  1. YUM, the foods sound amazing. I am a vegetarian as well and these were some amazing food ideas. I've never heard of Spagetti squash! Also, the Wendy's Chili sounds delish and instead of meat you could use Smart Ground veggie beef, it's made out of soy and really does taste like ground beef, same texture but very good for your and loaded with Protein. I also love the morning star Veggie chicken Nuggets, loaded with soy protien and actually pretty low in calories. Tastes great!! My mouth is watering just thinking about all this food. I've been on full liquids for 10 days now, 7 days post-op. On Christmas eve I'll be on mushies and I'm already prepping my menu!! I normally didn't eat breakfast either but I learned something like 80% of obese people do not eat breakfast. Even though you may think you are saving on the calories, eating in the morning jump starts your metabolism and therefore you burn more calories through out the day. Grab a yogurt or protien shake. Anything that is loaded with protein will get your body going and help shed some pounds.. Good Luck!
  2. My sis isn't vegetarian and when I made the yellow squash for her I mixed in a bit of Canadian bacon, she loved it. She won't eat anything.

Which Foods Can’t You Eat Now?

Have some. Carbs are constantly listed as the devil, but you shouldn't cut out whole food groups. Corn and actually potatoes that aren't fried aren't that bad. If you look at vegetarians and vegans, all I know are healthy, they aren't obese or so, and get their protein.
  5. There are a multitude of reasons people choose not to eat meat, or certain kinds of meat, and all are valid. She stated that she is a pescatarian, which means she eats fish. She may also be lacto-ovo which would mean she drinks milk and eats eggs. But even if she's not lacto-ovo, I don't think we should be trying to convince her to eat meat when she has religious/moral/health reasons for not. I am no longer vegetarian, but was raised that way for religious reasons (we were lacto/ovo/pescatarian in practice) and I can assure you that there are MANY ways to get plenty of protein without eating meat. There are a number of high protein foods that are not animal-based. http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-4771/10-Vegan-Sources-of-Protein.html To the OP: I have been trying to find meal planning help with my own food issues, and have found that in general the options are not very good. There's tons of recipe ideas here in the recipe section and on Pinterest, but not a lot of information about how to plan meals especially if you're planning to do once-a-week or once-a-month cooking. There are resources for OAW/OAM cooking, but it's with their recipes and doesn't offer a lot of insight as to how to put your own recipes in place of theirs. If you search once-a-week or once-a-month cooking, and read enough of the books/resources, there are basic principles you can apply. Like which kinds of food freeze well, which are good for make-ahead, etc. I personally have found it very hard to implement from scratch. But if you dig enough you can find them. I will offer that if you're doing low-carb, you shouldn't worry overmuch about fat. The concept of low-carb requires a higher fat content than in a "normal" diet. I wouldn't go overboard, but since you don't eat red meat, your fat options are going to tend to be the "healthy" fats, so I really wouldn't worry much about that. Also, I advise getting some clarification around "only 3 meals" a day. Post-op, your intake at a sitting will be so little that I don't believe only allowing 3 meals a day is wise. My instructions are to eat every 3-4 hours. Many of the people here who have 3 meals only as instructions, were allowed 2-3 Protein Drinks outside of those 3 meals as "snacks". Others are told 3 meals with 2 or 3 low calorie high protein Snacks. Good luck! If I remember when I get home (feel free to PM me to remind me) I can post some of the OAW/OAM resources I've found.

    Nightmares.

I was a vegetarian for a few years and I remember the first couple weeks I would have dreams that I was just like barbarically eating large quantities of meat. The funny thing is I've never really been a big meat eater anyway. Lol

    Vegetarian

Doesn’t matter what diet you follow, vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, etc., if you eat more than your body needs to function you will put on weight. It’s a sad but simple truth. It doesn’t matter where your calories come from a calorie is a calorie (of course some calories come with better nutrients). You could eat a 2000 calorie burger, fries & soda meal & nothing else for the whole day or eat 2000 calories of lean protein & vegetables but if your body only needs 1500 calories to function the extra 500 calories will be converted & stored as fat & you will put on weight.
  9. I'm about to enter the soft foods stage of my diet plan and am so excited to actually eat food again instead of just drinking protein. Does anybody have any vegetarian recommendations for recipes they liked while doing soft foods?

    Vegetarian

If vegetarians cut out refined sugar, white flour, and breaded/fried things...it's a lot harder to overeat. I'm not 100% vegetarian, but I eat meat maybe twice a week. I've found that eliminating those three things from my diet...refined sugar, white flour, and fried stuff.....makes controlling my calories a LOT easier. But oh yeah....you can be a very chunky vegetarian if you have an unquenchable love for fresh bread, desserts, unlimited nuts and dried fruit....easy ways to make calories skyrocket and your weight can easily get out of control. That said...fiber is your friend and vegetarians eat more fiber, generally. Fiber slows the natural sugar down and increases the good gut bug diversity.

I am following a sort of South Beach diet style, low glycemic index rather than strictly low carb.Im a lactose intolerant lacto/ovo vegetarian, so low carb is pretty hard to follow.

