December 2010 Bandsters out there?
Dave_NW replied to GardenGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good idea to test as you, er, "go." If you find you don't care for the shakes, remember that Costco will take back the open box and give you a full refund. So you won't be stuck with them if you don't like them. (My own TMI) As for the fiber thing, Costco also sells Fiber Gummies. They taste (kind of) like Gummy Bears. I eat a few a day, and it keeps me sort of regular. My diet is higher Protein, lower glycemic carbs, and not a lot of volume, so bathroom visits for that reason are only a few times a week. The Fiber Gummies help the movement of such things when the need is there, if you catch my drift. Dave, who is chuckling over the personal things this forum gets me to admit... -
December 2010 Bandsters out there?
Jess55 replied to GardenGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Dave. I had looked it up online and found out about costco. I had been planning to go there to get my dogs eye meds anyways so I went today. I probably will try one tonight because I am very low on calories today. The thing about the carbs is like 29g of them comes from my fiber one bar that I have daily. (TMI warning) I have had constipation issues for many years and I've found they help a little, so I don't want to give that up, but I will cut out the other things. We'll see how this test goes. I may drink half the shake before my workout and 1/2 after. -

UGGGH!! THe gas pains for me were the worst too!! I had gas so bad under my ribs, I could not take a deep breath. AND, I am sorry to tell you but nothing helps but time. I think it was like day 4 when mine broke loose. I started tootin' and tootin' and then I got the squirts. I was so happy to have them. But, be careful tootin, cuz you might just poop your pants. I did....3 times!! LOL, TMI!! Hope you feel better soon, cuz that gas is NO JOKE!! Kelly -
Hi everyone. I hope someone can help me. I was banded on 6/20/2011, and for the past month I have alot of nausea. Like almost every day I wake up nauseous and luckily I have nausea meds from my doc. It's just weird that it is every day. Does anyone else have this problem? Also, for the ladies, does the surgery tend to make your TOM irregular. Now before surgery I was never completely regular, but usually went a two months with out it.I have had it twice, but they were only about a week and a half apart and have lasted a little longer than normal (however have been lighter). I'm sorry if it's TMI, but I don't have anyone else to ask. Please help!! Thank you in advanced for your responses!

20 Mi Hiking & NO LOSS!
losingitin2012 replied to losingitin2012's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Do you recommend additional carbs or protein for the extra calories? I've been shooting for 90 gms protein and so most food is protein in the form of meat, shake, or Greek yogurt. I track every bite through a sparkpeople app on my phone. I track all outdoor exercise via GPS on the endomondo app. I should mention that I'm always constipated now (TMI?), so it's possible that some carbs in the form of fiber might help. Thanks again for the support! PAT -
Like so many "sleevers" I'm very grateful for my surgery. After struggling with my Lap-Band for years, I was so happy to have another surgical option to help me keep the weight off and continue living a healthy lifestyle. I'm now 6-weeks post-op and, though I certainly don't regret my surgery, I'm struggling with the changes that my body is going through. Forgive me for being blunt, but I don't know what to do about all of the diarrhea that I've been having! After two days of not having diarrhea, I ended up in the hospital with a partial blockage in my colon. I feel like I can't win either way! I can't put my finger on what's causing the issues with my bowels; I've cut out artificial sweeteners, added fiber, subtracted fiber, and various other combinations -- the only thing that works is returning to clear liquids. Of course, this is not a long-term solution. Honestly, the diarrhea wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't accompanied by major bloating and hideously loud bowel sounds! It sounds like there's a bathtub in my stomach that's trying to empty through a straw. I'm doing everything that my surgeon has instructed: taking my antacids, staying hydrated, being mindful of the types of sugars used in my supplements. It's just so hard to stay hydrated when the fluids that you're putting into your body come out faster than you can consume them! At this point I'm just feeling very discouraged and alienated by these symptoms. When I had my surgery, I was prepared to have to deal with people asking me why I'm not eating much or scrutinizing what I do (or don't eat) what I wasn't prepared for was the constant worry of embarrassing bowel sounds and the risk of having an accident in public! I don't want this post to discourage anyone who is considering having the "sleeve" or any other type of WLS procedure. Frankly, I just needed to vent and get some of these feelings out. If anyone has any recommendations or has had a similar experience, I would be very thankful to hear about it. More importantly, does this get better?

I'm on day 5 and still having issues with diarrhea. However, I'm sure once I'm eating "real" food things will improve. For those of you veterans, once things were working normally how frequently did you have a BM? I have ulcerative colitis so I tend to be VERY aware of what my gastrointestinal tract is doing.

