  1. I was banded on 9/22 and will go for my first fill tomorrow (couldn't go last week - I was working) and since I haven't had any restriction and am hungry all the time - I haven't lost weight. My last visit and weight was coming off 4 weeks of liquid only diet. Now I've been on pretty much the 6 month pre-op diet (maybe less food) - protein, veggie, fruit. I have actually been losing weight for 3 years (2 years before I started this banding odessey) and am down about 60 pounds. I am happy with this. But my doctor said at the last visit that he wanted me to lose 10-15 lbs. in 3 weeks. I am about 185 lbs. Not only is 10-15 lbs. in 3 weeks unreasonable for any diet, but even more so for where I am weight wise and with no fill or restriction. I don't feel like I need to starve myself to reach some artificial goal. My surgeon is a regular surgeon who also does bariatric surgery and I was only his 23rd banding case. Anyone have this experience?
  2. I have decided in my workplace to tell people, they have been supportative to me and for me and never change a thing! We have monthly birthday celebrations which always has goodies but we are sure to add veggies (this is for all of us and gives up better options at the parties) and such since any given day there is people who would rather have or want that instead. I'm glad to have their support and love and know so many are there for me if needed and will undestand why i suddenly choose not to participate in the "food fest" ...mostly I am not hurting my good friends feelings by not trying their fab new dessert, because she understands. I don't want them to change...and so far they have not. I guess i'm happier knowing they know and understand. I know we all dont have that kind of support at work, but i'm happy with my decision.
  3. This is going to come off sounding super harsh, and probably isn't going to "sound" right, but it's really how I feel about these situations, even with family members. I do not think we should expect others to change their behaviors due to our decision to have weight loss surgery. Temptations are going to be everywhere, and we have to make the choice to not indulge. While it's nice in theory that those co-workers would be supportive and not tempt you, if it's something they love to do, I would not be comfortable asking them to change what they do to accommodate me or my eating behaviors. If you are close with the co-workers, and you know them way better than any of us do, then share with them that you are having WLS, and ask that they not tempt you by reminding you that those foods are there, or offering them to you directly. Pack your desk with more sleeve friendly options, be prepared for those times by having your own foods available to you. Some people will offer you food because they worry you aren't eating enough. They'll make remarks about you wasting away to "nothing", or that you're getting too skinny. It happens a lot and it causes some people a lot of emotional turmoil. I'm not opposed to sharing your choice to have surgery, but I would not feel it's fair to ask them to stop doing something they love because your choice.

I hate, hate, hate having depression:(

You aren't rambling so don't worry. I am glad you are going to see a Psychiatrist as a GP isn't equipped enough for all of the different med options out there. My sister found out in her mid-forties that she is Bi-Polar and she is doing well now on meds. Just know that you are never alone with this disease and don't ever feel or let anyone else make you feel inferior. Taking meds for mental illness is like taking meds for high blood pressure, it's to help a medical condition. Good luck to you
  5. What protein shakes/powders do you think taste the best?

I am 4 weeks post-op. I had my surgery at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Ne. My surgeon, Dr. R. Sudan, is reputed to be the best in town. Unfortunately, he is leaving Omaha this month and moving to Rahleigh, NC area. I have a very stubborn case of Fibromyalgia and have suffered with problem from it since 1994. However, my pain level is very manageable since my surgery. I went from 7-9 pain levels daily, to a 2-3 on most days. I am amazed - as are my family and friends. Several friends have commented that "Mary's back!" I am only weighing myself every Tuesday. My first goal is 30 pounds and I will get my ears double pierced! Last Tuesday (July 29) I had lost 24 pounds! I would like to get information from anyone who is or has knowledge of raw fruit/vegetable juicing, post-op. I was just reading about the benefits and learning from my niece how juicing could really change how I felt. She uses Protein powder in her juicing - so I thought it might work for me post-op, too. If anyone has that type of experience, please email me at: mary.jirsak@gmail.com. I have had no problems. Everyday I feel better and notice physical changes in my ability to tolerate different activities. My depression is improving, also. I am so elated and feel so good about having made the decision for a Lap-band procedure. I would be interested in other Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome individuals and their progress. I am glad I stumbled upon this website and look forward to reading and hearing from others. I am very inexperienced in blogs, chats, etc. So, please let me know if I make any mistakes! Nana Mary:thumbup:
  7. Well its been a little over 2 months and I'm down 34 lbs with about 36 to go. I had a fill at 4cc. For me I don't need another fill the restriction is there. I find that what I can eat 1 day may not go down the next. The slimming is not to good with the pain of food being stuck. I was on protein shakes when I lost the most weight. I went to a morning shake and 2 meals and didn't lose weight till I dropped a meal. For those with fills coming up be careful not to overfill or you will have problems. Good luck to all.

    What are You Eating?

