waiting a year is a good idea - sometimes things shift around and you start looking a lot better. Plus many of us gain 10-20 lbs after hitting our lowest weight, unfortunately. Although not everyone would agree with me, it's probably good to have plastic surgery when your weight has more-or-less stabilized.

New here - BMI 34.7 too small to seek surgery?
It’sMe posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello - I’m new here and am thankful for the great info on this site. I’m considering WLS and am wondering if my BMI is not high enough (heaven knows I don’t want it to get higher). I am 37, 5’2”, 190 pounds (BMI 34.7 so just below the 35 mark). I seem to put on about 5-10 pounds every few months. I have to take 4 medications to control my blood pressure, have pain in my feet, ankles and right knee. I think I actually waddle when I walk and that’s obscene. I just learned I also have high cholesterol and I snore really badly. I have been overweight and steadily gaining for about 10 years despite numerous diets, pills, subscriptions, memberships. I am tired of feeling bad in my own skin, and am embarrassed that I now cannot comfortably cross my legs, tie my shoes comfortably, take the stairs without being winded, etc. My weight is also now affecting my career as I have been told that leaders “look a certain way” and “have a certain physical presence.” I think these are coded statements about my weight. I also cannot participate in one of my favorite activities (horseback riding) because I am embarrassed about my weight and worried about being too big for my horse. I am motivated for a big change in my life, but also scared about post op meal planning and having to make my entire life revolve around food planning. I feel like for so long I have counted calories, carbs, macros, steps, activity with varied results, and all I want is to be free, healthy, and balanced in my body without thinking about food for every hour of every day. I am willing to pay out of pocket, and have reached out for a consultation locally. I guess I just wanted to say hello to this community and hear your stories if you have been in a similar place. -
Is my weight loss okay or slow?
catwoman7 replied to fitgal2021's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
we normally just see big losses the first month, because that's mostly water. And by "big loss", for most of us, that means 15-25 lbs (there are some who have bigger drops than that, but unless they're the size of people on "My 600 lb Life", it's not that common). after the first month, a loss of 10 lbs a month (again, for the average WLS patient - NOT the people on TV) is pretty normal. so in other words, you're fine. -
Sleeve 2011 and just had the Roux en y bypass questions
mae7365 replied to wendy100's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Best thing.....NO MORE ACID REFLUX Worst thing.....Dumping Surgery 10/29/2020 @ 187 lbs. Weight loss since surgery..... 52 lbs. That's also a BEST THING! Since my surgery was for the stomach/esophagus issues, the weight loss has been a bonus! After the sleeve, I had a banana sized stomach. Now I have a golf ball sized stomach. The remainder of my stomach and my duodenum (upper most part of my upper intestine) is still inside, the duodenum is just connected further down into my ilium (lowest part of the upper intestine). So in the revision, nothing is taken out like with the sleeve. The digestive track is just rerouted to bypass the stomach and duodenum. I hope that makes sense. -
Southern Cali Kaiser Permanente

