My little lap band monster is coming out!

I may need to get my band removed due to dilated esophagus and restriction. The doctor recommends a conversion to bypass but I really don't want that as it seems such an invasive surgery which is why I had the band in the first place. I lost 110 lbs since 12/2010 (330 -> 220) and I am pretty happy, however, I am worried about potential weight gain after removal. Not sure I got the will power and discipline without the band. I definitely do not want to get back to my old weight or even close to it and I also do not want to have the removal surgery and then maybe another surgery later for bypass.
  2. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to "run the body's metabolism," it is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism. The estimates vary, but approximately 10 million Americans have this common medical condition. In fact, as many as 10% of women may have some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency. One of the symptoms of hypothyroidism in weight gain or increased difficulty in losing weight. Because the body is expecting a certain amount of thyroid hormone the pituitary will make additional thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in an attempt to entice the thyroid to produce more hormone. This constant bombardment with high levels of TSH may cause the thyroid gland to become enlarged and form a goiter (enlarged thyroid). Left untreated, the symptoms of hypothyroidism will usually progress. Rarely, complications can result in severe life-threatening depression, heart failure, or coma. Goiters and some other thyroid conditions can be treated with radioactive iodine therapy. The aim of the radioactive iodine therapy (for benign conditions) is to kill a portion of the thyroid to prevent goiters from growing larger or producing too much hormone; I feel that rather than focusing on the weight gain, the better focus should be correcting the enlarged thyroid. I recommend you discuss this issue with your doctor.

    I've gained weight!

I called my weight loss clinic and spoke with the insurance coordinator. She said I could definitely be denied due to weight gain but to have my doctor for my 6mo diet make notes about my medications changing. I have Carefirst BCBS. Now I'm even more nervous.
  5. First off, it's great you finally started incorporating exercise. That is definitely a MUST for continued loss and eventual maintenance. However, as counter-intuitive as it is, starting a new exercise plan can actually slow loss or even cause some weight gain initially. The key is to not get discouraged and to stick with it. Eventually it will pay off big time!
  6. Help! Has anyone been denied by their insurance for gaining weight during the 6mo diet? I've gained around 20lbs! My doctor took me off of phentermine that was somewhat helping me with my eating habits. I only have this month and September left for the 6mo diet and have everything else done. I'm just really nervous about the weight gain. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks!!!

    Self sabotage

I would guess that almost all of us have felt the same way, I know I can relate. We are bombarded with the message from society that obesity is a character flaw. I had an awesome surgeon and one of the best things he did was educate me on the disease of obesity and the physiology of weight gain/loss. That helped a tremendous amount toward relieving a lot of guilt. With modern world of abundant food and industrial food production there is a reason that obesity is epidemic all over the world.

    Who Are You?

Hi all! I am 56 years old, wife, mother (of 2 college-age kids), dental office manager, Episcopal deacon, and sick of my weight. Sick of pain in my knees and feet. Sick of missing out on so much that I want to do in life. I've struggled my whole life long. Lots of dieting, lots of weight loss and then weight gain. The frustrating thing is that every time I lose weight it finds me again, AND it brings friends with it! So I was only 15 pounds overweight the first time I went on a diet when I was 15 years old. Now I'm 150 pounds overweight! I started thinking seriously about WLS more than a year ago when my husband and I met with a retirement planner and his first question was, "Tell me what you want your retirement to be like." I had a million ideas - all of which involved me fitting into airplane seats and hiking all over exotic locales. I was in so much pain (knees and feet) I realized that, unless I made a signifiant life change, in 7 -10 years I wouldn't be hiking exotic trails but I'd be in a wheelchair! I spent six months working out with a trainer and watching my eating (tracking every bite, etc.) and only lost 10 lbs! Seemed like I was going to be fat forever. Then, one day, my daughter finally came clean with me and tearfully told me how worried she was that she was going to miss out on having a mom for important events in her life - like college graduation, wedding, children. I realized I had to do something drastic or she would be right. I had VSG on June 2, 2015 at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, after having completed the 3-month medically-supervised diet required by my insurance company (lost 17lbs in the process!). So far, I'm doing well - 63 lbs gone from my highest to now, 40 since surgery. I feel AMAZING - knee pain is gone! I keep thinking, "If I feel this good now, IMAGINE how I'm going to feel at goal!!" Can't wait to experience that because exotic locales are waiting!!

