  1. I hate to say this, but 1800 calories a day is too much unless you are doing really strenuous exercising. I can maintain my 150 plus pound weight loss at about 1000 to 1200 calories a day, and I currently weight about 160, I am 67 years old and have had no skin removal. My doctors feel that if I did, I would be around 145 to 150. But I need new knees and there is no way I am going to have more elective surgery. But If I eat 1800 calories a day, I gain weight. Fast. Like in a couple days. And yes, there IS more restriction in eating chicken, and fish and other meats. I eat more cheese and dairy than I probably should. But it works for me. I also eat eggs. I make sure at least 2 meals a day have a simple protein like eggs, or chicken or fish, and the occasional beef meal. I happen not to eat shellfish or pork. If I have oatmeal for breakfast, I make sure to have a yogurt for a midmorning snack. I eat few processed carbs and keep my pasta, rice or bread to very very low amounts. Protein, vegetables, fresh fruits. This morning I am having my coffee then, fresh watermelon and scrambled eggs with some shredded cheese. Get back to basics and re check with your doctor or nutritionist about calories. Frankly I rarely if ever count calories; but I know what I am eating and what I can eat to maintain my weight loss.     July 2023 buddies

    Hi all, New to the forum and have been feeling a bit overwhelmed at times with all the info I found on my google searches I get sleeve surgery on July 4th! I am equal parts excited for the new journey and scared for what is ahead. I have yo-yo'd for years and like other posters here I like to follow a food plan but do wish others would give it to me rather than the handout I got from the hospital with a sample of a one liquid soup recipe and a list of food groups. I do well with lists and instructions (yes, I am a bit of a control freak) so it is the unknown that freaks me out the most. I have tried to do some food prep but find it all a bit overwhelming. For who I have told, it has just been my Mum (though I presume she told me Dad ), my two sisters, my boss (to discuss time off work) and three friends. I don't want to say it at work in advance but figure I will have to say it when I get back to the office after a month off 'sick'. Also my new eating and drinking habits will be noticeable in a small office. The clinic here that I go to haven't given me any pre-op advice on cutting down on foods in advance so I decided as of June 1st to give up alcohol for the month in advance so it is not too much of shock post-op. I am not an alcoholic but I do love a glass of wine (or 2) in the evening or a cocktail (or 4) on an evening out and a lot of my social life revolves around drinking with colleagues & friends so I think going forward that may be hard. I am trying my best to make healthy choices for food in the run up to the op, but again as a control freak, I would have preferred that the clinic gave me strict instructions to follow in the lead up to surgery. I know my faults (when it comes to food ) are that a lot of the time I eat too quickly, without even noticing, and I eat too much and often don't know/realise I am full so I am really hoping I find the transition to slow and mindful eating goes smoothly. For me, my weight has caused considerable knee pain and starting to cause ankle pain but then it is a vicious circle as they are too sore to do much to help me loose weight. I am hoping the op will make it easier on my knees to walk comfortably and eventually take up exercise. I know I need a knee replacement but the ortho surgeon said my knees were too fat for him to be comfortable in carrying out a successful op so that is my longer goal, as well as weight loss and being health to have bionic knees

    I just had my surgery a months ago at 69. According to my doc at my check up , I'm losing weight at the normal speed. Hopefully it will keep going ! I was happy to read all the above comments - it keeps me hopeful

  5. Because addiction isn’t cured…it’s always there and always will be. The strength of its grip can vary, but it’s never gone. Addiction is also sneaky…you may think it’s gone until you gain back weight and wonder how that happened. Then ask about “pouch resets”, or injectable drugs. Make sense? There is no alternative, you just need to accept it and deal with it as best you can. Find support and explore the reasons. Again, I believe this is THE biggest issue people miss in this journey and what leads to most failures.

    Bad taste in mouth/disgusted with good?

    It’s not uncommon for our tastebuds &/or sense of smell to temporarily change making foods we used to like taste disgusting. It can also make foods we used to dislike yummy. Also ketosis (fat burning) can cause a foul taste in our mouths. Also causes bad breath, and other bodily secretions to smell unpleasant, and flu like symptoms (keto flu). It will pass. No timeline as to when though just when your body is ready. Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    My Gastric Sleeve Journey

    So close now! And yes there are countless people who've lost an incredible amount of weight with a gastric sleeve. I personally believe the majority of us will succeed with any procedure if we stick to the guidelines given to us and are truly mindful of what we eat. I think tracking our intake is so important as it keeps us accountable. I hope the remaining days until surgery go smoothly and I can't wait to follow your journey.

