    Starting a second journey; Questions

I am revising band to bypass later on this month. My doctor is not a fan of going band to sleeve because the sleeve is typically positioned over the scar tissue from the band, which has an increased chance of leaking versus him being able to work around the tissue to create the bypass pouch. He also thinks with me having a hormonal co-morbidity that causes weight gain, I can use that extra push of caloric deficiency. That being said, tons of people go band to sleeve with great success! The biggest deterrent I see from the sleeve is if you have any problems with GERD or acid reflux, they often don't suggest the sleeve because it can make those worse causing people to ultimately revise to bypass to help alleviate the reflux. Your doctor can help you make the best informed decision for you, but in the meantime, there's plenty of revision experiences on the board, so I'm sure other people can give you better insight! Good luck!
  2. That seeming "Weight gain" happened to me too! While the scale might not be your friend right now, the internet certainly CAN be. I read a ridiculous amount before and still after the surgery, looking for comfort that what was going on- from that post surgery weight GAIN to the hideous "gurgly gut" that plagued me for about a week- was normal. Keep your chin up, my friend. It will get better and the weight will come off.
  3. Your doctor is right. Stalls are normal and it will pass. BTW, stress=cortisol=weight gain, so you might want to chill. Just follow your doctor's meal plan and better yet, STAY OFF THE SCALE!

    Facial Hair

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 21 and prescribed Spironolactone. I thought it was a miracle pill for a long time because my skin was flawless, with invisible pores, no blemishes, and a lovely glow. I lost weight at first, too. Over time I began to experience detrimental effects from it, with weight gain being a major issue. It's a bit contradictory because it can make you lose weight at first, but over time can actually make you gain weight. I noticed a sharp increase in weight gain when I bumped up to 200mg. At first I thought it was due to age because I was hitting my late 20s, but it was so rapid. I began doing searches of it online and found that many other women had experienced weight gain and other unpleasant effects. I also read some alarming reviews of it (along with many happy ones) on MakeupAlley. If you go the site you can do a search of Spiro reviews with lowest ratings first. There are a few from women who've taken it long-term and have very negative reviews. I'm not advocating against taking it because it definitely helped me out at first with my complexion. I just am writing this as a word of warning and to encourage that anyone taking it be mindful about weight gain.
  5. When I ate a pickled onion (small cocktail one!) ... when I ate a slice of 'LivLife Low Carbs Seriously Seeded Loaf' - 68cals per slice, 3.8g carbs per slice!! 0.22g sodium per slice. And, after just being away at the weekend - the weight goes up when I don't weigh myself every day! I tracked my food - kept below 1000cals, 25g carbs... maybe I didn't drink enough water??!! Eating anything new seems to cause a weight gain it seems ... "huff".... @GreenTealael fantastic topic!
  6. I was about where you are 4 days ago, but today is my 15th day post-op and I turned a corner (thankfully)! I feel amazing today, minimal pain and it's the last day I have be on clear liquids. It was also my first day back to work! I'm not sure if you are on clear or full liquids? Clear liquids-drink broth, protein shakes made with water, Isopure, SF/no carb Jello, SF/no-carb popsicles. Full liquids-Drink protein with almond or skim milk (Syntrax nectar is my favorite protein-no carbs, mixes well with water or milks), low-fat creamy soups (such as low fat/low carb butternut squash soup or tomato soup or cream of broccoli soup with the chunks strained out). I use Ideal Protein or Barwise products, but you can also make your own from scratch if you have time. Soft foods phase-eat scrambled eggs or tofu, low-fat cottage cheese, low-fat SF yogurt (use Fage Greek fat free for optimal protein with low carbs). Eat only 2 oz at a time. Do not drink 30 minutes before or after you eat to train yourself to eat slowly and fill on 2 oz. If you drink while you eat, you will eat more than you should and can stretch your stomach which will ultimately lead to slowed or stopped weight loss. Eventually this will become weight gain. Phase 4-lifelong phase is food you can tolerate, only 2 oz at a time, chew/chew/chew! No beverage 30 minutes before and after eating. Set a timer on your phone to help you. Journal everything you eat to hold yourself accountable. Please let me know if you want me to email you my post-op eating plan. All the best to you! It will get better and suddenly you will feel amazing! Excellent advice - all so true!!! My Protein shake is Premier Protein chocolate and I love them. That's how I kept my protein up. At first when they were to heavy, I cut them with milk. I just got told today to only have 1 shake a day. I love them, but it will be cheaper

