    Hitting a Plato vegetarian

Plateaus can happen for no/many reasons even sometimes when your body is pausing to adjust. But if it has been very long (6+ months) w/o weightloss you may have reached maintenance (I know it was quite hard for me to maintain strict vegetarianism while in the losing phase. I found mostly grain free ovo lacto pescaterian the best path for me with flexing in solid animal protein occasionally) To try and kickstart weightloss again perhaps you could take a look at your diet and weed out any problem foods (highly processed, high sodium, wheat fillers) Easy vegetarian foods are usually high calorie/carb. To avoid This you may need to use pure vegetarian protein sources (tofu, eggs) but reduce precooked packaged items as well as limit grains & legumes (if you eat them) Good Luck 💜
  2. You’re making the right choice, I had R-n-Y July 2017. I’ve gone from 89kgs to 65kgs ( 198 lbs - 140 lbs) been maintaining my weight for over 18 months now and yes it’s possible ! I also ridiculed my fat body, it was a form of protection, we’re just saying it before the other person does !! Surgery was the kick start and then the nutritional advise (tool) has kept me at maintenance. I’ve had blips at Christmas time, been scared each time thinking that my appetite has increased and my stomach has got bigger too. But nope, I go back to small diet and appetite, it’s such a great feeling, being in control 🙌🏽 I loved carbs like potatoes and bread to make me feel sated. I have 1 slice of bread a day now and potatoes maybe once every 2/3 weeks, i love the fact I’m not using carbs for comfort anymore. I do have naughty days when I want a bag of crisps/chips, in which case I’ll buy a bag of roasted nuts, that way at least I’m getting some protein whilst being naughty. ! Protein has been very challenging for me as I’m vegetarian, my diet has never been dairy based but it is now. My tummy is still quite small, I can’t eat huge or even ‘normal’ portions. I’m not on hypertension drugs anymore. I love being able to buckle my sandals and tying shoe laces. 😆 I can’t believe I was carrying a ‘suitcase’ (23kg excess fat/weight) around for 30yrs. When I go on holiday, my suitcase feels very heavy carrying it to car, then to check in, to think I was carrying that around with me daily... crazy and scary for 30 years. Telling people - I didn’t tell my family as I worried that if I didn’t lose weight I’d be ashamed. But, one does lose weight and you will ! Don’t stress about that, this surgery does work and using the tools that you have learnt help you to be sucessful in the future. I was nervous too, but it’s great being on the other side now Good luck !

    Reading labels.

See if you can get back in to your dietician & with their guidance develop an eating plan that is sustainable in the long term. It’s best to design a way of eating that works for you & not for someone else. You’re physiologically & psychologically different to everyone else. You may find you don’t follow a specific ‘diet’ but pick & choose across a few eating styles. Like low carb but not low fat or incorporate some vegan or vegetarian meals each week. In the meantime, & as a starting point, keep in mind the recommended daily amounts for the ‘average’ person who’s maintaining like 6 teaspoons or 25g added sugar per day for women. You will need to consume less if you still want to lose. Take into account your plan, lifestyle & personal needs. How many calories are you eating a day? It seems like it could be low if you’re still on shakes. It’s not sustainable to be still having shakes for breakfast & most lunches. You need to be eating real food, especially as you seem to be almost at your goal weight, to get the nutrients your body needs. I stopped taking multivitamins from maintenance because I got all I needed from the food I ate. I was so happy not to have to take them or buy them! I don’t buy a lot of prepared foods, sauces, condiments, etc. simply so I can control the ingredients & how they’re prepared/cooked. If I do, I study the nutrition panel & look for low processed foods, low sugar content, low fat content, multi & whole grains, no or low artificial sweeteners, Watch the ‘front of the jar’ labelling though. No added sugar usually means they’ve used artificial sweeteners or sugar alternatives or they’ve upped the fat. I bought a 25% less fat ‘lite’ peanut paste. It actually had 50% more carbs, 20% more sugar & only 16 calories less per serve.

    Weird Cravings

What ever is on sale and vegetarian. LOL:) The ones I ate today were Ortega 120 calories for 1/2 cup... 8 grams of protein, 0 grams of fat, 5 grams of fiber! Good eats. Had some reduced fat colby jack and hot homemade salsa. I like to save my fats budget in all things "taco" for healthier avocado fat:)

    Raw food diet?

