    Adjusted My Goal

I set my goal at 135 (BMI of about 21). My Doctor did not set a goal for me. Goal weight is really personal and has many factors: How much did you weigh to start with and how long?: It's going to affect how much extra skin you have and how heavy your bones are. How much muscle have you retained/added/lost during the process? 10 lbs. of muscle is a different volume than 10 lbs of fat. How old are you? As we age, our face looks better with a little more weight (one reason I didn't shoot for my youthful weight of around 120). What kind of build do you have/prefer? Are your bones large, are your hips wide, is your chest large, do you prefer a more rounded look? If so, that's a few pounds there. I feel great at my goal. Lynda
  2. Last night like at 2:30 am I woke up extremely nauseated and with a little diarrhea. I felt like I was going to throw up but tried very hard not to... I finally gave up after 30 min of holding it in and let go- But nothing came out- I had like dry heaves and burps of air- nothing came up- I woke up feeling fine and after this happened did take a phenergan in case it happened again- I fear vomiting now but was feeling so bad I didnt know what to do- I have been on foods for 10 days and the last 5 we were out of town so my "schedule" and routing were off kilter- I have not eaten anything bad; stayed healthy- but it was weird.... I dont know if I ate too much or too fast and it just settled in an akward place... Has this happened to anyone else?

  4. Hi, My conversion surgery was Feburary 19, 2018. I have lost 55 lbs and is happy with my slow weight lost. My diet is ok most of the time. My problem is not drinking water. I want to try to lose a total of 100 lbs by my anniversary date. [emoji4] Sent from my SM-T820 using BariatricPal mobile app

Like why is easy for others and so hard for me

im 5"10. And its certainly is discouraging...I know im complaining about losing like 70lbs. But 20 was before surgery. I usually eat portion size of about half a sandwich but I would say my pouch holds between 4=8 ounces Depending on day. I havent been counting calories religiously but estimate between 900=1300. But im up at 7am till 11pm so its a long day lol.....ughhhh...idk

    Making a life changing decision

Here are a few rules of thumb: 1) The average expected weight loss from sleeve is only 60%. I don't know what the standard deviations and bell curves look like, but I would strongly suspect less than 1% of the sleever population is able to lose 100% of their excess weight, though that is the goal of almost the entire pool, and even less can enter a skinny BMI range (unless they began at little more than 35 BMI, hadn't been there that long, and had been naturally skinny in the past). 2) Weight regain following the nadir is extremely common, and nobody needs to try especially hard to make it happen. If you happen to fall into that lucky 1%, it is much easier to climb back out of it than it is to get into it in the first place. 3) If you lose too much and then start regaining to get to where you want, it can be very difficult to stop the regaining process in its tracks, and you could be fast on your way back to 260 or more. 4) By the time you are anywhere near approaching 100% weight loss, should you be among the people the can achieve that, far more than a year will have elapsed. By that time, none of us are really losing any faster than we would under a diet/exercise-based caloric deficit. In other words, once we are considered success stories (about half of excess weight loss), the weight at which we lose will be quite sluggish. If you reach a weight you are happy with, it is very easy to bring that rate to zero, but you need to be mindful of the 10-15% regain that is common, so my personal advice would be to lose every pound your tool will allow you too, knowing that the final settling place will be something a little higher than that, and hopefully around your personal ideal weight.

    TWO weeks !!!!!

Hi Sarah! Here are some suggestions that I think will make you feel better: Make your list of thinks to take: - Warm, comfortable clothes -- I went to Wal-Mart and bought men's BUM equipment, 100% cotton sweatshirts that were $10-$15 each. - Slippers - Gas-X - An antacid -- I use Prevacid and I've not yet had any problems - ear plugs - the recovery houses are noisy as is the clinic - rest! as well as walk (I did stairs) during recovery. This time is for you so take advantage of it and -- rest. - throw away facecloths -- use a clean face/wash cloth everyday -- if you can, just leave them in the trash. Wal-Mart has a package of 5 for $2.00 - inexpensive cotton underwear -- 2 pair for surgery day as the surgery pair will be quite soiled with iodine, etc. from the surgery (if you can, make these disposable as well) (My point is: pack what you need but bring back as little as possible so that the return trip is as 'easy' as possible) I did not take Vitamins the week of surgery. But, I started again, the week after. Do contact Melissa with any questions -- she will help. Do positive, do well!