    I am GAINING weight

The important thing is that while gaining weight, which is a measure of your body's total mass, you're not gaining fat. With what you're eating, it's physically impossible to gain 2# of fat in that amount of time. It's critical to see & understand the difference there. Weight does NOT equal fat. The most common cause of rapid weight gain is Water retention. There are tons of things out there that cause this: menstruation (typically you start to retain 2 weeks prior and hold it until a few days after), eating salty foods, not drinking enough water, medication, diet, season/temperature, etc. This is why scales have killed so many diets. Someone could have lost 10# of fat, but retained 12# of water, and they think "Well crap, if I'm giving all this up and *gaining* 2# screw it, I'm going to McDonald's!" If you want a true measure of what's going on, rely on measurements and body fat analysis. Scales really don't tell you anything other than what everything in and on your body weighs at any given point in time.

    Getting Back on Track

Hi there I'm new to WLS so I still attend support groups and here's what they say to consider about regain: How much have you regained? Have you changed your habits? (Eating, exercise, sleep, work, etc.) Any new medical issues or life changes? Have you seen your Primary or Surgeon recently? I've also heard some chatter that something happen around year 3-4 that are unavoidable that prompt weight gain (idk the validity I'm 6 months out) But take a strong honest look at yourself then seek MEDICAL ADVICE from your Medical team first And you totally got this ... Again

Can't get enough calories to exercise...

I'm in the same boat. A trainer suggested that I use a weight gain Protein enhancer that people use to gain weight. They are high in calories and was told to use it before my work out. GNC carries these. I have a doc appointment tomorrow and will ask about this. It makes sense, but, seems so wrong. jake

Can't get enough calories to exercise...

I wouldn't use the "weight gain" protein, but you should be getting more calories if you get in all your protein. Make sure you are getting in all your protein every day and then you can work on adding healthy carbs and fats. I would recommend that you work with your NUT closely to make sure you are getting proper nutrition.

    Waiting for approval in GA

Hi! I'm in the waiting stage as well. Luckily only 3 months here in TN, but I'm nervous something will come back and say, nope, you gotta wait more. I am a lapband failure - surgery in 2011, only lost around 40 pounds, but was able to keep it that way for years. I started having issues with reflux and weight gain, so they removed the band November 2019. Now just waiting on the new approval for RNY.

    Anybody Here Hyperthyroid?

That's a good point. When I went in there I already knew about the hyperthyroid. The first doctor I saw nine years ago made me eat a nuke and get radioactive to check for nodules and etc. I did not have Grave's Disease. She considered it "idiopathic". The next doctor I had, who hated me, told me I was slightly hyperthyroid and that was "good news", because I was then not *hypothyroid". i remember telling him I thought this was part of the reason I ate so much -- I could easily put down a whole Domino's bacon chicken ranch pizza by myself in those days, and I remember him saying to me, " Well, we should talk about why you're eating a whole pizza, that's not good for you at all." And I just sort of looked at him. ( Are we not talking about that right now? Hello?) But I did go in complaining of exhaustion and anxiety this time- actually I just have trouble sleeping mostly. So I had Iron deficiency anemia and hyperthyroid, sort of as usual, but she wanted to treat my anxiety with beta blockers and tricyclics because, basically, all doctors seem to think I'm trying to hit them up for benzos. Which I should add, I am -- I don't abuse them but it is darn nice to have one or two floating around in your purse for luck. If I had deformed left cardiac ventricle or frequent bouts of tachycardia and excessive sweating and all that, I would go on the things. If I had any other risk factor for a heart attack or stroke, I would definitely go on them. But I don't want to fight off another fifty pounds for freakin *insomnia*. I'm not even convinced the problem is actually my thyroid. None of these last two doctors did that other test -- the FT4 or whatever it's called. I'm really sensitive to drugs that cause weight gain. Not only that, I think...well, really -- my sense is that one should do as little messing with one's thyroid as possible because endocrinology is the most delicate of sciences. I'm not going to start drugging it or hacking at it just because some doctor I've known for ten minutes tells me to do it. I swear I think doctors just throw drugs at people lately. Maybe it will work, who knows, I'm being "treated". But here's the kicker question: is it really a better medical decision to prescribe two heavy duty meds on top of one another after a glance at a lab printout and five minutes talking to me than it would have been to just write me a prescription for Ativan? Bah.
  13. Is it normal to gain weight during the puree stage? I've been losing weight nicely but now it seems like I'm gaining. It is hard to get in all the protein so I'm working on that. But just wanted to know if anyone else has had this experience. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Up 5 Pounds?!?

