  1. Hello! My name is Meagan, I'm 34 new! I've struggled with my weight since...well...pretty much as long as I can remember. I've always been plus size but was an athlete in high school so I was really fit and toned at 150lbs, but would still dread going clothes shopping because 9/10 times it resulted in me crying in the dressing room. Since HS, its been a non-stop struggle to lose weight. I've tried every diet there is to try, gym memberships, work outs, trainers, medical fitness programs, supplements. You name it, I've tried it. Not only am I dealing with genetics (my paternal side of the family is very much overweight and has a host of medical problems because of it) but I also was diagnosed with depression and anxiety about 10 years ago. My current weight is the largest I've been at 265. I'm tired, y'all. I'm tired of working so hard, of following the meal plans and doing the work outs and seeing zero results. I've always struggled with my self esteem because of my weight and this past year it hit an all time low. I started to research bariatric surgery options a few weeks ago and am ready to start the process. However, I just found out that surgery is not covered by my insurance (through my job) and the bariatric program I want to go through, requires insurance before I can start the program. What insurance company have you all seen that covers surgery? Supplemental plans? Help.

    June Surgeries

Yes I think it finally clicked for me today, and I felt absolutely terrified and alone. Had to pull myself together and distract myself a bit.. starting 10 day milk diet tomorrow. Pray for me haha
  3. I am having a different kind of abdominal pain in the last day or so near the biggest incision. Everything looks normal, it feels like soreness under the skin, like a dull pain. It's not very strong pain, 2/10, but it's different from what I was experiencing before (tearing/burning feeling around the incision when I made some movements but not this dull feeling). Almost feels like a muscle strain or something and it's freaking me out. I was thinking it could be gas but it's just on the right side of my abdomen. Is that something any of you experienced?

    Any March Surgeries?

I wish I had suggestions but sadly I don’t. I’m 10 weeks post op and I have zero hunger and zero desire to eat. I’m eating very little. I often wonder if my surgeon removed 99% of my stomach instead of the 75-80% LOL. If I approach 2-3 oz of food at a sitting, I can feel it in my chest and stomach. So I simply stop eating. I’m not getting in the protein that they recommend so I’m trying to work on that. Of the many things I’ve learned throughout this entire process, the one that sticks out the most is that everybody’s journey and situation is unique. My only suggestion is simply Just try your best to stick to the plan. I know you’ve heard that a million times but I think it’s the best course of action. Good luck!
  5. I'm almost 10 months post-op and am down about 80# give or take, which is 30# from my goal. I was stuck at about 163 for several months and am still struggling to get enough protein in. I've been in contact with my RD and she suggested smaller, more frequent meals to try to get closer to my daily protein goal. The problem is, I'm finding that since following this routine, I'm gaining weight and am now up to 169. I reached out to her again, and she is now suggesting adding a low-dose Rx med to the mix. I'm not sure how I feel about this. She wants me to eat more small, frequent, protein-packed meals yet is suggesting an appetite suppressant? Doesn't make sense to me. I've tried things like Builders Bars and can't finish one in one sitting. I've added Unjury Protein Powder to things like cottage cheese, yogurt & salsa, but that's only 22g - IF I can get the whole scoop in one day. I snack on stuff like string cheese (9g protein), but it's not enough. I walk 2 miles daily and am taking up swimming next week. I'm starting to feel like I'm never going to get over this hump. Anyone else ever been in this conundrum? On the bright side, my hair has stopped falling out and is growing back!
  6. Coming up on 2 years post op and life has never been better. The gastric sleeve opened up a world to me that i thought would never exist. Ive learned so much about health, nutrition and exercise, that i wouldnt have if i didnt take the first step with the sleeve. I have a healthy relationship with foods now. I try to keep myself to the 80/20 rule. But i probably am closer to 90/10. Make good choices 80% of the time, and enjoy some of my favorite things the other times. Its funny tho, a lot of my favorites have no become healthy choices. So that makes life easier. I started this journey first just focusing on losing the weight. So for the first year i ran a lot and set a goal to run a half marathon. i completed that last may and then began to switch my focus to putting on muscle. This was hard because it meant i had to up my calories which for anyone in our situation, is a scary thing. So i bought a WHOOP strap and really dialed in how many calories i was burning and spoke with my nutritionist about a plan to get where i wanted to go. (whoop strap is apparently the most accurate fitness tracker out right now and ive found that my apple watch says i burn 800 more calories then the whoop says. just a heads up. IT wasnt easy but ive been doing it and got on a great routine. My lowest weight was 208. i now hover between 225-230. i weigh every few weeks but dont get too obsessed with the scale anymore. i know that if i stay within my calories that im fine. Its been a process and i had to learn a lot. it wasnt all easy but 110% worth it. This surgery opened a whole new life for me. I am extremely greatful.
  7. after 10 years I still avoid a lot of breads, pizza, French fries, any dry meat I only eat ribeye steak , hamburger tends to be difficult again has to be a good cut of meat. sometimes its the combination of foods like I have to be careful with meat and mashed potatoes. or a tomatoes sandwich with mayo something about the consistency doesn't work. watermelon can also be tricky i can have it but nothing else with it.