    Hypothyroid Issues

HiI Everyone! So I went to my nutritionist today to ck in and it'll be 3 months since my surgery nxt wk. Ive had a 1cc fill about a month ago and I've lost 10lbs (I was careful to NOT say ONLY 10 lbs bc it's a loss nonetheless!) anywho in reviewing some bloodwork I did about a month ago she said my thyroid is out of control...(hypo).. I'm going back to see the MD nxt wk to see if medication wb required but I've been diagnosed before (2010) as "intermittent hypothyroid" most annoying diagnosis ever.. However THC levels have only gotten worse post surgery.. I read that having surgery, stress and other factors can trigger the hormonal imbalance.. Has anyone else experienced this? Where you put on meds? Had surgery to remove thyroid/did it help? Change of diet? Any info would be helpful.

    Head Hunger Vs. Me

I've found myself falling into this trap when I'm at home and bored, or around lots of yummy foods. So, I only keep healthy Snacks in the house, I try my best to stay busy or entertained. There are always yummy junky things at my mum's house, which I find myself grabbing for every 10 to 15 minutes. In those situations, I put the food onto a higher shelf that requires a stepping stool. That way, getting to the food takes effort, and I usually give up.

    Hypothyroid Issues

OKay, first post for me, banded 10/15/10 have had hypothyroid since i was a slim & fit 40 yr old, am 66 1/2 now. Endo doc always had me at mid-higher levels of Synthroid, but at 50 my weight just kept adding on, 10 lbs a year at least. Good results from LB intil about 14 mos ago, i plateaued-out--but have kept same weight while exercising & not exercising. Last 6 mos, my thyroid has been fluctuating an unusual amount. I take .150 mcg Synthroid, which is 2 below the top amount, of about 10 dosages. I test again in 6 weeks. My band was put back to 10 cc after a painful 6 month journey discoverying my reflux had returned with a case of gastritis, just diagnosed by the gastro doc. Oh yes! NO Contrast die for people like me because I am alergice to the IODINE used in the contrast! A good thing to know at my age, but i am not complaining as I have really enjoyed health so far with all my parts intact! But, the pouch was dilated & sagged over the band, i think, because gastro doc sucked food particles during the endoscopy. So now, i am talking to my pouch to heal and not be saggy so Dr Stahl at Kirkland Clinic in Birmingham Alabama can put some restriction back. I just had to give a promo to the doc & the clinic is pretty well organized & fantastic & everything I have had done there. I live 45 milies south of Birmingham, the great medical mecca of the area. And, I had stopped my wellness visits at least 6 months ago, so this is my fault for not being more in touch--i knew something was really really wrong when i could no longer drink 10 oz of water at a time, it just took 3 weeks for me to get diagnosed & treated. Anybody even considering of voting for Obama, just realize that people like me will have to wait many more weeks of pain & discomfort to get treatment for stuff like this w/Medicare because the number of docs will radically thin out! will post again after i see the endo doc & the bariatric doc Stahl. I just pray my pouch can recover its elasticity--but I'm an older bird, so maybe not. Oh, also, with plateau, the skin & muffin top in jeans seems to be reducing slowly...somewhat. But, i am still a happy grandma & very thankful for what the band has helped me do...so far!

  13. I was supposed to have Surgery Sept 9 of this year and started the Liver Shrink diet Aug 10. I have stuck with this diet even though the first week was VERY hard. It consist of a Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch, a small fruit and 1 cup yogurt for snack, 6oz meat 1 cup salad greens with 1 tablespoon fat free dressing 1 cup certain veggies and 2 carbs for dinner, and a Protein Shake for an evening snack. I went to get my preop lab work done and then the day before surgery was to happen, it was canceled due to my liver enzymes were too high. Back in June my liver was in perfect shape. Enzymes were fine and ultrasound was fine and now they are very high. I think this could be the diet doing this but my dietitian does not think it is so they want me to continue the diet until I get released from my PCP. They are going to check my enzymes again Monday and if they are down my PCP will give the ok for surgery and surgery will be on the 30th. Has anyone else ever had trouble with the diet causing your enzymes to be high? Thanks for your input Elizabeth

    This is about my husband

By the way, it also depends on you. You may find yourself at a point where you know you were staying with him for the wrong reasons. A lot of heavy people cling to the first person who cares. This is a possibility. I know there were several times growing up had my mom been thin, she would have left my dad. Don't get too excited though. I went through that phase but it was only because I wondered what skinny life was like. I'm cool now and can experience it with my boyfriend. He isn't as bothered by guys hitting on me because he knows my self esteem just wants to be flattered and I am not taking the bait. So it depends on you. If you've had thoughts about leaving him before, than they will just come at you X 10 now. If you haven't you may get second thoughts but see a counselor. This way you can have your thoughts sorted out.

