  1. yes - I'd also suggest you post on the duodenal switch forums, since SADI is a version of that. Even traditional DS is a pretty uncommon surgery, so I don't know if you'll find many people on the general threads who'll know how to respond to that. Sorry this is happening to you - this sounds miserable! P.S. you may want to post over at Obesity Help, too - I think there are more DS'ers over there (that site in general is much less active than this one, but they do have more DS people over there, from what I can tell. Also, you may want to check out some of the DS groups on Facebook. In general I can't recommend FB groups for bariatric patients because so many of them have bad info that never gets corrected, but then again, the DS community is pretty small, so you may find people on them who can address your issue)
  2. it's a known issue, but it seems to be pretty uncommon. My dentist had read about it in the professional (dental) literature, but he'd never actually seen it in any of his patients who've had WLS. But no, since I personally haven't had issues with it, I've never mentioned it to my bariatric surgeon or dietitian. But i'm sure they know it happens to some people.
  3. I just got the special toothpaste, and believe I had been on Biotine for several years until the surgery, then wondered if I should stay on it, so I stopped. But yes, I also have dry mouth, I think from my pravastatin for cholesterol? Iโ€™ve been on that for so long I donโ€™t remember why anymore but that sounded good....lol thank you for telling me about that, because I thought it sounded really strange, but now I see itโ€™s not so strange! Did you tell your Bariatric surgeon or the dietician? They should warn people about that! Thanks again for answering my message topic!
  4. Greetings to everyone, On May 2, 2016, I received my VSG from my Bariatric Surgeon. Fast forward to February 2019, I start getting experiencing abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting that my general GI specialist couldnโ€™t figure out what was wrong with me. Diagnostic testing revealed a raw sore in my esophagus, a hiatal hernia, and the medical professionals couldnโ€™t diagnose why I was experiencing abdominal pain in my gut. As time moved on, my aforementioned symptoms got worse and worse where I couldnโ€™t keep down my food and medications. Now jump to March 10, 2021, I have my first surgical consultation with the Bariatric Surgeon that had put in my VSG in 2016. My Bariatric Surgeon recommended a revision from the VSG to RYGB to fix my hiatal hernia and the rest of my digestive symptoms. Dr. Chen has fast tracked my RYGB surgery to Monday, March 22, 2021. I have to admit to everyone that in 2016 when I the VSG, I was fine with it. However, now with the RYGB surgery within 48 hours of this posting in the BariatricPal forum, Iโ€™m getting nervous to having this surgery. One of the main reasons why Iโ€™m nervous is about having the RYGB surgery is the possibility of complications and after having surgery, and the dumping syndrome that seems to be common with a lot of individuals who get the RYGB surgery. Fortunately for me, while I was recovering from the VSG, I was not subjected to dumping syndrome. Can anybody share with me about your own experiences with getting the RYGB surgery? How was your recovery period? How was it going from a clear liquid diet to a full liquid diet to purรฉe foods, etc. Share your thoughts and feedback. I would greatly appreciate that very much.

    WLS Veteran Back for Support

Hang in there, there's lots of us vets here who struggled with regain and DID battle back. Get back to the basics, use the support and assistance your PCP offers. I found a bariatric support group far from my town, where they didn't know me, and began attending there. It really helped too. But, in these days of COVID I'm sure the in-person support groups are numbered. Lots of us 'old' vets still around here too. We'll help all we can.
  6. Congratulations on your weight loss and journey to becoming a healthier YOU! I think you should reevaluate your definition of โ€œfriendโ€ because the people you described in your post are anything but that! Keep working towards the person YOU want to be. I attend weekly therapy sessions and we discuss a lot of coping skills so maybe some ongoing therapy with someone who is experienced with bariatric patients will help some. ๐Ÿ’• **sorry I read through the comments and realized everyone has already said similar things about your โ€œfriendsโ€ and counseling! Hang in there! You got this ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ

WLS Veteran is back and looking for support

It absolutely can be done! Please consider adding visits with a bariatric therapist to your tool box. For me, this was as important a tool...as the surgery itself. Maybe moreso. Self sabotaging behaviors always have a cause....and learning to see that cause and get ahead of it made all the difference in the world to my maintenance. Everyone should read posts like yours to realize this is a lifelong battle. The surgery doesn't "cure" the condition.
  8. I happen to love the Bariatric Advantage chewables and hand haven't tried anything else since I discovered them. I particularly like the grape ones. I also use their chewable calcium. As you said, they are like Starburst--and they are honestly sort of a treat every morning!

Rant re: chairs in the doctors office

Oh man, I noticed at my doctors office that they had only armless chairs and benches, probably for this very reason. But my surgeon was at a bariatric clinic where he sees pretty much exclusively overweight people so I guess thatโ€™s to be expected. Fitting in chairs now is a huge victory for me- an average person out there will never understand โ€œconstant chair worryโ€ but I love not having it anymore!

    Bariatric Vitamins...What are you taking??

