Anyone else do a VSG to ESG?
Hop_Scotch replied to teedsg's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
I haven't had a revision to ESG but did have an original ESG (I now have a VSG). My personal opinon: I would think a bypass would have better longevity and outcome. https://bmiclinic.com.au/endoscopic-sleeve-gastroplasty-faq/ ESG following gastric sleeve: Endoscopic revision of a gastric sleeve is possible, however the weight loss that results is only approximately 10% of the baseline weight. There are likely more effective options which you can talk through with your Bariatric Specialist. -
I'm a bit lost : PCOS, losing slowly...
Spinoza replied to seyma's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I feel for you - it's hard enough going through weight loss surgery even when we lose weight at the rate we want to. Do you track calories? It might be worth doing so for a few days just to get a feel for where you are at the minute. Slow but sure can win the race just was well - don't give up, you're averaging a pound a week by the looks of it and that will all add up in the end. -
I'm a bit lost : PCOS, losing slowly...
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to seyma's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have PCOS and that is a factor when it comes to weight loss. It literally holds on to the weight. Also, if you start at a lower bmi, the weight will be slower in coming off. Are you sticking to the diet? Are you exercising several times a week? Are you snacking a lot? I agree, I would talk with your doctor, have your blood work done and hormone levels checked, and see if maybe taking Metformin will help. Also, pay close attention to your non scale victories. When the scale isn't doing what you want, those will be life savers. -
My short story of slow and steady weight loss
ThinIce replied to bluebellblue's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you for sharing your story, very inspirational. My initial weight loss was more typical than yours, but it is slowing down which I expected it to do. I've always been a slow loser too historically. I'm fine with it though. Gives me a chance to build muscle and wear out some of these clothes before it's time to buy a new size!!!! Also I've never been a fan of all the unsolicited comments others make when I'm losing weight. I'm hoping that slow and stead garners less of this overall. -
My short story of slow and steady weight loss
bluebellblue posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello all I thought I’d put my first post up to encourage others as I’m definitely a snail not a hare with weight loss, but getting there all the same. I had lapband surely nearly 15 years ago. Lost nothing. Didn’t work for me at all. Felt like a failure. Saved up again and decided to have the lapband removed and a bypass. Wasn’t that hopeful due to my previous experience but was desperate. Weighed 310 pounds and BMI 45. Surgery was fine with no complications. However I only lost a couple of pounds each week for the first few weeks. On about 500-600 calories a day. As food increases to about 800 calories at week 6, the slow but steady weight loss continued of 1 to 2 pounds a week. About six month stage I was light enough to join a gym. This made a huge difference to my mental health and energy. I took it slow but went three times a week. I was now on about 1000 calories a day and losing (you guessed it) 1 to 2 pounds a week. Sometimes I would lose 4 pounds a week but then nothing the week after. I didn’t really stall at all. I saw other people posting phenomenal weekly weight loss numbers. Not me! So here I am a year out and I’m eating about 1200 calories a day and losing 1 to 2 pounds a week. Lost over 100 pounds so far and feel fine plodding on as I am. So my advice is, keep tracking food, when you can try exercising, and don’t worry if your weight loss is steady like mine. You get there just the same. And, I’ve never felt better! -
First Month Out, How did you do.
The Greater Fool replied to SuziDavis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only knew the weight at the beginning of the month (day of surgery) and the last day at the 1 month follow-up. I didn't (couldn't) weigh myself at home as I was too large for a home scale. So, while I have no doubt I went through stalls I didn't actually see (or feel) any of them. No angst. No frustration. Just month after month of weight loss. When I was finally able to weigh on a home scale I weighed several times a day, it was a hoot seeing the weight go (usually) up and down during the day. Once the novelty wore off I returned to only weighing at follow-ups, and when they ended, only at medical appointments (if they ask, which isn't usual) or at annual physicals. There are other ways to know how we are doing. Since my primary goal was getting healthier and being able to move around better those are my key measures. They also happened to be my surgeon's key measures, he never once asked about my weight. How clothes fit is another measure. Mental attitude is yet another. Good luck, Tek ETA: I did not include any actual weights because my starting weight was so high that my monthly numbers look wildly high. This and other differences are why comparing numbers only creates more angst. -
I'm a bit lost : PCOS, losing slowly...