Hello ladies, I am also with Kaiser Options program and I am about to finish my 10 week classes this June 4th. Unfortunetly, my Vitamin D labs came back low at 22 and it needs to be at around 30. So I have beem prescribed some vitamin d and need to recheck labs after 6 weeks. This will be delaying my process. 😔 I am doing my options program through the Downey, CA location and we were not told anything about a psych evaluation so not sure if every location is different. I was told once the labs are rechecked in 5 more weeks to be exact, I will be scheduled for a physical examination, then see a Bariatric surgeon to talk about which surgery option, and finally be scheduled for surgery. Hopefully it does not take a long time. 🤞. We were suppose to get labs at week 3 of the classes in case anything came abnormal, but mine were not orderes until week 7 so that is why everything for me is getting delayed. Also, the ekg had to be done at week 3 for same reason. Luckily mine was normal. Good luck to you ladies! -
nicotine Question about nicotine test on surgery day...
kosmickarasu posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello there! I am Jayla and new here. Age 34, 5'3 Hw 392 CW 290 I have roux en y surgery on June 3rd. After a ton of set backs 3 years of work to get surgery I am finally approved and getting surgery in 3 days. Long story sorry! I quit smoking for 2 years before trying to get surgery back in 2019 then lost my insurance and got delayed. After getting back into program in January of 2020 I started smoking during covid when I got a divorce. I quit 10 days before my nicotine test and surgeon meeting etc for insurance approval all went great.... Well... my surgery got delayed again do to the prior authorization team not sending things correctly and requiring an appeal and resubmisson again. Delayed another 4 months until June 3rd. I started smoking again after having a child like idiot temper tantrum moment when this happened. Not my finest decision obviously I know that. I know smoking is bad and bad for surgery. Last detail is that I have asthma and super allergies in the spring and fall that make me have very bad post nasal drip and mucus. I normally go on prednisone to help... well cannot take them anymore... and if you don't know quitting smoking creates even more of this post nasal drip... resulting in tight tubed and feeling of drowning so I was struggling to immediately quit again. At my pre-op exam the doctor conversed with my pcp on a plan to have me quit smoking 2 days before surgery on a cut down regimine while taking antihistamines and said it should be fine. My surgeon of course did not want me on any nicotine for a few weeks prior to surgery. I am worried he will cancel on surgery day even if this was advised by my pcp and pre-surgical exam doctor. Has anyone ever passed the first nicotine test but failed on surgery day? What happened? Do they always again test on surgery day? Is it a blood or urine test? Any tips for passing or how to handle this? Thank you all for your time and consideration. I really would rather not postpone due to a flub on my part when I have been so successful in my journey already. -
Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?
BriarRose replied to Roses436's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am over 10 years post gastric sleeve. I waited for my *** to do the sleeve vs an RNY because of medication I need to take orally and was not recommended to have the RNY. Weight loss surgery was the BEST THING I have ever done for myself. I was in my mid 50s. 5'3 and 320 pounds when I started. I lost a few pounds before I went in to start !!! I am now 65 years old. I lost 145 pounds. Yes, I am still overweight - but I lost 145 pounds. I work full time, have the same career for 40 years. I am active, I garden and keep chickens for fresh eggs, grow organic fruit and veggies. I rake and hoe and walk and am more active NOW at 65 then I was at 40. NOT one regret at all. Also, I eat beef on occasion; when I want to. And I eat chocolate every darn day. Mind you - not a lot. I have learned the value of a really good piece of chocolate. No hershey bars here. But a lovely piece of dove chocolate ? YUM. I re-learned how to feed my body. Protein and fresh veggies and fresh fruits. Healthy fats, and keep my carbs down. Instead of a "rice bowl" think of it as a chicken and veggie bowl. I might sprinkle rice on top as a garnish !!! Move your mindset to "HEALTHY". I went from a 4x plus size to wearing a 14/16 petite. I am thrilled. My doctors are thrilled. Find the RIGHT support team. Start with supportive doctors. Best Wishes. -
Hi Julie and you others, I got my band in May 2012. It worked fine, got down from 285 the day of surgery to 240, then stalled. A few years later tried phentermine, which helped me lose more, for one day in August 2019 I crossed from obese to overweight! Currently back up to 235, having lots of reflux. Just had a total unfill and orders to get an upper GI. I want revision to bypass but we’ll see. I miss the “old gang”, B52, gowalking, jfc193, jim1967, carolinagirl, and 2muchfun.

I am doing a 3 week liquid diet too. It starts tomorrow. I have to be under a certain weight by June 15th, so I am just starting it a little early (my surgery is scheduled for the 21st). My daughters are freaking out about the idea of a liquid diet and my husband is worried that I will be hangry all the time, which surprisingly makes me less worried and more focused because someone has got to keep it together - lol! I do plan to have my three allowed protein shakes a day, as these are the only things of substance I am allowed to have, and treat them like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Congratulations on the weight loss - that is 10 pounds you do not have to worry about after surgery! I am hoping for the same!

