    Some happy raves:)

Here are some products I've discovered recently that I really like: Aldi has Keto buns. Awesome ones. I'm not a keto person, but I love these cause of the dietary (oat) fiber they pump them up with to make them keto. For 60 little calories....you get 8g of Protien, and a whopping 19g of Dietary fiber!!!! They've got 21g of carbs, but with the fiber, net carbs of only 2g. They're a small size, so not overwhelming for the small stomach crowd. Throw 2 ounces of Aldi Chicken Breast on there with some lettuce and tomato, and you've got an excellent little sandwich with 18g of Protien and 19g of Dietary Fiber....for only 135 calories! Diet Orange Julius smoothy. This hits the spot when I'm having a desert craving. Here's the recipe...roughly...adjust to taste. Three one inch pieces frozen banana, two large frozen strawberries, half cup of orange juice, splash of vanilla, half a cup 30 calorie almond milk (or skim cow milk), sweetener of choice (I use splenda and monkfruit). Blend this in your smoothie maker, sit on the porch and enjoy this drink that'll make you think of the mall in the late 80's / early90's. Good stuff! Monkfruit, but not the commercial brands, they suck. Go on Amazon and get real concentrated monkfruit drops with no added ingredients. (I like Monk Drops). For some people, Monkfruit has an aftertaste, for some it tastes incredibly close to real sugar with no aftertaste. I'm one of the lucky ones. I never had luck with Stevia because Stevia has a horrific aftertaste for me, but Monkfruit tastes terrific. If you're one of the people that gets an aftertaste from Monkfruit I apologize in advance. But I could drink the stuff straight and find it delicious. Maple Grove Farms Sugar Free Maple Syrup. I hate most sugar free maple syrups. This one has Excellent taste. 20 calories in HALF A CUP. If you like protien oatmeal pancakes...you need this. I also pour this on my steal cut oats. Homemade fried chicken! I have never made fried chicken in my life. Recently attended a healthy cooking class where we made keto fried chicken! Again, I'm not a huge keto fan, but this chicken was so good, I'd make it anyway. To start with, only the coating is fried...the chicken itself is boiled. We boiled the chicken until it was completely cooked in salty seasoned water...think bay leaves, sage, salt and pepper, thyme. Then we cooled the chicken and put cashews through the blender to make cashew flour. Wet your chicken with milk/egg wash and roll it in cashew flour with spices and about two tablespoons of flour fry mix mixed in. Coat it a couple times if you want. Then, flash fry it in 350 degree oil. You could probably do this in the air fryer, too? (I have not tried this) I actually submerged mine in oil....only for about a minute to make it nice golden brown. Yep, you've got some fat content and calories from the oil....but it's NOT greasy. The outside is crispy crunchy and the inside is moist and flavorful. A large chicken leg prepared this way only has about 150 calories, lots of protien, and hits the spot for summer picnics. Chickpea pasta salad. Love this. Everyone has a favorite pasta salad recipe. Mine goes sorta like this... Chickpea pasta, cherry tomatos, kalamata olives, reduced fat salami, English cukes, red onion, tiny diced swiss, diced bananna pepper....Dressing is Good Seasoning Italian dressing packet with balsamic vinegar, splenda, water, extra light olive oil. My beloved Chocolate Fudge Yasso frozen yogurt bars. 80 calories of "you'll never want icecream again". 6g of protien, too. I'll admit it. When I hit that incredibly horrible day when I want to eat a half gallon of ice cream.....I've been known to get a box of fudge Yassos and eat them all. But here's the difference. A four pack of Yassos is 320 calories and 24g of protien. Even feeling like I'm drowning my sorrows in ice cream....it's not a completely horrible nutritional choice. A little high in sugar, but not world ending. It is my emotional tantrum junkfood of choice. And while I try NOT to do this kinda maniac disordered eating anymore....it's nice to have a plan for when my brain slips once in a blue moon. (and it's a hell of a lot better than eating a half gallon of blue moon for instance) LOL A shot of Mio in iced tea can be superb! Crockpot sweet carrots with spenda instead of honey. They taste terrific. Black beans with salt and pepper, corn on the cob, and a plate of tomato slices with fresh basil, olive oil and a slice of fresh mozerella. And watermelon, of course:) OH! And another favorite....this one is slightly naughty. Strawberries mashed with splenda, chunks of mango, and a splash of ameretto liqueur. Eat this like strawberry shortcake, only use oat protien pancakes instead of shortcake. Happy Summer, Folks! If you've found some especially good diet-ey foods or products, be sure to mention them to the rest of us!

