  1. As you found out, the programs endorsed by different surgeons vary greatly. The programs are guidelines, they will not work for everyone. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all M.O. Def speak to your nutritionist, though in the end, whatever he/she advises you to do may still not work for YOU. Best course of action is trial and error on your part (keeping in mind any advice your NUT gives you). Now is the time to get to know your body and it's responses to different stimuli. Then go from there. Further, what works for you today may not work for you tomorrow. Its an ongoing learning process. Good Luck! ❤️ Oh, and yeah, i hit "overload" many times during weight loss phase. Honestly, i still do sometimes, and i'm 4.5+ years out.

    Let's Collect Some Data!

This is a great idea but would love to see one more category added. The different bariatric procedures can greatly effect the rate of loss due to levels of restriction, absorption, etc. 1. Basics: GENDER, AGE (at time of surgery) , HEIGHT - F, 62, 5'5" 2. Total Weight lost in the 6 months BEFORE surgery (if any) - 6.5 LBS 3. Weight on DAY OF SURGERY. - 202.5 LBS 4. Weight at 1 MONTH POST surgery - 187.4 LBS 5. Weight at 3 MONTHs POST surgery - 170.8 LBS 6. Weight at 6 MONTHs POST surgery - TBD 7. Weight at 12 MONTHs POST surgery - TBD I had my VSG surgery on 3/3/23 have just hit my 4 month post-op. I currently weigh 162.4 for a total loss of 40.1 LBS in 4 months.
  3. Things have been going pretty smoothly since bypass surgery June 6. The stages from the surgeon and nutritionalist seem fairly accelerated (compared to others I've looked up in the Internet). I would have a bowl of cream of wheat (3/4 cup of water) or a single egg omelet (adding some cooked mushrooms or shredded smoked salmon). All fine. The canned vegetables are pretty insipid but I don't feel like I'm ready for "raw" veggies and overcooked veggies (steamed) are kinda like the canned stuff- To celebrate my passage into regular food, I took a smoked turkey leg, reheated it, then stripped all skin and tendons off, leaving me with 1/2-3/4 cup of shredded meat. It was too much! I discovered what you folks call the "foamies"-- horrible. If I could have just puked and emptied my stomach, I would have been happy, but oh, no, all that came up was that dreaded froth. I was in major discomfort for hours and wound up falling asleep sitting up. Next day, I decided to go back to basics- just protein drink, Gatorade Zero, a little hummus and 1/2 my usual portion of cream of wheat. I'm now setting up a call with the nutritionist- interestingly, his plan disclaims any recommended portion size. And when I've looked at the internet, every plan is different, with different ranges of portions. I feel much better having gotten through that experience of foamies- whether it was the density of the meat, the quantity, or the smoked flavor, I have no idea but I'm gonna stay away from smoked meats, at least for now. Because I had a hiatal hernia repair, any sort of heavy lifting, sit-ups, etc. are taboo. I am walking (ironically, the mega grocery stores provide me with a venue for that since here in Texas, it's been over 100 degrees F until a couple days ago. Typical Texas summer). So, two questions: 1.portion size- we'll see what the nutritionist says; and 2.did most of you hit overload at some point on your journey? I have been losing weight. I definitely look and feel better, easier to walk without getting winded, etc. My best to all, Deep6