Thanks, Shawn! 5 pounds of muscle, I wish! LOL! I meant to say that I'd stressed the weights so heavily that I was retaining water-weight to cushion those aching muscles. I have more obsession than umpph lately...I really want to eat what I want to eat, and then over train in the gym, which is my "quasi" trade off, with benefits  You're absolutely right, Wheetsin! But when that weight gain is staring you in the face, it's very hard to be rational. Sigh. Salsa, you crack me up...how funny! I used to do the drive thru, and haven't in so long. My weakness was the filet o fish and the hottest, greasiest fries available! And those 99 cent double cheeseburgers. Just typing it now makes me wanna choke! I think you are right also. 30 lbs. ago my rings were loosening. For a few days here, they wouldn't spin. Yep, t'was Water weight, and it went away by this morning! I did get a small fill, .1cc. I am leary at this high level, but wanted more help from the band as my willpower and choices were starting to slack. If restricted enough, my choices don't include 'bad' ones. Thanks to all for holding me up thru this rough spot!

    Effect on families

I am sorry for your experience and how you feel this affected your family. That said... weight loss surgery did NOT cause any of this. Mental health problems and addiction were not because he had surgery. They would have reared their ugly head even if he didn't have surgery. He didn't do the work to get through the mental health issues that probably lead to the obesity and additions in the first place. He would have to WANT the health to deal with those mental health issues. He would have had to have a good team of docs to address his issues as a whole. To blame the surgery is just wrong. And why come on our site now... 13 years later... to tell people you hate the surgery? It is not helping those who are looking to make their decision. It would be much more effective to warm them to deal with their mental health issues that MAY have caused their weight problems in the first place. And BTW, I do NOT have an unhealthy relationship with food... other (medical) issues triggered my weight gain and other issues prevented me from losing the weight. and as a whole, the process of approving individuals for surgery and taking care of their physical and mental health needs have improved drastically over the last 13 years. For example... most of us have to have a complete psych eval to be even considered for surgery. Most of us have to see nutritionists regularly. And many of us are referred for mental health treatment. I hope he gets the help he needs, but again... it isn't the surgery that is to blame, and he has to WANT to get better before he will get better. That is how addition recovery works... with a lot of help from the mental health professionals.

    Mirena!

Ok so I see what your saying.....I need to look at the overall benefit that I gain from it and talk to my doctor to see if we feel as if is a hindrance to my weight loss. I know that when I went in to get my Mirena I was 202 with the lapband, and after 4months I ballooned to 230, and from that point on I could not get the weight off. That then lead me to struggles with my band and I ended considering RNY, and I was approved then shortly after went through the process. The only thing is that I never thought that the weight gain could have come from the Mirena until recently. So I'm gonna google this topic some more. Thanks soooo much for sharing. Oh and I loved the I'm not an expert! Lol SD: 10/10/12, Converted from Lapband to RNY, HW (before band) 263, HW (RNY) 230, Preop 219, after surgery 223, current 201

@@Sleeve_Sistah85 OMG R U kidding me?? I can't get over any doctor saying such a thing like that to his patient discouraging/upsetting/hurtful to his patient/you - like he did don't think his comments had anything do to a possible "bad day" he was having the only comment i will make is "maybe" he was thinking like" if you've already had a 2 lb weight gain, you might not be true to the rules/sleeve" i'm sure that is not the case for you and you will follow all the rules necessary if he WAS concerned about the above - maybe he should have said something like "you really shouldn't gain weight now while you are on pre-op just starting thats not a good indication of things to come post op" it is true you SHOULD lose(or not gain) weight pre-op, but his words were unnecessary/mean/crazy show him you will comply with the rules - prove him wrong the above being said.............. i am the pot calling the kettle black do as i say not as i do i didn't have a pre-op required - had a food funeral for a "few days" i should have "forced" myself to do a pre-op diet, didn't chose to I weighed 4.3 lbs more the DOS than the first time i was weighed a month earlier ahhhh, confession is good for the soul good luck with surgery I KNOW you will follow the rules and be a success speedy recovery kathy
  18. weight gain and loss is driven by hormones and men and women have a very different mix going on inside. This will have an effect on the pace of weight loss. Nothing fair about it but you can't change biology. If he keeps those bad habits it will bite his ass down the road with weight regain.
  19. I take meds for my hyperthyroid, no weight gain here, I think you should try it and see what happens, I sleep a lot better and the sleep we need to help with weight loss.

