Out With the Old--In With the New!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Ok, so I technically sorta already made my 3month post in the 12 Weeks post-op post. Trouble is there are 4.33 weeks in a month from Jan.1 - Dec.31. LOL. And that can fork with a borderline OCD person's little parsimonious heart! *snort* *double ha* But technically, this is my 3 month surgiversary (Feb 20, 2018 to May 20, 2018) and I look back, shake my head and wonder where the time went?" It can't possibly have flown by so quickly, can it? I also feel like now, the weight loss post surgery, is finally adding up in a significant manner. ATHW 325lbs HW 287.4lbs SD 222.4lbs CW 183.0lbs -39.4lbs lost since surgery day (it averages to approximately 13lbs/month rate of loss going from surg day to the 20th of each month) -104.4lbs lost overall from highest weight (recent) -142lbs lost overall from my all time highest weight -12 inches lost in my waist measurement (48in waist at my HW and 36in waist today) Of course, I complicate matters because on here and in my stats, I actually track my monthly loss from the 1st of the month through the last day of each month. LOL. Good times! So the true surgiversary date is more of a minor celebration of data. Hahahaha! I feel great--except for this stupid antibiotic rash I've got going and the nausea that goes with it. Bactrim SUCKS wind! And I truly don't know that my UTI feels any better. I only have 3 pills left (hallelujah-praise Jesus, Mary and Joseph and all the saints!) and I'm still having bad bladder spasms and feelings of frequency. So I'm afraid he's gonna send me to a specialist. YUCK. Ok, well it's time for me to go get ready to walk the nature reserve with Mr. F! Then home to make green eggs and bacons! ha! A friend gave us some of her yard eggs from her Araucana chickens. They lay the most beautiful eggs! Here's what they look like--like true Easter Eggies! -
Getting scared
Harleymama11 replied to Harleymama11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had a lot of surgical complications with wounds not healing properly in the past. I don't think I will have much problem conforming to the diet. I just worry about complications. I have done a lot of research so I pretty much know the good and the bad. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app -
I had my surgery January 25. All had gone very well, down 60 lbs since then. Recently, I developed an incisional hernia and am now scheduled to have the corrected on June 26th. Last night, while having dinner, I began to have severe stomach pains. I stopped eating, figuring it was indigestion. A few hours later, when the pain was increasing, and not subsiding, I went to the ER. I was admitted and they did every test they could, saying nothing conclusively. This afternoon, my surgeon was was able to see all the data from my work ups, and an emergency surgery was scheduled and completed at 4pm this afternoon. Turns out, in addition to my incisional hernia, I developed an internal hernia, that has caused my intestines to twist. That is why no matter the pain meds I was being given every 2 hours, the pain never subsided. Surgery was quick, about 30 minutes and the surgeon correct my intestines. Feeling 100 percent better right now. Hopefully going home tomorrow. It’s my second scare since the surgery, made me question my decision to even have it at all last night when I was going through that pain. My first scare was internal bleeding following surgery which required transfusions. But now that my surgeon has corrected these issues, I’m feeling much better and am chalking this up to just another possible complication with WLS. Just decided to post this as I feel WLS has its ups and downs. But trust in your surgeon and his decisions. Communicate with him and all should be ok. My surgeon gives you his email and phone number for easy access. Definitely an undervalued asset to have that I overlooked when choosing surgeons. Glad I went with one that makes himself available when needed.

My insurance had no real requirements. The surgeon's office required all the same appointments as everyone else, but spread out the nutritionist appointments 1 every 3 months to give people time to adjust to low-carb eating and make sure the postop plan was well understood. Took 4 months total. It is good to take a little time to do the research so you are well prepared. The surgery is SO worth not having diabetes and all of the eventual complications associated with it: heart attack, stroke, amputation, kidney failure, neuropathy, loss of vision . . . . Even if your blood sugars are well controlled, you can still have some of the wonderful things on that list. It isn't just the weight loss. The sleeve and bypass both change your body metabolicly to improve diabetes. Keep coming here for support. There will always be someone to cheer you on and answer questions 😁

GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +
sarhgrif replied to Frustr8's topic in The Gals' Room
[emoji112] hello, started in July of last year with the process to rny. In the middle of the 6 month program I went on vacation and when I returned weighed in at my highest , 378! Day of surgery I weighed 363 and am so close to the 200’s. I remember my surgeon(who no longer performs surgery bc of all of its complications, he told me after my surgery) told me the closer to a BMI of 60 the less likely of long term success. At my highest my BMI was 61. I’ve only been in the 300 for the past 2 years or so and prior was mid 200s. My BMI is now exactly 50 and I love watching it go down. I will succeed and am bettering myself and my body everyday. Since surgery I’ve lost a little over 50 pounds and can tell a huge difference but do not get many comments from other. I know once I’m down another 20 it will be more obvious bc my clothes are now pretty big and loose. Hw-378 Sw- 363 (2/27/18) CW-310.6 -
3 mo. post op. Still doing good. I am down about 45lbs since surgery on 2/12/18. Still working on protein and getting enough water in and taking my vitamins on time. I set an alarm for it and it worked at first but I sometimes ignore it. No complications (knock on wood) and I feel fine. Cravings are still close to gone. Every now and then I will get a craving but it usually passes after drinking water or a liquid. I don't really care for sweets, including pop. I cannot believe i am saying that because I was a heavy snack food junkie. I am getting out and enjoying the weather as much as i can. Every step counts. I can tolerate pretty much any food that i have tried. I constantly looking for healthy recipes, as I am trying to stay away from fried and frozen foods. Drop some recipes if you know of any (that are good). I still get kinda frustrated after being full after 3 bites, i sit there and stare at the food like really? lol I plan on buying a bike and hitting the trail that i walk on in the morning. We shall see.

I had some of the same fears you have. I asked a bunch of WLS vets about vomiting. Every one of them told me that it is not vomiting like we know it now. It is more like regurgitation. You have plenty of time to make it to a discreet place IF you need to bring something back up. As far as the other issues, I would think that you would know if these things are or could happen before you went to a public place. It would not happen unless you had some sort of complication or were sick. Have you considered asking your Dr for something for anxiety? It may be very helpful to you until you can get through this. Good luck!

I’ve moved to a Paleo/Whole 30 diet which typically limits dairy, grains, legumes, and all processed food sources. I’m finding substitutes with more natural sources where I can, but I’ve also just accepted that the first few months, it’s more important to hit my protein and hydration goals however possible and gradually work back to the way I plan to eat the rest of my life once my stomach has healed, and I can tolerate a variety of foods again. I figure this process is going to be hard enough without adding more complications at the beginning when I’m barely able to eat anything. So, I’ll be doing Protein infused water and sf jello with added whey protein and Premier Protein shakes. I have found Paleo and Vegan protein powder which I will use in my jellos and shakes. Vegetarian broth won’t have the proteins bone broth offers so you’d have to add unflavored protein sources. However, I’ve been told you can’t add the protein when the broth is hot or it will break down the protein and become gloopy.

Dear Friends. I have followed almost every topic on these forums since I started this whole process back in September. I come to these forums daily because its nice to hear from people who completely understand you, but I offer my apologies for being selfish and never sharing back. I should have long ago. This has been such a personal and private thing for me I could hardly speak of it, but now I need help so I have a lot of making up to do to all of you who take the time to help others on their way. I will try to be a better supporter! So, I had my VSG in the end of February and I thought everything was going just fine until about a month ago food didn't seem to want to stay down anymore. I thought I was doing something wrong and I was embarrassed to say anything. Maybe i was trying to eat too much or not chew enough or something. My doctor had me do an upper GI and right in the middle of my little banana stomach is a tight stricture. I am waiting for a call from a specialist my doctor works with to set a date for an endoscopy where they plan to place a stint into my stomach and hold the stricture open I guess, or stretch it? He said I maybe sick from it for the six weeks they leave it in. Yesterday I was feeling very brave about it all, but I woke up this morning feeling very nervous. I went right to the internet, but I couldn't find anything about using a stint with a stricture. I was hoping maybe one of you have had this experience and could offer some TRUTHS about the road ahead for me. Don't sugar coat it, I do better if I know the facts. Thank you for sharing anything you can. Also, to those of you who might read this and are planning your surgery still. Please don't let this topic scare you off or create worry. I wouldn't change anything even if I had the foresight of knowing I would have complications. I have no regrets, I'm just a little scared of what I don't know and this is the best place to bring my questions.

You are among friends! I can tell you firsthand that you are going to be amazing and you are going to have incredible results. My best friend was sleeved year and a half ago and she lost 100 pounds. My husband was sleeved 5 weeks ago and has already lost 54 pounds. Besides the weight-loss my husband has had so many wonderful successes… He’s no longer in pain 24 hours a day seven days a week, we don’t have to park in a handicapped spot at church anymore, he can walk reasonable distances without being breathless, etc. Everyone, of course, has a different experience. While my husband had absolutely no complications whatsoever I was in the hospital for two days because I couldn’t keep down the teeniest sip of water without vomiting. Now that I’m home and resting I feel so much more human. I just had my very first “meal” of strained 98% fat free cream of broccoli soup. It was soooo good!! Cheers friend!

