Favorite Sugar free or alternative foods?

Forget snacks entirely unless they are protein or vegetable. They grease the slippery slope to regaining what you have lost. I speak from experience. I am approaching RNY revision and I will not make the same mistakes again. The pre-op food plan and the (clear/full liquid/puree) stages post op while we are not getting hungry give us the opportunity to establish a new way of eating. If we seek sugar-free or keto snacks we are merely making some substitutes for the OLD way of eating. It's too easy to find ourselves eating sugared and carbohydrate snacks and food when we don't happen to have the "-free" type. Just because substitute snack foods are sold on bariatric sites does not mean they are good for us. If we are wise we will ignore those products. Eat whole foods, fresh or frozen vegetables and fruits, quality poultry and meat products. Avoid sugar, sugar substitutes, wheat/flour products, and processed foods. We can get plenty of tasty food to eat with these choices. I encourage you to obtain and read these two books by Dr. Matthew Weiner: A Pound of Cure and The Bariatric Guide and Cookbook. There are lots of other bariatric cookbooks available, too, including some for Air Fryers, InstaPots, and CrockPots. These will help you learn your new way of eating.

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

Thank you for letting me know… did your nutrition tell you to be on a keto diet for a year after surgery. I just made up my own food selection. I better look at the paperwork… I don’t want to gain anything back.

    Keto Diet

Ditto! I did keto as well. I didnt lose as much as sleevediva2022 but I did gain it all back as soon as I stopped tracking everything I ate and I got back up to my highest weight again. I believe I had lost 40 lbs and gained 45 lbs back.

    Keto Diet

Not imo. It works for some people but I think you need a certain psychology around food I just don't have...not to mention guts of steel haha I did keto like 2 years ago in one of my many pursuits to lose weight. I had diarrhea every single day all the time. I did lose 10 lbs in 3 weeks but when I stopped, I gained it all back plus more! Not my proudest moment. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Embarrassing question

Keto breath.. unfortunately breath spray or similar is the only thing that seems to help. Hopefully you don’t also get the keto rash, which is no fun!

    Pre-op diet tips?

Broccoli isn’t a starchy food. Basically if it grows under the ground it’s a starchy vegetable. There are above ground exceptions like corn, sweet potatoes, peas, pumpkins which are starchy. I was put on keto but my friend followed a 2 shakes plus one meal of lean protein & vegetables (steamed preferred) diet. But no snacks, no dressings, no sauces, no dairy except milk in her tea or coffee. She grilled or roasted her meat & just steamed or microwaved her vegetables. She could add vinegar or lemon juice & any herbs or spices to flavour her meats & vegetables. I know she made omelettes a few times & baked some fish (made foil parcels with various herbs) besides basic meat & vege meals. Non starchy vegetables: Artichokes Asparagus Bean sprouts Brussels sprouts Broccoli Cabbage Cauliflower Celery Cucumber Eggplant (also known as aubergine) Mushrooms Onions Peppers (also known as capsicum) Salad greens Spinach Tomato Turnips Zucchini (also known as courgette)
  7. Ive fought my weight all my life- sometimes healthy, but most of the time overweight, so dieting wasn’t new it me, BUT after covid and hitting peri/menopause, the weight came to stay. I was miserable- joint pain, pre-diabetic- and couldn’t lose weight no matter what - even on my usual low carb/keto path. Tried metformin—ugh, Tried contrave- Wellbutrin/naltroxene combo— sicker than a dog and scared of messing with my mental health. HRT was causing the weight to climb- and in november had hysterectomy - and by February hit my highest weigh of 195, Called and got a local Bariatric surgeon consult. Went in and discussed it- decided on VSG. I was NOT going to hit 200 - none of my clothes fit and everything hurt. Found out the process could be months log- so I got on internet and had Mexico- flights, surgeon and two days off work booked and planned for the next month. It cost me about as much as out of pocket would have cost me in the states and i was able to lose weight before surgery- where if id stayed in states, i could have been denied if i lost anything (MX requirement was BMI of 30, states was 35 and comorbitities, i think) I was READY-and was NOT in the mood to wait. So decided Feb 3, and surgery March 3. So glad i did it!

    Ketogenic diet post-surgery?