The raw food diet I'm familiar with does not include meats. It's a vegetarian diet. I was a bit enamored of this a couple years ago and managed to last about a month during the summer. I had to quit because I started having intestinal issues...which apparently is not uncommon for people who stay on this. The only problems I see at first glance is that raw vegetables, unless made into smoothies (and now you're drinking your meals again), can be a problem with the band once you get closer to your sweet spot. I didn't hit my sweet spot until about 7cc but raw vegies became a thing of the past for me at around 4cc. Also, if you have any kind of blood sugar problem, the fruit may cause blood sugar swings which will lead to cravings and hunger. I'm not sure how you'd get your Protein in. I know vegetarians get it by combining things like Beans and rice and tofu (which are all cooked), but I don't know where you'd get it from fruits and vegetables. YMMV. .

    Raw food diet?

I have a 9 cc relaize band, it has 8.25cc's in and I have restriction but theres not one thing out here that I CANT eat. . Not what I expected from the band but thats ok. I chew my food well and definately take my time eating my meals. Cunner, I loved the 2nd paragragh of your post,,I can see the bowl and loaf of bread, lol. I did what you did years ago, and went vegetarian and loved it but found I was eating alot of bread, crackers, cheese as well as my veges and fruit. I didnt gain weight, but moved in with a meat and potatoes man,,lol. Im still with him and he is actualy supporting me with the meals im trying. He will NEVER try them,,lol ,, but thats ok. I have a great nutritionist, and she said if it works and i dont get ill or have issues regardgin the band and gettting stuck to try it and see how it goes. I beleive she is a vegetarian. But to switch back If I have ANY issues at all. Protein, I am eating nuts and Beans soaked to soften them. as well as the fresh off the farm dairy products (cheese and milk) There are also veges out there that are a great source of Calcium and protein both. Melody, I agree with you on drinking meals. I dont have a problem with that and the recipes I have right now are alot different from what I was using before the surgery and after. I am making everything home made (except for the green powder) and it seemed to hold up very well this morning when I had my first one. I definately dont want to have them all the time. I tried, the other day a 14 grain raw Cereal that was very good with dried cherries and raisins with some chopped walnuts and raw milk. I am using supplemens as well just to make sure I dont deplete anything. You guys are great!
  7. What supplements are y'all taking besides the calcium and vitamins? I've added biotin for hair loss, Vitamin E and K for better calcium absorption, flaxseed oil for Omega-3 fatty acids (I'm a vegetarian so won't take fish oil...) and a probiotic. I had to get one of those freakin pill organizers that my mother-in-law used and laughed at...Gawd I'm gettin old...

    Macronutrients

1200 calories, 75 to 80 gm of protein. 100 or less gm carbs, fat is 25 to 30 I think. I have heard of Dr. Davis because of his association with other vegan,/vegetarian doctors. I haven't read his book yet tho. Does he specifically talk about wls patients and protein or the average person and protein? I will definitely look into it. I've never heard of Dr. Weiner. I will look him up. I tried to do 1200 calories but i was lethargic and couldn't do anything but sleep. And I ate tons of veggies. My dietician said I should do that now so I can go back to it later. The problem with that is my metabolism is already slow as it is because I have chronic back pain and haven't been able to work at all. I actually just filled for disability. Anyways, I'm still constantly hungry on this 1500 calorie diet. Atleast I'm not as lethargic. Thank you for your advice Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

    Macronutrients

I think Dr Matthew Weiner can help you. I went pescetarian for 6 weeks and it was terrible. I was hungry all the time, my carbs were higher than normal, weight loss stalled and I was overall miserable. I can't imagine doing this as a vegan or a vegetarian. I went pescetarian because I was playing with the idea of going vegetarian, but those 6 weeks convinced me it is impossible for me to do. There was one vegetarian that post here. They don't post often and never got anywhere near goal. They could tell you what proteins are okay but I haven't seen them in months.

I don't use protein powders, I drink Myoplex shakes. I know a lot of people swear by the powders but I would rather get my protein from things like yogurt and cottage cheese. I am a vegetarian, so my protein intake in general is different. I am fasting today. I have to say it isn't any harder or easier than years past. Last year I was still nursing on Tisha b'Av and that was actually more difficult!
  11. When I'm awake I don't really miss the bad foods all that much. But when I'm asleep I dream of eating all sorts of forbidden things, and then freak in my dream that I'm gonna dump. Also I'm a vegetarian and I dream of eating hamburgers all the time. It's such a relief to wake up and find out that I didn't really eat the forbidden fruit...