Considering band to bypass revision
Daddyof4 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi everyone, I had my lap band installed on May 21, 2012. Starting weight was 293, was 285 the day of surgery, got down to around 240, stayed there a while, then started phentermine which helped me lose more. For a single day in August of 2019 I crossed from obese to overweight and am now back up to 235. Recently, whatever I ate got stuck and had to be “ejected” after which I could resume eating. Along with this came an increase in reflux, to the point of having stomach acid in my mouth a few times. Saw the NP, she suggested unfilling the band, getting an upper GI and seeing where to go after that. I am reluctant to refill the band because I fear the reflux will return. I want to get a revision to sleeve or bypass; thinking bypass would have less chance of reflux returning. I wish I’d gotten bypass in the first place but thought the band was safer. I’d be grateful for any advice anyone cares to offer. Thanks! -
Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first

oh my goodness - yesterday was a big NSV for me - I went on a 10 mile bike ride! I still can't believe I rode that far! My legs were jelly at the end and I am sore today, but it was soooooo fun! Being on my bike makes me feel like a happy kid. -
My current obsessions are chia pudding and homemade sugar-free gummy bears. I love making different flavors of chia pudding; my favorites are chocolate raspberry (tastes like brownie batter!) and pumpkin spice. I never knew how easy it is to make homemade gummy bears -- just some gelatin and flavoring (either 2 packs unflavored gelatin + 1 single-serve sugar-free drink mix, or one unflavored gelatin + 1 flavored gelatin; I've also made them with real lemon juice and lime juice). I bought some gummy bear molds on Amazon, and voila: sugar-free gummy bears that don't cause diarrhea. I also recently discovered Skinny Girl salad dressings. They're fat-free, sugar-free, and 10-15 calories for 2 tbsp. I've tried balsamic vinaigrette, roasted garlic vinaigrette, poppyseed, buttermilk ranch, and honey dijon, and I love them all.

What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
catwoman7 replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I lost 235 lbs (initially) and got down to a normal BMI, and I know others who've done it as well, so it's definitely not impossible. HOWEVER, only about 10-15% of patients make it that far, so they may tell you to chose something more realistic - at least at first. I was discouraged from making that goal (although my first goal was 200 lbs, which they said was realistic), but I was able to make it all the way. Some of us do.... -
I had the sleeve 5 years ago lost 125 lbs gained 35 back because I went back to old habit of 1 meal a day. just had the bypass on 5/10 and have currently lost almost 15lbs! It’s a different feeling I have before I could feel myself getting full now I can’t but then my stomach will start to hurt and gets hard so I know I’m full no bad habits coming back this time!

What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
laurenantics replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Aloha, Not trying to hijack your question, but I also am struggling with this question. My pre-surgery meeting with my surgeon is 6/22 where I expect we'll discuss this, with surgery (DS) on 7/12. I'm heavier than most on this board with a CW of 411 at 5 foot 6 inches, aged 42 years. At first I thought, 200 is a weight that I can live with as I can travel, sit in single plane seats/bus seats and zipline and skydive and bungee jump and ride in rollercoasters, etc. etc. But as the weeks tick by, I don't want a weight that I can simply "live with". If I'm going to alter my body so significantly, I'd like to thrive! I'd like to get out of "obese" and "overweight" BMI's. The lightest I've weighed as an adult is 185 pounds and that was when I was 19 years old. Even though it sounds absolutely nutter, I'm gonna tell my surgeon I'd like to weigh 154 so I'm officially in a "normal" BMI. He may laugh or scoff, but hey, it's a goal. A 257 pound loss may be impossible, but I'm ready to shoot for the stars after imprisoning myself for so long. -
May Surgeries - check in!

For real! Day 10 here and I usually LOVE soup but this just may change my mind about that. LOL It's like, when you feel hungry no amount of broth, water, or yogurt is gonna cut it. I NEED MEAT!! LOL -
I had the sleeve done 10 years ago and missed the memo on not drinking carbonated water. I stretched my tummy out and got hungry again, of course means more food and weight gain. 🙄 On the 19, I had the bypass done. It’s more aggressive than the sleeve and the advances in 10 years convinced me to do it. I’m less than 2 weeks in but I think, if I follow the rules, this will be the fix. good luck on your journey

What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?

