I have a question on hunger
Monarch1966 replied to mcherder's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am basically experiencing the same thing but I asked my NUT how to get to this point. I wasnt giving myself enough Protein which caused me to get to the starvation point on the hunger scale and I ate anything that was close when i had the hunger pangs. She taught me how to stay saited and she told me that will be my goal for the rest of my life. I basically eat and drink the way i would after I am fully healed from surgery even though I am pre-op. Lots of protein, Fiber, a few carbs (that was surprising) and lots of Water. Of course, she has told me my post op weeks wont be like this due to swelling but i have lost 15 pounds. My fat total is going down and my muscle is going up which is my goal I am told. Since muscle weighs more my scale isnt showing what is really going on but it is dropping a few pounds a week. -

Bowel Movement Post Op
penman53 replied to Choppy1383837799's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I just had terrible stomach pains yesterday afternoon and again this morning after my protein shake. Turns out that I was simply constipated. After an extended time in the water closet and finally having a BM, I feel fine now. But I definitely need to start up on laxitives again. You know the small amount of solid foods that we injest simply fails to provide us with enough roughage to have regular stools in my opinion. I know that I have had very few issues since getting sleeved in July. The constipation is really the only problem I have had. -
Ok, quick stats - 7 weeks post op. Eating Solid Foods. Getting in Protein and Water (well a little light on water lately but working on it) So here's the question. I have noticed my hair start to shed more than usual. I have very long, thick hair. I knew it was going to fall out and am prepared for it, however I have a hair appointment the end of October where I go in and get my usual color and highlights. Is the bleach they use going to make my hair fall out more? Is it going to really damage it? If so what about just coloring it? I can go dark for the winter months but just need to be prepared. Also - prior to surgery I have a thing going on with my stylist where we are growing my hair down to my butt. It's something I have always wanted to do and she says I have the perfect hair for it. If it gets too bad how do I explain to her what happened without telling her about surgery?

I would really like an answer if you know it.................
Beach Lover replied to Beach Lover's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am going to make a cup now and see what it heats up to. I heated it for 90 seconds and it went to 150 so maybe I should back it down to a minute. But it make sense that you can cook meat and eggs and still have protein. -

I looked this up on a body builders site..Maybe it will help: Heating up Protein will not have any detrimental effect. Heating up enzymes (protein catalysts) will most probably denature them and destroy their function. Unless you wish to ingest functional enzymes (not likely) heating up a Protein shake is totally fine. -
Frustrated and Need Help
James Marusek replied to LisaCan do this's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
According to my nutritionist after you enter the Maintenance phase, your meals should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs but always put protein first. Fats are important because they help to control hunger. It is common to have some limited weight gain after weight loss surgery. They call it a 20 pound bounce. The important thing is not let go beyond this 20 pounds. Most times this weight gain is due to a poor choice of snacks. Snacks should be limited to primarily to whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. Also do not expect to lose weight at a rate similar to right after surgery. Generally if you gained the additional weight over a couple years, then it may take a couple years of watching what you eat to get back down. -
4 Days Postop-Not Getting Enough Protein
suzcomptime replied to newfmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would suggest getting Unjury unflavored protein to supplement. You can put it into soups, yogurt, etc because some of the mushy/puree food does not have enough protein without supplementing with 1 or more protein shakes. If you can't stand the shakes, than at least try and get some protein in with the food you can eat. -
I thought this day would never get here. I leave this morning for San Diego and I will be sleeved tomorrow. I am not nervous at all except the flight back. I hope I don't become to weak to handle the airports and the flights. Does any know if your allowed to take protein tubes on the plane? I really don't know what to drink other than water but I still want to get my protein in today?

High protein first before anything be careful of hidden carbs and sugars

I have religiously used a food scale since the beginning of my six month pre-op diet back in March. I actually have 4 of them now because I have forgotten one on a couple of trips and had to pick a new one up. It is my most relied-upon tool after the sleeve itself. I know that I eat too fast, but it hasn't caused any problems. One of my meat meals (e.g., 2 oz of salmon and 1 oz of green beans) takes about 10 minutes to eat. As far as this grazing thing -- I have always taken grazing to mean you are constantly eating throughout the day and many of these foods are things you shouldn't be eating, not that you are working toward your appropriate daily Protein goals. I eat 8 times a day, about 90 minutes apart. I'm not grazing; I'm eating comfortable size meals that add up to about 950-1000 calories, less than 20 carbs, and 90-100 grams of protein per day -- exactly where I should be.

I'm a little over 5 months post op and I carry the following everywhere I go: beef jerky, a day's worth of vitamins & a thermos. Earlier when I was newly sleeved, I would also carry around a mix bottle with a scoop of protein powder in it, and fill it with water if/when I needed it.