Yesterday I did so well. minus the gas, I was a on a great road to recovery with very minimal pain. I decided to go for a walk around the corner ( which is something that I never do) and felt so good that I walked all the way to "Subway" with my husband while he got something to eat. I was not enticed by the environment or the smell. I had a small cup of water just because I am so supposed to be sipping something at all times. Last night the gas pains were a bit much, so I took the pain meds so that i can go to sleep in comfort. I slept well. This morning I woke up and finally the gas started moving from the rear. I felt like I made progress. I had to be graphic, but I even made a small loose BM that was pushed out by the gas. I am not giving you TMI, but this is something I was concerned about. The gas however, is still resting in my chest area and its uncomfortable. I know this will pass by in time so I don't allow that to consume me. So I have not eaten anything since last Wednesday and I am okay with that. I cant not say whether I am hungry or full at this point. I am just okay and have no desire to eat, if that makes sense to anyone. I had a cup of hot tea with some splenda to try to move this gas, but it didn't work. Aside from that I am slowly sipping on some water. I may try some Jello tonight, but at this point I honestly don't have the desire for food and I don't want to eat just because the food is there. My next step is the treadmill. It is raining outside so I cant go out there for a walk. I have to keep focus on this journey and take it one step at a time. There is no turning back now.

what vitamins are you taking post op?
Diane replied to emmas mom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Emmas mom ! I had my sleeve surgery on Feb. 14th,2011. For thinning hair I take Biotin and let me add I think it has helped tremendously. But I do notice when I comb my hair I do lose more strands of hair than I did before my pre-op and my post-op phases. Also this is something that you need to take for awhile before you notice any difference because it has to get into your system so to speak. I have read somewhere on this forum that your bodys hair growth responds to what your system has gone through in say the previous four months. So what you take for hair growth it may take your body four months to respond to. Also I am an older sleever 57 years old and it was brought up by one of the members of the support group that biotin helps all hair growth it cannot just target head hair growth. So if you have a issue with facial hair remember it could help that hair grow more also. I haven't had a problem with facial hair so I am pretty lucky so far I haven't noticed any growing, but I have noticed that my leg hairs are more pronounced since taking biotin. I started taking biotin in my pre-surgery days. Here is a list of what vitamins I take. Biotin Super Strength 7500 mcg 600mg Calcium +D - 1 tab 2xday B-1 500 mg D3 1000 IU - 1 tab 2xday Fish Oil 1200 mg w/360 mg OMEGA-3 - 2 daily sublingual High Potency B-12 2500 mcg Senior Multi-Vitamin - 1 tab 2xday I have an issue with constipation since pre-op dieting so I started taking a 100 mg stool softener tablet to help and if I didn't go after a day or so upped it to 2 and if I still didn't go I upped it to 3 tabs a day. I have found that the 3 tabs a day of the stool softener works the best for my system and I usually go every 3rd day and I don't need to strain myself to go either. - I know - TMI - right? But just thought you would like to be prepared is all. Hope this information helps you and good luck with your surgery! -
I haven't been able to go to the bathroom with a suppusoitory the last four times. I bought fiber pill but I am afraid to take it because it might swell up in my stomach. Please someone help any advice would be appreciated thanks in advance.

Hi all, I have been giving little updates on my progress since surgery. It seems to help me mentally to just jot down whats been happening. Maybe it will help others too. Yesterday I overdid it a little by taking my 13 year old shopping for school supplies and running a few errands. I had my husbands truck since he took my car to work. Its a tall quad cab dodge and our driveway is on an incline. It was hard to get in it but once there driving was fine. We only stayed out a few hours but I was pooped by the time we got back. I was really sore last night and it was hard to sleep soundly. I woke with a little nausea... my first nausea! I did not throw up but my body was screaming for something warm. I made decaf coffee and sipped that. I noticed gurgling and gas moving so when I tried to pass the gas a lot more came with! TMI I know... so I had a touch of diahrea sp? but now I feel better. So I am calling that my first BM after surgery. It was not bad, no cramping or anything. I have had a bout a half cup of coffee in the last hour and i feel some better now. Still sore from yesterday especially on the left side. Not horrible though. My bandages are itching now. I gained 14 pounds in water weight at the hospital. My right hand where the iv was is still puffy. I had lost 9 pounds with my postop diet and to see that I gained that back plus 5 more was disheartening. I have lost most of that back now. As of yesterday I was within 3 pounds of my preop diet weight. SW 234, preop 225, home from hosp. 239, yesterday 228. I have not weighed this morning. I will keep you all posted on how Im doing. Thanks for listening. Tammi