Hello. Really everyone is different. Without knowing all of your details it is hard to say. You could talk it over with your Dietician or Nutritionist? They could go over your diet with you, and see if they find something that could be slowing things down. Be open and honest, it will only help you. I eat carbs (minimal because of how much I can eat), my team and Nutritionist are very "balanced diet" friendly. But again, everyone is different. Some people's body hate carbs and other are fine with eating them. Like you mentioned, if you have less to loose than you will loose slower. As well as when people starting out bigger get closer to a "normal" weight they slow down substantially. I have a friend who has been trying to loose her last 20 lbs for months now. Just have to keep pushing. Good luck, loss is still loss no matter how fast or slow you think it is going! -
Hi everyone, I'm kinda new in here, don't know how it works but I need to share my experience because I don't know where I stand I've done the gastric sleeve at the begining of January with a starting weight of 219 lbs (99,5 kg). I'ts been 8 months since, and I'm now at 187 lbs (85kg). Am I paranoid or is it very very slow ? Only lost 33 lbs (15kg) I've got PCOS and I'm aware that having hormonal imbalances may affect my weight loss and my starting weight was maybe low compared to someone else but I am starting to feel worried about the surgery. Maybe it did not work out well for me ? Is it normal ? My doctor said I should be at 149 at the end. Is anyone else is in my situation or know someone in my condition ? I eat well, eat my veggies and protein first and I don't have a sweet tooth anymore (rarely rarely eat between meals). I know that my carb intake is still important but I mean I don't eat THAT much. I always eat it at the end of the meal, knowing that I can never finish my plate. Good water intake too. Thank you for any testimony and reassurance

Have you spoken to your surgeon? By now you should be able to eat a lot more than a couple of spoonfuls & a wide variety of foods & not feeling nauseous or throwing up (unless you eat something too dry, too coarse or eat too much or too fast of course). Personally I never had another shake after the liquid stage though I did find a good high protein yoghurt to boost my protein each day. I wasn’t hungry or interested in eating either for more than a year (wish I was still like that now though 😁). I used to eat to a schedule to ensure I got my protein & nutrients in every day (still do actually most days). Should stress that I didn’t worry too much if I didn’t eat all my portion if I didn’t want it. Even now, on days I’m not overly hungry, I’ll eat a lighter meal like a tub of yoghurt for lunch & not a heavier meat based dish. Are you doing any activity to compensate for muscle loss? I’m not an exercise/gym person but do use resistance bands & do stretches every day. The bands are great for toning muscles without adding bulk.

The beginning is the hardest because you're still recovering from surgery, still getting used to the huge changes to your lifestyle, but haven't seen all the benefits of the weight loss yet. It does get easier, as you progress through the post-op stages and lose weight. You will start to feel "normal" again, maybe a new and different normal, and this weird and difficult post-op period will eventually be a blur in your memory. Hang in there!

Anyone with a lower BMI get weight loss surgery to reduce comorbidities?
Barihopeful posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello all. I am in the process if trying to get approved for RNY. The more I read the more I think my husband should consider GB as well. His BMI is only slightly over 30 but he had apnea, diabetes, and Hypertension. He exercises a ton and although his diet is far from perfect, I would say it's much better than the standard American diet. We would it his diabetes and HTN would resolve however the bug question is.....is that likely to happen if he has a strong family history of both conditions on both sides of his family? The studies I've seen made it unclear if remission is possible and hinted that perhaps diabetes would return in few years. -
Stall/concerns post sleeve to bypass revision
SeattleLady replied to lex2287's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I need revision too. While reviewing the research it appears the average weight loss after revision is around "30 to 60" pounds in a recent study. However, I think there is hope. Beyond the numbers really is our food choices. You get to decide how much weight you will lose. For me, it's choices or excuses. Sent from my SM-G996U1 using BariatricPal mobile app -

I am having surgery on the 30th, VSG. I got a lot of questions but luckily for me, this forum helped a lot so far. I have a list of questions for the surgeon for the pre-op visit since I haven't been able to ask many questions in any of the 4-5 appts so far this year. I was only prescribed for 2 days of liquid diet even tho I have some abnormal liver test results. I'm afraid because I had GERD my whole life but I'm having the sleeve. Maybe the doctor thinks the weight loss will help with it (which has happened before with previous diets). -
First Week Post Op Nerves Are Shot
Arabesque replied to jdardenhill2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, breath. You just had a pretty major surgery. You’re going through a lot of physical, psychological & emotional changes & it takes time to sort them all out & work out what you’re doing. So feeling a little anxious is quite common. Yes, you can add additional protein powder to your shakes. You can add it to soups & broths too. Walking is the best exercise to begin as it doesn’t strain or overly tax your healing & recovering body. Remember you should limit your lifting, pulling, & reaching fir a few weeks while healing. Plus it helps with avoiding clots & with getting rid of any lingering surgical gas. Some activity is good but listen to your body as to how much you can do. Start with around your house inside &/or out a few times a day. Yes, you can go outside. (Funny they think fresh air is bad but they wander around your house with cigarette smoke over their clothes, in their hair & on their skin.) You don’t have any open wounds. The wounds are quite small usually each less than inch long & they’re covered anyway. Yes, bruising, swelling, tenderness, etc. around the wound sites is common. If it persists or gets worse contact your surgeon. Some people do have more discomfort after surgery & have trouble getting up & down to begin. Think of all the abdominal muscles that got poked, prodded & stretched (the gas alone stretches your tummy out) during the surgery. Some say sleeping in a recliner or propped up in bed helps. Others say binders help support the abdominal region. Sugar free popsicles contain artificial sweeteners which continue to feed your desire for sweet plus some can cause side effects like bloating, diarrhoea, etc. Water, shakes, soups/broths, herbal or green teas, milk, yoghurt drinks, etc. all contribute to your fluid intake. Mix it up for variety. Does your family really need to be there? I live alone & looked after myself without any issues after my both my sleeve & gall removal surgeries. Maybe it’s time to say thank you but I can manage okay alone now but I’ll call if I need help with anything. -
Surgery date postponed due to my PCP . Heartbroken
I-am-Amy replied to lindajlue's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Admittedly, I haven’t read through the whole post but got angry and hit reply. I also had a fusion. A 4 level cervical fusion plus cervical dystonia that has now advanced to the front of my neck and chin. Both my PCP and movement disorder neurologists were more than happily to sign off. They both said weight loss (specifically breasts not being so heavy & drawing my shoulders downward) could possibly help within symptom control. These puppies weigh me woman down! LOL ugh. I just had my revision sleeve to bypass literally just 5 DAYS ago and it couldn’t have went better. They do use the surgical robot though for these procedures. That’s the coolest thing ever. Also, to me, it sounds like your current PCP is a little lazy on top of it all. Is he an older doc? Like old school I mean? Seems Ike he’s asking you to do HIS homework work just so he can copy and paste what parts he would like to send to the insurance company. Tell him you will if he pays YOU for that letter. -
extremely common. Estrogen is stored in fat cells, and it's released during rapid weight loss. Lots of women report screwed up cycles and moodiness. It'll stabilize within a few months.

