  1. Hi, have you had your MGB done yet? I’m booked in for 8th June with Dr Chris in Belgium, and as you can tell with me being up, looking at forums at 1am, i’m a little nervous! I had a gastric band with Dr Chris about 10 years ago and lost about 4 and a half stone, then developed terrible gastric reflux, i had to have my band emptied and have gained all my weight back, and an extra stone. I feel horrendous. I’m having a band to MGB conversion. i think i’m more worried that i’ll be travelling with all the extra covid restrictions. And because of that i’ll be going alone.
  2. I probably ate that little only for the first two or three months. After that it was around 800 cal/day for a few months - and then I was up to around 1000 calories at around 10 months out. I didn't consistently go over 1000 until about the year mark, but WAS consistently over it the second year. Maybe 1000-1200 calories a day. I finally stopped losing weight at 20 months out and gradually increased my calories until I found my sweet spot. I gained 10 lbs in year 3 (which is very common - and frankly, I needed to - I'd gotten too thin), and then another 10 during the past year (thanks, COVID), which I would like to lose again. I can maintain if I stay in the 1500-1700 range (that's going to vary for everyone depending on a number of factors). I never reverted to eating junk. I almost always eat healthy foods - protein, fruit, vegetables, complex carbs (like whole grains). It's not that I NEVER it junk, but on a regular basis or every day, no. And I have to really monitor what I eat because if I go over my safe range too many times in a week, my weight will start heading north. Like Creekimp, if I have a blow out day one day, I'll cut back for a couple of days so that my week will average out. your sleeve should still work. to lose the weight again, you'll have to ditch the junk and start eating like we were supposed to be eating again - protein first, then veggies. Small servings of fruit or whole grains are also OK. Figure out how many calories you're eating now by tracking for a few days. Then gradually cut back until you get to a range where you're losing again (gradually cutting is easier for ME, anyway - drastic cuts like 500 calories cut at a pop are tough for me - maybe that's not true of everyone). Losing weight the second time around is much slower, but it CAN be done. and do find a therapist if you need help with your eating issues. Lots of us have used them and find they help.

    May Surgeries - check in!

Had my lap band removed after 10.5 yrs and had sleeve done on 5/10. I was definitely scared. Overall all went very well. I'm post op day 10 and I have to say the first couple of days I felt completely washed out. Between some muscle pain and over all fatigue. Tolerating liquids well, amazing how the hunger is not really there. The hardest part this far for me has been when my family cooks and eats. Just the smells make want a bite, but I know better. Hoping to be back to some sense of normalcy soon. Sent from my SM-G998U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. Skinnygirl fat-free, sugar-free salad dressing is amazing! I've tried the buttermilk ranch, roasted garlic vinaigrette, balsamic vinaigrette, honey dijon, and poppyseed, and I love them all. They all have 10-15 calories in a 2-tbsp serving. $1.98 at Walmart.

    Can't Maintain

I'll trade places with you lol. Because I've been stuck inside due to covid regulations in my state, I have been eating soooooo much more and some bad things. Im getting back on track but I gained 17 lbs in 10 months which may not seem like much but it is if we go through all of this. Ill gladly trade you places ☺️😜
  6. I had my surgery 14 years ago. About every 3-6 months I would get very bloated after eating and my mid left side would hurt. Hurt to breath. It would cause a referred pain in my left shoulder at the same time. now, 5-19-21, this has been happening everyday throughout the day. (Although I cannot tell if I’m bloated as I had Coolsculpt 8 months ago and have the rare side effect PAH. So I have a big brick of fat in the way.) For about the last 6 months. It’s gotten worse. Hard to breath, very painful . I’m developing new symptoms. I hiccup lightly quite often uncontrollably. If I bend over, I will burp a big swoosh of air that actually feels relieving, not like a belch. My drs have always tried to blame everything on my band but it’s always been fine. I am going to my Bariatrics dr tomorrow hopefully to get this situated. I’m going to ask if she thinks it’s my diaphragm, if I could have my port moved or shortened. I have never planned to get rid of my band. I have lost 75 lbs and am at a good weight

    May Surgeries - check in!

Well for the first couple months things are not normal but I am about 10 weeks out now and I can eat pretty much everything I did before surgery. I haven’t yet attempted steak, bread, rice or popcorn because they are on the list but other than that I can eat normal. I just feel like I eat my husbands plate instead of mine now. He is super thin and fit and I eat about the same as he does naturally.

