    Exersice Band Wagon

I am working out at least five times a week. I go to the gym at my job after work and I have been dedicated to my workout. I feel great after a good workout, but I have gained almost two pounds since I started. What's up with that? I have not had a fill yet and I am eating mushies which I guess is causing the weight gain. I am patient though and I know after I get my fill on June 26th the weight should start coming off again. Good luck everyone on your exercising.
  2. Hi, this is my first time posting here. Just looking for some support/advice. So I'm scheduled to have a gastric sleeve at the end of the month. My weight is 190lbs and I'm 5'3". I know I am at the lower bmi to be having the surgery but I fractured both of my hips last year (due to massive weight gain and low bone density) and am at a huge risk of fracturing them again if I do not get this weight off. I have tried everything, I can lose a stone but always put it back on and more. I stupidly told my family about getting the surgery done. My husband has been so supportive and understands why I need to get this done. However the rest of my family have been a disaster. They all think it is a case of just eating less and exercising more. I have tried to explain numerous times that I have tried everything and this is something I need to get done for my health. They are also worried about my dying or getting serious complications. I have said that it is not up for discussion anymore, that my decision has been made. This hasn't stopped them continually talking to me negatively about it. As soon as I am on my own (when my husband is not there) they come at me about it. Im finding it really hard emotionally to deal with this, and feel like I'm at such a low point now. Nobody seems to understand, no matter how hard I have tried to explain things. For me this is not about fitting into smaller clothes or looking good. I want my life back, I want to be able to do the things I used to do and not to be so depressed about my weight. Has anyone gone through this with their families that has some advice?
  3. Hey everyone. I had my surgery on 04/18. So ten days have gone by. The first week I struggled getting 2oz of protein shake per day down. And would attempt to drink water. Now, I'm on soft foods. But I'm gaining weight. Is this normal. I was down 7 lbs since surgery and now I'm back up a pound and a half. What's really going on? Has anyone had similar issues?

    Antidepressants and Weight

The only antidepressant that doesn't cause weight gain is Wellbutrin. Psychotropic drugs like Seraquil, Zyprexa, Depakote, and Lithium almost always cause weight gain. Ability, although a good drug, raises blood sugar. I've realized that less is more and just stuck to taking one antidepressant. I usually seasonal depression and take Seraquil during Nov-March. I've decided not to do it this year and try more natural approaches. Good luck!

I am scared and anxious and freaking out!

Holy cow, Jane! Congratulations!! :D Do NOT sweat the weight gain, you know better than that. Babies are the only really good reason to gain weight. Yay, I'm so happy for you!! :banana
  6. I know that for me life's serious stresses and justifiable angst don't inspire me to overeat. But celebration, partying and being overserved certainly do. And then there's the simple power of a new *habit* -- eating and drinking in a new way over a month's time -- that can be either positive or dangerous for my weight maintenance. Consistency in one's behavior can be leveraged for good or evil. Examples: The holiday 8, the freshman 15, the newlywed 20, the quitting smoking 30, etc. Check out this interesting article about life events that contribute to weight gain: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/11/09/will-i-get-fat-15-signs-you-ll-gain-weight.html

New to the Post OP World

Hi Jackie! It sounds like we have a lot in common I'm 28, BMI in the upper 50s, and doing the bypass on 8/8. I didn't even think about the gas and swelling causing weight gain I bet that was a nasty surprise. It sounds like you did really well losing weight before the operation though. I'm struggling with that, myself. I think I'm going to try to weigh myself less, actually, and just try to trust that it will come off in its own time, as I make good choices. Otherwise, I think it's too easy for me to get obsessive about the numbers. How are you tolerating the post-op diet so far? Are you doing the Protein drinks? I'm pretty nervous about what it will feel like to try to drink after surgery. Anyway, I hope you keep healing well. Stay strong! Amy
  8. Hi all. I was banded 2/18/03, and am now 168 from 230. I hve been looking for a supprt group. I'm so glad I found you. I live in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Is there anyone out there from around here? I hurt my back, and in the last 6 months, experienced depression and a 10 pound weight gain. I have gone the last 3 years without a group, but for these last 20 pounds, I really feel like I need some support. I was banded by Dr. Ponce in Dalton, Georgia, and have had no problems. Slider Food