    Suddenly insecure

It's very important to to cement healthy eating habits during the all important "honeymoon" period (6-18 months post surgery) while restriction is great and hunger is low. After time, the sleeve will lose its effectiveness, so if you haven't changed your eating habits, you are at a very high risk for weight gain. It's not magic. You've got to work the tool so it will work for you.
  10. Thanks for the compliments on the articles! I am so glad they are useful. Yep - WLS (especially gastric sleeve and bypass) can definitely affect (reduce) ghrelin levels and therefore reduce hunger. That's right - so that's a way WLS helps you eat less and lose weight, because you're less hungry. In this article, I was thinking about the factors that contributed to weight gain that WEREN"T strictly about hunger - because I think all of us (me, anyway) used to be guilty of eating when we weren't truly biologically hungry, but eating for other reasons, like we wanted food or for emotional reasons. Great point, though, and definitely a consideration when choosing which type of WLS, since lap-band doesn't affect ghrelin in the same way sleeve does.
  11. I have Aetna and I had to show all my PCP notes showing weight loss attempts from the past 2 years with no weight gain. 3 months of those had to be consecutive. I had to have a letter from my PCP recommending the surgery and listing my BMI and co-morbidities. I was at a starting BMI much higher than you, so I can't say for sure how it will work for you. Aetna does have a few requirements but they are not as tough as some. I have even heard that if the BMI is lower but you have co-morbidities they will take those along with the weight into consideration. Good luck and try not to kill anyone in the process...one day you will look back on this and hopefully laugh?

@@Bellarose100 Bahaha - I LOVE it !!!!! Well....I must confess, I haven't tried very hard since my original appt 9 months ago - I weighed 82 kg, so my BMI was probably 29/30, but I managed to put on 8kg - I can't believe I hit 90kg, that's ridiculous for me - I am living proof that it's what you put in your mouth - I do boxing, spin, pump classes, go to gym, 4-5 times a week and I still managed that weight gain Although, I had a sinus infection for 2 whole moths Mar-April, so couldn't go to gym then. My BMI is now 33, plus I'm 45 (for 25 more days...) and have yo-yo'd so many times and tried every diet under the sun, so I think (hope) I should be ok. I really just wish I had my surgeons appt earlier (it's Sep 21) as he is the one who will make the final decision. I also have to wait for PHI, that's why I'm not booked in till Nov. Since then I have read & read & read, so I know it's not a magic pill (I've tried those - duromine was miraculous for 1 month....then didn't work ever again!!) I know it's a tool, but the fact that it's a permanent thing is what makes it so appealing to me. I am REALLY hoping that , along with the ghrelin reduction, my tastes will change, & I won't want chocolate, like so many sleevers I've read about!! chips are not a problem, only the evil Cadbury !!!! I'm going through Darebin Weight loss centre.
  13. I think the bottom line is that you want to do what's right for you. Yeah Dr.'s can have a chip on their shoulder about weight gain and not following their rules, but you know what we are the customer so to speak and well I don't go to the Dr. to get bashed I'm there for their expertise and assistance. If we could have lost weight on our own we would not be WLS patients or needing to be in their office, so there's that. I need them and they need me and you Yes they need to tell us what we are doing wrong, but they also need to be supportive and help us to understand and make the changes we need and if they are mean about it well it's gonna go in one ear and out the other. I would go to the Dr. and ask them to help you get a handle on things and help you not only get back on track but give you a jump start. You don't have to take negativity from the Dr.'s or staff. Go in there positive that you can do this, and ask them sincerely for their assistance and things should go well. Let us know how it goes!!
  14. For blue shield I had to go once a month for 6 months to the surgery doc office and meet with someone to satisfy the requirements for the insurance company to approve the surgery, and show no weight gain. After the 6 months and I had all the testing done they required, stress echo, endoscopy, it was only about 2-4 weeks before all was approved and scheduled a date. i am sure some are quicker and some may be longer. Good luck
  15. I had my surgery in 2010 (235 lbs 4'11") Today I weigh in at 134. I was at 120 for years but over the last 18 months I work out with weights, do bootcamp classes & try to get running in also. I exercise at least 3-5 days a week. My muscle has definitely increased. All weight gain isn't a failure or negative. I feel my overall body looks & is much better than that super skinny one it once was. Best of luck to everyone, it is a constant battle and fight. Don't give up.
  16. it's been a year and half seens my last dr.visit and i have gained 35lbs back i keeped trying to lose on my own and i just keeped gaining and i want to go to my dr.and get a fill but im afraid he will chew me out and maybe that is what i need to get me back on track so the question is has anyone went back to their doctor after a big gain?and if so what happened?i'm sure it depends on your dr.some can be asses.