Jacks is correct, you are officially in Bandster Hell (and it sucks!). You will likely not lose any weight until your first fill which is usually 6 weeks post op. The six weeks is for your body to heal and your stomach to figure out the the H*** you just did to it :mad2: Your body goes into a starvation mode as it doesn't know how to react to the massive changes going on. In fact (don't freak out) you could gain weight, which again is totally normal. You will be swollen for awhile and retain water, even though eating almost nothing but don't get discouraged. My best advice is to stay OFF the scale for at LEAST a month. Post op I ate cottage cheese and mashed potatoes for awhile but then needed protein so ate the canned corned beef hash (NOT a good choice, high in fat, but I needed it BAD)' Just keep exercising and doing what you're suppose to be doing, the weight will come off, but don't count on losing ANYTHING for at least a month.

    What are You Eating?

Hi I am also from NJ - Nice to meet you. I am about 2.5 weeks out of surgery and eating mushies still and some food but chewing everything until I can't chew it anymore just to be safe. i do not feel restriction either at this point. From what I understand this time is called bandster hell and is for healing rather then losing weight. I think you get a first fill 4 or 5 weeks out of surgery so I still have a while. The first week after surgery I lost about 14 pounds but nothing since and I understand this is normal to. Just hang in their until your first fill but continue to make good food choices. Protein shakes, puree food and any kind of healthy food you can keep chewing to a puree consistancy

Need Advise - I'm a bit too tight

Go for the unfill. For a few reasons; I assume you are flying to your seminar? Flying ALWAYS makes me extra tight for a few days. Stress makes me tighter also, and traveling can be stressful. If your doctor is pushy about you telling him what you'd like, ask to have a 'little bit' taken out, and let him decide how much that is. (as a side note, I think the idea that he'd give you that much when you only wanted a little is arrogant) I know you are happy to be losing, but even if you don't get tighter with the travel n' stuff, you'll get sick of being on liquids, and you will probably find yourself frustrated as heck to go to dinner with people from the seminar and not be able to eat. Even if soup is always an option, what if the 'soup' is chili? It's all chunky and stuff and there's not alot of liquid to satisfy you, you know? I've been too tight before. It's icky.

    Pre-op July 26 surgery.

I am on my second week of the 2 week diet. Actually tomorrow starts the second week. All I've been having is Protein shakes, and for dinner I have a piece of chicken with lettuce. My surgeon allows it. I'm now starting to have problems with having to run to the bathroom. Like omg I better run before I have an accident. Anyone else having this problem? Anyone else a July sleever?! Also.. Can I take anything to help me stop?

    Pre-op diet starts tomorrow

Make sure that you have protein shakes that you can drink and don't hate. They go a super long way to keep you from being hungry during that time. The hardest part for me, and really, it still is, is my mouth feels yucky from not eating. Have popsicles, they are very soothing! Broth tastes good when you aren't eating! The biggest thing I'd suggest though is that you focus on the goal. You fought so hard to get this revision, do not blow it by cheating on the diet! You dont want to give insurance any excuse to back out. My biggest fear was the surgeon would go in, my liver would be too big and he'd close me up without doing the bypass. It kept me honest lol. Good luck and if you are struggling, come on here and talk about it!
  13. http://caloriecount.about.com Is what I use. It's free and right now it helps me keeping track of Protein as I'm still eating mushies, so my food is very limited. You can tag items that you use frequently for easier access. It also has a recipe analyzer, you can put in the ingredients/quantities of a recipe and it will calculate the nutrition.
  14. Best of luck. If you have the option to avoid optifast go for it. I didn't have that option and am on Day 4 optifast. I will keeps you in my thoughts and prayers. If you don't mind me asking, who is your surgeon and what hospital? I am just down 95 from you in Stafford!
  15. My surgery was 2 1/2 yrs ago. I wished I had done alot more studying up and reading about the lapband before I had it. I wanted it - I got it. I even attended the 4 hr mandatory seminar my drs office had about a month before and I never remember them telling me to be so patient! I wish I had known back then that the first few months (or until you get proper restriction) were going to be so hard. I really thought I had failed yet again. I could eat just as much as I had before. I lost maybe 8 lbs during the first 5 mths. As soon as I got my 3rd fill, the weight started dropping off (about 10 lbs a month). Oh and I wish I had read my post op instructions a little better. I thought it said 4 weeks of Clear liquids + Protein shakes. I thought I was going to starve, so I added tomato Soup to my diet but thought I was cheating. Never told my doc. Just a few months ago, I found my post op instructions. They say liquids only for 4 weeks - including pudding, yogurt, cream Soups, etc. That whole time I thought I was gunna hurt myself with the tomato soup and felt guilty. And I could've had yogurt and pudding!!! Thats what I get for not reading carefully.... Good luck with your surgery! It was the best thing I ever did Marci

