3 Weeks Po, Slow Losing, Moody & Hungry:-)
teambrown4 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So today is 3 weeks post op date. I am very glad that I am feeling better every week. The pain from the incision in the right side muscle was almost unbearable the first week and now it only bothers me when sitting too long. I am totally used to burping in-between bites..lol.... not something I ever thought I would be comfrtable with, but it has to be done or food gets stuck. I had a bad weekend of trying new foods, and all feeling stuck. As for the weight loss.... well I feel that I am a slow loser? I can see that lots of people have twice the success as me. I lost 9lbs the first week and 4 since then, nothign since last friday tho. I know that 12lbs is still something to be happy about. I could not even button my pants after surgery because of the iv fluids and gas inside me so at least I feel that I am fitting into my pants with ease. I know that 12lbs in 3 weeks is something I would not have done on my own. I also know that not drinking alcohol or eating late night Snacks would still be happening if I did not have this surgery. It is a shame I could not have adopted this mind set before, as I am still always hungry, so I have been cranky. The worst for me right now is the moods! I am hungry... my dr says it is gas, and ummmmm noooooo it is hunger!! so I am depressed not to be able to fullfill that emtiona need sometimes, and then angry cause I am hungry and feel pain when I eat most of the time, so then angry for putting myself in the position of being so over weight that I had to have surgery and then I feel sad that I have so many restrictions which make it hard to enjoy being out with friends and family as we used to. I am glad I made the choice to do something for me that will help change my life because I know that a year from now i will see this was all worth it. good luck to all on your journey. -
Less than 3 months since band to sleeve and I'm over half-way to goal!
genepha posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just realized, after updating my ticker that I'm over half-way to my goal weight. I'm 12 1/2 weeks post-op. In some ways my weight loss feels slow but I know, compared to my weight loss with the band, it isn't slow at all!!! It took me about 18 months to lose 50 pounds with the band!! Feeling pretty happy with my sleeve! Hope everyone is doing great! -
Any March Bandsters...

I'm scheduled for lap band tomorrow morning in Knoxville, TN. My Physician is Greg Mancini, with UT weight loss and surgery center. The process was a nightmare, but I'm finally there. I've lost 44 lbs. so far prior to surgery. I lost 10 pounds the first week on my 2 wk pre-op liquid diet. So far so good. I have an amazing and supportive wife, that will help me tremendously. Tommorrow 7am I get to start living my life without my best friend being food form now on. I look forward to sitting comfortably on an airliner, travelling. -

Unfill! I went through the same thing in January. Had a fill on a Wednesday and all was well, liquids went down fine, next day mushies went down fine. Friday I was struggling, and Friday night I was coughing and throwing up. Didn't get back in to the doc til Tuesday and by then I was so weak from dehydration, I was ready for them to remove all of the fluid!! Thank goodness she only took out what had been added but in those six days I lost 11 lbs!! It took some doing to keep that 11 lbs off but I did it and even the doc office said this is good because usually you gain because the loss is consider sick weight and once the body recoups it puts the weight back on. So I would suggest not waiting it out and call your doc... Best of luck to you!

Ladies...I need advice!
Tiffykins replied to Amber07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My stylist advised against it as well since my hair was so fragile during the shedding stage. Bleaching is so harsh on your hair, and it might fry what hair you have left. If you really want to do something to change things up, check out the demi-permanent lighteners, and other options. There is no way I would have bleached my hair even though my hair was extremely healthy, thick and coarse before the losing stage. I'd lie to you, but if you did it, and then come back with even less hair, and fried ends, I'm sure you'd be even more upset. -
Ladies...I need advice!
juliarh replied to Amber07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also have very very thick hair -- and lost a TON of it -- now it's just normally thick -- that said, DO NOT bleach your hair. I didn't even cut it until this past week (8 months of no hair cut!) -- I take biotin and have about 1 inch regrowth now. But seriously, I listened to all those who had lost hair and who are hair stylists -- I just was very very careful with my hair -- I love my thick hair and don't want to damage it anymore than necessary! -
Ladies, My hair is falling out like crazy. I have EXTREMELY thick hair though, and LOTS of it. So you'd never know. But, it's breaking half way down AND falling out at the follicle. Anywho, it's almost summer and my hair is DARK. So, can I go get it bleached? My hairdresser says no, cuz it's falling out so rapidly. But I need someone to say YES! and tell me why. So figure out a way to tell me yes, lie if you have to! hahaha!!

Aw, I know you want to, but your overall hair health might be better if you wait. Keep positive! It won't last forever.