A DS is the Duodenal Switch. This is the surgery they do as the second stage of a sleeve or can be done by itself. Research has shown it to have the most weight loss of bariatric surgeries and usually the least regain. I hope this helps -
Loosing teeth after gastric bypass and the easy way out?
Notyourauntie replied to Erin18's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You can absolutely lose your teeth if you have bad teeth and you throw up often. Calcium deficiency can cause this. I forced myself to vomit 2x and I’m 1month and 10 days out. The hair thinning is more concerning to me but this is still worth it. I’m 30lbs down 5’6 was 220 after 2, 4, 7, 9 yo kids.‘I was able to get it and jumped -
Gall Bladder problems After VSG?
Notyourauntie replied to Crisscat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My bariatric surg was 8/8/22 5’6 highest weight after 4 kids (2,4,7,9) and a challenging relationship with their dad for 14 years. Down maybe 30lbs by now. When I was told on 9/12 I had a 26lb weight loss and told my GB had a stone so 10/3 is my surgery. It came to surface bc my pcp needed a f/up mri from a pancreatic cyst and Found excess Fluid in my stomachs. my surgeon said normal but not my gallbladder even the cyst is normal. Worse part is my mother and auntie both very judge mental and critical told me to pray. My mom said “People Get addicted to Surgery, not bc you feel better Eventually but bc the anesthesia😳😒) this being a Med necessity! But I’m so tired of the non support I’d honestly threw in the towel recently. -
Revision weight-loss RNY
Tufflaw replied to Chelll's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I got the sleeve in Dec 2016 and lost a lot of weight very quickly, about 120 lbs in maybe 6 or 7 months. Then I had some personal and professional setbacks and ended up screwing up the program and over the next few years put almost everything back on. Then last November I had revision to bypass and again the weight loss was pretty quick - not as fast as before but still very acceptable. I am now lower than the lowest weight I was with the sleeve, and have kept it off longer as well. And I continue to lose, so we'll see where the endpoint is. -
Can anyone tell me how your experience was in weight loss went after RNY revision. Like how fast did you lose and how much. I know everyone varies but just wondering if it is somewhat quick or slow? Thanks Sent from my SM-S906U using BariatricPal mobile app

Celebrations after Surgery
Queen ApisM replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm Greek. Everything is about food. All. The. Time. Honestly, it hasn't been a big deal. The holidays were about 4 months after surgery and it was fine. Those holidays were with my immediately family, who all knew, so that made it easier. I ate what I could eat (did a lot of tasting, which was more satisfying than I ever would have imagined). I didn't restrict myself - I tried what I wanted to try - and found that if something wasn't amazing I didn't bother with it and didn't feel like I was missing out at all. Still lost a ton of weight over the holidays without being anal retentive. In April, we had a big Easter celebration (8 months out from surgery) and I was very nervous because the extended family was there and I thought they would notice. Nope. They were all too busy stuffing their faces to notice what I was doing. Again, I ate what I wanted but listened to my body and stopped when I needed to stop. Whatever extra I couldn't eat on my plate, I tossed (something that I think you need to be ok with sometimes, post surgery, when taking food home isn't an option). Again, no one noticed or said anything, which is surprising because these people have no freaking filters or regard for feelings. None of them commented on my weight loss, either, other than to say I looked good. I don't live near them so I am sure they didn't have a good frame of reference for my starting size. This Thanksgiving should be interesting because at this point, I'm the smallest I have been in 16 years so I may get more scrutiny and attention as to what I am eating, but if they do... oh well. At this point I'm confident in what I eat in front of people and don't care. -