Totally TMI -Post-Op Constipation
SunnyinSD posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there, I'm about 5 days out from surgery and I haven't pooped since the day before surgery. Now I know that I haven't really eaten anything (I'm still on clear/creamy liquids and no protein shakes yet) since before surgery... but I'm getting worried about being constipated. I've been taking the Lortab liquid and I was warned that it causes constipation, so I guess I'm wondering if either I am constipated because of the Lortab or if I'm totally overreacting and I shouldn't expect to poop at all until I go onto the protein shakes (at the very earliest). What do you think? -
Day 2 after surgery
HDubSleevery replied to Forensikchic's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey lady! I am so glad you are up and at 'em! I'm on a 3 day countdown to sleevery. It's so close but so far. Oh and about your TMI...any time I get antibiotics, I get all "bakery". I completely forgot, but I will have to tell my medical team about it so I can have something. Keep the posts coming. I have two weeks left of my classes online so as long as I am able, I will be online next week! -
Warning for TMI: has anyone else's sex drive gone through the roof? I'm seriously distracted by this! I'm completely consumed by this spike in my libido. My poor DH doesn't know what to do! I had a very healthy, borderline nympho sex drive when I was thin before. Do you think this is here to stay? Also, my acne has cleared, my monthly cycle was not as painful and long and this is all icing on the cake that has me wanting sex for the first time in a long time. Oh, a weird side effect is my sudden desire to have a baby.

July 2011 Bandsters!

This is great exercise, though. Just curious if any of you is having this issue? I remember having the same problem a few years ago when I got really skinny. It didn't go away until I got pregnant and stayed fat. Meanwhile, I feel hormonal changes in regards to my TOM, less acne (yea!) and an out of the blue desire to have a baby. This is insane, but the ride is fun. -
It just erased everything I wrote... Here we go again. Stupid Iv getting in the way. I had heartburn yesterday, all day. The staff thought I was getting in too much liquid, if you can even do that. I cut way back on it but it didnt help much. It was not unbearable just came in little waves but passed quickly too. It was tolerable. I got a shower last night and all my bandages off. That felt good. I get my staples out today and they will put some glue on to hold it. The dr. has not been in yet this morning. Last night I got off the morphine pump and took some liquid lortab. It wasnt that bad. I got it down along with nausea meds and toridal in my drip. I slept like a rock! I didnt even get up to Pee! TMI THIS PART----I noticed some itching in the lower regions so I ask if I could have diflucan for a possible yeast infection. they cut it into three littlel peices and I was able to take it, no problem. I breathe with my spirometer but it cranks up the heartburn. I need clear lungs though so I use it as much as i can remember to. I hope all you guys are having a good experience too. I am plannning on listening to my body today instead of the nurse. If I need to sip, I am going to sip! It doesnt really help the heartburn that much anyway. I was not oversipping after all so today... I am planing to sip! I feel pretty dang good for just having this surgery. No nausea or vomiting. A little heartburn and thats about it. Good luck to all of you who are just starting this journey. I hope you have a good experience too! I am going home today! I will post again to tell how its going there. I am open for questions, should anyone want to ask me. Thanks Tammi

I'm here! I'm 9 days post op! I feel really good. I have so much energy now...I am amazed. I don't want to take naps anymore. My tummy is still a little sore and man oh man is it itchy!!!! I've been eating about 4 times a day. I haven't seemed to have any problems with any of the soft foods I have been eating. I even had a little cornbread mixed in crumbled and wet and mushy with my blended beef stew and still no problems. I've been very careful so far to stop eating when I feel full. Man...is it weird that 1 or 2 onces of food can make you full. I've been drinking a lot of tea. Watermelon slushies from Sonic helped me make it through the first week post op. If it hadn't been for those I don't know what I would have done. I'd really like to hear what everyone else is eating. So far...I'm eating cottage cheese...chewed really well Blenderized beef stew Potato Soup and chicken tortilla soup from Walmart Deli..very thin...and chunks very mushy Junk food is really easy to go down...I've had a couple packets of fun size M&M's An egg over easy with shredded cheese melted on top My husbands refried Beans from his taco bueno meal. Whenever I get wooshie headed I try to eat more Protein...like cottage cheese....sometimes I resort to a protein bullet....BLECK!!!! I lost about 15 lbs and now...I think since starting "real" food....I have stalled out and gone back up a few pounds. Which I think is mostly from (TMI alert) not eating enough to actually poop on a regular basis. Think the weight just builds up in there. LOL I'm frustrated by the scale not moving....but trying to realize....I'm hardly eating and it will eventually have to start going again. I did measure myself the other night. So, I'll have more to go on. You guys need to give me more details on how things are going for you. I'm dying to vacuum! weird I know...but gotta wait at least til friday. I've been walking....going on strolls at night with hubby. Can't wait to hear from you all! Carmen

Essentially the best means to relieve constipation is to get more fiber in your diet through whatever means you can. Food, your protein drinks fortified with fiber, fiber supplements and yes things like benefiber and etc added to your food. However if your bowel movements are normal but you just have a hard time with them, like its very hard to push them out (yes I known TMI) the a stool softener may be appropriate. Also make sure you get plenty of water in your system if that is the case.

