Newbie concern
IncredibleShrinkingMan replied to gunit1979's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Take those multivitamins...religiously. That is the most powerful defense against both minor stuff (hair loss, broken nails) as well as against serious threats to our immune system, etc...We do not become immune to any non-weight related illness, but following the directions keeps us on par. -
Though all turned out ok in the end, I had issues with UHC. Evidently from the time I started my WLS journey till I was sent for approval, they had changed my particular policy group to require the 6 months of supervised weight loss attempts. All fine and good for me, since I had it anyway, but the best explanation that could be communicated was to the effect that the policy change went into effect, but the proverbial "no one" had put it in the patient or doctor's manuals yet (?) My advice to anyone because of this is to be very very sure of what your insurance requires, and periodically check for updates by calling them. I asked 4 times throughout this process to make sure I was doing everything correctly, and was assured up till less than a month before my surgery that all was fine, when boom! It could have really fouled things up.

I don't want to appear desperate but.....

Hey girlie, I'm sorry for being a ginormous tool. In the end, the only opinion that counts is your own. You DO know best where you are in this continuum. You know? And loneliness and loss SUCK the big one! I guess I just answered from my own personal experience before Mr. F. came into my life. And like in AA and similar programs, the kinda forbid you to make major life changing decisions or get into a relationship while you are walking your steps--because of transference. And knowing how I will escape processing tough things by "getting busy" with other things...well, your post was a perfect storm just waiting for me to pontificate. Of course, I am also in Day 4 of the Liquid Diet so there is a good deal of the bat **** crazies going down round these parts. Not to mention a big serving of Hanger. LOL. 2 -

In a little pain
PorkChopExpress replied to gombo22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, nine days may be just a hair premature for your healing rate...listen to your body. Not everybody heals at the same speed. Have you been meeting your Protein goals? If not, that would contribute to slower healing of the wound on the stomach, and cause it to ache/hurt more when you fill it. So I think I might just cool it on the solids for 3-4 more days and then try again. I'm 14 days post-op myself and I'm tolerating mushy foods pretty well now, I can eat 1/4 cup at meals with no real ill effects (except that the sensation of fullness comes on faster and is harder for me to feel coming, still). Also, when you try again, make sure you are chewing it until it's basically almost a liquid in your mouth before you swallow it. Will make it MUCH easier on your stomach, to work on it. -
That's happened to me with every weight loss campaign ever (and likely will with this one). For me it makes sense...any kind of weight loss requires me to pay attention/be conscious about food and it's effects, self-consciousness is just another facet of it. For most of my life, I wasn't actually miserable about my weight, I just completely ignored it! Once a year or so, usually after seeing a particularly unflattering photograph, I resolved to "do something", with varying successes but it wouldn't be too long until I got distracted by life. You, of course, know on your head that you look better in a swimsuit than all those pounds ago...your heart just needs to catch up. When in doubt fake it 'til you make it!

The last time I was at the doctors, she was telling me that I am getting close to the full band. She didn't really elaborate at that point and I started to wonder about what happens after that point? I mean if I am not at my weight loss goal yet am I just SOL? I know that there is fat around your stomach when they put the band on and eventually you should just have the band on your stomach no fat. Is this what I am waiting for? So far I have done amazing I am down 173 in a year on 5/14 which is amazing. I am so proud but I am getting a little scared.

Physically ice cream isn't going to harm you. It is no different from a protein shake. Nutritionally it probably isn't such a good choice, but I can assure you we all make bad choices occasionally. The band doesn't make us perfect! We are the same people we are before surgery and ice cream tastes good! I don't know when you had surgery, but it sounds like you are not far out from it. Eating the right things gets much easier once you get restriction from being filled. Right now just concentrate on healing. And try not to eat ice cream all the time as it is not a great weight loss tool!

Hi everyone! I was banded March 8th: _ 1st fill March 29th as I had no restriction - 2nd fill was April 24th I have had very modest weight loss, about 9lbs 2 lbs of which I regained last week before the 2nd fill. I have had a problem with vomiting often but inconsistently on different foods, ie. some days I am ok to eat salads with chicken and some days I am not. I am a little discouraged as I keep hearing there is a sweet spot but I am not finding it. I find it difficult to eat as I throw up and also don't feel full with little amounts when I can eat. I almost have my regular appetite. I was also told to take an antireflux medicine daily. Has anyone found this helps with getting food stuck/vomiting and pressure below the breastbone? I could use anyone's advice right about now. Savannah

Yeah; bandster hell, however, during this time you have to find ways to control what you're eating. Through the stress of a divorce (which I can imagine is hard, I've only experienced it as a child), you've got to find a method to controlling what you eat. Losing 10lbs in a month and 1/2 really isn't too bad, but you can be sure that because of the foods you're eating, you're not gonna lose very easily and your loss will be slower. I've been eating a cup of food ever since I got to solids. While I do eat bread sometimes, pizza and a breadstick is not a healthy food choice. The band is all about finding out what foods you can eat that allow you to lose weight. Sure you can treat yourself to a slice of pizza once in awhile, but if you're eating nothing more than unhealthy foods in large portions, then you're really not using your band at all. Per the protein, I've gotten in up to 120g in a day. I'd say you need to go back to eating more protein, as it keeps you full for longer. All I can say is is to go back to the bandster rules. Eat a cup of food, 3-4oz of dense protein, vegetables, and a grain if you're still hungry. Even though you may hate counting your calories, carbs, etc. sometime it is a necessary evil. It helps to see what you're eating and how much of it each day. If you decide to start, try fitday.com or myfitnesspal.com, both are great. Best of luck.

