  1. I’m not back at work yet but this is something that I’m afraid of too. Before surgery I would often skip meals because of jumping from one meeting to another. I’m hoping that meal planning and having plenty of ready to eat/drink options will help

    Protein Shakes making me nausea

Our taste buds often change temporarily after surgery & things we used to enjoy taste or even smell disgusting or upset our sensitive healing tummies. Try bone broths, consommés or cream soups (just strain them to ensure they are perfectly smooth). Blend a high protein yoghurt to make a yoghurt drink - add as much milk as you need to make it thin enough to drink. Protein waters are also useful. Often you can tolerate a different brand or flavour of shake.
  3. Before surgery I could drink the premiere protein shakes with no problems. Since surgery they make me sick. I'm in the process of ordering PROTI 15 drink mix since that's what hospital gave me & I could tolerate it. In the meantime is there anything else I could try that's similar?
  4. This biggest challenge in the post-op process hit me this week. Work was so busy with presentations, I didn't have time to follow my nutrition schedule. Barely ended each day with my protein shakes, only one meal instead of two, and no where near my water goal. A couple of times felt so overwhelmed, knowing that I was not taking care of my needs.
  5. My question is, is cooked carrots, cooked cabbage (st.Patrick’s days) unsweetened applesauce, mashed potatoes (no skinned- mashed well), pudding sugar free- all acceptable to try? Small bites of? I know no drinking 30 minutes after eating. Well down corn beef/ bread roll is out of the option right even tho it’s soft right? My dad is doing dinner at his house on Sunday to celebrate st. Pattys and I’m trying to see what I can or cannot eat. If I should bring a shake or bring just cream of wheat and if I can add butter to my cream of wheat.
  6. High protein, low carb calorie deficit with low impact excersices! I was just consistent with it
  7. Has anyone tried Inspire Protein (bariatriceating.com)? I’m looking at their protein powders and wondering if anyone has thoughts on the taste and texture if you’ve tried it? It’s pricey and I don’t see customer reviews. Plus, they don’t offer refunds or exchanges if you don’t like the product (nor so I see sample packets like they have on Unjury). The one selling point is the flavor selection (huge). Any feedback?

First Post - Surgery Scheduled April 12

Congrats!! I'm glad you ended up looking into it. The idea that this surgery isn't for men is such a weird stigma, EVERYONE deserves to be at a healthy weight & I'm glad you get that now! Not going to lie, the liquid diet is difficult. It was the toughest part of this journey but in the grand scheme of things it was a tiny drop in a pool of water. The results are so worth it & you will look back on the liquid stage as just a crazy time you went through. I reccomend Fairlife protein shakes for that stage. They are genuinely tasty & good flavor makes that time a bit easier.
  9. Hello, I am new to these forums. In March of 2022, while in my rheumatologist's office for treatment for my autoimmune disorder, I was sent to the emergency room with what turned out to be a heart attack. On the day of my heart attack I was 44-years old, 5'11" 351 pounds with a blood pressure of 214/103. A couple days later I had my first visit with a cardiologist, who told me he believes I am a great candidate for bariatric surgey. I looked at him like he was crazy, "thats for people on 'My600-lb Life'" I thought. I didn't need that, besides 'men don't get this kind of surgery." A few months later after some thinking, searching for information on the internet and watching my father, who was not as big as me, pass away at 67. I decided I should look into it, worst case scenario, I get some diet tips. So In October I scheduled my first consult. Five months later, last week I was given my surgery date of 04/12/2023. Due to my auto immune disorder, my Doctor and myself have settled on the Gastric Sleeve. Back in October I was given a pre-op goal to get down to 330 pounds before my surgery. As of today I am at 296. I am excited, nervous and scared all at the same time. On one side I have people telling me "you look so good, you lost 50 pounds, keep going you don't need the surgery. On the other side, I have been able to do it before, but never to the amount where my BMI was in a healthy range and I always gained it back. Their answer is always "don't gain it back." If it was only that easy, I think. What really has me worried is the 2-week pre surgery liquid diet I start on 3/29. While I have been doing good things, mixing in protein shakes, eating a lot of soup... I'm terrified of slipping during that two weeks. How has everyone else dealt with that?