I've gained and it's my fault.

I feel your pain! I too am a weight gain after 8 yrs of having gastric bypass... I was good for the first 4 years then the weight came back due to being depressed over losing a loved one. I was 298 at surgery 10 months later I weighed 156 ... A year later I was 135 I am now back to 230 and very depressed! I work out weight training 3 days a week for a hour and walk everyday 2miles and every night I use my elliptical and bike for a hour ... I have gone back to basics and no weight loss ???? went back to surgeon and he didn't seem to care!
  18. Im finding people who struggle to maintain weight after passing a 3 year mark. The first 3 years seem like magic in comparison. What do other long term sleevers experience? Several of us have been discussing this issue on "wt gained after sleeve" but people who are recently sleeved are writing about stalls. What we are experiencing is NOT a stall but an actual trend of weight gained. Sometimes in spite of sticking to same regimen (diet and exercise ) and sometimes because of physical difficulties interfering. Words of wisdom, anyone? We dont want to face total failure.

My Pre Op Diet Was All I Needed

(Sorry, operator error ) what I meant to say was theres not always time, money etc for a gym, nutritionist etc, for everybody. And sometimes, no matter how hard we try, the body just doesnt cooperate. As a man , you may not have dealt with the female problems , etc. that can cause, /keep weight gain. While you are certainly entitled to your opinion (and again, you have NOT had any WLS) to post your " my way is better " opinion /story on a WLS board was waaaaayy out of line............. and honestly, rather rude. ( I see our favorite "Lipstick Lady" has already jumped in (yay !) , now Im just waiting for SteveHud to make his presence known, so then I can sit back and watch the show........... popcorn anyone ?

    Psych eval tomorrow afternoon!

Generally they want to know if there are any underlying psychological issues behind your weight gain and whether you have the fortitude to stay with the program.
  22. I've gained 9 pounds since my 1st visit back in March. Has anyone gained weight during the preop phase???
  23. Hi Everyone, I have the band and am trying for a revision to RNY. My BMI is currently 37.5. I was denied last year as the Insurance company told me that I had to be at a 40 BMI for 5 years (the same rules as before I was banded). This seems a bit absurd that I would have to do the same song and dance for a revision. My only real complications have been GERD and lack of weight loss (I am fortunate). My question is - has anyone gained weight or somehow artificially inflated their weight consistently for approval for a short period of time to realize the goal to a revision? I don't want to gain 15 pounds and have keep it on for 4 more years to have the surgery! I feel like it is almost a bullying technique by the insurance company, esp. as it has been shown that the band is ineffective. I also realize that I sound kind of whinny (lol) and in the end I need to blame myself for my weight gain. I also realize that this is kind of an ethical question...but there has to be someone out there who has at least been in my boat? I think I might be beaten up a bit by asking this question...
  24. Anyone else? I did the 3 months of monitored weight loss. I had to lose 6 lbs over the 3 months, I lost 9. Saw the Dr mid July. Took her 2 weeks to get my referral. I see the surgeon next week. I have gained 3 to 4 lbs. There are so many factors as to why but I don't like excuses so I won't even get into them. Has anyone else had this happen and how did the surgeon address it? I plan on busting my butt this week to get them off again, I just wanna be prepared in case 1 or 2 linger. I always thought 6 lbs wouldn't be a big deal, but it was...
  25. I don't think it's ever too soon to plan against future weight gain. My eyes are still bigger than my stomach and it's an ingrained habit to monitor my intake. It's doesn't have to be a chore or hassle, it's just part of my life. The benefits of keeping tabs on my calories far outweigh the effort it takes to monitor my eating habits. “Once you understand that habits can change, you have the freedom and the responsibility to remake them. Once you understand that habits can be rebuilt, the power of habit becomes easier to grasp and the only option left is to get to work.” – Charles Duhigg