Officially two weeks post op today and had a scrambled egg with little bits of lean ham and it was delicious with just salt and pepper. I ate v e r y s l o w l y and chewed way more than I ever have before, as I was told to do. I was in heaven. I'm very surprised how well I'm doing 2 weeks out. I had sleeve and "complicated" hiatal hernia repair that itself took 1 1/2 hours in operating room. Only another 30 mins. for the sleeve. I'm mostly pain free, just a little once in a while. I did have heartburn earlier this week with a lot of intestinal gas that went away after a day. So far, I've only had one day that was emotionally difficult. Angry and crying. It was really about 1 1/2 hours but felt like a whole day. I'm 65 and retired and a lot of my socializing is also around food. I made the decision to tell all friends and family (some after the surgery) I'd had the surgery. It was no shock to anyone I needed to lose weight. LOL! Almost everyone is very happy I did something to help myself and my health. The only people who seemed less than thrilled were others who were overweight. I told them all I won't be able to join them for about another month or so while I continue to heal and eventually I can join them but just have an appetizer or take most of my meal home for leftovers. No matter what, I have to take care of myself first. I saw my surgeon yesterday and my incisions were glued with some fabric over them. The fabric has been slowly coming up off my skin. he told me yesterday it has to come off and to do it in the shower. It will come off easier when wet. This happens today. I was VERY scared from the time I was approved and the surgery and, so far, everything I was afraid of didn't happen. From reading so many posts on this site, it seems we all go through this. I can't say for sure that you will have no complications but it seems unlikely based on all the posts I've read. So if you haven't had surgery yet, take a deep breath, shop and plan ahead so you have what you need post surgery and try to put things in perspective. Complication rates for the sleeve really are very low.

Needing to Vent
PrayingForWeightLoss replied to Debbie1220's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the sleeve and large hernia repair in July last year. Had no complications and have lost lost 74lbs to date. I hope you get the help and support you need (and deserve ) to overcome your fears. They are real to you and should not be taken lightly. All the best on your journey to better health. -
I had bypass with a hiatal hernia repair. I had surgery in December. I’ve had no complications as of yet. Although there are no guarantees you will not be in the small percentage of people that have post operative complications, most people will have serious health complications due to obesity. It is a hard decision to make, but for me it was harder to stay morbidly obese.