    SO MANY QUESTIONS

    I never once had acid reflux before my sleeve and I had to get revised for severe gerd. If you are already on omeprazole, then you are probably more likely than not to have to get a revision to rny in the future. I'm not a doctor so I can be wrong. RNY is an extremely safe procedure these days. I wish I didn't put it off as long as I did. My revision was the best thing I have ever done. It fixed all my problems from the sleeve and more. I'm in the minority who had vsg problems. Most do not. But since my revision, I have never felt so normal. Not normal WLS normal but before any surgery normal. There only thing I have to do is wear a Vitamin Patch every day and take 1 or 2 tsp of Miralax in my coffee. It's been wonderful. As far as mindset throughout the process, I always felt relieved, happy, lucky that I had WLS surgery. I would have done almost anything to get the weight off. Before WLS, I was miserable and sick due to the excess weight. It was only challenging when I had severe gerd and esophagitis but even then I was happy with my weight loss and always always always found it worth it.

    i had my surgery over 4.5 years ago when i was 46 (yes, not quite 50, but still). while i was not quite menopausal, i was definitely peri-menopausal. i lost more than goal by 7 months post op: to that, while i can't quite comment on how menopause may affect weight loss, based on my own personal experience, i can submit MY own account on how menopause affected MAINTENANCE. its been over a year since my last period (im 50 now) - which i guess officially makes me menopausal - i haven't been "regular" for over 2 yrs), and so far has not affected weight (so far! *crosses fingers*) i have been more or less the same weight (give or take 5lbs) since stabilizing about 4 years ago. i think alot of how menopause will affect u is genetic and quite individualized. i have ZERO menopause symptoms. and according to my mom, it was the same for her. you may luck out, you may not. only time will tell. with that said, menopause does not mean weight loss and maintenance is unattainable. you may have to work a little harder than those who are unaffected, but it CAN be done. good luck and enjoy the ride! ❤️
  12. Have recently taken a comprehensive nutrition class. I am 5.5 years out of sleeve and have maintained my loss. I wish I had taken a decent nutrition class in my teens or 20's. Not a *weight loss* nutrition class...but a general nutrition class where you learn to read labels, learn about dietary effects on disease processes, aging, inflamation. I had no idea how ignorant I was about the different kinds of fat, the effects of sodium and refined sugar, appropriate portions, recommended fiber and its effect on propogating good gut microorganisms, malnutrition in fat people, ect. I learned a tremendous amount in class about so many blind spots and feel so much more informed to make better dietary choices. I highly recommend a good general nutrition course for folks starting out in this process.

    The line that stuck with you...

    GOOD: All of the other great apes eat their sugar with lots of fiber. They rarely eat meat, they eat lots of plant fats, and eat tons of fruit, figs, and unrefined carbs. They don't keep livestock, milk cows, or eat cheese. Over 90% of their diets are plants, fruits, palm nuts. BAD: Eat your children's vitamin for dessert. Fruit is pure sugar and should be avoided. You should only eat protein and non starchy veggies! Also... GOOD: Nearly everyone with morbid obesity suffers from food addiction. They deal with the constant stress and background noise of food, hunger and craving..... in a ways that people of typical weights don't. Obesity has a tremendous psychological component that must be understood for longterm success. BAD: Trade one form of obsessive disordered eating for another if you want to be successful.

    Usually they let you. When they don’t automatically, I pull the manager aside and explain I had weight loss surgery. Never had a problem.
  15. You’ve just had a pretty major surgery & aren’t eating very much so feeling lethargic & low in energy is to be expected. As your body recovers & heals & you start to eat a more balanced diet & more than just fluids & purées, you’ll start to feel better. you may have odd times after when your energy drops a little as your body gets used to the changes. Like @ms.sss, I don’t think I’m quite as strong as I used to be. I seem to hit my wall a little sooner too. But I know I used to push myself to do more (carry more, lift more, work harder & longer, take in. more responsibilities, etc.) to prove my weight wasn’t limiting me in any way. I might just be more conscious of what I actually & reasonably can or can’t do now