Who knew eating healthy tasted so good!

If you're a fan of Pinterest look me up (fight4light) i have a lapband board have compiled quite the list of band friend stuff. It's weird. I've learned a lot about myself now that I have the band. I love eating healthy. I LOVE substitute foods. Making things look bad and unhealthy but really be good for you. I've also gone semi vegetarian and tolerate more vegetables than I ever did before. On top of all that, I can tell myself "no" now. I can tell when I'm hungry or just bored at home. It's an amazing feeling and just good to know ill have my happy ending.
  13. The bike riding only bothers my knee when I try to go up one of the many hills near my house. Not pain as much as I hear it "clicking" and I get off and walk it up I felt really good on the plane, was flying alone with my 8 year-old and just felt happy and capable of keeping up with her. I'm doing pretty well with my protein; I like Think Thin 20 g bars or Premier Protein 30 g shakes for my breakfast then have yogurt for a snack with grilled chicken breast or shrimp for lunch. Some more chicken (deli meat) usually for a snack and cheese or an egg in the afternoon then some other protein for dinner. I usually only have a snack later if I'm low on protein. My daughter recently became a vegetarian so I'm experimenting with meatless options. If you're on Facebook I'm in the group My Bariatric Kitchen - they have recipe ideas and other advice for getting in protein. I use MyFitnessPal to track my protein and have the same username if you want to friend me to see my diary. I've struggled with my water intake but am doing good today - 40 ounces so far. I have a desk job so the steps are harder to come by but hopefully I'll bike tonight. I'm going to try going back to the gym at work and use one of the trainers, just need to start off slow since I'm only at about 1000 calories too. Have fun camping!! Our family doesn't camp (yet) but I'm a Girl Scout leader and took our troop for an overnight in June that involved some hiking and was so happy I could keep up!! Looking forward to more adventures as I become more healthy!!
  14. I am a vegetarian so most of my protein sources have carbs in them. I eat around 90-150 carbs a day, mostly from good clean sources with a few chocolate chips thrown in for good measure! I keep track of calories, get in my 65+ gms of protein a day, and try to get in variety for the rest of my 1100-1400 cals a day. I have 6 pounds to get to "normal" weight and have eaten regular food mostly the whole time. I think of myself as losing slowly, but 82 pounds in 10 months is NOT that slow. The 10 more pounds I am shooting for will come off eventually... while I am eating good whole grain, garden grown, home made carb including food in small doses. I love my sleeve! ...the only "phony" food I eat is hi quality vegetarian protein foods, like protein chips, bars, cereal and drinks... to help me keep my protein up and keep my hands off of junk like candy bars and chips. You have to figure out for yourself what you can live with for the long run.
  15. Hi, I'm getting a lap band removed with a RNY revision in November and I was wondering if any of y'all that have had the bypass are vegetarians? What is your "go-to" protein? Thanks!
  16. SorryNameTaken

    Vegetarian bypass peeps?

I also am not full vegetarian, but I get a lot of my protein from beans, lentils, and tofu. I also add unflavored protein (Unjury vegan) to just about anything I can that it will mix well into. Plant fusion and Tru supplements have been my favorite vegan protein shakes out there so far, but there are so many I have yet to try.
  17. So...any advice? I'm leaning toward trying an ovo-lacto pescatarian diet. I'm six months post op next week. Meats sit ok on my tummy but I don't like how I feel on such a meat heavy diet. I can only hold so much food so I feel like I get mostly meat and very little veg and fruit. I miss my plant based foods! I love fish and it never gives me issues. I'm a little worried about protein intake. I've never done a diet like this before it just seems like it will make me feel good. I'm very accustomed to a low carb diet so this alone will raise the carbs I get just with the veggies and fruits. Any other vegetarian or pescatarian peeps post-vsg? I'd like to keep super processed foods to a minimum if possible. Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app

    When ur sick

I drink Ensure max, 30 g. of protein and had 2 a day at 3 weeks out. I put it on ice and sip it all day. You have to get in protein it is imperative. I read on this site about a woman that didn't and she ended up in the hospital. I didn't like the drink but saw it as medicine. It would sometimes take over an hour to get it down. Then I did cream of chicken soup for my mid-day meal. I love sweet tea so I replaced it with caffeine-free tea with a twist of lemon. I also tricked my mind with chewable vitamins and called them my treats. I am concerned that you are not getting protein, they have vegetarian protein powder a plant-based protein that you could mix in warm soup. You need to ask your doctor or dietician for some help.

