Any other Vegetarian banders out there?

You have a right not to eat meat. What would he say if you couldn't for religious reasons? Some doctors don't take vegetarianism seriously and think we want to eat meat deep down and that it would be easy to do. I haven't eaten meat for 18 years and I will never eat it. My banding dietician does not recommend limiting carbs. There are a couple of at-goal bandsters here who didn't cut out carbs. There is another thread on here where I have posted a million (vegan) Protein ideas. Do a search for vegan/vegetarian and you'll find it. Otherwise I'll look it up later. I am a vegan BTW. I saw the dietician today and she was very happy with my choices. I don't want to say ignore you doctor but insist on the fact that you are a vegetarian. If he can't help you with food choices, he should refer you to someone who can.
  2. I am still on protein shakes until November 12, then mushies for 2 weeks. After that my doctor wants me on protien but no carbs. He is not thrilled with the idea of tofu or beans. Any suggestions out there.
  3. Hi, :wave:I'm in Seaton Delaval, just outside Newcastle Upon Tyne in the North of England (although I am originally from Portsmouth in Hampshire). I'm scheduled to have a lap band fitted on 17th December by Mr Woodcock at North Tyneside General Hospital (paid for by the NHS - only 6 weeks and 6 days to go). Mr Woodcock told me that I had to lose weight before he would fit the band so I have lost 75 lbs since May this year (2007) through a sensible balanced diet and lots of exercise. I am really worried about how to eat after the surgery. I have been on a diet for so long that I don't know how to eat normal diet foods any more. I am a vegetarian too. Do you just eat very small amounts of normal food? What is normal food? If I eat tiny portions of the kinds of food I have been eating whilst losing the 75 lbs I will only be eating about 600 calories (maybe less) per day. Is that OK? I am full of trepidation. This is a really big step and I wouldn't be taking it if it were not the very last resort. I really believe that I need this provedure. It's not that I can't lose weight (I've just lost 75 lbs) but I just cannot eep the weight off - which is why I have been offered a lap band rather than a bypass. Any information or advice you could offer would be gratefully accepted.

    lap band or bypass?

Oh, so you wanted to know what the people who are at goal did to get there? Personally, I am a fairly strict Vegetarian, eat organic and unprocessed foods as often as I can, walk everywhere I can, run 5km a day and do strength training 3 days a week. Sorry if I misunderstood your question!

I don't understand (goal weight rant)

I think you would have to ask the OP if this thread was inspired by you, because I don't know. I know that MY part in this thread has been inspired by all the mean spirited people who have taken great pains to tell me I am skinny, anorexic, ugly and nasty. And I am not sure what the point in posting the content of that thread was. My point there, as it is here is, as much as people don't like being called fat, I don't like being called skinny, and scrawny. And let me tell you, when you pick my weight, or dress size, and say that at your height (which is the same as mine) you would look scrawny and skinny, it tends to give the impression that you are talking about me. I am sorry that if by saying whatever I am you think I am saying that you are falling short (I have no idea what I did to give the impression I think that by not being super skinny people are falling short, I never actually used that expression till just now...) See, I have no freaking idea where you get the idea that I think I have to be super skinny. Just because my weight is not one you could imagine on yourself, doesn't mean that I am unhealthy. And that is what pissed me off. The fact that it is just assumed that if someone is under a particular weight, that they are at deaths door. It's not the case. I just came in from an 8km run, am eating a huge bowl of oats, and have a banana to eat after that. I eat, probably more than a lot of bandsters around here, and if I was as sickly as my weight is portrayed to be by some people, I would be hooked up to an IV, not out running, and about to eat more than some people do in a day!! I eat the way I do (vegetarian and organic) because I feel almost super human when I do. I exercise the way I do, because it adds to the way I feel. I am alive. I feel better than most people could ever imagine, and the way I look, is just a very nice side effect. The way I eat and exercise is not driven by a need to be skinny, its driven by a need to be healthy. And I hate having to explain myself.

    I need some guidance.