5 year post gastric bypass weight gain

lots of people have gone through that (luckily, I only have 10 lbs that I'd like to re-lose, but even that's been a bear!!). Are you still tracking your food intake? If not, I'd start there. And go back to following the rules - as in eating the way we were supposed to be eating once we were a few months out - focusing on protein and non-starchy vegetables, with an occasional small serving of fruit or whole-grain carb. if you're a calorie counter, then track what you're eating now (without making major changes yet) for a couple of weeks to figure out what your average daily calorie intake is. Then cut back by 100 calories or so for a couple of weeks. If that's not working, then cut by another 100 calories. Rinse and repeat until the scale starts heading downward. But know that with only 35 lbs to lose, that scale is going to move pretty slowly. You could also try drastically increasing your activity instead - or in addition - to cutting calories, although that method is usually a lot slower. a lot of people have had luck with formal programs like Weight Watchers, Keto, or intermittent fasting - so those are options as well... good luck with it - it's not easy, although it's good you're catching it now while it's still not really out of control!

    How do you Cope?

I go for a walk or a car ride with my dog. I go to this website every day. Sometimes to comment but a lot of times I just like to read what others have to say. I do crosswords. Watch YouTube videos. Listen to music. Read books. Now that it is finally getting hot, I will be spending a lot of time in my parents pool. They only live 10 minutes away. I love to organize, label, clean out closets, etc. My hubby doesn't like it when I do it because I am always getting rid of stuff. LOL For 2 months I raked my entire yard and burned leaves. I have an acre of land and did it all myself. It was very hard work, but I loved it. It kept me busy, gave me exercise and now my yard looks awesome. Now I can to start decorating outside.

What's your best post op advice?

It’s going to be hard. Very hard in fact. Make sure you absolutely want to do it. You will most likely have regrets shortly after surgery. You can’t know everything beforehand. You can only prepare so much. Having said that, if you really want to make a lifestyle change and can handle the mental battle, it will absolutely be worth it. I agree with the others, your journey will be unique. I’m only 10 weeks post op and it took me until about 2 weeks ago to stop regretting it. I just focused on day to day. I’m still never hungry, I have no desire to eat, I don’t get all my protein in each day but I’ve learned how to create a routine. As mentioned, everybody is unique. I think it’s important for people considering this to know that it’s not easy. It might be the hardest thing you’ll ever do. At least mentally. But as they say, the things most worth achieving are also the most difficult. Good luck should you choose this surgery.
  12. I’ve been hearing different things like: you lose slower or you may not lose at all. I’m 9 days out and I lost 10 so far but I know of some friends who’ve lost 20 within the first week. So question for revisions from sleeve to RNY, How long did it take you to lose the weight you wanted?

    Big belly

waiting a year is a good idea - sometimes things shift around and you start looking a lot better. Plus many of us gain 10-20 lbs after hitting our lowest weight, unfortunately. Although not everyone would agree with me, it's probably good to have plastic surgery when your weight has more-or-less stabilized.
  14. Hello - I’m new here and am thankful for the great info on this site. I’m considering WLS and am wondering if my BMI is not high enough (heaven knows I don’t want it to get higher). I am 37, 5’2”, 190 pounds (BMI 34.7 so just below the 35 mark). I seem to put on about 5-10 pounds every few months. I have to take 4 medications to control my blood pressure, have pain in my feet, ankles and right knee. I think I actually waddle when I walk and that’s obscene. I just learned I also have high cholesterol and I snore really badly. I have been overweight and steadily gaining for about 10 years despite numerous diets, pills, subscriptions, memberships. I am tired of feeling bad in my own skin, and am embarrassed that I now cannot comfortably cross my legs, tie my shoes comfortably, take the stairs without being winded, etc. My weight is also now affecting my career as I have been told that leaders “look a certain way” and “have a certain physical presence.” I think these are coded statements about my weight. I also cannot participate in one of my favorite activities (horseback riding) because I am embarrassed about my weight and worried about being too big for my horse. I am motivated for a big change in my life, but also scared about post op meal planning and having to make my entire life revolve around food planning. I feel like for so long I have counted calories, carbs, macros, steps, activity with varied results, and all I want is to be free, healthy, and balanced in my body without thinking about food for every hour of every day. I am willing to pay out of pocket, and have reached out for a consultation locally. I guess I just wanted to say hello to this community and hear your stories if you have been in a similar place.

