  1. to be honest, there are a lot more people who never make it to goal than there are who get too skinny. But you're definitely not the first (I got too thin at first as well, but it sounds like yours is worse). not sure when you had surgery, but after you hit your low weight, things sort of shift around and resettle, and you don't look as drawn. Then in year 3, most of us have a 10-20 lb rebound (some more, of course, but 10-20 lbs is extremely common). So you may end up looking fine... (actually, I just checked your stats. I'm 5'6" and got down to where you are now (low to mid-130s) -- my bmi was 22 - so number-wise I was slightly worse. I did look really drawn and unhealthy at that weight...but I was OK with it since I knew almost everyone has a rebound - and I did...)

Stats for petite people! I’m 5’0 with BMI 40

I started at 5'3 and 320 pounds over BMI of 58 - I didn't go in to get weighed until I lost 10 lbs on my own! After 10 years, I am now 65 years old and am about 5'2" lost over 140 pounds and weigh 172 to 175. My BMI is (adjusted for age) 31. I am still considered overweight/obese. But this is as low in weight as I seem to be able to maintain and be healthy - My doctors are pleased. I am active and healthy ! I know, for some, this may not seem like a "VICTORY" - and I have been criticized even HERE for not losing more weight. I am more than thrilled with my results. I am as excited about buying size 14/16 petite clothing as someone buying size 2 clothing. (Well, I think I am as thrilled !!) I have zero desire to have plastic surgery to remove the extra skin - I have had enough surgeries to not want any more. I am over the moon thrilled with keeping it off and with my results. DO YOU.

    May Surgeries - check in!

Give yourself a little time—you are still swollen from the surgery, and I am sure you are still holding gas. At my two week Post-op—I lost 15 lbs from my surgery day—it will happen. I was brain foggy for a good 10 days. I still can’t read for long periods of time. (I am almost 3 weeks post-op). The 2nd week is better but not ideal—I didn’t feel “myself” until this past Tuesday. Hang in there—it will get better every day! 🥰

    May Surgeries - check in!

Maybe I’m expecting too much too soon. Had my bypass surgery on 5/19. Weight myself this morning, 5/22 and only lost 0.8 pounds. Is this normal? Also, has anyone’s eyes gone “batty”? It’s like I can really focus on what I’m reading. I told my nurse at discharge but she didn’t seem concerned. Any help/comments/etc. is appreciated.
  5. you're right - that "gain" in the hospital was because of the IV fluids. Some people gain up to 10 lbs with those. It takes a few days for them to work their way out of your system 20 lbs in two weeks would be an exception. Most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first MONTH. Although I suppose you could find a few folks for whom this isn't true, I would guess anyone losing 20 lbs the first two weeks either 1) started out at a very high BMI (much higher than the average WLS patient) or 2) didn't have much of a pre-op dieting requirement as that kind of loss is likely mostly water (I lost 57 lbs between my six-month supervised diet and my two-week pre-op diet, so any water weight was long gone by the time I had surgery) I lost 16 lbs the whole first month, and I started out at 373 lbs. That's not unusual at all, in fact, it's right in the typical range, and yours will be as well. I think a lot of people's expectations of this come from shows like "My 600 lb Life", but you need to keep in mind that those people are MUCH heavier than the average WLS patient, so of course they're going to drop a lot more weight than the rest of us - esp the first couple of months.

    Social Media Resources/Tips?

Erin Branscom has a YouTube channel (My Level 10 Life) and also a private (paid) Facebook group that's very supportive and there are lots of recipes, meal plans, and food prep tips. On the Facebook group there is also a weekly Zoom chat. I'm really enjoying it, although I haven't actually tried any of the recipes yet. Some of the food prep tips and maybe some of the recipes are available on the YouTube channel. She has lots of videos documenting her whole process. I don't agree with everything she says (she's big into essential oils and hates "chemicals"), but the Facebook group has been wonderfully supportive.