My surgery is tomorrow. They had originally told me to be there at noon. I was planning to stay up until 3 AM, then sleep until 10 so I wouldn't have so long to wait until I went to the hospital. But today they called and said to be there at 8:30. Maybe I'll just stay up all night, since I'll be getting plenty of sleep tomorrow.

What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
NovaLuna replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I chose 180 pounds as my goal weight it sounded incredibly unrealistic to me, but that was the weight I knew I would be happy with so that's why I chose it. I was actually surprised when the surgeons office said it was a realistic goal weight and told me I should be able to get there. I'm 16 months post-op now and in a two week stall that has my weight bouncing around 186-189 so once my weight loss picks back up I'm still only less than 10 pounds from my own personal goal weight. In my own opinion, your goal weight should be where you think you'll be happy at. Where you'll be happy with your body and your weight. I chose my goal weight because that was the weight I saw myself happy at. I was 13 the last time I was in the 180's (I'm 33 now). I'm currently in the 'overweight' BMI at 29 with my goal only being 1 point lower at 28, but I'm no longer obese or morbidly obese or super morbidly obese like I used to be. I used to be 389 pounds and I've lost more than 200 of that which still blows my mind! I used to be a 32-34 in womens jeans (depending on brand and cut) and now I'm a 12. I used to be a 6xl (34-36) in womens tops and now I'm either a medium (8-10) or large (12-14) depending on the shirt. I'm far happier in my body now then I ever was. Yes, I still want to lose those extra few pounds to get to goal and it'd be amazing if I could even lose a couple pounds past that and get into the 170's, but I'm happy with my weight now for the first time in more than 20 years. -
6 weeks in - what is a normal food day?
kellym1220 replied to DD87's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
At six weeks, I measured everything. My diet was as follwos: Breakfast - Coffee with 1/3 of a protein shake and collagen powder (19 grams of protein). Mid Morning - hard boiled egg OR CHOMPS (meat stick with 9 grams of protein) OR Protein Shake Lunch - 3 oz protein, could be deli turkey or ham and cheese, or ground beef/chicken with taco seasoning and refried beans. I would also buy low carb tortillas and make a little wrap or burrito. Dinner - 3 oz protein (chicken breast/thigh, steak or fish) plus small portion of veggies. I tried not to snack at this stage, but snacks would be 1 oz of nuts, string cheese or CHOMPS. And at least 64 oz of water. Good luck! -
What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
catwoman7 replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I kept changing mine. When I started, I weighed 373 lbs. When they asked me at the bariatric clinic during one of my first appts what my goal was, I blurted out 200 lbs, realizing that was probably a pipe dream and there was little chance of me getting down that low. So I was shocked when they said that was a reasonable goal (!). When I got down to 220-ish, I revised my goal to 180. The dietitian said I'd have to work hard, but it'd be attainable if I really worked at it. So then when I got there, I told her I wanted to shoot for 150 now, since for me that is within a normal BMI range She told me that that was probably unrealistic, that only about 10% of their patients make it that far, so not to get my hopes up - but I made it. Then I wanted to go lower. I just wasn't sure how low. So I had a DEXA scan at 146 lbs (the kind they do in sports labs or those commercial places, since those include fat percentage. The ones you get at doctor's offices don't include that). I told the scan technician I'd had WLS and wondered how much more weight I could lose. I was shocked when she said I was done losing weight - my body fat was 22%, which is lean for a woman. I couldn't believe it! Anyway, my weight kept dropping into the 130s (I was obviously too thin at that point - I looked pretty awful), but then, like most people, I put on 10-15 lbs during year 3 (the infamous "bounce back") But I looked much better than I did in the 130s. Mid-140s to low-150s is where I looked and felt my best (I've since put on about 10 lbs (depending on the day) thanks to COVID, which I'm trying to get off at the moment - but I won't go down in the mid-130s again...too low) anyway, suffice it to say, pick something that sounds attainable for you at the moment, knowing you can always revise it later.