Out With the Old--In With the New!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Ok. First don't hate me. My protein latte is like the most simple thing in the world. But sadly, you don't have Premier Protein do you? Do you have any RTD drinks that are zero sugars, low carb, protein drinks that you like? Cuz if so, then it's pretty simple dimple. Also, can you order SF Torani Or SF Da Vinci Syrups? Cuz if so, then you can make a crap ton of flavors. I drink them hot in the mornings and now that it's a scorcher, I'm having them in the afternoon or late evening as my snack to finish my protein needs out for the day. They are oddly satisfying and refreshing over just ice cubes, crushed ice is even better. Frappacino is divine--but I'm fairly lazy right now. Sorry not to razzle dazzle. LOL. But these are my "easy button" drinks. Oh and we just brew our favorite blend of decaf which is a blend of 3 different coffees. Can't tell you which ones, Mr. F. is the barista around here. I will pour any leftover coffee into a jar and save in the fridge for ice coffees. So convenient! Basic Latte: 6oz decaff 1.5oz Premier Protein 3/4-1oz SF Torani or DaVinci Syrup 8.5g Miralax (generic - optional) Basic Iced Coffee: 3-4oz Premier Protein 6-8oz decaff 1oz SF Torani or DaVinci Syrup 3-5g whole psyllium husks (NOW! brand) (optional--start VERY slowly if your doctor says you can have this) ice (I fill the glass up, then add the PP, the sweetener, and top off with coffee. If adding the psyllium, will stir that into the mix before the ice, then pour over the ice.) Great Combinations: Bananas & Cream with Coffee (SF Syrups: cinnamon vanilla, s'mores, vanilla, marshmallow) Chocolate with Coffee (SF Syrup: chocolate, white chocolate, bailey's, peppermint, cinnamon vanilla, s'mores, marshmallow) Vanilla with Coffee (SF Syrup: see any for the chocolate + pumpkin spice) I'm sure there are other combinations, but those are the syrups I have and that I've tried. The Bailey's and the white chocolate syrups are SO damn good! In the old fat days, we would mix those syrups together with vodka and cream to make white russians. So good. So deadly. LOL. ********************** Ok, so now about the losing. I think I would start adding calories. And the way I would do that is to start slowly adding a couple hundred cals in 100cal increments until I start seeing a cessation or slow down of loss. I "think" the body is supposed to establish its own level of equilibrium when you reach your new low set-point. That's theoretically supposed to be the "end" until the magic 2-3 year mark when you start gaining. I have no idea if this is reality--these are just from anecdotal stories I've heard and read. I think for you where you are, 750cals might be on the lower end. I'd want to maybe be up around 850-900 right now with only 7lbs left, but I personally would not want to stop losing yet. I do want to be about 15lbs below where I want to end up and want to stay there for a couple of years until the natural regain stuff starts. I want to end up around 140-145 on the high end of panic mode. After a year, the fat reapportions itself so that you fill out again and don't look drawn. I would do that by adding fat, as long as you are getting most of your food from protein and getting your 60-80g of protein per day (probably more on the 75-80g per day rather than the 60g per day end.) And if your carbs are low (<40-50g per day), then the best thing will be to add fat. But you don't have to do fat bombs! It's small switches! 1 tsp of olive oil is about 120cals! 2tbsp of peanut butter is about 200cals! 1/4 avocado is around 100cals. 1/2oz of almonds is about 90 cals. Using whole milk cheese rather than 2% will be 100cals/oz rather than 60-80cals. Fattier cuts of meat rather than super lean will make a diff quickly and should still be tolerable. So in no situation would I need to be adding a fat bomb or bulletproof coffee. All of these things will add calories and add to satiety without adding volume. Right now, I'm maxed on volume too and am happily at 650-800 per day depending on my protein choices and if I have any nuts or nut butters or avocado for any meal. Once I reach my goal, I also intend to start experimenting with things like fruits/root veg and winter squash in small quantities/beans/legumes/brown rice, quinoa, low carb tortillas, stuff like that. Cuz my plan for maintenance is to hopefully see what calorie level puts me in maintenance. The way I'm sure it's cals versus blood sugar and insulin is to get my calorie levels up by fat. Cuz fat is not supposed to raise blood sugar as much as other foods. Once I know where I am, then I can re-apportion macros. I will always want to meet my protein goals. Then it's a matter of balancing your carbs and fat cals out with the remaining cals for the day once you have your protein needs accounted for. You might want some higher carb days (which will mean you have to lower your fats). Or you may want to just keep it where you know you're comfy and aren't losing or gaining. For me, I will want to know how high carb I can eat before my bg meter starts rising out of the normal range-and without wt. gain-then I will use that to determine my carb threshold for maintenance and the fat will fall to the level it does to remain iso-caloric. You may choose to have a couple of "huge cheat days" where you eat freely what you want, then take it back down to a 800-1000cal level for the rest of the week. So many variations! And as long as it doesn't jack with bgs or insulin, you can determine the type of maintenance works best for you. Hope that helps? I am personally gonna see where my body takes me down to once I'm firmly at around 850 cals per day. If it takes me to 125, then I will begin to formulate an escape plan cuz I know all too soon it's not gonna be about losing, rather about stopping regain? But I'm just a schmoe on the internet! So don't trust what I say! Do your research!!! And of course, all of this is null and void if you become a serious exerciser! Cuz then your needs are different and I've NO idea how to address that with myself! That's def a Jess and Jenn and Big Viffer, Mike question! And I will read and learn. Cuz I'm pretty sure you need a crap ton more cals, and maybe even more carbs, etc! To me, their scenario feels way more complicated and challenging to keep them out of starvation mode! -
Hi! I am doing well, starting to feel like my old self. Just really tired, not sleepy, but just fatigued. Like yesterday I did some minor cleaning and I felt exhausted lol. I am think doctors prefer sleeve because of less complications? I am not sure. But yea, so far I am happy with my revision. I will know the real deal once I start eating food again
-
Good morning ladies and gents! It is hard to believe I am on my second day post op! I am thrilled to say that I am doing well. No complications have cropped up yet. In fact if the wounds on my belly didn't hurt a tad, I would swear I didn't even have the surgery! I have had no trouble getting fluids or protein down. In fact its 6:46am and I've already logged 20oz of fluid and 10g of protein today. In fact, I was a bit concerned, like many others, who could consume more than they thought. Yesterday, my first "meal" consisted of 1 cup of chicken broth that I was able to consume in its entirety of 45 minutes, and I truly felt it was my own obsessive pacing that allowed it to stretch for that long. I then followed that up with 8oz of water about 30 mins later over the course of an hour. I did notice more restriction when I had lunch and started sampling different protein shakes, greet yogurt and pudding. However I still felt like I was able to eat more than I should have been able to. I mean don't get me wrong, I am NOT complaining at all. Being able to consume that much has made it easier for me. I've had more energy to walk, and don't feel exhausted. I attribute to the reduced pain to this as well. The tummy gurgling though... its wicked funny. My stomach was always silent. Now it chatting all day! I hope my fellow May 14ers are having as easy of a time!