Hi all of you  I have not had my band fitted it should be in May. I just have a couple of questions for the more experienced bandsters. 1. I would like to take up kick boxing after I have some initial weight loss but am wondering if it is going to be a good idea??? Would it possibly disturb my band is I substained some impact to the band area??? 2. Does any one ever feel the tube from the port to the band move about? Sorry had to ask curiosity was killing me!!! Thanks in advance! Miss Wilde XX

That is a great Post op weight loss Pookie. Most of the 25 I lost was pre-op. I have not lost in now 5 days but I am not concerned. It is normal. I am eating about 800 calories per day now. There comes a point at such a low calorie range that the body adapts and you will stop losing for a bit. After fills I am going to shoot for about 1000-1200. I should start losing weight on that amount. I have had many Plateaus in the past and I am sure their are more to come. I am trying to look at it differently though. This is a lifetime change so if it takes a few more months to get off the last 75 pounds then so be it. It will come off. Good luck. Probably didn't help me that you could classify a reese cup as a mushy if you chew it. Only 1 though. Not too bad. 1 piece of candy since the 9th of September. Greg

My doctor sent a referral for the weight loss clinic at Brighams so I am waiting for the call to schedule the information session. Funny enough, I used to work at Tufts! They are a great hospital! I'm fortunate to have options. I am open to suggestions so if there is a better route I will definitely consider it!

Hi All, just feel like I need a little rant/vent! I am getting really frustrated now... Since Jan 29th I have only lost 3lb! I know it is better than nothing at all or even a gain, but 3lb! I ain't saying that I am perfect, 'cos I ain't... but I am 95% of the time. I am, once again ticking all the boxes; even increased my exercise and started new classes... circuit training and boxing training... trying to mix things up a little but to no real gain. My head is playing tricks again; on the one side it is saying... well done! So far so good. And then the other side it is saying 'this isn't fair, why aren't I losing more?' I am waiting on the results of my blood test to see what my hormones are doing cos my monthlies are all over the place and I haven't 'seen' anything since the 8th Jan! Not sure if this is part of the problem, but even so, it is really starting to do my head in *sighs* I hope this isn't the end of my weight loss...

Kaiser (Options) Program Required 10% Weight Loss...didn't Make It!
Mzluvee posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What happens if you do not meet the 10% weight loss by the time you go in for your medical review, what will happen? Kaiser Sleevers can you give me feedback? I have lost, just not that 10% -
Sweetheart, this is not something that you hide. You are going to have to be really honest with yourself about why you are going this route. Have you spoken to your doctor about any other possible ways to lose weight? The lap band is not a quick fix, one day you get the surgery and the next day you are just eating smaller portions. For the first few weeks after surgery, you are reteaching your stomach and your mind to recognize "full". You will need as much emotional support as possible. If you hide it, then you have no one. Now I'm not saying that you have to shout it from the rooftops that you are banded, but it sounds like you are a bit ashamed of making that decision. Look around on this site...see what you think. Also, I suggest attending a surgical weight loss seminar in your area. Try going on any hospital's website in your area that does bariatric surgery. They should have classes listed there. Some of the classes are for folks, like yourself, thinking about surgery. You have to go thru nutrition classes and a psych evaluation before the surgery. This is so you are prepared or the psychologist sees if you are in fact ready for this life changing procedure. I've been banded one week so far. I'm just drinking shakes and liquids right now. I went to a buffet (I know right) with my family on Sunday. I smelled all that good food, but I ordered a glass of milk and just mixed up my shake right there at the table. You are taking a stand for your life. I hope I didn't come off harsh because that was definitely not my intention. I just really want you to think about what you are doing. God bless,

My husband is going to meet with the consultant with me on Wednesday, I met with her last week. I want to have the surgury (less invasive than lipo-right?). I want to have my body not be an issue with "me" anymore. My self image is not like it used to be and my confidence level has gone down. Of course my husband and immediate family will know about the surgery, I just don't want any one else to know. I guess I am embarrassed that I am resorting to surgery. It would be easier for me to say I am getting lipo or a tuck. I am not overly obese so, yes, I am paying cash for the surgery. I guess it is good to hear that the loss is gradual so it doesn't raise any eyebrows. Everybody that knows me, knows that I am always concerned about weight. Can this be my secret or will it get out???