I take: Bariatric Choice One daily multivitamin with iron Kirkland Signature Vitamin D3 Nature Made Super B energy complex Celebrate calcium chews I got the sleeve. Had my 3 month labs done recently and Iโ€™m doing great on all levels, even running a little high on vitamin D so I could potentially cut that back to every other day if I wanted. The pills are super easy to take, no problems or concerns, and the price is pretty darn reasonable. When I run out of the calcium chews Iโ€™m thinking Iโ€™m going to cut the Kirkland signature calcium tablets in half (theyโ€™re pretty big) to sub for those.
  11. It was days. I actually had my gallbladder out in January 2020. That surgeon recommended wls at my follow up appointment which was at the end of February. As I was driving home from the appt. that day, the bariatric surgeon's office that he referred me to called to schedule my consult appt. I saw that doctor at the beginning of March 2020 but then COVID happened and the hospital let him go, and I ended up going with a different surgeon at a different hospital. Purรฉe diet is NOT fun

check out this blog. She's a long-time vet and has been really active in the bariatric community for the last several years. She's is (or was) on the board of the Obesity Action Coalition, for one -- was also very active on internet forums at one time (may have been on BP at one time, too - I can't remember other than she used to post on forums a lot back when I had my surgery). She also loves cooking and has recipes on here for every stage: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/
  13. Iโ€™m also pre-op, but similar in height and weight to you and also without many medical issues. I started the process at the end of December and surgery is this Monday, March 22. The only reason I considered weight loss surgery initially is because I found out itโ€™s possible to do an endoscopic sleeve and I was too scared to do laparoscopic surgery. Endoscopic is not covered by insurance, but very little recovery time. After attending intro sessions for different bariatric practices, I decided on gastric bypass laparoscopically. My surgeon said he could do the endoscopic procedure and has taught people how to do it, but itโ€™s not as precise and not worth the out of pocket cost. Weight loss is also less. Next I was leaning towards sleeve laparoscopically, but Iโ€™ve had Gerd which made me a better candidate for bypass. An endoscopy revealed the Gerd is from a hiatal hernia which theyโ€™ll fix during my weight loss surgery. Also, if Iโ€™m going to brave surgery, I want the surgery that will give me the best results, which is bypass. I got a second opinion from another practice, and they agreed bypass is my best option. I was hesitant because of the required vitamins, but Iโ€™m convinced now that itโ€™s worth it. I am 5 ft 1/2 inch and was 226 in December. In January I started a pre-op low calorie diet and Iโ€™m about 12 days into the dreaded liquid diet now. Today my weight was 193.5. I think sleeve and bypass are both good options and whatever you decide will be a good choice. It doesnโ€™t hurt to get a second opinion either. I totally trust my surgeon and selected him over everybody else. Still I wanted a second opinion to be sure. Good luck!
  14. I never crushed them, either. Classically, that has been something of a bypass thing as they feared that pills could get stuck in the stoma, but as you can see from catwoman, that is far from a universal thing. Some practices really go overboard on their instructions on how long things need to be done or avoided, maybe to inspire their patients to go along with it rather than see it as just a short time thing that they can skip. Sometimes it may be a matter of ignorance, in that they say that something needs to be done for a year, and that works well, but they really don't really know from experience how long it needs to be done as they never experimented with it. For instance, I have seen a couple come through these forums that were surprised when their doc advanced them to the next eating stage earlier than their published guideline; when asked about it, the doc simply said that they had found patients cheating on the progression and not suffering from it, so they advanced it (they'll change it next time they print up more guidebooks.) You will find a lot of things like that in the bariatric world - some crush pills or use chewables while others never do; some are on a liquid diet at the same point that others are having steak, some have liquid pre op diets and some have none.... There is a lot more experience and habit than science in this game.
  15. My surgeon and nutrisionist pointed us towards Bariatric Advantage chewables. Kind of like Starburst. What are some other good ones out there? What are you taking??

    Any March Surgeries?

I am up for March 29! My liquid diet is different than most...and I can only guess it's because it's a Canadian Bariatric Program (vs USA). I started mine on Feb 22...I am so tired of it :S

    How long to crush meds?

I don't think so. Our crew all got the same message regardless of surgery. Plus I've been active on internet bariatric forums for six years and have never heard a year - it seems like most people are told a few weeks or maybe a couple of months (and a few of us never crush our pills even from the get-go). It's probably like caffeine - surgeons opinions differ.

    Alcohol during maintenance??