No problem. I guess I'm referring to insulin resistance effect on different diets mentioned in the book. I certainly don't agree that the keto he pushes is sustainable or healthy.

  4. How about treating myself while on keto diet with diet pepsi or diet rootbeer. Have always drank it before with sleeve. I see mixed reviews, all say "legally" it passes because it has no sugar, 50% say they do it, 50% say they feel the sugar substitute will confuse system MAYBE taking you out of keto temporarily... Any knowledge on this? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    First Nutrition Visit

My appointments usually started with weigh in and BP. The appointments were quick and I saw a weight loss DR and a nutritionist, and we spoke about refining my diet pre-surgery. Mine put me on a 100 grams of Carbs or less/day eating plan. No calorie limit - think Keto. I had to show that I was able to lose. I dropped 26 lbs in the 3 mos prior to surgery. I am still seeing my nutritionist but now it is every other month. I have Aetna Ins.
  6. Oh boy... I tried the creamer when I tried keto and wow was it not for me.
  7. Hey there! I was wondering if I could get some feedback from individuals who have combined bariatric surgery with the ketogenic diet, and what your progress has been with it. Specifically wondering if you've seen it maximize your weight loss.
  8. Here's a great thread from my keto community about IF and ketosis https://www.ketovangelist.com/fasting-destroys-your-cells-and-thats-a-good-thing/ Also, Dr. Jason Fung, MD is the be all, end all when it comes to IF. Tons of videos and books https://www.dietdoctor.com/authors/dr-jason-fung-m-d
  9. The Ketovangelist way of keto doesn't have you mind your calories in that way. Check this link out https://www.ketovangelist.com/the-calorie-hypothesis/ Calories are more of a guide to make sure you don't drop below your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). Most folks do well taking an average of their BMR and maintenance calories and using that number as a guide to create their macros. Here's an excellent TDEE calculator https://tdeecalculator.net/ (just don't let it make your macros - it's WAY off) Constantly eating below your BMR causes stalls and gains so that happy medium between your BMR and maintenance seems to prevent that and keep you burning fat and sparing muscle. Have you found an FB group for bariatric folks doing keto? There has to be one. I'm not sure how pre-op keto will translate to post-op since most post-op folks are eating low fat. I'm sure I'll eventually be seeking out a group. Let me know if you find one you like.
  10. Do you use a blood meter to check your ketone level by chance? I'm curious what hardcore ketosis looks like post-op vs. pre-op just eating keto. Currently I keep my ketones at about 1.7 - 2.0 mmol and it is VERY hard to keep this up. To measure blood ketones I have a KetoMojo meter.
  11. Hey guys I had my surgery in 2013 5 years out I've gained back about 20 lbs from my lowest weight (210 to 230). I know I have to eat better and thinking about starting this diet for the new year. Have you tried it? Did you like it? Did you not? Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. @SteveT74 You're my kinda dude! You have this keto thing down! Way to go! You're right though...from my time on here and hearing what other have to say, I sounds like eating true keto with bypass might be harder to pull off considering the diet requires you eat high fat and moderate protein. Who knows though? I think if you can eat at least eat a 1:1 fat/protein ratio you'll be good. I sure as heck will try when the time comes! You're also right about pee sticks. They're worthless. If you're peeing out ketones, your body isn't using them for energy. Also, if you're dehydrated you will pee ketones so they're not reliable at all. When it comes to measuring what your body is creating itself and using for energy, it's going to be blood ketones. Pee sticks may be good for diabetics or something, but if you're going to eat a true ketonian diet, get a KetoMojo meter to test your blood. It's an excellent investment and easy to use. We need to keep in touch
  13. I'm the same way. Total agreement. We've been LC (I don't even refer to it as keto) for so dang long, it's just the way we eat. And I love our lean protein and veg and a tiny bit of fruit/nuts/seeds. Mr. F. feels the same way! The more meat I let myself eat, the hungrier I get btw. For me, meat is insulinogenic and can wake up my hunger. So I'm better off if I just bargain with my bad self to eat only my 3oz portion and shut up about it!

    Ketosis - getting desperate...

