I ate refried Beans on my soft food days. I would drink mainly Protein shakes and just the 1-2 oz of refried beans each day. I waited until after the puree foods stage to eat the more actual chewing required foods. My puree stage was only about a week or two. My center suggested yogurt as well, but I didn't like it too much since most of it has a bunch of carbs. Here's a list my doc/nut give to patients. Strained Soups broth and lowfat cream based soups (try stirring jar baby food meats into your Soup to increase protein) Lite-low fat strained yogurt of plain greek yogurt protein fortified strained hot cerials like cream of wheat or cream of rice low fat 1% cottage cheese or ricotta cheese protein fortified cooked and mashed or pureed potatoes and non gas-forming veggies like carrots, squash, green beans, or peas. mashed black, pinto or navy beans lowfat, fat free or vegetarian refried beans or hummus protein fortified sugar free and low fat or fat free pudding **They say to fortify these foods with protein try adding unflavored Protein powder OR add 2 tbsp of non-fat dry milk (the milk adds about 5 g of protein)

Threetimesacharm replied to indian's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you a vegetarian? This may be a culprit due to the high carb intake you would have. -
You definitely want vegetarian. They do not have lard. my nutritionist said NO LARD. Lol. Trader Joes has all types of beans and you can make your own.

OK Mid-August sleevers, what are ya'll eating now???
minniekitty replied to blackmikeg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'll have to try that. It would be nice to eat a "normal meal" again. It still amazes me at how little I can eat to feel satisfied, compared to what I used to eat. I am eating some stir-fried tofu right now. It's pretty tasty with all of the seasonings. Normally I wouldn't touch tofu, but it makes a nice meal. I've basically been a vegetarian since surgery! -
Why different post op diet requirements?
BLERDgirl replied to Annie77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@ - I was just wondering because I'm a vegetarian AND I'm allergic to seafood. I wouldn't have been able to eat that tuna fish @@lovemychihuahua - no yogurt? That's crazy! I must get half my Protein from greek yogurt. This is why I had to ask at the seminar if they had problems with vegetarians. I would never have survived either of these programs. -
Hello fellow slow loosers I need some input guys..... for the last 4 mos I have lost no more than 3lbs per month (the last 2 mos its only been 2). I just got on the scale for my midmonth weigh and I have gained a lb. Now... I'm trying not to panic.... in the past this might have sent me over the edge. I was 7lbs from goal.... now I'm 8. I have to say... I am not much of a meat eater.... was pretty close to vegetarian before surgery. I decided to get back on the meat after surgery because lean Protein and veggies seems to really take the weight off. If I eat another meal of meat and veggies I may PUKE!!!! I'm sooooo over it. he thought of it literally makes me gag a little. Consequently I have added whole grains into my diet. I eat alot of legumes and such. Actually.... just this week I started eating bread!!!! (I'm sure that explains the lb) What do you guys think about the idea of going on a DIET. I lost 50 lbs with weight watchers one time and I know the program well. It would allow me to eat more grains and yes.... even a little bread.... while keeping my calories under control. Its only 8 lbs..... I may be able to do it in 8-10 weeks. I would still drink the protein... just count it in my daily pts. before surgery I was a bit of a compulsive dieter... the diet binge cycle. I certainly don't want to go back to that... but mybe if its not too restrictive and I have realistic goals. I would love to have some input thanks stacey

I cook every day. It's comforting and enjoyable and stress relief for me. For me, it's been really fun to come up with great things to eat for fast day that my husband will eat with me. You know, without breaking the calorie bank on them, or having to skip half the meal! I love chicken but really, chicken breasts can only take me so far. I get sick of the same things over and over again. So, yes, the chorizo is a spicy sausage. I get the freshly made stuff at Whole Foods. I enjoy it once in a while but well, many people don't. I also enjoy chopped liver, remember? I have a wide variety of tastes. Minestrone soup - from a modified recipe I found on allrecipes: 3 links of sweet Italian turkey sausage (casings removed) - optional, I make it vegetarian sometimes 2 Tbs. olive oil 4 cloves chopped or minced garlic (adjust to your taste) 1 large onion, chopped 4 stalks celery, chopped 5 carrots, chopped 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth 2 cups Water 1 (28 oz) can Tomato sauce 1/2 cup red wine - optional 1 can kidney Beans, drained 1 can green beans, drained 1 cup baby spinach, rinsed 1 large or 2 small zucchinis, quartered and sliced 1 Tbs. fresh oregano, chopped 2 Tbs. fresh basil, chopped Salt and pepper, to taste 1/2 cup seashell or mini farfalle Pasta Grated Parmesan or romano for garnish Heat oil in a stock pot over medium heat and cook turkey sausage (if using) until no longer pink. Break into small chunks. Without draining (there should not be much excess oil), add garlic and onion to the pan and saute for five minutes. Then add the celery and carrot and cook an additional 2 or 3 minutes. Add the stock, water and tomato sauce. Bring the mixture to a boil, then add in the wine. Reduce the heat to low and add in the kidney beans, green beans, spinach, zucchini and spices. Go easy on the salt until the mixture has time to blend well and you can be sure it's needed. Simmer for an hour. While soup is simmering, boil pasta according to package instructions. When soup is ready, do the final seasoning, stir in pasta and garnish with cheese to serve. Soup is always best after it's had time to cool completely and is reheated. Also, you might find that your vegetables absorb a lot of your water if this sits in the fridge for a few days; just add a little more water when reheating and it will be fine! Makes a ton of soup and will feed you for several days.