I am 15 months post op (sleeve). I went to see my nut, recently, because I hit a wall. We spoke quite a bit about the Keto plan. She said that we who have had WLS not longer absorb the way we once did. She had the concern even though I take all my vitamins daily. She said that we as WLS patients need to have the protein over the fruit and veggies (think eat proteins first then the rest of the meal). If I keep up with the protein and reduce the fats, she is ok. Of course, this does change Keto a lot. So, I continue to investigate those who have had surgery and have done Keto without any issues.

    regret not doing this sooner

I totally understand wishing you'd had the surgery early. I've always been a painfully slow loser due to PCOS and it's so frustrating to see people losing 25+ pounds the first 2 weeks while I lost 15 and am hitting the 3 week stall early. If one more person says something about "well people with a higher starting weight lose more" to me I will scream. I was 282 on the day of surgery. That's a pretty damn high weight. I had someone tell me my weight loss on the pre op diet was "slower than keto" and I laughed because I've never had rapid weight loss on keto and my pre op weight loss was exactly the same to the amount I lost on keto in the same time. I wish I'd had surgery at a lower weight so my goal didn't seem so far away.
  10. Which store please? Also a massive cauli fan here - hangover from my keto days when I must have eaten it almost every day in some form. And celeriac (celery root). Makes nice pretend fries baked in the oven with oil, and also very low carb and low calorie. I have never tried cauli as wings - definitely gonna give that a go - thank you for that idea!

    Feeling defeated

I was doing keto to loose weight prior to surgery. Since surgery I have been following the diet as ordered. I haven’t deviated once. Even with the pre-op diet I only lost 7 pounds. Mine wasn’t liquid and I could have one salad a day with fat free dressing. I was just discouraged today bc the scales isn’t moving and I have my 6 week follow up coming up. At my 2 week, the doctor seems surprised that I had only lost 7 pounds. Everyone has been so encouraging. It was what I needed today. I will continue doing what I am suppose to do and find other things to focus on besides the scale. TY

    Keto

I actually have less issues when I am on low carbs. I am really gassy since the surgery. The days that I eat less carbs I don’t have that issue. As far as high calories, I’m not absorbing a lot of that fat. I’ve started keto... for those who are interested I’ll keep you updated. Again, this is not a lifestyle thing. I got an ok from a PA I know, so here I go...
  13. Hi guys, I ran a search but not much popped up. I've been on a ketogenic diet (high fat, moderate Protein, very low carb - basically the induction to Atkins except you keep it up forever) for the last 15 months. I know it's not a very well-understood diet and gets a lot of flak, but it's been great for me. I'm healthier than I've ever been and I adore this style of eating so much. The only problem is I hit a wall hard in the weight-loss department, hence the surgery. I'm wondering if anyone has had experience eating this way post-op? I know low-fat gets pushed a lot in surgeon-recommended diets, but I'm not sure if that's because low-fat is part of the government's idea of a healthy diet, or if there's an actual physical purpose? I think some people have mentioned fatty foods made them sick, but are they talking about doughnuts, or ribeye? If it's not possible then I'll accept it and just stay as low carb as possible, but I would really like to stick with keto after surgery if possible and am looking for reasons it might not be a good idea.

    Hello!!

Hi!! Im new here 🤗 (but have been lurking for months 😂😂) I started my journey for WLS in March of this year, Im looking to have VSG, my insurance has a 6 month period before approval.. Ive also struggled with weight all my life.. Ive been working out with a Personal Trainer since 2012 and I will admit tht my dedication has been more geared towards the workout vs. diet. I have tried Atkins lost 50 lbs and gained it back plus some, Keto, diet pills, calorie counting.. and still have yet to break 300 lbs (except for whn i did atkins).. I am so happy to have found this App because I love to hear the success stories as well as the bad stories (evn tho they scare me 😳).. I have 1 thing left to check off and then I guess ill be waiting for the approval from my insurance and thn on to surgery... On one hand im like no dont do and thn the other im like you have done all of the test and been to so many appts just do it lol.. Hopefully ill b on the Losers Bench soon!!
  15. had regain too- 45 lbs!! lost all of it on strict Keto, but just now starting some HIIT using a jump box and fitness ropes at home. Hard stuff but hoping to see some serious body changes in the coming weeks. This is a lifetime battle for us- I laugh in people's faces when they remark about surgery being the 'easy way out'....

    Keto

True Keto is very high fat (like >70 grams), moderate carb (30-45 grams) and very low carb (<20) a day. I am 4 years out and have been Keto for a while. My surgeon and docs are all for it, I used this to conquer some regain and also to resolve a health issue. It is quite different from a 'bariatric' diet. I don't drink milk or eat yogurt anymore, I follow the rules of keto, I eat my macros calculated out for me. They change as my weight goes down. I also incorporate Intermittent Fasting which also has made a huge difference. I will probably eat this way forever. There are tons of resources out there, especially on youtube and there are substitutes for EVERYTHING, but I try to stick to a very basic food list.