Hi Karina...I think a slider food is anything that can be digested rather quickly, and doesn't leave you full or stay with you for very long, making it easy to eat again soon. People say to try and avoid these kinds of food because they can potentially contribute to weight gain, which is what we don't want!
  10. Right on Miss Mac! I totally feel you!! You have an acre in your backyard?! Sooo awesome! Sucks about the weather. I live in Cali & where I live it's 60-70 all the time. We just hit 80 today! So with this beautiful weather I have no excuse to get me butt outside. You are right I have been sidelined the past few months w the weight gain. I've been overweight my whole life but I've always been active. Gym, 5 triathlons, 1/2 marathon, mud runs, 5ks, I just can't wait to do these this w/o carrying 75-100 extra pounds! Finally going to be the athlete I want to be!
  11. My last in weigh in is in 2 weeks and I need to loose 10lbs. This is really stressing me out because I gained 3lbs on my 2nd weigh in. If I don’t loose then I will be denied and have to start all over. I recently quit smoking and that contributed to my weight gain. OMG !!!!!!!

What To Expect After Band Removal

Expect weight gain unless you are very strict to the eating plan.

    Stretch Marks

I think some people are unfortunately prone to developing them. My best friend gained 60 lbs with her son and within 4 months had a flat stomach and not ONE single stretch mark. Lucky her. I have no children so I dont know what my body would have done, I fear I would have them all over also. I have some older ones due to teenage growth spurt and some from my 20s around my lower stomach, but they are barely visible now. Mine faded so much that I dont think others would really notice them, but I know they are there. I think the only reason I didnt develop them horribly with the weight gain is because it has been slow and steady and my skin gradually adjusted. Too bad there is no way to get rid of the things.
  14. I've heard/read a lot of people say that "you have to get your head right" if you want to succeed in WLS. I'm not really into counseling; I guess I just don't believe in trying to change my thoughts and I find the idea of therapy kind of... contrived? (I really don't mean to offend people who do find counseling helpful; if it helps you, awesome! I'm just skeptical that it would do me any good.) I also had a bad experience in the past with being forced into counseling with an unethical therapist, which soured my view of counseling. I really want to succeed at WLS, though, so I'm willing to give counseling a shot if there's a chance it could help. I never thought I'd willingly eat mashed cauliflower, either, but I've opened my mind to things I wouldn't have tried before surgery. Plus, I've reached my out-of-pocket maximum on my health insurance, so any counseling I get before the end of the year would be fully paid by my insurance. So, does anyone who has gotten counseling specifically related to WLS have any advice, or can you share how it has helped you? What should I look for in a therapist? I've done a cursory search of nearby therapists in my insurance network, and I haven't seen any of them specifically mention things like WLS, food issues, or eating disorders. I don't think I have an eating disorder (like binge eating disorder) and I don't think I am really an "emotional eater," but I do think I have some food issues and some baggage relating to eating and weight that have contributed to my weight gain. Would someone who deals with "mood disorders" cover that, or should I look for someone with specific expertise in eating disorders or WLS patients?

5 Things You're Looking Forward To!

Quitting all my diabetes meds, high blood pressure meds so my body can go back to functioning naturally. Waking up feeling good and up not like I was hit with a mack truck. Being my old cheerful happy self again before the weight gain. Go back to work feeling great and healthy. Not being the fat girl at the family holiday party and have everyone give me the lecture on how to lose weight. Feeling wonderful and not caring what people say. Mainly just take care of my self for once and be self aware that focusing on others and not me got me to where I am today! Self Love and be in Harmony. Go on a honeymoon with my new husband and not postpone it just because I felt I didn't look good. I was brave enough to have a white wedding as a plus size girl but not ready for a honeymoon. Lol.

Sad but true - friends that are jealous!

I have been going through this with my step-sister, step-mother & a couple of my Aunts. It's sad. They are really missing out. When I recently went through my band trouble & subsequent weight gain, they all seemed to really "be concerned". Whatever!!!! Thank goodness I can see through it. I have learned to distance myself from those who are negative. Thay just drag me down & I have been down long enough!!

    medication and weight gain

Absolutley, some cause weight gain? I hope your doc is aware of you stoping your meds. Suddenly not taking your antidepressant can cause seriously effects. The following are an example of the meds with possible weight gain effects Certain tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline, imipramine (Tofranil) and doxepin (Silenor) Certain monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), such as tranylcypromine (Parnate) and phenelzine (Nardil) Paroxetine (Paxil), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) Mirtazapine (Remeron), which is an atypical antidepressant — medication that doesn't fit neatly into another antidepressant category On the flip side though, everyone responds to meds differently and can lose weight on the same meds others gain with. Talk to your doc about changing your med type to a different one. There are some on the market that are known not to cause weight gain

Cold since surgery - is this normal?