Hi everyone! Ok, I have a problem and I wanted to see what you guys thought. I got banded at the end of Sept 06, starting at 252 lbs. It is now the end of Oct 07 and I have only lost 55 lbs. I got my first fill in Nov of 06. I was so busy between school, work, and moving that I got my second fill in the end of Aug, just a few months ago. Since then, I have lost only 2 lbs. I'm so discouraged. I know I should have gotten my fills when I plateaued (um, I don't know, like a year ago!) but I was so busy. I only stay full for about 3 hours. I was a vegetarian for 5 years, and I know protein is a huge factor in losing weight. I just started eating lean cuts of chicken and turkey to help me but nothing is working. I work out for at least an hour each day, I stick to my diet and nothing helps. I feel like I wasted my first (and most important year). I guess my question is- should I get another fill? My band is at 2cc's. What do you think? Thank you, -Royce

Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
Creekimp13 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yep, I eat them all. Love them. They're a daily part of my diet. Sometimes multiple times a day. OMG, they're carbs! Yep, they are. But they're not refined, over-processed, or bad. And you know what else they are? Excellent sources of plant based protein and fiber. A baked potato has 160 calories. By itself, it has 4g of protein. Throw some vegetarian chili on there and you're in the high teens. Awesome lunch! Brown rice...half a cup has around 100 calories and 3g of protein. Add some bean or peas and you've got complete amino acids...tons of protein... and a crazy awesome amount of fiber. Why is dietary fiber important? To grow good gut bugs. Your microbiota and the health of your gut (and metabolism) depend on happy little bacteria. The strains of gut bugs that live in the guts of skinny people....have a favorite food: dietary fiber. Feed your good bugs good things and they'll be good to you. They like to eat fruit, veggies, beans, whole wheat bread... Whole wheat bread? I eat this A LOT:) For instance.....A lite Thomas English wheat muffin has 5g of protein for 100 calories. This dietary powerhouse has 8g of dietary fiber! Smear that sucker with your favorite nut butter or fruit preserves, and you're in business. One of my favorite go-to dinners these days...... is fresh homemade wheat bread with 16 veggie soup...and fruit for dessert. I eat about four servings of fruit a day...and that's not even counting the watermelon I huddle over in the car while hissing "My Precious...." LOL:) A banana is not "a candy bar" A banana is a wonderful healthy food. I eat lots of them. Hell, I have a Yonanas that makes them into ice cream. They're terrific. Normal weight does not HAVE to mean giving up carbs. It means being carb smart, balancing, and making mindful choices. More than one way to do this whole thing. Weight loss success does not mean ONLY eating meat for the rest of your life with broccoli on the side. That's great once in a while, though! Not trying to tell anyone they're doing it wrong.....just sayin'....there's more than one way to do it right:) Extreme thinking, extreme dieting, extreme self denial....is not sustainable. Work on a forever diet you can live with. Be mindful, be accountable....but be kind to yourself. -

ricotta cheese with some tomato sauce, grated cheese, and mushed up vegetarian "meat" balls (miniscule amounts of everything of course)! and refried beans with cheese. And pureed vegan bean soup. I forget which one I had first, but those were all within the first few days!