    Pureed food

Is Reser’s seafood salad acceptable during the purée stage? I’m 2.5 weeks post op and my doc has me on purée. I’ve done homemade refried beans and can tolerate it some, scrambled eggs, broths, yogurts. I’m burnt on protein shakes and I’m trying to work on getting protein from food as much as I can even though it’s quite difficult at this stage. I’m wondering if the seafood salad would help me at all or if I should avoid it at all cost

    Food Scale...at work

No, I just weigh it before I pack it and/or bring portion controlled, single-serving items (I am very guilty of eating Lunchables and leaving the crackers behind in a pinch LOL). I actually pack both my breakfast AND lunch AND snacks when I go into the office, a 10 hr day that starts at 6:30 AM once a week. The way I figure it I need to take care of Future Me's needs so I don't feel tempted to go poking around in the vending machine. My lunch usually looks like this (I am 18m post op and am in maintenance, but my calories are low because I am a small person): Breakfast: Zero sugar Chobani, 1/4 oz of chopped walnuts or pecans, Super Coffee protein shake as a mid morning snack. (all in, about 200 calories and 25g of protein) Lunch: Veggies, some kind of dip (if you aren't making dips with greek yogurt what are you doing with your life?), usually a couple of "lunchmeat roll ups" that are each one slice of deli meat and half a slice of cheese, another 1/4 oz of nuts (usually pistachios this time), a couple pickle slices (usually somewhere around 250-ish calories and another 25g of protein) Snacks: Options include Babybel light and a couple triscuits, Campbell's Well Yes sippable soups, protein shakes, or half a protein bar (I usually end up with leftovers)(any of these would give another 10g or so of protein). I eat dinner at home with my husband on these days and it's usually something protein-heavy

    Food Scale...at work

no - I just prepped my food at home and packed however much I could eat of it into a container and just took that. I also always had a couple of things of Greek yogurt and a ready-to-drink protein shake or two in my office refrigerator.

    Daily chronicles

Hi OP, I also had a VSG on Monday. Lots of gas in my new tummy, so gurgling and hiccups are frequent. I found warm liquids worked best to reduce the crampy feeling - chicken soup broth, Pho broth, etc. I strained first and use medicine cups (1oz each) to track intake and remember my small sips. I started mixing in a scoop of protein powder yesterday. Between these, I drink Gatorade Zero at room temp for electrolytes and Vitamin waters from Costco. I’m not dealing with runny stool, it’s the other way around for me so I can’t help much in that department. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

    March 23 buddies yet?

You are a stud if you can pull this off, I couldn't have done it. If you are committed I wish you all the luck in the world. Take lots of water with a couple of protein drinks; hopefully, they will give you pain meds. This is probably a ridiculous idea but could you also let a flight attendant know you've just had surgery? Maybe they could keep an eye on you while you're sleeping. Please have someone pick you up at the airport and I'd also let your employer know there's a chance you may not be in Monday. I hope you do great!!!!

    Daily chronicles

I am allowed clear liquids but water was sticking down consistently well so I just went with that. Now I'm doing protein waters and diluted apple juice which helped energy etc. I was also told by the nurse today to reduce fluid 2to 4 hrs before bed so it reduced BMs so I can sleep. So I'll try that. Also an all over belly cool pack seems to be quite delightful.

Solid foods - did I eat too much?

Ask for some portion size &/or calorie goal guidance from your dietician. I was told 1/4 - 1/3 cup from purée slowly increasing to a cup at goal (6months) but no calorie goals. All plans are different but I wasn’t allowed any bread or similar products so wraps weren't allowed. Plus too filling in your small tummy. Remember eat your protein first then your vegetables and finally any allowed carbs if you are able.