    Weight loss surgery

Today my mom said that me needing surgery for my weight is all in my head. I share a house with mom and dad and my brother and whenever they can they take jabs at my weight gain. I've told them that it upsets me but they kinda do it anyway. I'm trying my best to watch what I'm eating and when I say I don't want to eat something they're cooking they talk about me like I'm not even there, saying sarcastically, oh she's not eating this she's on her diet, it really makes me think badly of myself for letting myself get this way with the weight gain and all. I've never had a real problem with my weight until I went to rehab for drug addiction. I really think I just substituted drugs for food. I'm fine with it because if I can overcome my drug addiction, I have 7 years sober, I have faith I can overcome food addiction. I just don't know how to handle all their snide comments about my weight. It's very hurtful especially coming from my own family. Anyone have any ideas on how to handle this. I am 4'11" and my starting weight was 238, I am now about 208-210, I am fluctuating all the time but they are really depressing me, at least I'm trying to better myself, when I came back home after my divorce at 238 lbs I also had to have a breast reduction surgery that helped me be able to exercise, I was a 42J now I'm a 42D, a huge improvement that enabled me to at least get up and go to the gym. I've been extremely active since last winter after my breast surgery, working outside on the yard, garden, mowing the lawn, now I can do all these things but no significant weight loss. Main problem though I am wondering how to handle the sarcastic remarks and not feel so alone and just want to cry. Any ideas??

    Fast Weight Gain

Hello all, Have you ever gone off of your program and eaten a little too much and bam..the weight just heaps on? Do you know why that happens? Is it because we limit our calorie intake and then when we eat like regular again or add a small meal our bodies don't know what to do?

    Fast Weight Gain

Hi Julie, I gain 4.5 lbs on vacation last week...Yes, I think it's because we taken so few calories after being banded. The good news is weight gained quickly will generally come back off quickly if you do it ASAP after the gain.
  23. Wheetsin

    Fast Weight Gain

This is band specific, and addresses a few diets... A short, quick weight gain is probably weight gain but not fat gain. If you think about it, most of us are following low carb diets by virtue of difficulty eating high carb foods. When you break ketosis (long story short) the first thing your body does is suck in all the water it can. I followed the induction phase of Atkins for about a year, and was in ketosis like no one's business. When I would break my diet, it wouldn't be unusal for me to gain 6, 8 (once even 15) pounds overnight. Guess what - I could still wear the same size that I had not been able to wear 15 fat pounds before. Weight loss/gain is a fairly complicated series of body processes. Your body does a lot to keep from losing anything, and can kick in some amazingly strong "survival" modes (Why do you think the most adamant of dieters usually caves in around day 4-ish? has a lot more to do with what your body's doing that your will power). Our bodies want back what was taken from them.
  24. Thanks MacMadame, I never thought to look on their website. Going through VM hell (especially if it can only be done during work hours where I work in a cube, and don't want that kind of conversation overheard) then talking to someone that doesn't have a clue or, me not understanding the medical technology discourages me. I was self pay because, while my insurance DOES cover WLS, my BMI wasn't high enough to qualify. But I could see the direction I was headed, and after a lifetime of dieting only to gain it all back, why wait until I did qualify. I was told at the time, that if I had complications, and needed it removed, that insurance WOULD cover it. I assume that is if it is medically necessary, not just because I want it out. I don't have problems with the band when it is unfilled, but obviously then it isn't doing much either. From experience, I know that unfilled=weight gain. We've had a tough year financially, right now, I literally don't even have the money for a fill/unfill so there is no possible way I could pay for a surgery. That is what is so frustrating, I can't afford to play around with the fills to find the right spot! The sleeve just sounds so much easier. Unfortunately, I had never heard of it when I was banded.

    Benched by orthopedic

I can sympathize... I have bursitis flare up in my hip every now and then and I had a bad case 2 weeks ago. It KILLED me to lay off exercise for a week but I did it and was able to get back into it quickly. I don't think the steroid shots have the same weight gain effect as oral steroids (but I might be wrong on that). Once the inflammation dies out, you will feel so much better. It's a cycle -- flare up, stay flared up. Kill the flare and try to avoid re-injuring and it eventually will die out completely. Do what the doctor says and rest it up -- will heal much more quickly than if you push it too soon.