    DS Buddies Wanted - 26 Y/O

I understand the pain of trying to find a surgeon! I've been trying for the last two years to find a surgeon that would even touch me because I'm not actually having the DS done for weight loss (Although that is a really amazing benefit of it) I had a Nissen fundoplication done in 2005 that has failed and no surgeon wants to revise another's work here locally, so I'm going back and forth 5.5 hours each way to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. So I have a huge learning curve as this wasn't even something I thought was an option until my doctor told me it was his plan to fix me so that I'd have a chance at normalcy again. I'm just looking forward to being able to eat something with flavor. Everything gives me heartburn at this point (including certain brands of bottled water) it's nuts. I basically eat potato soup every day because I know it's something I can handle. I'm hopeful as we get closer and I learn more. But I have also come to the conclusion that some of this will just be embracing the suck.
  5. Hey guys, Apologies for not updating this thread. I've been personally struggling with this weight loss despite everything. I've lost a bit more weight, but even with the help of the dietician, the weight loss is incredibly slow and it's still making me feel like a failure. On average it seems like I lose about 3 pounds a month despite the high protein intake, small meals, liquids and exercise. Today I woke up feeling particularly upset, as I started a 4 mile walking challenge to see if I could walk four miles every day for a week (in the morning). Today is Wednesday (day 3) and before i started walking, I decided to weigh myself. I've put on 2 and a half pounds since this SATURDAY just gone! I weighed myself yesterday morning too and I've put on a pound since then. I won't lie. I just burst into tears. I feel like i've been doing everything right. I'm burning around 3500 calories a day, according to my Fitbit watch. I'm eating/drinking between 50-80g of protein. I'm drinking my 2 liters of liquids and I'm still eating from a side plate, always prioritizing the protein first. I'm doing everything, but I feel like my body is rebelling against me. Everything in my being is telling me to start fasting and to start doing liquid diets/slimfast shakes again, but because I have a history of eating disorders, I don't want to lean back into old habits in order to lose weight. I bought slimfast meals two weeks and did the liquid diet/pouch reset for two days and lost a pound and a half - but I don't want to rely on only having liquids in order to lose weight. I've been loitering between 243-240lbs for over a MONTH now with no budge. I'm so disappointed in myself and it feels like all the exercise i'm doing is in vain. Has anyone gone through similar? Edited to add: My goal weight is 215lbs. Being bigger/curvy runs in my family, and I actually like being a little bigger as I find curves attractive so I purposely did not want to be unrealistic when setting my final goal. I've read elsewhere on the forum that weight loss can be harder when you're getting nearer to your goal or when you're in the last 20-30lbs of weight loss. Is this true?

Ah, man, I'm sorry... Plenty of people lose a lot of weight with the sleeve. I hope they can get everything figured out for you.

    January 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello everyone! Where are my January 2022 Surgery Buddies? I'm just checking in with all of you! How is everyone doing? I've lost 75 lbs so far, so I'm super proud. I want to lose another 25 lbs and then I will be satisfied. Although, I have to admit, if I would not lose any more weight, I would still be happy with how I am now. I feel good and when I look at myself, I "look good" and healthy. So in my book, I'm already a winner! I've never been so happy! The only regret I have is not doing this sooner! Check in and tell us how you are doing!
  8. I am 58 years old and I have Afib, I also had rheumatic fever when I was a teenager and I have some valve issues. I am a diabetic ( or was ), and wear a CPAP. I had my surgery on 6/5/23. Within a day from the surgery I stopped taking the diabetes medication (after 15 years). I keep checking my blood sugar, and everything is perfect. I have no idea why and how this happened. My CPAP pressure decreased, they told me at the hospital that eventually I will no longer need the CPAP machine. I had no Afib episodes since the surgery. The gastric bypass requires a lifelong commitment of multivitamins, minerals and nutrients due to malabsorption. I tried about 8 separate diets prior to committing to this surgery and I always gained back the weight. The education I received prior to the gastric bypass at Mayo Clinic explained why we always gain the weight back when dieting. I have no issues with the microbiome, I take pre and probiotics daily. I think that this surgery is the best decision of my life and the best thing I could have done for my heart. I knew that this will be so when a doctor told me the same thing years ago, that he got the gastric bypass and it was the best thing he did for himself in his entire life. It is a tough decision and a life commitment but the benefits exceed the struggles. I was like you, I doubted my decision until the morning of the surgery. I am really happy that I went through with it!

  11. I bought my first pair of jeans in over a decade and am wearing them. And I know I'm supposed to be happy, but all I see is the fat bulging beneath the fabric. I feel like a disgusting freak with a huge, pendulous stomach and fat, but disproportionately small legs.

I don't look "great". I look disgusting. I'm just smaller, with fat still dripping down over every inch of me.

This is supposed to be my end point from my highest weight and I cannot live like this.

    Getting plastics tomorrow!

i had swelling up until maybe 6-7 (maybe 8??) months post plastics. i don't think anybody noticed but me though i don't remember if Chivers told me how long to wear the binder! (seems like ages ago). But i did wear it (or a faja) basically 24/7 for well over 6 months, only because i really liked wearing it, lol! i still wore it pretty regularly almost every day for several hours a day for another 6-12 months after that. it was weird, i felt like i was "spilling out" if i didn't have anything tight over my surgery sites 🤷🏻‍♀️ ...not that i actually was, it just felt that way and i didn't like the sensation. hence the long-term wearing. sometimes i still strap it on in the morning if i wake up with an achy back from sleeping wrong. PRO tip: before i got my faja, i wore TWO binders cuz wearing only one was difficult to pull tight enough evenly over both my waist and my hips....so i cinched one over my hips/lower abdomen, which resulted in a not-as-snug fit at my waist, and then a second one over the first to target just the waist. bonus is that wearing 2 stops them from riding up. also doubles as a weight belt when working out. also makes your waist look tiny when wearing it! 😂 How are u doing, BTW? are u pleased with ur results so far????