    3 weeks post op

I pretty much eat the same exact things. I had miso soup today and a 3oz piece of grilled chicken plus protein shakes, yogurt and decaf tea. At 3 weeks post I feel like I can eat. I also have not lost anymore weight this week. Thinking I should try and stick to liquids only for another week.
  19. Firstly hi all, I'm new here. My name is Helena. Just a little backdrop - I'm 37 years old, from the UK. I'm 5'9 and weigh 270lbs/20 stone. I talked to my local doctor recently about getting weight loss surgery and then I few weeks later I suddenly get a letter through telling me that an appointment has been booked with a bariatric surgeon in a few months time! If I'm approved I will be getting the surgery done on the NHS which means I essentially don't have to pay for it. That sounds like a blessing. But of course now I'm freaking out, being the massive coward I am I have been binge watching vlogs and from everything I'm hearing - whilst the end result is great - I don't know if I want to or even if I CAN go through the operation. For many reasons. Firstly I have never been operated on. I've never had children so don't know what childbirth or a c section feels like. I've been pretty blessed, aside from a herniated disc I had a few years ago, I've managed to live a pretty pain free life. The second thing might sound a little bit selfish but in my 30s I grew to accept myself as a bigger person. Whilst I hate the size that I am I feel like I don't really care about getting down to my ideal bmi and that I would be perfectly happy being 220lbs or if I'm really lucky 200lbs (I told you, thats gonna sound selfish). I can live with a heavier me. Ideally I just want to lose some weight. But by some I don't mean 10lbs, enough so that I can lose a few dress sizes. Many years ago I lost just one dress size and felt amazing, so much more confident. But that was in my 20s and achieved from pretty much a starvation diet (about 700-800 calories a day, only lasted a few weeks and of course eventually put it all back on). I won't be able to do a starvation diet in my 30s, don't have the willpower now. So I want to keep the surgery option as my last, last, LAST option (without sounding ungrateful) but so far all the success stories I've heard of people who have lost roughly 50lbs-70lbs or more is that it was achieved through some sort of surgery. Do you honestly think its achievable to lose the weight naturally within a year (I need to lose it within a year) or do you think I should just prepare myself for the surgery?? Sorry if you think its a stupid question, I'm just kinda lonely with no one else to really turn to so I kinda need to get this off my chest. If you think it can be achieved naturally could you tell me what diet/weight loss plan I should opt for? Thank you for listening x

    3 weeks post op

I am 3 weeks out today too! I’m still on liquids for another week, that’s just my Dr. it’s hard seeing others at same place eating soft foods! Today though I’ve been “grazing” all day. Since I have no issue with liquids, nothing is really filling me up. I’ve had a protein shake, soup, sugar free pudding with almond milk, more soup, yogurt, and jello. Not really hungry, but totally not satisfied.

    Sleeve surgery March 13th 2023

How is everyone doing? How is the fluid intake going? I started protein drinks today and it’s hard, but I set a timer and that’s helping me space things out. Hope all of you are feeling good! 🌈❤️
  22. Hello everyone, I finally got to have my surgery this passed Monday. I had a vertical sleeve done. Pre op I went from 255.9 to 239.6 so very excited for that. Sadly that's not the reason I'm writing today. Sorry in advance this may get TMI. So for me it is day 4. I called my nurses because I had only been on water this whole time and just felt awful. They told me to just rest get some protein water and apple juice because even though I was following the liquid diet to the letter my body needs those to function. What I wasn't warned about was the bathroom issues. I literally take a sip and almost instantly to and hour later I'm upstairs with bad bathroom issues. My stomach feels like I have a kicking baby in my abdomin and the gurgle wow. Did anyone else experience this? How long did it last? It sucks. One more thing to worry about. My doctor said it will balance out once we get more food in me starting Tuesday. Help me survive the next few days. Please?

PURE PROTEIN ARE CHEAPER IN PRICE GET THEM AT FRY'S FOOD STORE AND TASTES GOOD MAKE SURE THEY ARE COLD
  24. I have an Etekcity bathroom scales that charts weight, BMI, etc. I weight every morning, I feel it gives me an immediate insight as to things I did or didn't do appropriately: such as, did I have too much salt, did I drink enough water, did I get enough protein, what was my calorie count, and after surgery bathroom visits change a lot. I have had stalls, and increases, of course, but I think just being mindful works for me. Best wishes to everyone!

    March 23 buddies yet?

The liquid diet i had while in the hospital wasn't bad. I know everyones bodies respond different. I slept. Other then when i got up to walk, shower & eat. I slept a lot. Im traveling home & eating is a struggle traveling. They packed me food to bring on my plane rides. They packed: water, jello, gatorades, apple juices & chicken broth to bring with me. I have not ate meat in over three years. The chicken broth was my best protein so I ate it. bothered me a little. but choose your battles. ill be home soon health is #1 priority.