Why pick gastric bypass over gastric sleeve?
Shanna0628 replied to Cara R's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
This is what convinced me.... the risk associated with both surgery are equal, and the risk of complications after are equal.... BUT... if your sleeve leaks, it’s worse than a bypass leaking. Here’s why.... the sleeve leaves the esophagus and intestines attached... but your system is built for a certain sized stomach. When they make the stomach smaller, it creates a high-pressure environment. This is why food and bile pushes up. If you leak with this high pressure environment, the consequences are more severe. With the bypass, it is a low pressure system. Everything needs to be adjusted for slow system. (The speed in which you eat and drink also needs to slow down - or you get dumping). The risk of leaving after a sleeve was my deciding factor and my surgeon said it was best for me. Good of luck with everything! -
So I’m two weeks post-op and had no major complications, just had gas pain first week. This morning I woke up choking on bile and had to run and spit it up, my throat is on fire as well. I just realized that I must of accidentally rolled on to my stomach, but I’m not sure how long I was sleeping on it. Has this happened to anyone and what did you do?

Lol, no complications. From the mag citrate, I was definitely emptied out. Also, I felt comfortable going a little rogue. My ex is a Gastroenterology, and when he read my preop instructions he thought that was a bit overly cautious and told me not to expect to hear from him that day cause he knew I'd be hangry, lol. -

Any complications from the burger? Did they say they found traces of beef in there? Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app -
For safety, you need to make the surgeon aware of this since if your stomach is not completely empty at the time of surgery it could lead to some serious complications like peritonitis. You might want to check with them to see if you need to take some Mag Citrate or something to clean you out. If you are having bypass it could be even more serious.

I'm the same! I had my orientation at Kaiser a little over 2 weeks ago, where they told us to start on the pre-op diet. I had a BMI of 35 -- I'm 5'4" with a SW of 215. I've already lost 12 pounds, which drops me down to a BMI of 34. I have my first meeting with the surgeon tomorrow... I'm hoping to schedule surgery for July. If I keep up the weigh loss, I have to imagine I'll be at least at a 33 by then. Thankfully, I'm told that Kaiser goes by the orientation weight, so it shouldn't matter. If anything, I want my body to be as healthy as possible by the time I have surgery in order to reduce complications. But I'll also see what the surgeon says tomorrow when I meet him!

I also had my revision from lapband to sleeve and hernia repair on May 7th. Just got out of hospital yesterday, had dehydration and inflammation complications. Congrats! Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

Surgery Tomorrow, Feeling Anxious About Weird Things
Kay07 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Tomorrow’s the day! I feel like it snuck up on me. I’ve spent the past 2 weeks taking care of my husband that I hardly noticed the time passing. As I prepare for tomorrow, I can’t help but feel like I am not prepared. Even though I’ve probably purchased more things than necessary... I have 4 different soups prepared and frozen (I kid you not I’ve had my crockpots going for over 24 hours to make the bone broths and chicken stocks!) enough premier protein for the next several weeks, and several other brands/flavors in case the premier is a bust due to post-surgical changes. I’ve got Greek yogurt a-plenty, fairlife milk and almond milk. And I’ve spent all weekend in the kitchen cooking up meal after meal for the fam so I can have a full week to recover before the mom/wife duties resume... I’ve got a ton of mini-plates (I have a collection now. I tend to collect oddities. I have a huge collection of coffee mugs, and now my obsession is decorative mini plates. I have issues LOL). I’ve got the spoons, forks, a plethora of different vitamins because damn chewables are gross. I even purchased a pillow wedge, toilet seat raiser, squatty potty, the colace/miralax/MoM/other various pooping aides... Despite having what seems like an arsenal of items, I feel so underprepared. I guess my anxiety is rearing it’s head. I don’t feel nervous about the surgery itself, I feel nervous that I’m forgetting something important. Anyone else feel like they had nonsensical worries before their surgery? The normal worries, complications in surgery, possible injury, or even non succeeding with the tool don’t plague me at all. Instead I’m paranoid that I don’t have enough plates, or that my protein powder will run out (even though realistically I probably have enough to last me a good 3 months straight) or that I won’t be able to take those terrible vitamins. Slap some advice or tough love on me! I need some help getting out of my own head!