Hi everyone! Ok, I have a problem and I wanted to see what you guys thought. I got banded at the end of Sept 06, starting at 252 lbs. It is now the end of Oct 07 and I have only lost 55 lbs. I got my first fill in Nov of 06. I was so busy between school, work, and moving that I got my second fill in the end of Aug, just a few months ago. Since then, I have lost only 2 lbs. I'm so discouraged. I know I should have gotten my fills when I plateaued (um, I don't know, like a year ago!) but I was so busy. I only stay full for about 3 hours. I was a vegetarian for 5 years, and I know protein is a huge factor in losing weight. I just started eating lean cuts of chicken and turkey to help me but nothing is working. I work out for at least an hour each day, I stick to my diet and nothing helps. I feel like I wasted my first (and most important year). I guess my question is- should I get another fill? My band is at 2cc's. What do you think? Thank you, -Royce

    My 1st Fill!

Update: Today is the 3rd day after my fill and I definitely still feel some restriction. Yesterday we had a party at my house, so I snacked a little (grapes, strawberry) and for dinner we had roast pork. I started eating some pork, yummmy, then ate a little more (About 1.5 oz in total) Once the pork hit, I got this feeling of sudden fullness and a sharp pain in my chest. I stopped eating immediately and about 5 minutes later the discomfort passed. Also, I have been pretty much a vegetarian for the last 3 years. However, I am finding it difficult to stay away from carbs without eating at least some meat (there's only so many eggs I can eat!). So I started eating a little meat again.
  8. Thanks lizrbit I'm a vegetarian - so this rules lots of things out. I had not thought of veggie bullion DOH! The clear is for immediately post op until I can go onto mushy. Juices are good, its just others seem to be having lots of jello etc. So I've been on semi Optifast for the two weeks, it didn't need to be strict, so I've had opti 1 or 2 per day and a salad or veggies etc for the other meal. Thanks for the suggestions

    Does Lapband= nonfat/lowfat?

It's an interesting issue. I've talked with bandsters who do their loss by the band's portion control only. I've talked with folks who believe banding whould also include a diet...I've met vegetarian bandsters.....Especially after about 8 months of banding, there's a lot of variety in bandsters. I've personally developed a very strict healthy diet when I'm at home, and whenever I eat out, I allow myself whatever, and rely on portion control alone. I'm happy with that. Here's what I believe: 1. At the beginning follow whatever your doctor says. You will have lots of adjusting to do in your new life, and it is best to follow the program, at the very least until you get your bearings, good restriction, etc. 2. Weight loss is usually faster during the first year of banding, so it's a good idea to optimize your weight loss, building in an exercise lifestyle and as strict a regime as you can. 3. If you're comfy with Atkins, that's great! Eat your protein and your vege and then other things if you have room. It's the way to get enough protein. But remember that being banded doesn't mean a steak won't clog your arteries. So to the extent that you are in this for health, think about building in lower fat protein sources. Frankly, your band may help you....some of your foods that you used to love may not be interesting after banding. I used to love shrimp, but I'm one of those people who can't get it through the band well...some can and some can't....and shrimp just became a food that wasn't worth the effort. And oddly, I don't miss shrimp. Think about it this way....If you eat according to plan, and you want to lose between .5 and 2 pounds a week, you may find that you count calories and as weight loss stops, you may drop your calorie intake by 100-200 calories to accomplish it...or you may count fat intake and keep it under a certain level. I found whenever I hit a plateau, I counted protein, calories, and fat intake for 3 days and it gave me a wakeup call about what I had allowed to sneak back into my mouth. We obese have been good at deceiving ourselves about what we eat! I guess the bottom line is that it's a long haul journey and not a sprint, and you'll evolve through many stages based on everything from persanal preference to weight loss goals...so at first as a newbie, follow your doc. Enjoy the learning curve!
  10. Actually I posted a question whether spicy foods are okay as I love them. So far, I haven't had any problems but I had my 1st fill yesterday and haven't had rice since. I did eat about 1/2 of a vegetarian pizza and I kept waiting to fill full but never really did.
  11. Hi everyone thanks for the repsonses. I am lacto-ovo vegetarian so I eat eggs and drink milk, but stay away from any kind of meat. Thanks for the recommendation on the book, Margie. I will buy it this weekend! I think that I will have to just make protein bars a staple for when I travel. Wheetsin, you are right, European pizza is way better for you than American pizza. The pizza I was eating was whole grain, very very thin crust and not greasy like American pizza. I was in Finland and if I was not veg, I would try the kebab (I see the signs everywhere!).

    Going vegetarian? Or low meat?