How Much Did You Lose The First 2-4 Weeks?

I was 229 the day I had surgery on June 4th. On Saturday June 9th I was 235. I gained 6 pounds. I lost weight at the rate of 1 to 1-1/2 pounds every other day for the first few weeks. I have lost 23 pounds since June 4th or 29 if you count the fact that I gained 6 pounds in the hospital. My weight loss is slowing down a little bit now. I lost 60 pounds pre-surgery though at the rate of about 10 a month and in the 2 week pre-op I lost less than most people and that was 10 pounds and I didn't cheat and I had 3 shakes a day for 14 days and only had a few sugar-free popsicles and like 2 sugar-free jellos....if that. Since I dieted the entire pre-approval time I had already lost my water weight. Good luck to you on your surgery in a few days. Sending you my thoughts and prayers.

Hi LVMOM, I would definately try to get in to get a fluro so you can check the position of your band. I don't want to scare you but this is pretty serious and you need to make sure that you dont' have a slip. You have done outstanding with your WL since your banding but you shouldn't be having these reoccuring problems, espc since you had more fluid taken out of your band. I had similar problems about 2 mos ago and I thought I had a slip for sure. I had xrays done and my band was fine but very irritated and swollen, so my doc completely unfilled me for a month and gave me some Nexium to calm down my stomach. It sounds like you may have some reflux too possibly. Don't take no for an answer if they try to tell you that you are fine. Demand a fluro and then go from there. Personally, I would get a complete unfill to let your band and stomach rest and recooperate for a bit. It helped me immensely. Good luck to you. ~Liz~ 03/10/06 241/164/160 5'7''

    Tiny pants

My surgery was 1/14 and I am down to a size 18 from a 24. It feels great, but I am mostly out of clothes in my closet to wear so I went hunting for some deals on jeans. I have bought some things from the local thrift stores but one of the stores near me was having a 40% off one pair and get the second pair totally free. It brought the cost down to about $13 for a pair of jeans, which is only a few more bucks per pair than my local thrift stores. I went a little crazy and bought pants all the way down to a size 9/10. I have never been smaller than a 14. I was a 14 in high school. Looking at those tiny pants and trying to imagine wearing them is kind of impossible. For all of you that have gotten to goal - what size did you end up in? Did any of you start in a 24 and end up in a 9/10 or smaller? Is it possible for our bodies to change that much after RNY?
  20. After the surgery, I developed a serious problem with constipation. I tried several things to resolve the problem including Probiotics, Metamucil, and laxatives; without success. The only thing that was effective was using glycerin suppositories. I just couldn’t accept inserting a suppository up my rectum every three days for the rest of my life as a viable solution. This was a serious problem. Then almost by accident I stumbled on a simple solution. I found that eating an apple or two each night before I went to bed corrected the problem. But it was important to also eat the skin of the apple. I have followed this regiment for the past 10 months and no problems. My mother who did not have surgery also suffers from this type of problem. I suggested she eat an apple each night before bed. But she says she can't because she has false teeth and the skin gets stuck. I was at my monthly bariatric surgery support group meeting yesterday and another person said they experienced the same problem because of her false teeth. She wanted to know if I had any solution. I thought about it and decided that perhaps one could blend the apple. I experimented today. I cut the core out of the apple and blended it with the skin to the consistency of apple sauce in my Ninja blender. I soon discovered that I needed to add a little liquid to make it blend properly - about a quarter or half cup of (no-sugar) apple juice. It seems like it might work. But since I still have my teeth, I am not able to perform a complete test. So if you suffer from constipation and if you have false teeth and are up to an experiment - try blending an apple a day with the skin (but not the core) and let me know (1) does this type of apple sauce get stuck in your teeth and (2) does it solve your constipation problem.

    I got an unfill today

Thanks to everyone that post about issues with fills. I have had some issues.... I am being told that I have a 10 cc band but I only NOW have .5cc in the band and at times I have the "stuck" feeling.... and I wonder all the time how that is possible with such a small amount of fluid in my band. I now know that I can not eat bread anymore...first time since I have been banded. and I still have nausea on and off every day and the meds are not helping. So I wonder if the nausea is something I will have to "Deal" with. Again Thank you for all the posts..... I know that I am not alone!