Patience grasshoppah! I agree with Tea. Go back to do one thing at a time. Go back to your old way of eating LC or Keto or whatever you choose to call it. You are likely hungry with it cuz you're keeping fats pretty low. Maybe up your fats and see if it helps with satiety? But when I say "up" them, I'm not talking fat bombs or desserts, or lots of added dietary fat. I'm talking about: 1. Switch from boneless skinless breasts to breasts with the skin. Or switch to thighs. Or eat beef pot roast. Or eat pork shoulder. These cuts naturally have more fat in the meat and so have more calories and are more satiating. Also if you are only eating 2oz per meal (by weight) of protein, try eating 3oz. if you are eating 3oz per meal, try eating 4oz. until you hit your daily protein goal. If you hit your goal easily and go over on protein...then you may need to look at re-apportioning your protein/veggie serving size to fit your macros. I'd add a small salad with vinaigrette to each meal if that happened. I rarely eat more than 3oz per meal cuz I don't need the extra protein. 2. Eat 1-2oz by weight of al dente veggies. Add 1tsp of fat to them (avo oil, evoo, coconut oil, butter, ghee, animal fat) or add up to 1oz avocado, or 1/2oz by weight of nuts/seeds. 3. Eat 3 meals per day. Try not to snack. If you are hungry allow a snack composed of these (choose one): a. String Cheese b. Hard Boiled Egg c. 1oz dense dry protein. This will put you in ketosis big time by the end of about 4 days. You will lose 2-4lbs of water from it as your liver dumps glycogen and the attached molecules of water it holds. Then do that for a month and don't worry about it. That's your new diet. As your pouch matures, you will need to revise it to add more fat/calories to your day, or continue to choose more fat dense meats/dishes. If you are struggling with weight loss, I would stick to this and I would avoid calorie dense complex meals such as casseroles, stews, gooey, cheesy stuff. I'd stick to clean meats, healthy fats, al dente veggies. Hope that helps! Congrats on your losses!!!!! Don't stress, don't worry! For me eating in maintenance is longer than 2months with no loss on the scale or by the tape measure. For me a stall is 3 weeks without a change on the scale or by the tape measure. Other people have different definitions.

    K I S S

I never drove a car. Never. Ever in my life. Not for 18 years. And then there was the day when I drove a car for the first time. I never stented a carotid artery. Never. Ever in my life. Not for 41 years. And then there was the day when I did it for the first time. So the answer to your question is: If you never learnt good food habits in the fist place - learn to have them now! This is not about magic! This is about learning new skills by practicing them! Practicing them over and over and over and OVER again, until they feel like second nature to your brain. Honestly? Some people have to learn the hard way that this particular way didn't work for them. You can provide help/guidance along the way but in the end people choose their own way and that is not always the way that works out fine. Some people need a second chance because they messed up first. If these people are honest with themselves they should realize that they made mistakes along the way and now they have a chance to do it in another way. If they choose to make the same mistakes... well, not everyone will be successful. In the end it's just as simple as that. What rubs me the wrong way is that so many people seem to come back with a regain after they were quite successful and are on their way to make the same mistakes again, fueled by the "advice" to "go back to basics" and to "try harder". And because they were so successfully losing once they try to do the same thing they did back then - not realizing that they're making the same mistakes by going back to these same old strategies that didn't work in the first place for them. You're gung-ho about it, you eat low carb/lowfat/keto/lowcalorie/whateverrocksyourboat, you go to the gym five times a week, you follow all these fancy rules, you do this, you do that and more and then... something happens, whatever that something might be for this person and BOOM - things go down the drain. And what are you going to do then? Trying again to live a lifestyle that's obviously not going to make you happy? Or are you taking a leap of faith and try something different?

    Regret

Ok, this is very important!!! Having the certainty that there is an "end" to the suffering is very critical. I'm pre-surg, but have been through really huge reconstruction surgeries on my boobs/back after a double mastectomy. And it hurt so badly, the only way I knew I could do it was because I knew that each day out would/should be better than the one before and that there would come a day when the suckage would be over. We can get through anything for a short time, especially if the reward is great. So I loved the idea someone said about thinking about all the good things coming in your future, as you endure each day and check that day off your list! Right?! Also, I have written this before, but my nephew is a surgeon and told me that any time you go in and mess with the gut (even just touching or moving it), you will deal with post-op transient depression. It releases hormones that jack with your mood cuz it's part of the gut/brain axis. Then too, you're not fully (most of us) keto adapted, so your mood is further affected by having little to no food, you're getting over anesthesia, you're bloated from IV fluids, not sleeping well, and in pain. It's the perfect storm for fatigue, crying jags, and daily naps. Treat yourself gently and with love. Nap when you feel like it. Move slowly. Take it one step at a time and don't forget to breath! ((hugs))
  17. No judgment, Glad you are asking for help Gains can happen to any of us. (I’ve had one) Weight loss mode and maintaining is work. None of this is easy, right? Reality is its not going to be easy. But you can do some things to turn this around. Therapy and counseling may help you address your relationship with food, why your discipline is lacking and getting back on track. Your surgeon can talk to you about all your options. Doing this on your own or with help is a mental battle. Except that you will feel crappy and have cravings while you detox off the extra calorie’s carbs and sugar. Many go back to bariatric basics, keto paleo vegan. Log your food is the only way you will know if you are eating your weight loss calories and macros. Joining a weight loss challenge can help you stay on track. Keep us updated. Your battle with this is going to help others dealing with the same situation. Many come here looking for solutions and then disappear from the site. I hope you stay around and give people insight from your experience.

