What kind of problems? People generally don't get long-term complications from sleeves. It's not like RnY where people get reactive hypoglycemia and have to have part of their pancreas removed to fix it or get ulcers from the surgery that have to be treated. It's even very unlikely that the sleeve would stretch enough to require a fix. If you mean, what if I don't lose all the weight, it would depend on how little I had lost. If I was 10-20 lb more than I wanted to be, I'd lump it. If it was a significant amount, I would get some kind of intestinal bypass, either RnY or DS. I don't know which one because I haven't looked into the nitty gritty details of either. I'd probably go for a DS but I'm not sure I could eat enough fat to make it work. (I don't like greasy food.) I doubt I would put a band over it because the odds are just too high that I'd have to have yet another surgery to remove it some day and be right back where I started. Plus, the only thing a band would fix is if the sleeve had somehow stretched and was too big and you can fix that by having it tightened instead. Not to mention it rarely happens -- you really have to abuse the thing to get it to stretch. I don't know where you heard that people are putting bands over VSG. I don't know anyone who has done that -- it really hasn't been around long enough to know a lot of people who had revisions. Most VSGers will get a DS if they have inadequate weight loss because they figure they need the malabsorption after all. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com

I'm not a revision patient, but just wanted to say that as long as you keep on top of taking your vitamins, deficiencies are pretty rare. There are some people whose bodies don't absorb oral iron well who have to get occasional iron infusions, but most of us absorb it just fine. Otherwise, I really don't hear about deficiencies except for people who don't keep on top of their vitamins. I don't think that lack-of-restriction thing is universal. It probably depends on the person.

I am new to this site as I am getting ready to have the bypass. I have had the band for 3 years, and have had many complications and little weight loss. My surgeon recommended I have the bypass, so here I am! Could anyone give me some feedback about their revisions? I am much more nervous for this surgery then I was for the band!! I would enjoy hearing others' experiences. Thanks!

Band to Bypass Revision Success for Super Obese?

Band to Bypass Revision Success for Super Obese?
Daenerys Targaryen posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I currently weigh 405 lbs. I was banded in 2008 and lost 90 lbs the first year, but anytime I would get a fill my reflux would land me in the hospital with aspiration pneumonia due to reflux in my sleep. So I have been unfilled since 2009 after I decided I was done being hospitalized from band fills. All the weight came back and I am back to where I started at 405. I am currently working towards a revision to gastric bypass. I have so much to lose. I see all kinds of stories of people losing over 200 lbs with the bypass, but I have yet to run across a story of someone losing that much that was a revision from lapband. I have googled and googled but can't find a story of anyone losing several hundred as a revision. So please, if you or anyone you know has been a lapband revision that lost 200+ lbs, I would greatly appreciate the encouragement. I just need to hear that it can be done. -
normal not to be overly nervous?
BlondeBanshee replied to truck8595's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have surgery in the 20th in Mexico with Dr. Q at Santa Fe Medical Clinic. Thanks to this forum and a support group on FB, I have no fear! I am SO STOKED!!! I only learned of the VGS about a month ago, as soon as I learned about it I said yes! I feel so lucky not to have pursued the lap band! Dr.Q won't even do them anymore. He is so busy doing revisions. The sleeve seems to be so effective! I am ready!!! And hungry! Guess it's Soup time. -
anyone opt for a low profile port ?
jigglebutt1 replied to jigglebutt1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually requested the low profile and initially my dr said they use then for revisions w/tummy tucks. After we discussed it further, we decided the low profile was a good option. My nurse actually said it was a great idea because I was so small-HA! small! It does seem like they prefer the regular port cuz it is quicker for them to access. They will actually have to feel around for mine. If I can possibly-I want to avoid a tummy tuck. -
I had my revision too and with I had never had the band!! Good luck to you!!

Revision?
MichiganChic replied to prettyMe2716's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
How many calories per day are you eating? I learned I have to eat around 800/day to lose. I still find that to be absurd and almost unbelievable, but it's my truth. And while it's good and recommended to exercise, it's had minimal impact on my weight loss. One other thing - my surgeon won't do revisions for people who don't lose, or lose and gain weight back. He says its not going to help. But,yes, you are in control of you, and you CAN do this! -
I am another one with bypass and don't dump for foods that should trigger it. It comes down to me not eating something simply because I shouldn't not because I can. Unfortunately, there are a lot of foods that I should be able to eat and can't so a revision isn't necessarily your answer to your situation. Keep your eye and mind on the journey!

