eating around the sleeve seems to refer to high calorie foods which don't give the bang for the buck you need. You can probably cram in mashed potatoes all day, but you are not going to lose weight. @@Dub figured out that nuts can be a problem (good food, too many calories). Alcohol and nuts seem to be the worse. All that said, I use jerky's as "rescue food" which I think of is things I keep in my travel bag when I am not sure I can get enough Protein. It can be addictive, and I have to watch it, but I do dig it. It makes a stupid layover a good event, becaue I get to break out the gourmet jerky . -
I eat nuts and popcorn sometimes. They are not slider foods for me as they fill me up pretty quick. I have to make sure I chew them well or they will cause discomfort. I drink a glass of wine several times per week, but didn't have any alcohol for the first 6 months.