  13. I do a vegetarian version used tofu crumbles as a meat substitute. I also did a similar dish with lentils, Tofurky sausage and tomato sauce. Have to purée that sausage a bit when it's done otherwise it's not pretty. #steelers Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  16. Transitioning back to vegetarian and just wanted to try a different type of protein shake besides whey based (I will be ovo lacto pescatarian for a while still until I make it as close to vegan as possible) Which brand does anyone recommend to add to coffee like creamer? This is the only way I drink the shake so far... Thanks!
  17. Some of my soft-food favorites have been: deviled eggs vegetarian cupcake-tray lasagna Trader Joe's boxed creamy tomato soup (also my favorite of the puree stage) carrot lentil soup with extra protein added 10-minute steamed eggs (for easy shell removal and a little bit of translucence at the center)-- for breakfast with just a bit of sugar-free syrup (+Boca morning sausage), or for lunch/dinner broken up into soup
  18. Hi, I'm preop. One surgeon I saw insisted that I follow a high protein, low carb, low fat diet after the op. Nothing "squishy", which wouldn't fill me up (low fat yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, protein drinks), no beans (the staple of a veg diet). These foods are one of the main ways for a veg (not vegan) to get protein! It doesn't seem that an Atkins-like diet is realistic for a veg. I do eat a little fish but don't want to eat it three times a day. What do you think? Didn't a nutritionist work with you to find the best diet for you, not mandate a particular eating plan? I think the surgeon is completely unrealistic.

    real Food

The BEST fast food I found is the lunch bar at Whole Foods Market, Sprouts, Barons, Henry's, or Harry's There is such a huge array of very delicious wholesome foods, that it puts MOST fast food places to shame. The Whole Foods near me just opened up a Smoked/BBQ section. So, if I don't want deli, Italian, Asian, or vegetarian, and I can visit the smoked section.
  21. food divides into 3 categories and 3 only. Protien, Fat, Carbs. If it aint a fat or a carb its Protein. Doesn't matter what source it comes from, soy, animal or other plant. All protein is protein. There was a lot of confusion for vegetarians a few years back with people being advised to combine Proteins. Basically, theres about 14 animo acids we can't make ourselves so we have to get them from food. One of the easiest ways is from another animal, as all the ones we need are there. But you don't have to have animal flesh in order to be getting everything you need. And you don't have to combine plant-based proteins in order to get them all either. The body is an amazing thing. It will work with what you give it and then when you eat something else it will take what it needs from that. As long as you eat a variety of foods, you will get what you need. With regard to doomsaying. Simply ask yourself one question, what does this person get out of saying that? There are numerous warnings about soy, but who are making these warnings? I've only heard anti-soy comments from pro-meat advocates. Asian cultures, especially Japan and China, have lived on soy for centuries. I do not think they have a substantially higher rate of Alzheimers.

    Any May 2014 sleevers?

Is anyone having any particular type of food aversion? I have always been your typical American carnivore and now I hate meat! Well, I don't hate it but the minute it crosses my lips, it makes me nauseous! I'm highly frustrated by this and never planned on being a vegetarian but that's how I eat these days!
  23. Wondering how everyone intends to deal with the Thanksgiving feast? Are you going to be selective or just eat a little of everything? (assuming you are far enough post-op that it's safe to do so). Or limit yourself to certain things? We usually go to a Brazilian churrascaria where my carnivore son and husband are in ecstasy, and my vegetarian-wannabe son and I are happy with the salads and sweets. It's always been a good deal for the restaurant when we walk in, because my sons and I never could hold too much, although my husband definitely could. But this year, I know I have to be discriminating because I can't eat "a little of everything" there. So I had to think about what I REALLY like, and of the plethora of things, I like a spicy sausage they have, their grilled pineapple, their cheese rolls (pao de quejo), and their to-die-for flan. Four things. Of course, I used to eat a lot more than four things, but this year, I think I will focus on those four things and have a bit of each and call it a wonderful feast. And it will be a feast food-wise because all of those are things I don't allow myself on my regular days (carbs, sweets, fruit). What's your plan?
  24. So day 2 pre op diet I modified my diet so I didn't go cold turkey I did one Protein Shake a day for last 10 days or so. Lost 14 pounds. Not bad. Feel great. No loss of energy. Yesterday was day 1 2 shakes. Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch. I didn't do enough Water Sensible dinner was actually vegetarian I noticed at the end of day I was really agitated I mean downright edge of insanity. I had a very stressful day at work and blamed it there Today I am having moderate workday but it's 2 pm and I am ready to rip people into 50,000 pieces. I am so sick of bs I just want to punch someone in the face. Oh my flipping lord! And the back pain from losing 14 pounds in last 10 days is excruciating I can't find a comfortable sitting standing or laying position. And the stress is making it worse. No loss of energy. No headaches. Just really pissed off, a little hungry not a lot, and ugh!!!! I am gonna go take a Xanax Like seriously. Not expecting this
  25. I don't really view my way of eating as a diet per se. I've been a vegetarian for 15 years. I've been endeavoring to eat clean for 3. I do make allowances. I try to follow a 85/15 rule. For me that means I am eating clean at least 85% of the time. At this point I consider how I eat a true lifestyle so I don't feel restricted. I may still be in the honeymoon phase because I really haven't had a longing for of the more decadent things I used to eat. I've been able to indulge in chocolate 3 times since I've been sleeved without overdoing it. I've had a cookie once. I am just really happy that I have made it 4 months without and allergic reaction or a trip to the ER for an allergic reaction. This lifestyle works for me.