  8. I'm experiencing everything you are except rapid gastric emptying. I've been on pranprozole since Nov 2019. Gastrologist will not even discuss repairing the hernia. I've started needing Tums again. Prior to seeing this doctor I had been eating 8 - 10 Tums a day, I had no idea that was a bad thing! I had them in the console of my truck, in the house and some by the bed so I could roll over in the middle of the night and get a couple. Did your doctor suggest revision immediately or will I have to go through a series of tests, medications etc? I was cash pay for the sleeve, but it was elective surgery. This would be medically necessary I suspect. Thoughts? Advice appreciated.
  9. NovaLuna explained it all so well. I just want to say I also had the Loop DS 10 months ago. Just like NovaLuna, I have a lot of constipation.. In fact it has caused an umbilical hernia I already had to worsen, and now I have to get it repaired. I have had diarrhea as she described also, but it has been a while. I also vomited old blood for the first 3 days after surgery and had to stay in the hospital and extra night for that reason. I was also not told this might happen.. I am a nurse, so I didn't panic too much, but it did scare me at first. Otherwise, I have felt great, and don't seem to have any symptoms of a wheat allergy or celiac. I did pay out of pocket for my surgery, which is one reason I chose the Loop DS. My surgeon calls it the most powerful operation and I knew I needed powerful with over 200 pounds to lose! Not Yet Decided: NEED HELP

Yes, the Doctor told me about this (and I've read about it as well) but I have been at a healthier set point for a very long time (10 years) and am confident I can get back there again. I know it takes a long time to "reset" your set point, but I know it can be done and I'm willing to really work hard to avoid the surgery. I like that my surgeon is challenging me to lose the weight so that I don't have to have the surgery - I really appreciate his honesty. (He said that although the two surgeries are frequently done together, it still means there is more risk, and having only one of the surgeries is preferable.) Thank you for your response -- everything everyone has said has been excellent "food for thought" (ha ha).

When does the pain/discomfort go away? I had my band removed and bypass on 5/19. It’s not pain I’m having, it’s discomfort when I move

How Much Weight Loss During Liquid Diet

I was on a 10 day, 4 protein shakes and 4 one cup servings of non starchy veggies a day diet. Then the day before surgery was clear liquid only. I lost 8lbs.
  13. We were driving out and about today, and had an impromptu lunchtime picnic of Fish n' Chips with Mr. this afternoon at some random park. I ate almost 1/2 that halibut fillet in the box and maybe 10 or so french fries with gravy...am estimating 300 calories for what I ate. Mr., on the other hand had 2 fillets, all his fries, my remaining 1/2 fillet and both our cole slaws. Its funny, cuz it wasn't that long ago that I could probably have eaten as much as he did, but now its like unheard of.

    Cleaning up diet Pre Surgery

Me! Each month I removed a bad habit and added a good habit and built on from there. I had 6 months too. I was up to working out 30 mins a day 5 days a week and eating 1,000 calories by 6 months. I lost 45 pounds pre surgery. I am 2 weeks post op today. I spent 1 night in the hospital, had no complications, and on the pureed diet. NO issues. I was cleared to use my elliptical this week and lift up to 20 pounds, so I am easing back into working out. So far 10 mins a day this week but planning to up it to 15 mins next week. I seriously credit my life style change pre-surgery with my success so far. Go for it! Take it one day at a time and give yourself grace when you’re not perfect.

    Sleeve & gallstones

I had gallstones, hernia, and fix up from when I got the lap band 10 years earlier, I had scar tissue, it was fine no extra problems, you will probably feel better anyway.
  16. Sleeved Nov 2017 then Revised July 2019 (for GERD, hernia, sleeve torsion etc) Almost immediately after no more issues with GERD. I developed a stricture early out but it was dilated and resolved. I initially lost more weight (around 15lbs) but it wasn’t where I or my surgeon wanted me to be so I gained it back. My weight may fluctuate a few lbs on either side of my goal but that is usually due to events I wasn’t hungry immediately after surgery but that’s normal for me, hunger returned and it was no big deal as I had already had a return on hunger a year before with VSG. Some people (myself included) have a experienced a change in restriction from VSG to RNY (less, more or different restriction) I actually had an easier recovery with the revision. It was a short learning curve with new bathroom habits. Overall very satisfied.
  17. I am almost 2 weeks from surgery (5/10) but between the 2 week pre-op and liquids since surgery, I can finally feel comfortable wearing a shirt that does NOT cover my butt!