Can someone explain why eating and drinking at the same time is forbidden?
TES replied to jacee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you eat meat (I don't), I have heard lots of people say that they like the Wendy's chili while on the road. You could blenderize it or just be sure to chew it really, really well and eat slowly. You could also do mashed potatoes, but you are better off focusing on protein. Soups are great during the puree phase. I am a vegetarian and I really like the Morningstar protein products--the vegetarian meatballs and vegetarian breakfast "sausage" especially. Those early post-op seem to find that they set better than animal protein and they are easy to heat up if you are going to have a fridge and microwave. I like to heat the protein "meat"balls with a little ricotta and marinara plus some parm and/or mozz cheese (just a bit for a protein and flavor boost). Also, Greek yogurt is a great source of protein during the puree stage. You can add half a scoop of protein powder to boost the protein. Laughing Cow soft cheese wedges are a lifesaver too. You can also do refried beans topped with some cheese. Even Taco Bell has them if you need to do fast food while traveling. Good luck and have a good vacation! -
Bariatric surgery and keto?
Arabesque replied to deardarkling's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Always a good idea to get feedback from others. I was put on keto for the 2.5 weeks before surgery but that was all I did. Some will likely swear by it but personally I wouldn’t go back to it. Good to kick start a diet but not long term. Your surgery is the best kickstart you’ll ever find. The high fat intake on keto is the real issue for me. I’ve never enjoyed high fat foods & now I don’t have a gall bladder to help process all that fat. You may find your cholesterol temporarily increases while you are losing (it’s released from your fat). I believe it’s one of the reasons most surgeons & dieticians recommend low fat while you’re losing so you’re not adding to the risk. Losing large amounts of weight & high cholesterol levels also put you had a higher risk of developing gall stones. It’s why many of us end up having issues & have our galls removed post weight loss surgery. I’ve read keto can also screw with your blood sugar levels so if you have issues with diabetes it may not be your best option. Usually best to stick to your surgeon’s plan & dietician’s recommendations while you are losing. Slowing adding in new foods as you go. You’ll lose doing that & you will go into ketosis as well - bad breath & a smelly body awaits you 😉. You may find you end up developing your own eating plan which works for you & which incorporates aspects of many eating styles once you’re close to or in maintenance: keto, vegan, vegetarian, Atkins, intermittent fasting, etc. Whatever way you go it has to be sustainable & complement how to want to live your life. Good luck whatever you choose to do. -

There has got to be a better way
swimmom replied to tomato pie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a vegetarian, and I love to do lentils (cheap and high in protein) - I have found several great recipes using lentils in chilis and soups. Eggs are also good. My favorite protein drinks are the American Bariatrics fruit drinks (taste like Crystal Light or Koolaid) and the AB cappuccinos (which I mix with my coffee). Another favorite powerful protein combo is a vanilla Greek Yogurt mixed with some PB2 - Peanut Butter Powder. Delicious and high in protein! -
Hi all! I have been banded for 2 years but due to several surgeries and medical complications have not been able to be filled or really lose weight . So now I **finally** got my fill and am feeling pretty good with a good amount of restriction. However, I am a vegetarian and am having problems finding ways to get enough Protein in without heavy loading on the cheese. I love cheese, which is what I always relied on for protein and is a huge reason that I needed the band in the first place! I have been eating yogurt and baked Beans for protein but wanted some other ideas. :help: I hate the Protein shakes and they make me start to gag so please don't tell me that those are my only option! Thanks!

Post op help needed - hunger
slimgal2015 replied to bobbyswife's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on dec 22nd, i am just past 2 weeks and i am experiencing hunger too! I am already on omreprazole once a day........not sure how to differentiate head hunger vs. real hunger :-(, so when i feel hunge I sip decaf iced tea...... So please dont worry, seems to be happening to a lot of people I am able to eat 4 oz pureed food at one sitting. Is that normal or too much? And when we say contain carbs to less than 30g that includes evrything from milk, yoghurt and beans? I am a vegetarian so not sure how to really control carbs under 30 gms!! -
Thanks everyone for replying with helpful suggestions and commiserations. one thing i think i should address is that quite a few of the people that replied seemed to be worried about me. Worried that I am sabotaging myself. On the one hand, maybe I gave the impression that I am sitting around gorging myself, but I am not. It took a couple of days for me and my roommate to finish off one pizza. And it was thin crust and vegetarian. So it was not the worst food in the world. And the sugar cookie dough was delicious, so I won't appologize for it. Everyone has to make their own decisions on how they will lose weight. Some people make the choice to stick to a diet completely and consider SF pudding a splurge. That is awesome for them, and they will probably lose weight quicker than me. Some people work out like crazy, and that is awesome too, and they will probably lose weight quicker than me, too. I have a different approach. I am not trying to go on a diet. I am trying to eat healthy, but like a normal person healthy. If I want to eat chocolate or pizza or ice cream, I will. Just like a normal person. The difference is that with the band, I can eat 1 or maybe 2 slices of pizza instead of 4. I can be perfectly satisfied with a 1/2 cup of ice cream instead of a whole bowl. I don't just eat bad foods, but I'm not going to banish them. This does not make me a bad bandster, and you don't have to worry about me. Notice that I HAVE lost 24 lbs in 6 weeks, so it seems to be working.