Sugar free deserts and heart healthy

Haven't had the surgery yet myself but there are many Keto recipes floating around that you can try that MAY work for us after surgery (as they are usually sugar free). Here are some of the ones I use periodically. As you can see they are sorta similar. Various Versions of Whips/Mousse Desserts 1 tub sugar free cool whip 1 block softened cream cheese 1/4 cup Swerve Mix with mixer until fluffy and store in fridge (scoop what you want, when you want). Can add in Lily's Sugar Free Chocolate Chips (in various flavors), berries, sugar free syrups, etc. 1 block softened cream cheese 1 box any flavor sugar free jello 1 cup heavy whipping cream Mix with mixer until fluffy. Scoop into small balls with scooper or use hands. Lay balls on parchment paper and put in fridge or freezer for a few hours. I store leftovers in and airtight container in the freezer. 1 package of sugar free pudding mix any flavor 2 cups heavy whipping cream Mix with hand mixer until fluffy. Top with sugar free chocolate chips, sugar free syrups, or berries. Since these call for Sugar Free Pudding mixes there are soooooo many flavor variations you can come up with. Peanut Butter Balls 8 oz softened cream cheese 4 oz creamy NATURAL Peanut Butter (ingredients should list nuts and salt only) 4 Tbsp Swerve 1/2 cups crushed dark chocolate chips, optional Mix together room temperature PB, cream cheese and sweetener. Stir until well mixed and smooth. Scoop into small balls or use your hands. Roll into crushed chocolate chips, optional. Arrange on parchment paper lined pan and put into freezer for 2 hours. Enjoy. Store remaining balls in airtight container and store in freezer. Sugar free whipped cream and some berries would be a good treat too. There are lots of recipe websites out there too dedicated to those who have had the surgery.

Am I a 'recovered' morbidly obese person?

Congrats! That is fantastic and inspiring. I don't know that I can help you explain why. But my philosophy is that once we're obese, we're always gonna be "recovering obese". Why? Cuz we've got all those hungry hungry fat cells and internal hormones and thoughts and even guts that want to get us back to obesity. I think maintenance is something unique to each of us according to the amount of brokeness?? But you're basically keto which is a great way to maintain. And you have a carb up day/meal. NBD. Keeps you healthy. Glad you can enjoy fats!!
  19. Hell everyone 5yr out from Sleeve this month so frustrated gained 30lbs after Neck Surgery 2017 been on Keto lose 13lbs still struggling Ughh
  20. Hey all! Woah, I didn’t mean to make this so long, but I’m a rambler. This is my first post and I'm not sure if it belongs here, but it’s going here lol. I’ve been battling depression and obesity since I was a child. I hit 200lbs when I was 12, and although I was an active dancer in highschool and walked so so so much (my friends and I were mallrats with no cars) and saw a nutritionist in my junior and senior year, I was probably around 215 when I graduated. For a 5’2”, 17 year old girl, that was already morbidly obese and it just went up from there. I was definitely in survival mode for the next few years, on a few antidepressants, working and going to school, just trying to live. The earliest data I have from my FitBit and MyFitnessPal has be at 275lb in 2016, and I know I went up to the 290s in 2017, because 2017 is a blank on my trackers, and knowing me, I was too ashamed to record it. The next I have is 273 in 2018. I went off my antidepressants around the end of 2017, and while I was mentally “white-knuckling” it, I started losing weight. But it was very much a lose 10lbs, gain 15-20 cycle. Then my birth control made it worse. At the beginning of this year, I was stuck in a plateau of 231, and I talked to my doctor about my disordered eating, and she got me a therapist and I got myself a personal trainer. At that doctors appt, I almost asked for a referral for surgery, but chickened out and asked for a therapist and a nutritionist instead. Love my therapist, but the nutritionist wanted me on a 1200 cal diet that didn't mesh with disordered eating at all. An important note here, is that my mother, who has passed, had the RYGB circa 2002. So surgery has always been in the back of my mind. After a series of unfortunate events in March, I lost 10lbs rapidly and realized my bmi (40) was at the cut off for surgery with no comorbidities. At the beginning of April I asked my doctor for a surgery referral. She offered me Wegovy or Saxenda, but I really can’t see myself using injectables for the rest of my life, so she went ahead with the referral. Had the first consultation a little over a week later, did a few zoom classes, completed forms, did the psych eval (actually awful), and today I got an email saying my insurance approved me and my program would contact me soon for a date. My reasoning is that I see my trainer twice a week and my therapist and I are working on my relationship with food, but I’m getting older and I have that historic lose/gain cycle, and my weight has been a source of unhappiness literally my entire life. Surgery isn’t going to fix everything, I know that, I’ve talked to my therapist about that, but she and I agree this would be a great tool for me in conjunction with the other changes I’m making. My trainer, who is a family friend, doesn’t like the idea. But she’s only known me as an adult, she doesn’t see that a lifetime of yo-yo dieting and trying to stay active isn’t cutting it when I’m still carrying an extra 100lbs. A close member of my family wants me to do keto again, because that was my biggest diet win, but that also didn’t mesh with my disordered eating in the long run. Since my consult, I’ve lost about another 6lbs, firmly putting me where I was when I was a teenager, which is a surreal feeling, but it’s being used as proof that I can “do it on my own.” Honestly, my mindset is that I’m eating less in preparation for surgery. There’s been memes shared on instagram stories of people who I know must know I want to get wls done, calling the surgery “body mutilation” and how “surgeons regret performing bariatric surgeries because it's unnatural.” It makes me doubt myself, like is this just my depression wanting to “mutilate” myself, or is this me trying to overcome my depression and finally do something for myself? What was it for my mother? I was too young to ask her these questions and now I can't. This is a very long post to ask; I’m doing the right thing, right? Am I being rational and making sense? I know I can lose the weight, but keeping it off is constantly clawing and if I slip now just a little, the lose/gain cycle could catch up, and I'm so tired of it.
  21. I have not had lap band but I have had two prior bariatric surgeries that failed. I am now going to have RNY Gastric Bypass revision at age 73. I have learned a lot since I started on this path 6 months ago. Good for you for moving forward toward a healthy weight. However, I'm concerned that you have not learned how to eat differently yet. Consider the possibility that you are a sugar/food addict. If you are, Keto is not the answer for you. You need to change your habits entirely. I strongly recommend some reading for you. Choose at least one book from each of these groups. Finally, conclude with Success Habits of Weight Loss Patients. Get started now. Apparently you have already had the surgery, so there is no time to be lost.

    AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!

breakfast this morning on Day 1. Or should I say Brunch, cuz I just ate it. Turned out to be one of my Psylli Egg McBiscuits The biscuits are one of my creations and are totes legal for CAMAW! Warning this biscuit is a total gut bomb. You have to have ZERO swallowing issues and be fully hydrated BEFORE eating it! I used different ingredients for this one, but you can read the cooking instructions here on my old - now defunct blog. http://fluffychixcook.com/egg-fast-breakfast-biscuit-low-carb-keto-breakfast-yum/
  23. Hi Amy, Since the surgery, I have found that I like to have easy meals ready to grab. I do enjoy cooking, though, too. For breakfast, I often have a protein shake or yogurt with protein (oikos triple zero or light & fit). Sometimes, I may have oatmeal (can add protein powder, there are some brand that have it added), frozen lower carb or keto waffles with protein & sugar-free syrup, or low carb/keto bread with cheese or egg. You can find cooked hard boiled eggs in dairy section. There are also those "just crack an egg" microwave meals (I haven't tried them). For easy lunches I often have yogurt, Oscar Mayer P3 snacks or Sargento Balanced breaks, 1/2 sandwich with low carb bread turkey & low fat cheese. (I don't know if you are ready to eat nuts, yet, I know they need to be chewed well & controlled portion sizes) An easy dinner I found was a frozen pizza made with a chicken based crust. There are some frozen keto meals i have seen, but haven't tried. Other easy items are: frozen cooked shrimp, cooked grilled chicken from supermarkets deli, & microwave riced cauliflower. I hope you get some ideas. I am always looking for new foods to incorporate into my routine, too.

My doctor wants me to have this done-->help...questions

What is keto? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Keto is high fat, low carb moderate protein. My daily macros look kind of like this... 25 g Carbs (9%, 100 kcal) 110 g Protein (41%, 440 kcal) 59 g Fat (50%, 528 kcal) I don't usually get that much fat in but I try, I always hit my protein goal. I very rarely have more than 15 net carbs in a day. I find is almost impossible to get a lot of carbs in, veggies don't really have them, and I don't eat other things, just meat and veggies.