One suggestion -- you may want to have your physician order a hepatic function panel for you about once a year. This just ensures that your liver remains healthy. One terrible weekend, due to incredible stress, I overindulged in alcohol and had such a violent physical reaction that I ended up in Urgent Care and learned that my liver enzymes were elevated above normal. But within a week, when retested, they were normal again. So I am very, very careful about drinking alcohol now. My surgeon told us at our pre-bariatric seminar that he has had only one WLS patient die during his 20 years of practice, and this was from alcohol addiction leading to cirrhosis. Because of the WLS, the cirrhosis developed very quickly. So we have to be careful and, if we drink, ask our doctors to conduct blood labs to ensure our livers are processing the alcohol and remaining healthy.
  19. So I had my 2nd consult today and it was like night and day! This surgeon was thorough, he asked for my hematologist's number so he can consult with her, he asked a lot about what's happened since my bariatric surgery, he wanted to know about all my previous surgeries and he answered all my questions without the slightest impatience. Most of all, he treated me like a fellow human being and expressed genuine interest in my well being. The price he quoted me is a little higher than the other guy, but still doable and I can already see that he's worth it. It's also all-inclusive of everything besides prescription meds. Since I'm new on my job, I'm going to wait a bit and maybe plan to have surgery in July or August. But God willing, it looks like this is happening! ๐Ÿ˜€
  20. Nope. I do 1400-1600 calories a day to maintain. I eat tons of complex carbs, but avoid overly refined sugars and white flour. I get 50-60g of protien a day and 25g of fiber. I eat fruit, beans, potatoes, nuts, veggies, healthnut bread, whole grain english muffins, and of course...protien, but I try to get at least half from plant sources. Basically, I just stay within my calorie goal and I do great. I love the flexability of an occasional treat if the rest of my day is balanced. I eat pretty much anything I want. In moderation and balance with the rest of the day. Maintenance has been incredibly nice. No major weight fluctuations in over two years. Few pounds up and down here and there. If I go more than five pounds up, I see the bariatric therapist and it does the trick....helps me get refocused pronto. Getting much better at identifying my eating triggers and the triggers that cause me to self sabotage. Therapy has been an incredibly useful tool:) Very glad to have extreme diets behind me.
  21. Oh... I am doing that too... I am just phasing back in from the VERY start. Starting with my pre and post op diet training. My nutritionist gave me a VERY good plan to progress my diet from clear liquids to a normal, healthy, balanced bariatric diet for life. And that is what I am following. Giving my stomach a rest so that when I restart what you are talking about I am not craving too large amounts of food. and so I will be eating at good intervals again. Will my pouch shrink back down? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe it needs to. Maybe it doesn't. I don't know... but if it does, I will be happy. If it doesn't... I will be happy if I am just back into my healthy eating routine that I did so well at for year one. More importantly, I need to start recognizing those warning signals that I no longer have. They are coming too late. I don't think that will happen without these steps I am taking right now. And resetting my schedule so I don't graze so much. And making sure I don't eat anything later in the evening. It really has been good for me so far. As for the 128.... this just puts me back to where I had been hovering before all heck broke lose in my life... 124-128. Like I said, I hadn't gained a LOT of weight... but I had begun unhealthy habits and gaining the bit of weight that I DID gain was a warning to me to get back on track. See... I have been here many times before surgery. I reach a goal weight. I get complacent. My weight creeps up just a little here and a little there... and then before I know it I am somewhere in the 170-226.8 weight range. Never again!

    Recommendation for Tucson doctors

That's great! I just saw Dr. Patrick Chiasson @ Northwest. His name was given to me by a few people on Bariatric Pal.
  23. Where are you in AZ? Near Tucson? And if you ARE near Tucson, who is your Bariatric doc and which hospital are they associated with? I might be able to help!

    I Need Help...

I stretch sometimes... when I'm feeling good. Otherwise I'm sitting w a pillow behind me to support my back. The weather has been good so I am walking my dogs more. Thank your for your input. I'll push myself more after I see my Dr for a pain shot in my back tomorrow. That should help alot. Well I went to c my Both Dr's yesterday (surgeon & back pain) the surgeon was so HORRIBLE, my anxiety kicked in. I weighted in at 203 & they where suppose to take 3lbs away for the clothes, which they didn't on the chart. So he said i lost ONLY 2lbs when it was actual 5lbs in 3wks. I didn't go to sleep till 430am. My visit w him was almost like a yelling match. Now he wants me to lose 10lbs instead of the 20....uuugh! he making my hair more Grey than what it is & to stop reading the Bariatric Book. First they want me to read it like it was my Bible, now he's telling me NOT to read it! I'm freakin confused... Needless to say I go back in a month. (Uuuugh!) My back pain dr is awesome. No back pain for a while. & I was able to clean my spare bedroom & den. My portions are measured to 3-4oz of protein per serving, veggies 2nd & then starch...I barely hv room for the veggies ๐Ÿ˜ฉ which is a fork full &hvnt had starch yet.. sugar free jello & ice pops are my go to snacks ๐Ÿ˜‹ & my protein drink is my breakfast. I spoke w my brother who had this done 2yrs ago told me the things the Dr said I CAN eat I should no b eating NOW... like beans, hamburger meat & chicken. So I'm going back to MUSHY foods...eggs, oatmeal, jello & yogurt Sheeesh in so ๐Ÿ˜• confused I'm going to call the nutritionist to c where in suppose to b at 6wks? Bcuz the book also says I should not b eating these things but I'm not suppose to follow the book.... go figure?!

    I Need Help...

Oh my gosh, no wonder youโ€™re confused. Definitely call your nut and see what they say. Every program is different but at 6 weeks, Iโ€™m to start on the regular bariatric diet (today, In fact!). Three meals of 1/4 to 1/2 c of food with focus on protein. Right now Iโ€™m sometimes not even getting in a 1/4 c of protein only so I have my doubts about adding anything else in. hang in there!