I'm doing a lot of prep for my sleeving on Jan 26, but one of the things I'm most excited about is being able to define my style in a new way when I do lose the weight. A lot of options will be open to me since I'll be able to choose more on what I really like rather than what just fits. So, to motivate myself, I'm making a list of things I can't wait to wear. For example: - my grandfather was an avid cruiser who spent a lot of time in Asia. This resulted in a number of custom-made suits and tuxedos in every imaginable color and style. My favorites are an old-school tuxedo, an old Harris tweed, and a red linen tuxedo jacket. I'm going to rock the eff out of both when I fit into them. - I found my old Brownie and Girl Scout sashes. I want to make a dress using the sashes as ornament (they don't fit right now). - Every outfit worn in the film Troop Beverly Hills. What about you??

Had the same problem and increasing my fluids really helped. At 4 months post-op I slacked off my liquids and continued taking my stool softener but got stopped up again. Back to pushing the fluids! In my case I know it's the high protein that is stopping me up.

Hi, I'm pre-op and have been using a whey-based Protein powder for my Breakfast in the a.m.'s. Does anybody know of -- perhaps actually even used -- a brand of vegan Protein Powder for shakes that meets your surgeon's nutritional requirements? I don't know if anything like this exists, but if it does I'd like to know about it. Thanks, corgiqueen

Hi, Is anyone doing Atkins post-op? I find I've done a lot better on a high-Protein, low-carb eating plan than anything else. If so, what kind of modifications have you made? What Atkins friendly foods have you had trouble with? My doctor prescribed antacid for 2 months post-op...Does anyone know if this is on an as-needed basis or meant to be taken daily? Thanks in advance!

3 Weeks Later.. My Thoughts
fell4falls replied to mouse trap's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I, too, am at my third week, and your experience sounds a lot like mine. I had no problems after surgery, or any since. I have no problems with liquids or proteins, either. I am a little discouraged today, because this morning the scale was up 2 lbs from my last weigh in. However, I know that I am dangerously close to that time of the month, so I am hoping that the 2 lbs is simply water retention. -
Hi to all., Here is my 3 week breakdown. but first just a recap .. I started this journey July 2011 started my 3 month Insurance qualifications in August at a weight of 318lbs after the 3 months i was hovering around 310lbs .. My surgery- My Doc. is so personable and very informative ., Dr. Schrope ( Columbia NY / Valley hospital NJ) is amazing, caring and funny.. Thanks you For giving me my life back.. Having a hard time w/ food choices
shelyshely replied to redone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand where you are coming from. I am getting my first fill next week, when is yours? I am scared to eat, I want this to work so badly that I keep falling back to the soft foods choices. I've been living on Peanut Butter with Protein mixed in, Protein drinks, V8, pudding cups, tuna, eggs, some chicken and fish. I have eaten wrong for so many years that I feel like all food is going to be bad for me. I liked the weeks right after surgery because it was so easy, we were so limited on choices and they told us exactly what to have and when. On my own I suck. Although, I have found a great site with some cool recipes that I am slowly trying maybe it will help you too. theworldaccordingtoeggface She has had gastric bypass but she has some great tips and ideas. -
I have problems with the lactose in whey-based Protein powders, so I went to my local health-food store and looked for a protein powder without whey in it. I found a protein powder by NutriBiotic that says Vegan right on the front label. It's called Vegan Rice Protein. I buy it in chocolate and vanilla--I like it just fine. It's not as high in protein as whey-based protein powders, but here's what the nutritional label says for one heaping Tbsp: Calories 55 Fat 0.3 g Cholesterol 0 mg Sodium 8 mg Carbohydrates 1.8 g Protein 12 g Adding it to soymilk would probably bring up the grams of protein enough to make it competitive with the whey-based protein powders. My nutritionist was fine with me using this protein powder pre-op (especially because I was throwing up the whey-based protein drinks!), but wanted me to make extra sure that I take a Multivitamin along with this if I use it as a Meal Replacement now--because it isn't a significant source of Vitamins and minerals. Good luck!

Having a hard time w/ food choices
Mel Mel replied to redone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I find that the unhealthy choices are usually easiest. So I'm trying to keep healthy options available to me. Like I just made a big pot of chili so now I have lunches for work and if I'm really hungry I can have a half serving as planned snack, or some peanut butter on an apple is pretty easy and satisfying. I also keep sugar jello and sugar free ice pops. That helps if I just feel like having something but not really hungry. Sugar free pudding helps with those time of the month cravings. Also experiment and find things you like. I'm not a daily salad eater but I will grill up veggies and eat a whole plateful that way. Find healthy choices you do like and that will make your life easier. -
Thank you, keep up the hard work, you'll do great. I did not experience much hair loss, talk to your nutritionist about increasing your protein. Just a thought:)

Eat whatever you want it it fits within your daily allowed macros(Protein, carbs, fats). You lost weight because the added calories gave a little boost to your metabolism. I usually go 3 days eating below 60g of carbs from good sources and then on the fourth day eat over 300g of carbs from anything I want... keeps my metabolism charging along. I hIt a stall every couple weeks but nothing a boost in protein and calories won't fix. Your early out so IMO I would focus on keeping your metabolism working hard rather than restricting calories to unhealthy level. Its not so easy getting your metabolism working again at normal levels.