How Soon Did You Get A Date?

I was approved in December, and wanted to have my surgery in December before the end of the year for insurance reasons. The paperwork was submitted and two days later I was approved! I didn't even have two weeks before surgery since they were squeezing me in before the end of the year. I didn't have a liquid diet at all (surgeons are all different on these things) but I had to be very low fat and vegetarian. That dashed my birthday plans of all you can eat Brazilian steakhouse dinner, but it was so worth it! I would say it just depends on your surgeon's schedule and your surgery coordinator. I imagine some are busier than others and your experience will depend on an opening. I am sure my wait time would have been more if they weren't trying to accommodate my surgery before the end of the year.
  20. I'm so excited and I want to tell everyone but I can't.. I've decided to keep this journey of my life very personal to close friends and my immediate family. I'm so happy that I belong to such a great support system such as this group. I wanted to know if there are any vegetarians out there. My hubby and I have been vegetarian for over 8 months.
  21. You can go the natural route: Goldenseal as antibiotic/antiviral and Vitamin C (high doses) & Echinacea for immune support. Probiotics (commercial form or kimchi/sauerkraut/kombucha) to return gut microbiotic balance Check mineral levels (zinc is used in a lot of natural cold remedies) Protective medicinal teas (research heavily first) Switching your diet up (organic, non GMO, gluten free, vegetarian, raw, etc. to see if there is a difference) Eliminate allergens (food and environmental like carrageenan and mold) Ponder if it's stress or work related (certain jobs can make you ill through constant exposure to XYZ) Run these ideas past your primary doctor/bariatric team and see what they think. Ask to be tested for everything that can cause chronic illness as well. (Don't forget STIs) Safe Journey!

Time To Have The Band Removed..?

Oh goodness - I think the sooner we both get a correct diagnosis the better! My GP is on holiday for the next week so waiting to request choose and book for an endoscopy and see if they accept or reject my request. Still drinking gaviscon but not as much thankfully. I joined weight watchers as I wanted the online food diary to keep a track of what I was eating and since I had my band emptied I have lost 4kgs.... but I have friends and family also doing this as well so lots of support. I would add that I can now eat healthy stuff - lots of vegetables and fruit and am considering going vegetarian at least 3 days a week. Onwards and upwards - I am sure we will get to the bottom of theses problems - we just have to wait for everyone else to pay attention!

    No No Food

I wasn't given any sort of no-no's other than to eat healthfully. I haven't tried bread (I'm actually scared to, for both the sleeve-upsetting factor and the trigger-food factor). I decided not to re-incorporate foods like Pasta, rice, potatoes, baked goods back into my diet, since I don't miss them and don't need them. I also decided to keep high-sugar and fried foods off the menu more or less permanently because my sleeve hates them. I eat the types of Protein my sleeve will tolerate (mostly vegetarian and dairy), plus I eat carbs in moderation. I am not especially carb-sensitive, so this keeps me happy and satisfied. I just ate about a cup of popcorn (yum!) and I usually enjoy a margarita at Friday afternoon happy hour with a colleague. Bottom line, I think every individual has to arrive at an eating plan that fits his/her lifestyle, sleeve tolerance, weight loss goals, and health. You'll know if you try something and it doesn't work!!

What foods keep you full longest?

= Cream of Wheat. (Not made too thick - but just the right consistency) If I can spoon it easily, it goes in easily. A quick bowl (one Instant packet) of Cream of Wheat leaves me full a good long while. (I like the flavours, but original is OK too. I sometimes add a packet of Splenda, but either way, it totally is Band-friendly. = Quizno's Soups. One $1.99 cup (or if I'm semi-starving, a $2.99 bowl) of their new Seasonal Soups totally are like a meal. I prefer the Seasonal soups in "Green Chile Chicken" or the totally vegetarian "Mushroom Bisque". (The Broccoli & cheese is OK but the new soups, totally rock!) Both are creamy (I don't count calories) and filling. There are quick, economical and perfect for lunch or dinner. They come with packs of Saltine crackers (yuck, I hate those) but I skip those and still end up with a great meal. I'll try to think of some more quick, filling, little gems.
  25. WOW her kids are on a gluten free, lacto-free, vegetarian diet? Wow, I would consider that child neglect in some form. Malnution is so easy with adults... Kids I am sure can be stunted in their development with such a diet. Maybe your friend needs an damn intervention! You sound sane to me =).