Need Advice for Weight Loss Surgery
Travelher replied to hollyrose062's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Let me start with saying the band is the MOST invasive surgery, not the least because the complication rate is so high (around 50%) that you could require more surgeries...that is my definition of pretty invasive. I can can post a link to a whole host of those studies if you would like, I had to have my band removed and revised to rny. I chose rny because it is the gold standard been around for decades and proven to work. Sleeve hasn't been around for 10 years yet, so after my mistake of using the band when it was still new...wasn't gonna do that again. Also I developed acid reflux from the band and I knew the sleeve could make it worse and rny often cures it. Also I liked the extra insurance with malabsorption...most sleevers don't dump, the majority of rnyers do with the rny. I liked that it was insurance should I make bad food choice. I don't ever plan have another bariatric surgery. Both sleeve and rny require additional Vitamins. I like the Patches..easy to use and don't know they are there. Having said all this the sleeve is getting close to the 10 year mark and looking like a good alternative to rny. It was my backup if the band had done too much damage and an rny couldn't be done. -

coops replied to bandtoVSG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hiya bandtoVSG... You sound really frustrated!! can you give us any further details, starting weight sleeve, how much you want to lose etc I know it is frustrating when the scales doesn't move... have you tried to shake things upa little... drink more Water? Vary your exercise... that type of thing? There is a five day pouch test that you might be interested in. It sorta re kicks the restriction, I did it once and I found it really helpful! there are a few revisions on here who might be able to help you... hopefully they will give you some good advise. -
Can anyone else eat a good amount of food at a month out??
Rev Me Up! replied to Hip's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Short answer - I can't eat that much. I am also a band revision, so we may have some similar issues. I'm not sure how far out from surgery you are... I am 2 months out and I can eat somewhere between 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup of food at each sitting - I can't really eat 1/2 a cup, but I can eat just a little more than 1/4 cup. Soft foods are more comfortable to eat, and I can eat more of them. It takes me between 5 and 20 minutes to eat my food. At 20 minutes, I am stuffed with the measurements I mentioned above. Examples of what fills me up: one scrambled egg with 1/4 piece of whole grain toast - VERY full 4 small pita crackers with flax seed with a Trader Joes mini-brie bite broken in 4 pieces - comfortably satisfied one packet of plain organic oatmeal with flax - sometimes i finish it, sometimes i don't. VERY full. My mothers Day treat: a quarter of a patty melt on rye - STUFFED. I eat about 6 times a day in order to get to 600-800 calories, I really have to work pretty hard to eat that much. Sounds like my capacity is less than yours, but your mileage may vary. My basic measure is that I can eat about 4-5 bites of anything and that's it. If I don't stop, I am VERY uncomfortable. I never drink within and hour after I eat. I have stopped counting my calories because I am consistenly eating the same things every day and I average about 100 to 150 per meal. I only lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, but I am a low BMI revision and I don't expect to lose faster. Ultimately, eating 1000 cals a day will not leave you in a stall forever. Having one day where you over-indulge is not the worst thing in the world. We all do it. Lara -
I actually just had port revision surgery the day before yesterday. I had no indication that it had flipped, no pain or anything. I went in to get my second fill and it had completely flipped. It was not even accessible under floro, so if I wanted fills, I had no choice but to have the surgery. The doctor said it wasn't caused by anything I did or didn't do. It just happens sometimes, although I was his first patient to have one. As far as the surgery, it is not that big of a deal. Especially not compared to the original band surgery. I admit, I am pretty sore right now, but I am back to work and the soreness is manageable.

Im hungry. I do a shake and an hour and half later I'm starving. My blood sugar is also getting really low which makes me hungry. I believe I'm going to have to back off the diabetes meds now. I meet with the surgeon tomorrow to sign consents...and I BET I haven't lost any weight. I feel bloated and TMI I'm PMSing. Not a good time to get on the scale. Maybe he won't be too upset. I'm not having surgery til June so that gives me some time to loose some weight. They said to shoot for 10lbs. Just enough to get my liver in shape apparently. I would, however, like to loose more pre-op. Rant over Hi! May I suggest some strategies for this PreOP step? First of all, you are trying to shrink your liver. Dr told me not to worry about losing at this point, just get 60-80g Protein in each day and to avoid carbs and sugars, but drink lots of Water. I use Propel, and Powerade Zero to fill in between my bottled water, and am getting about 64-70 oz in daily. I have lost some weight without trying. I started at 223, 218 when I got my PreOP diet, and am now at 215. I suppose I will be about 210 at surgery. I would make sf Jello, put your nonfat cot cheese in it--tastes great with lime, cherry, orange, etc. I also got sf popsicles, and also eat lean fish and chicken. I did eat a burger patty tonite and blotted all the fats away from it. I put some plain horseradish on it. I use pepper to flavor with. My protein supplements are Premier and Muscle Milk light that I got at costco. Those taste very good. You mix with water the Muscle Milk. I got Premier premixed shakes to carry with me when I am out on errands, etc. I try to vary what I eat as much as I can to break the monotony of the diet. As is, the diet is cut and dry. Mine is revision surgery, so am being extra careful with this and the whole phase of my journey. If you are low in sugars, do not take any more pills or insulin as that would just make you drop dangerously low. Also, make sure you take your vitamins--a multi, Calcium, B12 sublinguals, vit D3(this absorbs the calcium). My thinking is you may not be getting enough liquid in your diet. I hope this helps! Good luck!