I have seen this issue brought up here. Seems many of us are colder at a lower calorie intake and or lower weight. Enjoy summer! Fall is approaching, and I have heating pads in several spots at my house and an electric blanket just for the foot of my bed!! (My feet seem to be the coldest part of me.... )I have resorted to running a hair dryer into my boots to heat things up! Best of luck! Sad to say that even a small weight gain made me warmer Sigh
  19. thanks everyone for all the great replies. It's so nice to get support when I was scared I'd get yelled at a lot. Also, I finally got the nerve to talk with my surgeon, and she also suprised me by being very happy and hopeful for me. that the band might be very helpful in keeping my weight gain in the 15 to 20 pound range (i'm only suppose to gain this much because of my current weight). And also that if I need to, I can get an unfill. this whole situation makes me very grateful to have the band, the adjustable band, more than ever.
  20. Thank you!!!! The way my doctor has me set up is, one week clear liquids, second and third week full liquids, meaning all kinds of broths, protein shakes and drinkable yogurts. Then from there I go straight to solids.. So was not sure about the weight gain, and how it will affect my tummy...I guess time will tell!!!

    Questions about the procedure

Hi Lourdas, To start with, I have absolutely no answer for you. Only to say that I have the same question. I have a rare disease, and along with the disease is trunk/belly fat. Most of us with the condition have gained a lot of weight post-disease surgery and then more on certain medications. I, like you are wondering if the procedure is even going to work considering that the weight gain is a side effect of other issues. I am willing to try though. Good luck to you. And I hope someone can answer the question for us both.

Bypass or sleeve...will the answer come to me?

I like your honesty and rhyming skills. ????. Welcome! Choice of surgery is a highly personal subject matter. I can tell you that for me I agonized over it a lot, and really did some soul searching. I entered the fray dead set on the sleeve, but as I got deeper into it, researching, and listening to other's accounts I ended up switching to the bypass, which I'll be having on 07/29. I'm older, so my metabolism has slowed. So maybe I would benefit from having malabsorption in addition to restriction. And I have a wicked sweet tooth. I was concerned about the GERD issue that some people who opted for sleeve have suffered from post op, to the point where they're considering revisions to bypass. And while it's nice to think that optimally I would be able to eat anything after sleeve, but in smaller amounts, I know that for me that could well be a slippery slope back to weight gain. In the end neither surgery comes with guarantees and complications are always possible. So you have to weigh the pros and cons in relation to your lifestyle and expectations. Good luck!
  23. Oh my gosh, thank you so much for sharing what people don't see when we say "we can't stand our bodies". So easy to hide behind clothes. You are an inspiration to me. I am new on here and so thankful I found it. I have learned more in one week about the band and others struggles then in the last 2 years of being banded. I felt so alone until now. There are thousands of you struggling and celebrating too. I just felt like I found a wealth of friends. I am going through a difficult time with my port revision and weight gain to lack of "the right fill". This site just may have given me a new reason to continue with the band. I was ready to tell the doctor to remove it because he is not listening to me. When you tell your doctor the awful pain you are feeling and the weight I have gained back you would think there would be a red flag!! CT Scan on Monday. Finally maybe some answers. I may not know you, but I sure am proud of you and you have just given me hope again. Thank you for being so brave and honest...we all need a bit of that sometimes. Please keep posting....
  24. I wish you all the best. I still struggle with the fear of weight gain and find that there are days (like today) where I cannot stop eating. Even though I am choosing Protein first and trying to keep track of what I eat, I get over whelmed with depression and then "the moose is loose" in the kitchen. The food I have in the house is "safe" but when I go to my parents home I have even a bigger challenge. Tonight I was offered a mini bag of popcorn only to realize it was kettle corn. Like an idiot, I ate the bag (didn't want to offend dad) and then I was nauseated. I am still on the weight loss diet and loose about 1/2 lb a week. Though I am getting closer to my goal, I fear the day when I start gaining. I know this is a life long struggle and the surgery is a tool to help meet my goal. Fighting the head/mind games will be an ongoing battle for the rest of my life. It helps to read that others have the same struggles.