    Keto

I actually have less issues when I am on low carbs. I am really gassy since the surgery. The days that I eat less carbs I don’t have that issue. As far as high calories, I’m not absorbing a lot of that fat. I’ve started keto... for those who are interested I’ll keep you updated. Again, this is not a lifestyle thing. I got an ok from a PA I know, so here I go...

    Keto after sleeve

i do low carb 50g or less daily but i don't do keto because the protein level is to restrictive for my taste. if you can meet your marco's and get your micro nutrients from those levels i don't see a problem. surgeons don't like anything that is not down the middle good for all cause they don't have time for one on one care so all the programs are designed to fit the avg. and cause the least problems. track carefully and get regular blood panels and be prepared to stop if any issues come up in your blood work. good luck and enjoy
  20. had regain too- 45 lbs!! lost all of it on strict Keto, but just now starting some HIIT using a jump box and fitness ropes at home. Hard stuff but hoping to see some serious body changes in the coming weeks. This is a lifetime battle for us- I laugh in people's faces when they remark about surgery being the 'easy way out'....
  21. I saw my doctor today and got weighed just to see if the scale is different there than at home. I am 380, which of course I am happy about - but like I said, much of that was from the Optifast prior to surgery. I am not going to focus on the scale, but like I said before I was expecting a bit more of a woosh of weight loss since having the surgery. As I said before, I lost 20 ponds in two weeks just doing keto and moving a bit more - again I know that is water weight and also that wouldn't continue, but it was a great feeling nonetheless at the time. I agree with your points about nonscale victories and a month from now, I may be singing an entirely different tune on here. I was just thinking outloud and giving my initial thoughts per this thread. Thanks for the support. HM

    Immi Ramen

I'd been eyeing this product since Facebook and Instagram started sending me ads. It's low carb keto ramen with 6g carbs, 21g protein and 890 mg sodium and 18g fiber. I found they sell them individually at Whole Foods (because I am NOT buying a $35 pack knowing there's a huge risk me and my stomach don't like it for some reason). Planning to run out to buy a pack or two tonight just out of curiosity and eat half a pack or maybe a fourth just for a taste (and also because it's 300 calories for an entire pack) But before I do, I'm wondering if anyone has tried Immi ramen and if so how did you like it? Did it have a weird aftertaste like a lot of protein infused products (it all tastes like whey to me)? Since my surgery I've been really weird about textures now and I've seen a couple reviews complaining about texture of the noodles but I want to try this since it has a nice amount of protein and fiber and I have to do a bit of doctoring to shirataki noodles, moreso than what I feel like being bothered with some days lol
  23. Hell everyone 5yr out from Sleeve this month so frustrated gained 30lbs after Neck Surgery 2017 been on Keto lose 13lbs still struggling Ughh

    Embarrassing question

Keto breath.. unfortunately breath spray or similar is the only thing that seems to help. Hopefully you don’t also get the keto rash, which is no fun!

Did I lose too much to qualify?

So this is what I was thinking too.... bulky clothes and drink a ton of water beforehand BUT my next appointment (and last appointment) is with my new nutritionist before they send it in to insurance. I've been doing a diet (keto) under doctor's supervision but then my surgeon's nutritionist specifically said "I need to know that you can follow OUR lifestyle plan in order for me to sign off on you"... so then that makes me think that she needs to see that I can lose weight following her specific rules [emoji86][emoji86][emoji86] ughhhh. I'm in such a pickle. Do you think maybe if I call her and I am just transparent about it that she would be understanding of my situation? Or talk to the PA and ask them if they can send in one of my higher weights instead when sending in the approval packet? I'm not sure how morally sound it is to even ask them [emoji51] Honestly, I am desperate. This whole conversion surgery is something I've put so much time and effort into. It's been years in the making. I've changed my lifestyle because I know that it is just a tool... thinking that if I change my habits now that it will make it easier for me to adjust when I do have restriction again. It just sucks to know that that is not being taken into account