How do you hide it?
Oregondaisy replied to peaches76's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Honesty, hardly anyone knows about my band. I didn't want people saying "how much have you lost now" I also don't like people knowing I paid 10 grand to lose weight. I just went out to lunch with 6 other women on Sat. and none of them have a clue. They know I have lost a lot of weight over the last year and a half but I tell them the truth. I have changed my eating habits, I exercise 6 days a week and I changed my portion sizes. This weight loss was not overnight. It's also pretty important that you don't keep your band tight if this is how you want to go. It's the puking that gives people away. I was too tight for about a week and had to live on Soup but I just told people I had a late lunch, or I wasn't feeling well. I wasn't feeling well when my band was too tight. -
2 week pre op diet, average loss?
☠carolinagirl☠ replied to Seymour1971's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
great loss so far..but the pre op is not really about losing (weight) its more to get the body ready for surgery..larger BMI people can lose more and sometimes some people hardly lose anything...its basically liquids...and it happens fast and also on the post op.....and then when people start to eat again (slowly) because one is just in drinking their food, they can gain or (even not lose anymore) and then they start the whats wrong stuff.......AND that is where you need to realize, inches lost mean actual weight.. measure yourself now.......and then again a couple weeks post op.....use that guide as a sign.. all the best. -
This is strictly my personal opinion, but it's a matter of works for you. I know people who do both. Personally, I go by gross calories. If I subtract exercise calories then my loss stalls. But, I know I plenty of people who go by net and do great. I'd try it both ways if I were you. Do a week using net then a week using gross and see which works out better for you.

@@coleenrenee - I assure you @@JamieLogical wasn't laughing to be mean. Post similar to yours pop up every day. Many people expect those big numbers all the time. Truth is there is as much a possibility you can hit that 3 - 5lb weight loss as there is that you'll hit that 1 - 2lb weight loss. It depends a lot on your genetics as much as it also depends on how good you are at hitting those Fluid and Protein goals. I also agree with @Inner Surfer Girl that staying away from the scale might be a good idea. At the very least weigh no more than once a week. Keep a food diary at least initially, and exercise. ETA: Just noticed our stats are similar. If you want to friend me on Myfitnesspal, my username there is Milaxx

Hey all, first time posting here and I've been dealing with this for months now. I got the duodenal switch about 7 or 8 years ago when I was about 16. Crazy young I know, and to this day I still question that decision and probably always will because of my age. I've had a great experience as far as weight loss goes, but as I've gotten older I've gotten increasingly worried about malnutrition/deficiencies developing over time. I'm religious about my supplements, and I literally got my bloodwork done earlier this week so I'm good about that. However, the anxiety about potential deficiencies that I feel like might go undetected in bloodwork (for instance I know B12 tests can be inaccurate in detecting deficiencies) or that there might be a time that supplements become ineffective for me is becoming extremely difficult to bear, keeping me awake at night, causing anxiety attacks, making my life miserable, etc. All to the point where despite not technically being diagnosed with any deficiencies, it makes me regret the surgery and feel like I'm going to get severe side effects or die an early death because of this decision. My entire family has had the procedure and I'm the only one who really deals with this to this extent so it's difficult for me to cope. I have appointments with my primary care physician and plan on contacting my surgeon to discuss these risks more with him, but I have the feeling that this anxiety will persist as my anxiety causes me to have doubts about the ability of modern medical science to adequately monitor the effects of a procedure this radical. I realize that all of these concerns are likely what should have deterred me from the surgery in the first place, but at the time my family, medical team and myself thought it was a good decision. Tl;dr: having extreme health anxiety about longterm nutritional complications despite doing everything by the book and don't know what to do about it.

How fast will the weight come off?
Berry78 replied to bbrowning123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Best guess: Plan on losing 10-15 pounds the first month, and 6-8 pounds a month after that.. and the scale will pretty much stop at 160-180lbs. (Once it stops you'll have to work extra hard for additional losses). If you lose faster, it's gravy, but keep expectations low so you aren't disappointed. -
Hair falls out after anesthesia no matter what surgery you have- and then after this particular surgery it continues if you do not supplement your diet/vitamins correctly. It doesnt fall out in clumps or chunks- sometimes it doesnt even happen. Personally I have had progressive hair loss for years mostly due to a thyroid condition; after thyroid cancer, having it removed, lap band- having it removed and then having the sleeve done- I am thankful I started with a full head of thick hair- I still have a full head of hair and it isnt as thick as it used to be but NO one can notice unless I say something. I also started taking Biotin years ago and take 1000mg a day- which a lot of people swear by-. I would not let a few strands of hair loss interfere with your life/whole body changing experience at all.. It is a very trivial side effect if you ask me.