Is my weight loss okay or slow?

we normally just see big losses the first month, because that's mostly water. And by "big loss", for most of us, that means 15-25 lbs (there are some who have bigger drops than that, but unless they're the size of people on "My 600 lb Life", it's not that common). after the first month, a loss of 10 lbs a month (again, for the average WLS patient - NOT the people on TV) is pretty normal. so in other words, you're fine.
  16. Best thing.....NO MORE ACID REFLUX Worst thing.....Dumping Surgery 10/29/2020 @ 187 lbs. Weight loss since surgery..... 52 lbs. That's also a BEST THING! Since my surgery was for the stomach/esophagus issues, the weight loss has been a bonus! After the sleeve, I had a banana sized stomach. Now I have a golf ball sized stomach. The remainder of my stomach and my duodenum (upper most part of my upper intestine) is still inside, the duodenum is just connected further down into my ilium (lowest part of the upper intestine). So in the revision, nothing is taken out like with the sleeve. The digestive track is just rerouted to bypass the stomach and duodenum. I hope that makes sense.

    Southern Cali Kaiser Permanente

Hello ladies, I am also with Kaiser Options program and I am about to finish my 10 week classes this June 4th. Unfortunetly, my Vitamin D labs came back low at 22 and it needs to be at around 30. So I have beem prescribed some vitamin d and need to recheck labs after 6 weeks. This will be delaying my process. 😔 I am doing my options program through the Downey, CA location and we were not told anything about a psych evaluation so not sure if every location is different. I was told once the labs are rechecked in 5 more weeks to be exact, I will be scheduled for a physical examination, then see a Bariatric surgeon to talk about which surgery option, and finally be scheduled for surgery. Hopefully it does not take a long time. 🤞. We were suppose to get labs at week 3 of the classes in case anything came abnormal, but mine were not orderes until week 7 so that is why everything for me is getting delayed. Also, the ekg had to be done at week 3 for same reason. Luckily mine was normal. Good luck to you ladies!
  18. Hello there! I am Jayla and new here. Age 34, 5'3 Hw 392 CW 290 I have roux en y surgery on June 3rd. After a ton of set backs 3 years of work to get surgery I am finally approved and getting surgery in 3 days. Long story sorry! I quit smoking for 2 years before trying to get surgery back in 2019 then lost my insurance and got delayed. After getting back into program in January of 2020 I started smoking during covid when I got a divorce. I quit 10 days before my nicotine test and surgeon meeting etc for insurance approval all went great.... Well... my surgery got delayed again do to the prior authorization team not sending things correctly and requiring an appeal and resubmisson again. Delayed another 4 months until June 3rd. I started smoking again after having a child like idiot temper tantrum moment when this happened. Not my finest decision obviously I know that. I know smoking is bad and bad for surgery. Last detail is that I have asthma and super allergies in the spring and fall that make me have very bad post nasal drip and mucus. I normally go on prednisone to help... well cannot take them anymore... and if you don't know quitting smoking creates even more of this post nasal drip... resulting in tight tubed and feeling of drowning so I was struggling to immediately quit again. At my pre-op exam the doctor conversed with my pcp on a plan to have me quit smoking 2 days before surgery on a cut down regimine while taking antihistamines and said it should be fine. My surgeon of course did not want me on any nicotine for a few weeks prior to surgery. I am worried he will cancel on surgery day even if this was advised by my pcp and pre-surgical exam doctor. Has anyone ever passed the first nicotine test but failed on surgery day? What happened? Do they always again test on surgery day? Is it a blood or urine test? Any tips for passing or how to handle this? Thank you all for your time and consideration. I really would rather not postpone due to a flub on my part when I have been so successful in my journey already.
  19. I am over 10 years post gastric sleeve. I waited for my *** to do the sleeve vs an RNY because of medication I need to take orally and was not recommended to have the RNY. Weight loss surgery was the BEST THING I have ever done for myself. I was in my mid 50s. 5'3 and 320 pounds when I started. I lost a few pounds before I went in to start !!! I am now 65 years old. I lost 145 pounds. Yes, I am still overweight - but I lost 145 pounds. I work full time, have the same career for 40 years. I am active, I garden and keep chickens for fresh eggs, grow organic fruit and veggies. I rake and hoe and walk and am more active NOW at 65 then I was at 40. NOT one regret at all. Also, I eat beef on occasion; when I want to. And I eat chocolate every darn day. Mind you - not a lot. I have learned the value of a really good piece of chocolate. No hershey bars here. But a lovely piece of dove chocolate ? YUM. I re-learned how to feed my body. Protein and fresh veggies and fresh fruits. Healthy fats, and keep my carbs down. Instead of a "rice bowl" think of it as a chicken and veggie bowl. I might sprinkle rice on top as a garnish !!! Move your mindset to "HEALTHY". I went from a 4x plus size to wearing a 14/16 petite. I am thrilled. My doctors are thrilled. Find the RIGHT support team. Start with supportive doctors. Best Wishes.

