    FIRST MAJOR NSV!

What are nsv? Sorry very new=)
  2. So I know a lot of people Celebrate every little NSV and to an extent, I do too. BUT! Today I think I have my biggest NSV yet. As of this morning, I have lost enough weight that I would no longer qualify for VSG since I had no co-morbities. To me, that is huge! Would love to hear some of the NSVs you considered major. Keep up the good work everybody!

    FIRST MAJOR NSV!

Ok, so in hindsight I realize this might not actually be considered and NSV since I'm talking about weight. But It's my BMI that really made me think of this.

    Silly NSV.....

Woooo Hoooo Patty! That's a great NSV... Congrats to you...You will have more and more of those as we continue to whittle away the pounds.
  5. I don't have surgery until next week, but I've been doing Water aerobics in preparation. Between the pre-pre-op diet, pre-op diet, and knowing that I'll be able to keep it off this time, I shrunk out of my bathing suit bottom! I finished the routine with one hand around my waistband. Not giving up yet.

Gaining and losing the same 2 pounds

LOL!! I don't think you're whining at all. It stinks when the scale won't move for us. Maybe don't weigh for a few weeks, but do go find some NSV's that will make you feel a bit better. Perhaps measuring if you did that pre-op, or trying on clothes that you wore before being sleeved. Even noticing how differently you feel while sitting in your car helps. I have noticed I've had to move the seat up in mine recently. What a great feeling!!! :-) It's the littlest things, I'm telling you!

    NSV

I did over 5 minutes on the elliptical. This may not seem big for many but I had only used the elliptical one other time since I joined the gym and barely made it to 3 minutes. Tonight I decided to give it another try and actually did over 6 minutes. It was much easier this time. So happy! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Very Hard

TPN: total parenteral nutrition https://en.wikipedia...teral_nutrition Folks as a general rule of thumb please don't throw out acronyms unless they are in common usage, e.g. VSG, NSV etc. BTW: TinaMarie, I did a double and triple take on your avatar, couldn't figure out just what part of the body it was showing

    First Fill

So I FINALLY got my first fill on 10/21. It took forever because I switched aftercare docs cuz I moved, and went to see my sister for 2 weeks. I was a bit upset at my weigh in cuz I was 5lbs up, but I had been at my sisters and eating what they cooked. But then my nutritionist asked if I had been working out. Well I had been doing a LOT of walking while on vacation. She said she could tell because my muscle was way up, and fat down. I told her I seemed to drop a size in clothes and she explained that was why. Even thou the scale said I weighed more, it was because of the muscle gain somewhat. She said it was typical that some ppl will gain a bit before a fill after healing up too. So that made me feel MUCH BETTER! Another NSV! Last night I bought some size 24 pants from Avenue. I was estatic when I put them on and they fit even a bit loose. I had gotten up to 26 and even had a couple 28's! WOOHOO>>>it's working, it's working! Well I got my fill and like everyone says, it doesn't hurt. I was nervous cuz I'm not the best with needles, and my new doc does adjustments w/ fluroscopy. It was no biggie at all, they put in too much at first, and by drinking the barrium we could see it wasn't draining past the band at all. So the took out .5cc and it was perfect! I only got 1.5cc, but it's working. It's been about 2 weeks and I'm down 10lbs. I'm not eating super clean either. Pretty Protein heavy, but still having some carbs here and there. But I'm eating WAY cleaner than I used to. My mom and I were talking about it, and figured I'm not getting 300-1000 calories a day just from sodas. I used to drink A LOT of coke, so I'm sure that's helping quite a bit. Anyway...things are going great! I'm eating sooooo much less than I was. The other night I had 6-8 small shrimp and some salad was was stuffed! That still just amazes me! Hope everyone else is making good progress too! I'm down a total of 26lbs. I feel like I'm making good progress, not sure how I'm doing compared to others. But I have hypothyroid and PCOS which both work against me, so just losing something is AWESOME to me! I can't remember the last time I was able to drop weight and keep it off.

    Nsv - Incomplete :(

For 20 years I have dreamed of being fit and healthy enough to participate in the Great Victorian Bike Ride, an eight day ride of almost 600km in my home state of Victoria. This year, 18 months after getting my lapband and losing 63kg, my husband and I set off from Lakes Entrance on our first ever Great Vic. First two days of riding were fantastic. The whole event was living up to my expectations with the riding, the camaraderie, camping and spending time with my husband. Day three dawned bright and sunny and we were on the road nice and early out of Briagalong. Morning tea stop in our former town of Maffra and then two and a half km down the road, disaster struck! I crashed out big time over the handlebars and onto the road. I was in agony, convinced that I had broken my leg! An hour later I was in an ambulance, six hours later I was finally released from the ER with a puncture wound and severe haematoma to my upper right thigh, along with a collection of bruises, scrapes etc that have developed quite colorfully over the days since. Yesterday, still on the camp for the ride, I decided to give it another go but wasn't even able to pedal. The physiotherapist then confirmed that i would not be able to complete the ride. I was devastated that I have not completed my dream or my NSV but am going to support my husband right through to the end on Sunday. And next year, I WILL complete my NSV and finish the Great Vic!