    Menopause is what did me in too. I went from my usual lifelong range of 60-75kgs to suddenly being 91kg. It was like I woke up one day & there was the weight. Tried to unsuccessfully move it for a couple of years & decided surgery was my only option. I’m almost 58 & still have menopausal symptoms even on HRT. (Actually the estrogen flush we have while we’re losing actually stopped my menopausal symptoms. They came back once I got to goal though. ☹️) So losing your weight & maintaining is still possible. Don’t worry too much about doing ‘enough’ exercise. It only contributes to about 10% of your weight loss & I didn’t do any formal exercise while I was losing. Just was more active in my everyday life. Like stairs not lifts or escalators, park further away from where you’re going, make multiple trips up & down my stairs instead of only one or two trips, etc. Of course there are lots of other benefits to being active. I too found tea easiest to drink. I still have a large mug (about 400ml) of green tea every day. You’ll get your fluid up. Try drinking during the night as well. Sip every time you get up to pee. I still do this to push me up & over my goal. Looks like you’ve got a good handle on your protein so we’ll done. And congrats with your weight loss so far too.

    Hi @bluemather! Congratulations on all the achievements. I'll have to try the peanut butter to see if it curbs my appetite. Thanks for the tip. As far as the loose skin, I'm with you; I'm not looking forward to that, either. But I'll take it if it means I drop this weight. Keep rocking it! 🙌

    I’m 53 and sleeve surgery date was 1/9/23 so about 5 months post op. So far lost 78 lbs with a few stalls along the way. Longest was 3 weeks (painful wait!). Weight loss has slowed down some but still consistently 2 lbs week sometimes more. I average 900 calories per day and goal of 80 grams protein sometimes I hit more. My doc suggested I increase protein intake and fluids. I never miss fluids 64-70 oz day. I’ve found my meals are pretty consistent and predictable and honestly don’t stray too far in my choices yet. I’m full at 5oz but can eat 6oz. Anything over that in one sitting is too much. I don’t really snack and just eat 3 meals a day. My one concession is 1/2 TBS peanut butter in late evening when I start to feel hungry before bed. Nice treat and curbs the hunger. I have another 70 lbs to lose and look forward to the day when I can eat 1200 calories a day! It’s a journey but feeling great. The biggest bummer is sagging skin and a sad reminder of how I got here in the first place. I’m sure changes in our hormones affect the swings of weight loss along the way but overall I’m convinced we just need to stay the course and it will fall off.
  19. i think most people (most, not all), are pretty run down and tired after surgery. i was dead man walking for about 2-3 weeks immediately after surgey, and just weak-man walking for the next few months after that. it does get better once you start eating more. worth noting that i'm 4.5+ years out, and i still don't think im as "strong" as i used to be pre-wls: opening jars and lifting every day things are just harder to do now. of course, i'm over 1/2 the weight/size i used to be, so i that explains some of that. hang in there ❤️

    I dont have a 'good' but 'bad' was Slimming world, they said I could eat as much rice, pasta and noodles as I wanted and I did. Then later on down the line the woman said you must be eating the wrong foods, you are not loosing weight. I followed that diet religiously, it broke my heart all those weeks not loosing and not knowing why

    Thank you Arabesque! I kind of get in my head at times because i really think menopause did a number on me as far as weight gain and inability to lose it on my own without surgery. I know everyone is different and we should not compare the rate or amount of weight loss to others. I just wonder at some point if menopause will interfere with the amount of weight i am able to lose as it seems my hormones seem to be sabotaging me as far as hot flashes, etc. My "banana" was born on 4/12/23 and I've lost 37 lbs. I suppose not bad for 2 months. I average 400-500 calories a day. I get about 60g of protein per day. I will be honest and say i don't exercise as much as i should. Water is hard for me to drink the amount you are supposed to so i did switch to decaf black tea with splenda and of course that is easier for me to drink more of it but still dont think i'm getting the 64oz of liquid.

  24. It's great you have your pcp psychiatrist support. There are a few different type of RNY revision. What procedure are having? Did you stretch your pouch? The reason I'm asking is because my aunt regained all her weight back and more after 10 years post RNY. She had it evaluated and her pouch was still tiny and didn't stretch. She had learned to eat around it, and drank with her meals too, hence they didn't want to do a revision. They told her she would lose 10 to 15% max and it wouldn't be worth it especially since her health isn't very good. I am still going hoping she can get the help she needs because all her comorbities have come back. I have tried to help her go back to basics but unfortunately she can't stop snacking. She is seeing a doctor and psychiatrist to help her.