How Much Weight Loss During Liquid Diet

My first go round (dec 2019) I went from 279 to 264 (15lbs). When I had my revision for gerd (aug 2020) I went from 220 to 212 (8lbs). Both were 2 weeks long. Edited to add- my plan was 3-4 protein shakes a day, all the celery and cucumbers I wanted and 1-2 cups of broth.
  19. 49yr Male, 5/18/20 VSG HW 382, SW 309, CW 215 First visit to the surgeon was 6/27/19 and first nutritionist visit was 7/3/2019. Had a long pre-op program then was delayed by COVID-19, so wasn't sleeved until 5/18/20. Lost 73 pre-op, 94 since - for a total of 167 lbs down! I hit 218 in mid Dec 2020 and have been maintaining in the 213-218 range over the past 6 months. I have worked my way up to about 2000 calories/day (200 carb, 78 fat, 125 protein) which seem to be my maintenance diet based on my BMR and activity level. When I get towards 218, I cut it back for a week or two and settle back down to nearer 215. Bonus for me is I have never vomited even once since having the surgery. That makes me a unicorn based on what I read here on BP! I had an InBody scan at my 1 year post op visit and had gained some muscle and lost fat from my 6 month visit, so that was encouraging. It shows me at ~25% body fat right now, which I can work on. I tend to walk about 20-30 minutes about 5x/week plus 2-3 20 minute strength training sessions per week. Nothing too extreme on the exercise front. It's all about calorie intake for me. You can't outrun your fork! We started working back in the office this week and as I emerge from the "COVID cocoon", I'm dealing with lots of comments. So far they are positive, so that is helpful. We have started going out to eat some, which has taken some adjustments to my meticulous meal planning tendencies (380+ day MFP streak). As long as I can check out the menu in advance and decide what to order, I have done well. The next challenge is work travel, conferences and family events where junk food is constantly available. I have worked hard over the past nearly 2 years to build good habits and now they will be tested. Here is a before and after shot for your viewing pleasure. Next step is likely plastics later this year. Going to do a consult this summer and come up with a plan. That's all for now. If I can do this, you can too. Stick to the plan, build good habits, proteins first, plenty of water, move around - you know the drill.

    May Surgeries - check in!

Hi there! I had my surgery on 5/10 but went to Mexico. There they had me in the hospital for 2 days and then I convalesced at a hotel (resort, actually) for another 2 days - staffed with nurses - before flying home. By the time I needed to board the plane, I was feeling pretty great. Looking back I can't imagine this surgery being outpatient but I am so glad it worked out for you! I can't wait for pureed foods either! Right now I am drinking protein shakes, decaf herbal tea and tomato soup. Sometimes I'll have a SF pudding, jello or popsicle. I just bought an air fryer and a bariatric air fryer cookbook. I am so ready to move on to actual FOOD! Healthier and smaller portions, of course. How are your incisions doing? Last night I decided to leave the bandages off of all of them except the drain tube hole as that one needs a little more TLC. But they have all scabbed over. No redness, just a little itchy around the incisions.

    May Surgeries - check in!

I also had out patient surgery 5/10, I was heading home at 3pm and ready to go. Just get up and start walking when they ask you too and take sips of water. I only took pain meds for 3 days and slept a lot, by day 4 I felt much better. I'm looking forward to getting on pureed foods on Monday 5/24.
  22. I am in the same boat, I lost 85 gained back 10, now I am stuck can't lose but I am not gaining either. I am trying to write down everything I eat. I am so scared I will gain the little that I did lose and be right back in the same boat. I need to lose another 85 at least. Went to the doctor yesterday and they bascially told me there isn't much they can do now for me. I can't take diet pills. So i am going to lose I just need to get mad at myself. If I have to join weight watchers, jenny craig, medical weight loss etc all at once I want to lose the weight. I also feel like I can eat just about like I use to, but I stop myself because I dont want to blow up my stomache bigger than it is.

    Food Before and After Photos

The amount I can eat (four years out) varies hugely. I fast 22/24 three days a week and 16/8 or 18/6 the other four days and I’m v low carb/Keto and absolutely no damn sugar at all! Sugar been gone about six weeks this time. Lowest weight 8 stone 2, highest 10 stone 10 about 6 weeks ago! Dropped 12lbs so now 9 stone 12 (137llbs) feel so good! Sugar is the devil for me! food pics are air fried thighs and aubergine/courgette mix and a chaffles (pancake made from egg and cheese) with fried pek (Keto friendly chopped pork) and mushroom and a slice of emmenthal. I have a ninja foodi 9 in one - pressure, air, steam, bake, sauté, grill etc! And I use it most days. In love with ma foodi!
  24. I'm 10 months post op and I can pretty much eat anything, just way smaller amounts. Because I was so big before I am in still in thr weight loss phase though, so I'm still following my plan. I have had a treat here and there and did fine. I still enjoy food and I feel like once I'm in maintenance I'll eat pretty normal. Like Catwoman says, I think I'll eat like someone who never had a weight problem. It's actually really amazing to me when I get full so fast and I really enjoy the feeling. I never felt that way before. Even though it has been a big change, it has been very welcome and I love it! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