Do you keep your 'fat' clothes?

These posts are great, thanks!! Seems I'm not the only one who is still amazed that we don't have to plan on the weight coming back on, like we always did before.... I loved the comment about clown pants; that is how a co-worker described a pair I wore a few weeks ago! They may have to go sooner than I thought they would. Last night my best friend (who has a BMI of about 42 and is watching my lapband experience very closely) came over I tried on a boatload of clothes for her evaluation. Some things I thought I could work she said to get rid of; "that looks too big on you", or "by the time winter rolls around and you can wear that item again, it will be too big for you, so there is no sense saving it!" It was great, since it made the process fun. My favorite part was holding up a nice pair of pants saying 'I don't think I can fit these yet', but trying anyway and omg they actually did fit! Guess that qualifies as a NSV, huh? I am happy to know the clothes will be put to good use by other people who need them, since keeping them tied up in storage totes seems like a foolish waste. As we worked our way through piles of clothes, it was crazy to see just how many things I had squirreled away. Bit of a wake-up call, to realize I have way too many clothes!! But I know it is because for so many years it has been easier (and cheaper) to get in the habit of keeping multiple sizes of clothing on hand, in order to accommodate the yo-yo dieting. Thanks for trying to help me accept that things are different this time; I am finally feeling confident about that new reality. It helps to hear about how other bandsters have managed this aspect of their weight loss journeys!

    Nsv

Congratulations that is outstanding! These are the best kind of victories (not that the scale one aren’t great too) but the clothes indicators really drive home the success story. My biggest NSV will be when I don’t have to go the Big Man store and can shop in regular stores. Keep up the great work.
  13. Check the Carbs in your Protein shake, I use Whey Isolate because its lower in Carbs. Also 1 cup of applesauce has 43 Carbs so you might find a different snack that works better with your Diet Macros. What types of drinks do you have during the day? The Ketogenic Lifestyle is what I have been doing for the last 3 months and by keeping my Carbs at or Below 20 I have been Blessed to have good loses. The final piece is you might be having several NSV Non Scale Victories as your body is making the transition to fat Burning and Muscle building. Good Luck and we look forward to watching you make the transition.

NSV!! I fit in the chair!

Are you sure she was being mean, or might she have been subtily telling you that you could now clearly fit in any chair? If she was being mean WHAT A WITCH and congrats for defeating the witchiness. Either way, Woohoo on your NSV! I keep waiting for my boss to realize that I don't switch out the chairs in his office any more. I used to always pull up a wider chair when I was sitting across from his desk, but now the ones that have the skinny arms are just fine. Feels so good. I'm flying this weekend and hope I have as good of an experience.

    NSV!

I'm heading to Disney in April and can't wait to fit on the rides without panicking if I'll fit or not. Congrats on your NSV! Awesome job!

    MAJOR nsv's!

Mary - you my friend have accomplished what so many of us really need to do, focus on our health and not our weight. This is a major NSV. Congratulations!

    Subtle, but telling, NSV

Alexandra~ Congrats on the good attitude you have about your BP....Keep up the good work and maybe it'll go lower with less or no meds! What is an NSV?????? I am new to this. God Bless, Melody Banded 3/20/06 -29lbs