Any Vegetarians With A Band? Vegans?
sheepieluvr replied to Sannah's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This has been a major concern for me. I have not gotten the surgery yet and just met with the dietitian for the first time. She rolled her eyes when I said I was a vegetarian (lacto/ovo) and told me it was going to be difficult to get 75 grams of protein per day when I'm down to 4 oz meals. Very discouraging. I left feeling very stressed and concerned that I won't be able to succeed. I can use all of the support out there right now. Struggling to lose the 12 pounds needed for the surgery - when I am stressed, I eat (duh!). -
I have my surgery next week! (Nhs ,uk)
Doris27 replied to Star1234's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey there, congratulations on your surgery date, it’s probably been quite a wait. My sleeve surgery was done 2wks ago privately in the U.K., my surgeon also works in the NHS so I presume the post op diet he uses is the same or similar for both sets of patients. within 3hrs of surgery I was sipping water, and throughout the following day I had half a milk shake, 4 spoons on soup, 2 spoons of jelly and another half milk shake. For 6 days post op I pretty much consumed protein milk shakes, protein yogurts & puddings, also Frubes, which were easy to eat, laughing cow/dairylea triangles, thin soups and cups of tea and water. At 2wks post op, I’m eating the above, but also mashed lentils (the pouches of ready made ones for ease.) liquidised bean/lentil/pea soups and hummus. All washed down with 2l of fluid per day. Trial and error over the past 2wks have taught me I need to eat small and often, as I’m rarely hungry it’s easy to forget to eat, but this is a mistake as then I do get hungry, eat too quickly, eat to much and feel rubbish. Really rubbish. I’ve found it really useful to make up little 50g pots of food, so I have a ready supply of yoghurt/protein pudding/lentils/mashed egg/lentils/hummus to grab and go. I eat 5 or 6 of these pots per day. Yesterday I had 200g of liquidised bean soup at one sitting, which was lovely and filling. my nutritionist said let your body guide you, so if you are starving at the liquid stage you may be ready for the soft diet/puree stage. At this stage she advised you can eat anything which is of a paste consistency as you swallow it. So bread sticks or Melba toast which melt and break down might be easier to eat than say a berry. I chew everything at least 20 times, so anything which arrives in my stomach is basically mush. I am a vegetarian but I read on here other people eat tuna and salmon at this stage, Hope this helps. Good luck for a straightforward procedure and steady recovery. You can do this 💪 -
We do eat meat but we use the Veggie products from Morningstar farms all the time. They have a new hot dog, the original grillers (like a burger) but lots of different varietys, They have chicken nuggets, links which are small sausage shaped, or the round sausage, or buffalo wings (not wings at all and the list goes on. My Mom turned me onto them she was a Vegetarian, and I just have loved those. When I don't know what to eat I generally go for a Griller w/some NF cottage cheese on top. They are usually my first go to Protein food. I also like black Beans as well that I will mix with some of this or cottage cheese, I am a mixer!!! We like Isopure for our Protein shake, hubby is NOT banded but follows we eat the same thing he finds he feels better following along with what works for me. If your in Southern California there is also a Market at the Loma Linda University that does not carry any meat products. You can actually buy items online and find nutritional information on the items. Just google LOMA LINDA FOODS but make sure you do read the ingrediants and they have pretty much substitutes for almost anything.

I'm a vegetarian: pre-op & post-op HELP!?
Brittanysiemens replied to Brittanysiemens's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I'm a pescatarian too, I just figured saying "vegetarian" was easy to understand for the sake of the question. Thanks for the juice + isopure idea, that will be quite helpful and nourishing! I have a box of myoplex EAS original for when I can do protein shakes, I do not have a juicer so I plan to just buy broth. -
Hi I have a so protiein fruit smoothie at Breakfast At lunch I have a salad and a Protein, I am not a complete vegetarian, I do eat fish and eggs At dinner same thing veg and protein