I buy smoky-flavored tofu at Wild Oats. During the pureed-food stage I blended Bush vegetarian baked Beans with barbeque sauce and I loved it. Later I tried it with the whole beans, but it didn't seem as tasty. If I liked to cook I would make dal, an Indian lentil dish. I do make a big pot of vegetarian chili (lots of beans) every so often and love coming home to a hearty meal that I can heat up in the microwave. I am usually really hungry when I come home and want to attack the easiest thing available. I love leftovers!
  13. you definitely need to be eating more protein. Try packing things like nuts and peanut butter crackers. String Cheese, yogurt. Eat more fruit and try to lay off the pizza. After a fill, pizza may not be an option anymore. Good luck travelling must be hard especially since you are vegetarian. Your not vegan are you?
  14. Hi, Just wondering how many of you frequently travel for work or personal and how you deal with sticking to the diet/protein when traveling? I travel for work quite a bit and I'm ok to focus on eating right and protein when I travel within the U.S. However, International travel is really hard for me. First of all, I don't do protein shakes, bc it is not easy to find milk. I am on the go a lot. and I hate water with my protein shake. Second, I am a really picky eater and eat vegetarian, so I end up eating a lot of salad and pizza (gasp) (bc pizza is internationally the same pretty much anywhere). I am in Europe this week and this is my diet every day: breakfast: water Lunch: salad Dinner: pizza I am soo good at home. Travelin always gets me. Also, will I not have this problem when I get a fill?!!:help:

    Sorry You Did it?

I'm very glad that I did it. I have never experienced any difficulties or had many eating limitations. I prefer to only have light restriction because I want to be sure that I can meet my nutritional needs and not end up feeling really deprived. In fact, vegetables are the only foods that my band has problems with (but I am vegetarian). The difference with the band for me is mostly psychological. It keeps me motivated because I know that I can always get more restriction if I lose my focus and start to regain. Knowing that I have a tool to keep the weight off makes all the difference. We have another June bandster, Faithmd, who has never had a fill and yet has lost something like 80 pounds. That is why I love the band--you can manage it any way that it works for you.

    lap band cookbook

That would be wonderful! I don't think a nutritionist would need to oversee it, necessarily, as long as we made sure that all the submissions were either healthy or band-friendly (and maybe labeled the recipes that aren't really "every day" meals). Maybe have a few different sections, like one for tofu/vegetarian meals, one for red meat, one for chicken/turkey, one for fish, etc?
  17. Well, I actually lost a pound after chasing that cow with a fork and knife at my mom's...gawd, I could never be a vegetarian! Get home tonight, had roasted chicken, gnocchi, and veggies~ but, good grief, I am able to put down WAY MORE than the first two weeks, but about 1/2 of pre banding days...I am going to have to start being real careful here, and I hope my first fill clamps down on when I get full! Please tell me it will~ Just so I make it official: RR, Oct. 15th.... who's in?? Please, please if you can make it to both meetings, please do so we can all be graced with each other's presence...it means a lot! I am going to try and attach a pic of Kat and I..you have probably read lots of her posts on the board hopefully, next pic, I will actually look like I have lost weight!
  18. Anyone else thinking of doing that? meat is getting pretty expensive (especially when you consider how much I waste), and I'm always paranoid about how well I cook it when I cook for just myself (for some reason, I'm not paranoid about it when I cook for other people) and wind up over cooking it, which isn't band-friendly. I'm trying to get to where I eat more vegetables and non-meat Protein like Beans and tofu. I'm not super-fond of the flavor of beans, but I don't have to worry about getting sick if I undercook them. And on the upside, I don't really have to worry about overeating with them, either, since they aren't exactly something I love, just something that I know I can eat. I still love meat, especially a very good steak, but I think I'm going to start limiting it to restaurants.
  19. Cow cow, you might want to read the rest of the thread.... Indigo-The band made it poossible for me to make good choices. I never could before. Things that were impossible are just hard work now. I can live with that. TNNurse: Regarding the protein-Think about this too. Solid Protein helps you feel fuller longer. So it's perfect for the band. My Dr said to eat the protein first, then the veges, and then if there's room, eat a carb or fruit. If you really hate meats, you might want to go to the vegetarian threads and ask them how they keep that full feeling with the band. It's funny....my sugar craving is only present when I don't follow the program. If I'm getting my calories at my protein rich meals, I don't crave. If I skip calories, I want to fill in with easy old ice cream.
  20. I have so many of these stories, I don't even know where to start. haha. When I was about 20, my grandma decided she wanted to buy clothes for me and my cousin for Christmas AND that meant she had to measure us. I was dreading it. My cousin was probably about a size 3 at the time. I was about a size 18/20. After she finished measuring me, she said "Well for someone who is as big as a cow, you have good measurements since there is 10 inches between your waist and hips." Right in front of my skinny cousin. Niiiiicccceeee. Then again my grandma isn't known for her tact, therefore she knows nothing of me being banded. A couple of years ago I had to have an ingrown toenail removed and so went to see the podiatrist. He asked me if I'd ever been any smaller than I was (size 24 at the time) and I said yes I'd been much smaller at one time. He said "Wow you must have really been a knockout. Such a shame. You have a pretty face. You should try to get small again." WTF?? He was supposed to be looking at my TOE!! What the heck did how I look have anything to do with it? Geez. I had a (now ex) best friend who was obsessed with talking about people's weight and how HUGE they were and I'd see them and they were smaller than me. Gee thanks. I found out from another friend that she'd said behind my back that I'd just given up and let myself go and didn't care what I looked like any more. That really hurt. I was a vegetarian for several years and when I was in high school I once had a guy ask me how I could be a vegetarian and still be so fat. I was only 165 lbs at the time anyway but I pointed out to him that vegetarians do eat more than just bean sprouts and carrots.