    Scared I will fail

I agree with all the others. I wish I hadn't been so scared of the surgery and had it 10 or 20 years before I actually did. I felt like I was just existing rather than fully living for all those years. I would do this again in a heartbeat. In fact, I'd do it every year if I had to. There are a lot of food restrictions early out, but after that first year, no. I can eat most of the same things I did before, I just eat a lot less of them now. And we're not talking a couple of tablespoons (although that's the case the first month or so after surgery) - now I eat like a lot of my never-been-obese women friends do. For example, when I go out, I'll have an appetizer - or I'll order an entree and take half of it home. Honestly, a lot of never-been-fat people eat that way, especially women. Watch some of them sometime. you can always work with a therapist on your sugar addiction if you think that would help. A lot of WLS patients work with therapists on their food issues and have found it helpful. finally, I lost over 200 lbs and had a TON of loose skin. However, it was very easy to hide in clothes. No one knew it was there except for me (well, and my husband and doctor, of course). I've since had it removed, but here is a picture of me BEFORE I had plastic surgery. See the loose skin? Trust me, it's there. Especially my gut. Like someone else said, I would take the loose skin any day over weighing 373 lbs again. ANY DAY!! oh - and you're not too old at all for WLS. Lots of us have it in our 50s and 60s - and a few even in our 70s. I had it at 55. I'm probably 58 in this picture.
  9. Hi. In preparation for my puréed stage (surgery date was 5/10), during the purée stage does anyone know any restrictions on spices and seasoning? (It won’t be anything spicy, I don’t do that). What about Everything But the Bagel seasoning? Thank you

    Scared I will fail

Wow. You sound exactly like me. I was 48 when I this done last year. I also had a 9 year old son. He's 10 now and I'll be 50 in August. I'm still scared of failing. I have lost 148 and still have about 60 I would like to lose. My weight loss has slowed recently, and I'm afraid I won't get to my goal. I has all those feelings you had, and I still worry. However, I knew if I didn't do it, I'd stay the way I was for sure, and probably not live to see my son grow up. I'm SO glad I did the surgery. I was worried about missing food, but since you're not hungry at first, that makes it easier. And I do have cravings, but they're easier to control now. I just do my best to follow my plan and don't beat myself up if I do give into a craving, which isn't that often. Therapy is also something you might want to consider. That can help you work though issues with food. This is a big life change and I would be worried if you weren't scared. It's pretty normal to have those feelings! 11. I'm 4 weeks out and our family vacay is in 10 days. I was wondering if i can ride the rollercoasters rides/Get in the pool/ocean???
  12. Hello. I went through the entire process and had a surgery date in 2016. I got scared and backed out. Now I am older, heavier and have the same fears. I am 48, have diabetes and had a hysterectomy. I am scared that I will fail. I am scared I will not lose weight because of my age and the hysterectomy. Scared of my sugar cravings. I am scared because of the diet. If I can't eat the right foods now, how will I be able to do it after the surgery? I beat myself up everyday because I give in to my sweet tooth. It is truly a sugar addiction and I don't know how to beat it. I am sad thinking that I won't be able to really enjoy eating ever again. I keep thinking, if I put my body through this, only to gain the weight back in 5 yrs, then I have all of my old issues with weight plus the stomach restriction. Deep down, I feel that when I lose weight and start exercising I will be proud and determined to never go back to my old ways. But my fears and anxiety are working against me. I am scared of loose skin, particularly a sagging face. I have managed to maintain a youthful complexion with minor aging, and being overweight, that is the one thing I feel good about myself with. I know that I would rather be healthy for my 9 yr old son than looking older, but I do not want to look 10 yrs older either! I hope I am exaggerating the severity of it. I would love some advice and words of encouragement. Thank you for listening to me.

    Post op 3yrs HELP MEEEE

Thank you everyone! I think I’m worried and being harder on myself because I’m really NOT close to a normal BMI. I'm 5’4” lowest was 175 Maintenance was 185 so I had that 10 pound settling and was happy there. I was still able to enjoy my life and not obsess over my weight and food. currently I’m sitting between 204-208 and I’m not comfortable here. 😫 I’m very anxious to meet with my docs so I can see what they think I should do. I know you all feel my frustration! Thank you for responding and reassuring me! It goes further than you know.

    Any March Surgeries?

Honestly...I don't understand why there is no standardization with this surgery. Between calorie 'limits' to keto, some/no carbs, etc etc its really ridiculous. Not sure if this helps you: My surgery was March 29...so I just started my 8th week since surgery. My 'program' after surgery: 2 weeks of Full Fluids, 3rd week puree and soft foods and 4th week everything else. There are no calorie 'goals', as they want you to get as much nutrition as you can in..but they don't want you to be restricting food. My protein goal is 80 - 107g. During the full fluids phase I was getting about 550 calories a day. Puree I was getting about 900 calories. Regular foods until now are between 950 and 1100 ish depending what I am eating. I walk everyday (weather permitting) about 25 min. I'd like to get to the gym, but those are closed currently here. My weigh ins are: Surgery Day March 29: 315.6 April 5: 308.8 (-6.8) April 12: 302.6 (-6.2) April 19: 301.8 (-0.8) April 26: 299.2 (-2.6) May 3: 296.6 (-2.6) May 10: 294.0 (-2.6) May 17: 290.8 (-3.2) Total since surgery: 24.8 lbs
  17. This was one of my big fears, too, that deterred me from getting WLS sooner. I had read a lot of people's personal WLS experiences, and many of them seemed to talk about their pouch ruling their lives, and stuff about how they never know how their pouch will like something they ate, etc. I really hate vomiting and I was afraid that if I had WLS, it would happen all the time. I am 10 months out and I haven't vomited a single time since surgery. There were a few close calls (early on, it's not uncommon for a bite of a dense/dry food like meat to get sort of stuck on the way down, which is very uncomfortable and can result in nausea, but in my case every time this happened, it worked its way down eventually). I have been extremely careful about what I eat, so I'm not even sure if I get dumping syndrome. My surgeon said I should make sure not to exceed 15 grams of sugar or 15 grams of fat in one meal to avoid dumping. I've stuck with that and haven't had any issues. I actually see it as a benefit of the surgery that fear of dumping keeps me in line. There have been some occasions where I ate a few bites more than I should have, but I didn't vomit -- just felt kind of stuffed for a while. Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing how your individual body will respond to the surgery, but there's a good chance that if you stick to your plan, you won't have to worry about vomiting.