What Is Happening?
BeGuiled replied to Goodgonebad's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, I see, I think that might frustrate me toward feeling angry the same. You gotta adjust, the best thing to do is know that it is you to decide what that means, trying to find what this and that is will also be your task I guess along with the weight loss and personal cooking you do for you. You should designate a taste tester friedndly relationship with some one in your kitchen too. -
Post op diet of liquids, then mushies...lost weight. Who wouldn't? Then 4 weeks after surgery, got my first fill....also happened to be the time when I was allowed to go to full solid foods.... Between the first fill, and my 2nd fill 4 weeks after that, I gained weight....when i went in for my 2nd fill I felt guilty, and discouraged at the same time....\ Fortunately, my Dr. took it all in stride, laughed a little and said it was to be expected....nothing is going to be different until we get this band adjusted and working the way it was designed to do.... So I did get my 2nd fill, and things began to level off after that...not much weight loss, but stopped gaining at least...it took a 3rd fill to really start things happening in a positive way... But everyone is a little different, and their fills are to the individual...if they have a fill at all....

Ok. So, I am 3 weeks post op. I know this is a healing period and the focus is not necessarily weight loss. I also know that it took years to gain the weight and it will take time to lose it. With that said, the scale at my first post-op dr. visit showed me losing 20lbs since pre-op appt. I was psyched! I am a week and a half past that post-op appt. and the scale is showing that I have gained 6 pounds. I'm not happy. I am so tempted to go back on clear liquids. I never thought I would say that but here I am. Anyone experienced this?

Just curious: What and how much do you post banders eat?
Jachut replied to marfar7's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Breakfast for me is quite varied - often about a half cup serve of oatmeal (I dont use packet stuff), good granola, or a high fibre cereal like Allbran (but I prefer the lower GI cereals like granola with nuts and stuff in them). I *sometimes* have a piece of toast with Peanut Butter. This morning I had half an avocado and some macadamia nuts. I get full quickly at breakfast but usually half an hour after my cereal I'll slice up an apple and try to get that down while I do stuff like dry my hair - just to get the fruit in. lunch is often a sandwich - I can eat a sandwich if I use thin sliced wholegrain bread and cut the crusts off - which makes it quite small. I will use fillings like tuna, lettuce, tomato, sprouts and cucumber, or ham and salad vegies. I also like Soup for lunch - usually homemade Soups of lentil/veg varieties. On the weekends we might break out a few gourmet cheeses, some chilli jam and crackers. Very very occasionally I have something naughty like a meat pie (aussie thing). dinner again is way varied - last night we had roast pork - here pork is a lean cut of meat if you buy the right one - baked in the oven with mashed sweet potato, steamed corn and broccoli, tonight I'm using up the leftovers in a casserole, we eat stirfries and a lot of asian style food, I always cook dinner from scratch from fresh ingredients, never rely on packet, convenience foods for dinner and I always try to serve 3 veg with it. I love my slow cooker and am a bit of a gourmet so I go to quite a lot of effort. I like a glass of wine at night, just one and in between meals I might eat some fruit and usually once a day I'll have a cookie or a small bit of chocolate or somethink like that. I drink Water and instant coffee or tea with a dash of milk. I think its usually about 1500 to 1800 calories a day which maintains my weight nicely and I lost well on 1500. I run for 40 minutes to an hour a day. -
I like that Kathy quoted the one thing that made me literally laugh out loud... the icky shake part. Congratulations on your successes in your weight loss journey! I wish you continued steps down the same road... best always, xx

Yup, like @@onthefencejenny said, just normal adjustments the body is going through. You will probably experience a stall here soon, too. Your body is just going a little wacky is all. You are going to flucuate all the time during this journey. If the flucuations are going to drive you crazy, put the scale away so you don't have to see them Here's a good article about why it happens: http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.php

Six Months Out from my Gastric Sleeve Plication Surgery
FatToPhat replied to mednar's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
Congratulations on your success and lifestyle changes. You're on the right path and, hopefully, these will be changes that you maintain for life as well as your weight loss. I think you'll feel more successful in time as you become more and more the "new" you. I think we are all so used to "beating ourselves up' for so long, that we don't know how to pat ourselves on the back once in awhile. YOU did this! Be proud of that. Congratulations, again. -
Keep working at this like you're doing -- on all fronts like you are. You are doing good. Progress (like weight loss) doesn't happen in a straight line. And it only stops when we stop. Obviously, you're not remotely close to stopping!

I too have been struggling lately. Lots of stress in my life and I am starting therapy to work things out (nothing weight loss related, just crap from my previous work situation and PTSD) I find that I loose control of my eating at about 3 in the afternoon and will eat constantly. Today I actually ate a bowl of apple jacks (for the first time in over a year) and dumped. You would think that would give me a wake up call. No... instead I threw up (nausea from dumping) and then laid around my house, munching on pistachios, cottage cheese and beef Jerky. I counted up all the food calories and have eaten over 1500 cal. I know what to do but cannot seem to control myself. I have tried the "pep talk" and drinking Water first but feel depressed. Sorry to go on about my woes but needed to put my frustration online (hoping this will help me get back on track)

Same boat, recently I've relapsed back in to my old ways. Luckily we caught it before getting too deep. Go back to the basics and restart the weight loss journey. I've been having luck so far by doing that. It sucks, and it's hard, but we knew going in it'd be hard to do. Just gotta right the ship and get back on track.