    Subtle, but telling, NSV

NSV means "non-scale victory" -- the triumphs we experience that have nothing to do with the specific number on the scale. Welcome, btw, and congratulations on your banding!!
  19. I began my weight loss surgery journey with very nebulous goals. Happiness wasn’t one of them. I knew I was miserable and frustrated and unhealthy, and mainly wanted to neutralize all that so that my future would be not-unhappy. As far as I was concerned, the words “happy” and “weight” didn’t even belong in the same sentence. In his book, Ultimate Lap-Band® Success, bariatric surgeon Duc Vuong (who is insightful about obesity despite being naturally as slender as a blade of grass) talks about identifying a "happy weight" versus a "goal weight". He says your happy weight is the weight at which you are no longer struggling with your relationship with food. You feel good, look good, are confident & active. Me? I have a happy weight, but it keeps changing. When I got to within 20 pounds of my goal weight (which I had casually grabbed off the high end of the BMI chart for a woman of my height), I thought that if I never lost another pound, I'd still be happy and consider my surgery a complete success. I did indeed feel better, look better, was more confident and far more active then than I ever would have dreamed, so I suppose you could say that my Happy Weight was 152 pounds. A few months later, I reached my goal weight, which was most certainly a very happy place. So I suppose you could say that my Happy Weight was actually 132 pounds, not 152. The problem is that my Happy Weight keeps changing. When I regained 20 pounds after a complete unfill to treat a band slip, the 152 pounds that had pleased me earlier was not a happy weight any more. My skinny wardrobe was too tight, my fat clothes were long gone, I tired more easily, my cholesterol went up, and I avoided looking at myself in the mirror. I wasn’t as miserable as I was at 221 pounds, but I wasn’t happy either. I knew I’d get back down to the 132 pounds again (and I did), but in the meantime….I was not happy! What about you? Do you know your happy weight? How do you even define it? Choosing a weight goal, whether measured by your BMI (Body Mass Index), a certain clothing size, reduction or elimination of a medication or the need for a CPAP machine, is fairly concrete. But how do you know what will make you happy? How do you measure happiness? I hate to tell you this, but achieving a certain weight goal won’t necessarily flip the Happy Switch in your brain. It’s quite possible that your happy switch will get turned on well before you reach the end goal, and also that achieving that goal may not yield the results you expected. If you believe (or at least hope) that being a certain body weight will make your partner fall in love with you all over again, things will get messy when you both discover that your slim new shape makes your partner insanely jealous every time someone else gives you an admiring glance. If you believe that a certain body weight will get you the job promotion you long for, and you get laid off instead, what becomes of your happiness? So my advice to you is this: keep your mind and heart open to the kind of happiness that takes you by surprise, and remember that many small NSV’s (non-scale victories) can add up to a huge improvement in your quality of life. There’s one aspect of Dr. Vuong’s definition of a happy weight that illustrates something that’s difficult for him (or any other never-obese person) to understand. That’s the part about your happy weight being the weight at which you are no longer struggling with your relationship with food. Bariatric surgery affects our brain and body chemistry to different degrees depending on the procedure, but it doesn’t cure obesity and it doesn’t forever vanquish our eating demons. That’s why weight regain in bariatric surgery patients is so common, and that’s why I highly recommend counseling, both pre- and post-op, to help us gain the insight and tools to conquer or at least tame those eating demons. Your bariatric surgeon should be able to give you a referral to a therapist who’s experienced with bariatric and/or eating disorder patients. Seeking counseling doesn’t mean you’re crazy – it just means that you recognize that you need help and are willing to give therapy a try.

    Do You Need Accountability?

Jean, THIS IS AWESOME! THANK YOU for posting this. There is NO way we can do this alone. At my church (don't be scared) we have accountability partners for our daily lives (we call them "running partners") and we do the same thing. We were not meant to do this journey alone and we need to be encouraging each other and cheering each other on! No one understands us like other people who have been banded. While I love this online forum, I do wish I could meet people face to face. I was banded on 4/23/12 and I'll be attending my first support group my surgeon's office offers next week. I am very excited. I had my first post-op appointment with my doctor yesterday and I swear I talked his ear off trying to get everything out. Poor guy. I had an awesome NSV this morning and no one to tell it to! I was sort of bummed. I have officially grown out of my first piece of clothing! YAY! Thanks again for posting.

    NSV for Me!

Ok...today I realized that I have lost the same amount of weight as my 10 year old son weighs. Now, I can't even pick him up because he is heavy. So to know that I have lost in weight what a 10 year old boy weighs is mind boggling. By the time that I lose all my weight...I will have lost a whole person. Can't seem to grasp my mind around it. Yikes! cindy

    What a day!

I'm really pleased for you. It's great when the numbers show success, as well as the NSVs. Good luck to you.

    What a day!

I am so happy right now! I was down another 1.5 pounds today and when I plugged it into my spreadsheet I saw some things that just made me stop and take a moment to process. Total loss: 42.6 Total percent lost: 15% Total remaining: 30% I have lost 1/3 of the weight I want to lose in 5 1/2 months! That potentially means that in a year from now I could be at goal if I keep losing at the same rate!!!! The best one of all... my BMI is now at 36.8 (down from 43.3) Some NSVs for today as well... I'm wearing my size 20 jeans again (even though they are completely out of style) I'm wearing a size XL sweatshirt that is not a MANS XL! I'm just taking a moment to savor the unexpected side effects of this journey. What a day!
  24. 28 year old dude here, HW 347 CW 323 GW 200. I get sleeved in 16 days, and I'm on day 6 of 21 days preop liquid diet. Looking for some inspiration, stories, NSV's, pictures! Anything to keep on my cell phone when cravings arise. I appreciate it! Looking forward to wrestling my life back in order and getting over these food addictions and demons!

6 weeks post op weight loss

Cindy, Watch the trend. A few ounces per week is okay as long as the general trend is down. Watch ALSO for the non-scale victories. e.g. I lost only 400g (13.5 ounces) this week (Week 10) but, THANKS TO TWO HOURS EXERCISE PER DAY, my waist fell from 142cm to 138cm. (56 inches to 54 inches.) I also had to move my car seat another notch closer to the steering wheel. My body fat dropped 1.3%. Non-scale victories (NSVs) are the positive changes that do NOT show on the scales. WELCOME THEM!