2week vs 1 week pre op liquid diet
rsr53 replied to A New Me's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor is doing the same thing with me. I have a list of things I can choose along with my Protein shakes. I usually do 2 shakes a day and eat from my list the rest of the time. Yes, and drink LOTS of Water. Mine is revision surgery so the liver shrinking is important. I have 13 days to go before surgery--can't wait! From what I have gathered, it does depend on your surgeon. I will have to do a 2 week liquid diet - but during that 2 weeks I can also have some "real" food - I get to choose 6 items from a list they will give me. I was told they do this to help shrink the liver (or the fat around the liver) so it makes it easier for the surgeon to move it out of the way when they do the surgery. It's also a good way to start practicing for how you eat after the surgery. -

How do you deal with no drinks during eating?
RestlessMonkey replied to a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Actually as a native Texan and one who grew up on the border I can tell you the cure to hot salsa is salt! No kidding. Of course, not so good if you retain Water and are supposed to watch your salt, but it works. My surgeon used to say no drinking during or 1 hour after but has since revised that to 15 minutes before, all during, and 15 minutes after. Meals are to take no longer than 30 minutes. I've tried eating without drinking and it isn't really bad. I agree with the poster who said you taste your food more! -
6 months post RNY, mixed feelings/results
Roggr replied to bostonmama's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Do not blame your food cravings on emotional issues, Bostonmama. A good non-surgeon bariatric specialist can evaluate to see if medications or surgery revision is needed. Please do not beat yourself up for the cravings. Your struggles may be as much physiological as psychological and can be addressed by the right medical specialist. Yes, see a nutritionist and psychologist but there are a lot of experienced, talented obesity specialist medical doctors in the Boston area. -
Finally have my surgery date for SIPS/Loop DS
GigiNFortWorth posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Excited but nervous! I will be having a revision from the sleeve to the Loop/SIPS. My surgeon will be removing my gall bladder, fixing my hernia and then doing the Loop DS. Has anyone had all 3 of these done together? It just seems like so much! Thanks! 😊 -
My story from lap band to gastric bypass
shedo82773 replied to ShrinkingMeme's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Shrinkingmeme, That darn Lap Band!! My hubby had his for 13 years, which was in the year of 2000. He did lose 100#'s but he is a Large man. He started out at 520#'s so we had expected a lot more of a loss. When he went in for his fill the nurse damaged his port. First let me say his Dr at the time said he wasn't strong enough for the RNY which was what he wanted and needed. She also used a VANGAURD BAND ( he was the first man in Oregon to get one) it was a BIG lap band. So he never lost any more weight and it came to be that he couldn't eat or drink and hold anything down. The VA sent him to a Dr in Coos Bay Oregon to empty his band. Then he tried to refill it but couldn't. He was scheduled for a revision to the RNY. When they got in there the band had eroded into his liver and he had to much scar tissue to be able to do the RNY. They did remove his band and his Gallbladder. He told him that after he healed for 3 months they could go back in for the RNY. Well he developed abcesses bad He was so sick he almost died. He was sick for 9 months and 3 of them he doesn't even remember!! Fast forward to him trying to get the Dr in Coos Bay to get the RNY well he told us he wouldn't do the surgery because he was such a problem child, but he referred him to OREGON HEALTH AND SCIENCE they told him they would do it if he got his A1C down below 8. And lose 20#'s. Well I don't know if you are familiar with Diabetes but if his blood sugar is down his weight is up so he just couldn't get it done. So we went to Mexico June 3 when that Dr opened him up his whole right side was solid scar tissue from his band and other surgery so they did the Sleeve on him. He isn't losing his weight easily for sure. He has lost 60#'s now. I had the RNY and lost all of my weight in 6 months which was 124#'s. I think people should be compensated or at least Dr's should have to make it right!!! I have heard that the FDA may be pulling them off the market and there are a lot of Dr's that don't even do them anymore. It makes me so mad that so many people have suffered because of the Lap Band!! Good luck on your Journey's!! -
I also had my gall bladder removed and a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time I had my revision done. It was a piece of cake - sorry - I mean it went as smooth as a cup of low-fat yogurt - ha! It was really no worse at all than when I had my band done. I'm sure you'll do great. Congrats on your surgery date!

Hi, I got my approval for revision to the sleeve today from my doctor's office. I am going from RNY to sleeve. I had my bypass 10 yrs ago. The pouch stretched about 80% and of course my weight came back. I have health restrictions due to severe allergies to alot of drugs that are common pills for high blood pressure. When I got my bypass, they took my gall bladder and repaired a huge hiatal hernia at the same time. I did not have discomfort whatsoever. Mine was open incision, but I suppose if you get laproscopic surgery the healing won't be too bad. I remember my drain tube for the gall bladder surgery part took longer to heal. Post op, I felt soooo much better--I had severe anemia 3 mos prior to surgery that the bypass saved me. Keep us posted--you will be in good care--try not to worry! rsr53 I got my approval letter in the mail yesterday for my revision. I will have the band to VSG and gall bladder surgery at the same time. I know several here have also had that surgery and would appreciate any advice you have. I am a little nervous about surgery but know that is normal. When I get really nervous I say to myself," you are going to have surgery no matter what because the gall bladder has to come out. this is just a little more." Seems to work a little. Is there a great deal more pain associated with gall bladder removal? Cathy