    Post op 3yrs HELP MEEEE

for some reason I didn't think of this before, but a 10-20 lb rebound gain after hitting your lowest weight is EXTREMELY common. It usually happens during year 3. Surgeons know this -- so they're almost certainly not going to get on your case!! This is probably what's going on. And what I said above is still true. It's ridiculously tough to lose 20 lbs when you're at - or slightly above - a normal BMI. Even for people who've never been overweight!
  19. Struggling a bit

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

I had bypass on 4/15. I was 280 and lost 10 during the 5 days pre-op. After getting home from surgery I couldn’t stomach anything except water so by the 27th I had lost 31. Since the 27th I have only lost 9 more pounds. I was stuck for almost two weeks. I feel your pain!

    Cocktails

I haven’t had any alcohol since surgery but I know what I will probably have. I liked Bacardi and Coke so that’s a no go but I had some drink packets I found on Amazon that are margaritaville flavors that will mix well and are only 10 calories a packet. Its a variety pack with pina colada, margarita and strawberry daiquiri. Easy enough to toss in your purse to mix up while on the go if you wanted.

  22. I have an appointment with a bariatric surgeon/general surgeon June 17. I had sleeve surgery 6/2010. Maintained at or below goal for six years. Slowly I regained 38 lbs, but worse than that, the GERD. I had a endoscopy done Nov 2019, I have a hiatal hernia that he says will come back so he will not do surgery. He put me on a prescription med and that's it. Worked for two months perfectly, I'd been eating 8 - 12 Tums per day and went to zero. I started needing an occasional Tum so he upped the med to twice a day. For the past couple of months I am needing a Tums more and more, weekly, although maybe two or three in one day, once or twice a week. He failed to mention there was an ulcer and stricture. I am a bit worried. I know how dangerous an ulcer can be. I am preparing myself for RNY, is that the ONLY way to fix all of this? Would the GERD stop and could I/would I lose 25-40 lbs that I've regained? I messed up when we left Dallas, I had been going to a couple of support group meetings twice a month, I was logging my food, we moved and I stopped. What is your opinion? Do I ask about it, for it or just prepare myself for the possibility? Thank you!

My heart goes out to everyone who has to travel for surgery. I just got lucky and have a bariatric hospital less than 10 minutes from my house. You should feel proud of going through all that travel entails when you’re recovering. I’m very impressed. I hope your dog is okay as well.

VERY SLOW WEIGHT LOSS PLEASE HELP

re: 5 lbs a week - that's pretty common for month #1, but beyond the first month, no. I know people on shows like "My 600 lb Life" lose can lose a ton of weight really quickly, but they start out at much higher BMI's than the average WLS patient. It seems like most of us lose in the 15-25 lb range the first month, and then maybe 10-12 (maybe 15 for some) lbs for a few months - then it drops again...and then drops again....until it finally stops. So at 2 lbs a week at seven weeks out, you're a little under that, but not by much. If you're following your clinic's plan (and it sounds like you are), that's about the only thing you have control over (other than activity level - which you also have control over). The other things that affect your rate of weight loss (age, gender, genetics, metabolic rate, starting BMI, your body composition (people with muscular bodies burn more calories)) you really don't have much - if any - control over. So do what you can - i.e, follow your plan and try to be active. As long as you're trending downward, you're good. you're also not starting at as high a BMI as some of us. I started out at 373 lbs. I lost 16 lbs the first month, then 10-12 lbs a month until month 6 or 7, then 5-8 lbs a month until I got to about the year mark, then it dropped again. By the end, I was eking out maybe 2 lbs a month. here's the difference I found (surgery vs. no surgery). My rate of weight loss was about the same. The difference was, before surgery, I'd drop about 50 lbs (and that was on my more successful attempts - most of the time it was only 20 lbs), then I'd hit a brick wall, and then my weight gradually went back up 'til I was back at square one. If not higher. That didn't happen this time. I kept going. And I didn't put it back on.