    Any Vegetarian Banders?

I finally feel like I am in a group that I can really relate to. I am vegan because I lost no weight on the Standard American Diet. I try to eat often and I drink carrot juice twice a day with my essential oils and only juice veggies sometimes I put an apple into the juicing to cater to a sweet tooth. I was told not to juice and as a result did not get in the veggies my body needed and eating meat did not go down none of it. Up went my cholesterol and my lipids sooooooo drastic action was needed. I have a normal cholesterol and normal lipids. Fortune is with me because my general practioner is vegetarian since 1973. So far since May 25th 2007 up to now I have lost 30 pounds. Two years I did not lose more than five pounds since my banding. Going vegan is what helped me get more nutrition and weight loss. I eat 85% raw and 15% cooked vegetables.

    Any Vegetarian Banders?

Coo -- I am vegetarian and have been for about 15 years. I have had the band for 2 years and have found that it can be a learning experience to figure out what you can and cannot tolerate. I love love love green Beans, but can only eat them cooked to near-mush on a Tuesday when there is no clouds in the sky and in February. It can be somewhat frustrating at first when you are not sure and what went down fine one day gives you trouble for the next two weeks. I have found that when I find a period that I can eat green beans, I tend to eat them and only them for two days straight. By then, I am so sick of green beans that I don't want to eat them again for several months. Betsy -- I tried going vegan for about 6 months in the beginning but I am so picky that I got horribly sick. ITA with Wheetsin that the "hidden" animal products are really really surprising. Most of my Protein comes from dairy so I have a hard time when I cut those down.

Ix there a link you could provide me that shows nutritional guidelines for vegetarians? No sure whether I want to go vegan. I love my egg white omlettes!

15 bean soup / Morningstar Farms

I'm really hoping that I'll like it, so that I could make that and have a bunch of ready-made meals. I'm not fond of cooking meat when I'm at home. I'm lazy about cooking unless I happen to be cooking for several people. Plus, cooking for just myself makes me paranoid about the doneness of the meat, so I don't enjoy eating it. Sometimes, I really think that I could easily become a vegetarian.

    June 2007 Bandsters

I do not get the amount of protien that I probably should either. My nutritionist told me that I should try to get about 40 grams of protien. She said that with the amount of food I am able to eat, that it will not be feasable to get much more than the 40 grams. I doubt I even get that much. I have always said I could be a vegetarian. I do not really care for meat and never have. I think for me, the important thing is to learn how to eat sensibly. If I could get my on 600 calories a day and stick with it, than I would not have had the surgery. I admire those of you who can do it, but I know it is not for me. I want to learn how to eat right, and not restrict myself from a normal diet. I don't know if I am making sense or not, but hope you guys understand how I feel. I just want to do this right. I don't want to fail on yet another diet.