    July 2020 WLS Veterans

Hi Julie and you others, I got my band in May 2012. It worked fine, got down from 285 the day of surgery to 240, then stalled. A few years later tried phentermine, which helped me lose more, for one day in August 2019 I crossed from obese to overweight! Currently back up to 235, having lots of reflux. Just had a total unfill and orders to get an upper GI. I want revision to bypass but we’ll see. I miss the “old gang”, B52, gowalking, jfc193, jim1967, carolinagirl, and 2muchfun.

    June Surgeries

I am doing a 3 week liquid diet too. It starts tomorrow. I have to be under a certain weight by June 15th, so I am just starting it a little early (my surgery is scheduled for the 21st). My daughters are freaking out about the idea of a liquid diet and my husband is worried that I will be hangry all the time, which surprisingly makes me less worried and more focused because someone has got to keep it together - lol! I do plan to have my three allowed protein shakes a day, as these are the only things of substance I am allowed to have, and treat them like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Congratulations on the weight loss - that is 10 pounds you do not have to worry about after surgery! I am hoping for the same!
  22. Hi everyone, I had my lap band installed on May 21, 2012. Starting weight was 293, was 285 the day of surgery, got down to around 240, stayed there a while, then started phentermine which helped me lose more. For a single day in August of 2019 I crossed from obese to overweight and am now back up to 235. Recently, whatever I ate got stuck and had to be “ejected” after which I could resume eating. Along with this came an increase in reflux, to the point of having stomach acid in my mouth a few times. Saw the NP, she suggested unfilling the band, getting an upper GI and seeing where to go after that. I am reluctant to refill the band because I fear the reflux will return. I want to get a revision to sleeve or bypass; thinking bypass would have less chance of reflux returning. I wish I’d gotten bypass in the first place but thought the band was safer. I’d be grateful for any advice anyone cares to offer. Thanks!
  23. oh my goodness - yesterday was a big NSV for me - I went on a 10 mile bike ride! I still can't believe I rode that far! My legs were jelly at the end and I am sore today, but it was soooooo fun! Being on my bike makes me feel like a happy kid.

    Some happy raves:)

My current obsessions are chia pudding and homemade sugar-free gummy bears. I love making different flavors of chia pudding; my favorites are chocolate raspberry (tastes like brownie batter!) and pumpkin spice. I never knew how easy it is to make homemade gummy bears -- just some gelatin and flavoring (either 2 packs unflavored gelatin + 1 single-serve sugar-free drink mix, or one unflavored gelatin + 1 flavored gelatin; I've also made them with real lemon juice and lime juice). I bought some gummy bear molds on Amazon, and voila: sugar-free gummy bears that don't cause diarrhea. I also recently discovered Skinny Girl salad dressings. They're fat-free, sugar-free, and 10-15 calories for 2 tbsp. I've tried balsamic vinaigrette, roasted garlic vinaigrette, poppyseed, buttermilk ranch, and honey dijon, and I love them all.