Ok, so I'm not at goal yet but I began having this problem when I began working out 18 mths ago! I get boils! I've tried to research them and see if it's something I'm maybe just genetically prone to, if it's because I have the excess skin, or if I'm doing something wrong. They are painful, embarassing and hard to get rid of. I get rid of 1 and another one comes up. I've been told by a dermatologist that I'm prone to in-grown hairs...but I can't conclude if boils are a result of that or not, I don't think they are. (And no I haven't seen a dermatologist for the boils because I haven't had insurance, I was told that about my skin a few years ago, I will have insurance in the next 30-45 days so I WILL see a dermatologist then.) So, I wear spanx a lot, almost everyday. This seems to make it worse, but sometimes it doesn't. I get them mostly in my groin area! Soooo embarassing! Either at the top, on the side, in my bikini line, on my inner thigh, just all around that general area. And I KNOW I need a tummy tuck, but I'm waiting to finish losing weight--having another child--lose weight again...before scheduling a tummy tuck. I hope this problem would be resolved by doing that, because I'm considering an inner thigh lift too. But in the meantime, I don't know if I need to stop wearing spanx do something different, or what? I always shower right after working out, take good care of my skin (washing, exfoliating, hydrating daily) I don't wear jeans that are too tight or any of that jazz, I just can't seem to keep them at bay. However, when I'm getting a brazilian wax regularly, they seem to not show up AS OFTEN...but then, when I have 1 I don't want to get a wax because it makes them more noticeable (to my boyfriend) Ugh! Help! Thanks so much for any input you may have!!!

I just sent an email to my liaison at alighterme with questions about this topic. I'm having my surgery done in Mexico with Dr. Kelly on 08/22. On the original paperwork I guessed on my weight as 220 because I had packed my scale in storage out of frustration. As we made plans and set my surgery date, I got my scale out and was happy to see I was actually 210. I let the liaison know to change my weight and BMI on my paperwork. But the 210 was with clothes on and my first day of my cycle (sorry if TMI) so when I got on the scale today w/out clothes and the water retention down, I'm now 204.4. This puts my BMI to 32.5. I start my pre-op diet tomorrow. I'm thrilled that I have less weight to lose but I'm worried that with two weeks of the protein shake diet I may lose another 10 lbs. or more and bring my BMI to 30 or 31 (or even 29?). I usually do really well on diets the first couple weeks and lose a lot of weight. Will the doctor turn me away if I lose too much on the pre-op diet? I don't want to become too "thin" to qualify! Seems like such a silly thing to have to ask...

If we puke up our food...
FeistyRedDragon replied to wendy1974's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My advice would be ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! lol. I have had some incidents lately of just this thing... and if it happens it is always due to eating too fast. About 2 weeks ago (Might be TMI) I ate something too fast (I knew I was but I only had about 5 minutes at the time to eat SOMETHING) and ended up making myself so sick I started coughing up blood. I was understandably alarmed and went to the DR, where he told me "You probably just traumatized your esophagus, not your stomach". It was probably the most violent episode of food coming up I've ever had. I couldn't breathe while it was happening, and it was really scary. So I definitely learned my lesson. Think of it this way, if you were sick with the flu or something and vomited, would you eat right after? I think taking in some liquids after is important... give that esophagus time to rest and your stomach too. And take my story as a cautionary tale... lol. -
hey ya'll got a question and it contains some tmi....sorry! days 1-4 it was most uncomfortable to drink, last night i had my 1st bm since being sleeved, it was such a relief! today i have been drinking on some crystal light lemonade, I guess the taste is better than water to me cause I notice I am taking in more and i have not been sipping. anyone know if this is ok or are you supposed to sip always?

TMI for some...but how do you smell?
Texasmom65 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry if this is too much for some, but I have to ask....has your "female" parts changed the way they smell? Since surgery its different for me. I don't know if its because of all the Protein and no veggies or fruits in my diet at the moment or what. If this has happened to you, does it change or get better? -
Help! I can't poo
SmokyMtnGal2011 replied to Marilynn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First - STOP LOOKING A THE SCALES - your body is adjusting to a major lifestyle change, if you have to weigh only do so once a week NOT EVERY DAY or you will end up crazy and regretful, which you don't need either of right now. BE PATIENCE, easier said than done, I know, your body will drop those pounds shortly just stay the course and follow Doctors instructions!!!!!!!... Second, water, water, fluids, water and MOM(milk of magnesia) per directions. You can always do an enema if you are feeling that uncomfortable. Please keep us posted on your progress, no such thing as TMI on this site. WE are all Sleeve Sisters or Brothers. Good Luck.