  14. I was post menopausal for my bypass. Two of my friends had sleeves with the purpose of having good health and getting pregnant. They both had had issues with PICOS and “advanced age” , over 35. One got pregnant through IVF and had a healthy girl who was born deaf, but has warmly knitted our community closer by making us all learn sign language. The mother regained her weight, BUT the dad had bypass recently and is quickly regaining his health. This family also celebrated HIGHLY the adoption of a daughter prior to the birth. Isn’t that how it always happens? I’m going to say, build your family the way it happens and don’t worry about it. I knew a single guy who worried about never having kids of his own, and his sister and brother-in-law died from a freak plane accident leaving him with two nephews to raise!!! The second mother successfully had her baby girl (she may be younger but I’m not going to ask) the “normal “ way. She did regain after the 3 yr mark, but quickly got back to track using hot yoga and a new business she started. Everybody retained their good health. Isn’t this about health and creating family? It’s going to happen one way or another, watch and see, worrying won’t make it better. GBY
  15. yes, age at time of surgery! and yes, want to know how much weight lost (if any) in the 6 months prior to surgery Thanks!

    Nicotine testing

My doc did not test me at all. If your doctor insist on testing you over 'nicotine' or 'thc' it is NONE of their business and if need to get this surgery but can not quit you do not give up your surgery. You can easily buy a bottle of fake urine on the internet just google it. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL unless you are trying to use it to pass law enforcement it is NOT against the law to buy a bottle warm it up and just dump it in the cup instead on your own urine for the test. they can not watch you in the bathroom so that is all you do and you get this weight of and get this surgery NO MATTER WHAT. much love
  20. thanks! do you know what your weight was at 1 Month post-op?

Treating saggy skin on the face

I'm starting targeted C02 Cryo therapy next week. A friend runs the business and wants to document my progress for advertising to local bariatric patients so she's offering it free to me. Otherwise, it's pretty pricey. I still have a ways to go with my weight loss, but she wants to treat me as I lose instead of waiting to see how much loose skin I'm left with at goal weight. Despite the cost, people are willing to pay. She can't keep up with demand and recently had to hire a second tech. The before and after pictures that I've seen are amazing. Face , batwings, tummy etc. I'm willing to give it a go. Hopefully with good results.

    Disappointed

honestly, weight loss is really more about the person vs the type of surgery. you as an individual will likely lose the same amount of weight no matter which wls you choose. do the best that you can and you will get where your effort will take you ❤️ for what it's worth, i had the sleeve and lost everything that i wanted to. and i believe i would've got to the same place eventually if i had bypass or ds or whatever**. **Edited to add: except maybe the lapband... P.S. hope all goes well with you from here in out ❤️

    Disappointed

First off, hugs to you—. I am sorry this happened to you, but also want to assure you that this is really not a set back. It’s a step forward— and like others said before, it is good they found the issue now so you can get ahead of it if it something to be concerned about. I have the sleeve, and so far it has been VERY successful for me. No GERD, no dumping, nothing— and the weight is coming off. The first three days after any surgery are HARD- but I promise you it does get better. My thoughts—Use the tool you have today to get to the next chapter of your journey, then if you need the DS and qualify, you can make that decision then. We are rooting for you!

    Disappointed

I'm so sorry this happened, let yourself grieve a little but please don't let it over burden you. Each WLS offers the opportunity to change your weight and life enormously. Do the right things and success will follow. Sleeves work for thousands of people. My fingers are crossed that there is no cancer.

    May 2023 surgeries

It's going great. Meeting or exceeding all my goals. I'm down 50lbs since the preop diet, maybe more. We've been on vacation and my scale is all over the place when I use it on the RV floor. I can move it 3 times and it reads 3 different weights, so I need to find a good solid surface to get a more accurate reading. What I am struggling most with is getting exercise in. We walk most days, but I'm still really weak from years of neglect and need to add strength training. Here are my preop and 2 month post op pictures. Hope everyone is doing well!