Week Four From The Loser's Bench

Today is Day 28 Post op. I pretty much feel back to normal. My energy has come back and I my incisions feel completely healed. I am supposed to be on clears still. I advanced my diet so I could make it through the long shifts at work. My nutritionist recommended this. I just started out with greek yogurt and refried beans. I also made an egg drop soup which was so delish. Good news!!! I finally found a protein shake I like, it's the Premier Protein Shake from Costco. Doesn't taste chalky to me at all. I have only tried the chocolate but will try vanilla next time I go. I am getting a little over 60gms of protein a day from the shakes and food. It is a huge relief since I was fearing dealing with a heart condition while being completely bald since I was having such a hard time getting shakes down. More good news, the scale finally moved. I am down to 225.8 which is a 24.2 lb loss since surgery. I haven't really been exercising since I had zero energy and had been sore. Now that I am feeling better I am going to look into getting a gym membership to hopefully get the weight loss going again. Overall, I feel more comfortable with my sleeved body. I do occasionally worry that any little twinge I feel near my stomach might be the start of a leak. I am not as apprehensive as I was initially though. I look in the mirror and see my face and body just can't believe how much it has changed at 24lbs. I can't even imagine what I will look like at 100 lbs down. I can't wait!
  17. Tonight at dinner I slimed for the first time.... I was eating pizza which I have had before and dont know if i didnt chew enough or ate too fast but it was not fun nor pretty.... Finally after much "sliming" and burping and damn near almost vomiting I felt better.... stopped immediately and waited 30 min and finished my needing to feel full with a Protein shake... All is now good in the hood again....

    no milk products

Oh I just realized that you just had the surgery. I was out of luck the first week of my surgery because the protein drinks were nasty and made me want to puke. I didn't get good protein until 2 weeks post op. Good Luck to you, this is a hard time but it will pass and you will have plenty of time to make up for all the protein that you missed.

I use whey protein in Van., orange (crystal lite type) mix, ice , water & litlle milk if you can. Blens and it's like an orange slush with what you need.
  20. Welcome! I know it's scary and yes it's a huge decision. It sounds like you have done a lot of work on yourself mentally and I think that's a major key to sucsess in this process. You are right, it's your decision who to tell and not tell about your surgery. I told one person, my mother, and that's it. If anyone asks how I am loosing the weight I just tell them I have committed to a high Protein, low carb lifestyle. When you come home after surgery you will be sore and on different stages of dietary restrictions....I don't see how you can keep that from your teenagers. I think they will notice, so in my opinion it might be a good idea to have a talk with them. You might be surprised at how happy they will be that you decided to become a fit, active and healthy mom. This was the best decision, my only regret is not having it done about 10 years ago. Keep coming to this forum, ask a lot of questions. You will do great!
  21. Everyone is singing the praises of Miralax... So I gave it a whirl. I took 1 dose last evening around 7pm. Nothing. Took another dose this morning around 6 AM... nothing. Took another with my Protein shake at 12 noon... nothing. How long does this stuff take ? It's been almost 4 full days since my last BM and I'm starting to get a bit antsy...
  22. just type in search mushies recipes or something like that. there are 100 other posts like this one further back in the reel of this forum my tips for mushies: get creative, make food fun, add in Protein powder when u can and incorporate stuff YOU LIKE. depriving urself of things u like will lead to failure later on because perfection is impossible to achieve.
  23. I love oatmeal for breakfast, It goes down good and its filling, just thin it out a little bit with more Water or milk. I love maple & brown sugar flavor or add a little brown sugar to plain. Or you could just have a Protein shake if that is your preference. lunch and dinner, I've been having a lot of Chili, egg salad, tuna/chicken salad, mashed potatoes, refried Beans, try bean Soup (like campbells bacon and bean), or any liquid soup. I prefer to not do soup because it doesn't have as much protein. I bought one of those stick blenders, they are like $30 http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-CSB-76BC-SmartStick-200-Watt-Immersion/dp/B000EGA6QI that is easiest, you can mix up Protein shakes or puree your food right in the pot or the glass. I haven't had to puree, my purees.. I just make sure it's really soft food, no hard chunks and it goes down fine.
  24. Congrats on your 25 lb loss, muelle! Sounds like your fill went well... my first is a week from tomorrow (1/5) and I too am a lil nervous! They have already told me I would not have to go back to liquid or puree for any length of time after the fill. My restriction now is much less than at the beginning (since the swelling has obviously gone down) but I still feel some if I eat my protein and eat slowly Good luck to everyone with their first fills!!!
  25. I'm getting ready to go out for the night -- my friend is having a fashion show tonight so I want to look extra good! For the first time in I don't know how long, I liked the first outfit I tried on (unlike trying on 10 different options and finally giving up). Looking in the mirror I thought to myself, I actually look pretty good! Guess that's what 46.5 pounds and a better attitude about myself with do! Now off to enjoy the night!!
