Hello. I had my sleeve gastrectomy on June 13. I lost 30 pounds prior to surgery and have since lost another 72 for a total of 102 pounds. I am ecstatic except I can barely eat anything. Initially, I figured my progress was just slow, so I didn’t rush the stages. Then it was discovered I had a stricture as I was throwing up any solid food. I’ve since had two endoscopy procedures, but things don’t seem much better. I am mostly on a soft diet as a lot of solid food, even if eaten in very small quantities and chewed very well, will cause me to throw up. Many foods cause diarrhea. In fact, I’ve had chronic diarrhea this entire time. My doctor says to wait another month before a third endoscopy. I am taking Imodium a couple of times a week to curb the diarrhea because it’s getting to be extremely irritating. I am barely eating because I can hardly tolerate anything, and I am having a very difficult time meeting my protein goal. Protein shakes cause extreme fullness and diarrhea and sometimes vomiting, so those are out. I do drink protein shots which go down well, and I pretty much live on fresh mozzarella cheese and yogurt. Even the thought of a lot of foods is a turn off because they aren’t appealing and make me gag or I’m afraid of how I’ll react and psych myself out. I am at a loss as to what to eat. Luckily, I am getting my water in, 64+ ounces per day, and I do eat Pedialyte popsicles to help with electrolyte loss which my providers are concerned about. I’ve researched and researched, but I’m finding nothing. Has anyone had this issue? How did you solve it?

Twisty stomach pains when eating/drinking
ChunkCat replied to ChunkCat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks @summerseeker! I'm fairly sure it is from my stomach being so new. I had this issue with my bladder after a hysterectomy, it was spastic for a while like it forgot how to work from all the nerves cut in the area and its position being moved. That's how my stomach feels right now. Thankfully I'm on Dexilant which is a very good PPI and ensures I have no acid issues. I metabolize omeprazole too quickly for it to work, which I thankfully found out BEFORE surgery! Anything thickened like a cream soup or yogurt with milk provokes the spasms really bad, so I think that will have to wait until I'm at the pureed stage, maybe by then the spasms will have stopped! I did try different temps because I was drinking everything room temp from the hospital. Turns out my stomach prefers either really icy drinks or hot ones, no in between. LOL I remember you saying you had prolonged nausea issues from the surgery. Did it come with spasms like this or was it just nausea and acidity? -
Twisty stomach pains when eating/drinking
summerseeker replied to ChunkCat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have a very raw surgery cut line in your tiny stomach. When we can not see it, we kind of forget the inside of us. All your nerves have been cut as well as the skin. It will take at least a month for you to be healed. When you do not eat real food the acid in our stomachs has nothing to work on and makes us feel nauseous. The liquids we drink do not make things any better as they swish about. It feels like a storm at sea. In time it gets better as you progress to better foods. If you haven't already done so, try warm, hot and frozen drinks. Warm worked for me. Try a little yogurt in your milk to thicken it a little if its on your plan. these will help with the spasms. I still take anti nausea meds 2 x a day. I have acid problems if I miss a dose -
I usually don't use artificial sweeteners either, neither adding it nor in products. I absolutely second fruit as@Arabesque mentioned. There are so many delicious sweet fruit. Peaches, crispy grapes, strawberries and more. They are wonderful for upgrading any yogurt, cottage cheese, oats... etc. If you like honey, that's a very healthy way to sweeten things too.

I am on day 2 of 14 of liquid diet for preop and did not realize I’m not supposed to have sippable soups or yogurt!!! Now I’m worried I’ve messed up my whole preop diet.

I was getting sick of the sweets like yogurt and protein shakes in my initial pureed stage, but I found a few more options once soft food came around. I actually like the Healthy Choice Lentil soup. Eggs were one of my favorites since there's a few ways to make it for variation. Typically one scrambled egg mixed with one tablespoon of cottage cheese so it's not as hard. Or just a soft boiled egg. Tuna packets were another. I would mix with cottage cheese and a tiny bit of light mayo. Adds more protein plus was smooth enough. And one recipe i was excited with since it made me feel like i was having a pasta dish/pizza taste was the Ricotta bake. https://bariatricbits.com/single-serve-baked-ricotta/

Movement and liquid diet ideas
NP_WIP replied to Longview Lady's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I made soup recipes for the family and just strained my portion of it into 3oz containers. I was allowed milk, bean soup, and yogurt during the full liquid, so I made that my main staples. I honestly did not exercise for the first month, and started walking after 5 weeks. -
What do YOU eat in a day and Stalling
Erin18 replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Real protein like chicken, steak, turkey, pork, eggs, cheese, pepperoni, sausage, yogurt etc. I can't stomach yogurt still and I'm starting to get sick of eggs. I dont get enough protein. I probably don't even get half of what I'm supposed to be getting. Today I only got around 42 grams of protein. It's hard to eat healthy too. It sucks when all the healthy food is so expensive, so we get the junk stuff because it is cheaper and lasts a little long. I want to focus on getting protein and greens and fruits starting this month. -

Hi had my surgery on Friday the 27th at 10:30 am and today is day 4!!! I feel really good today and each since the surgery I have been feeling better. When I woke up from surgery the only pain I had was from laying on my back unable to move during the operation coupled with the pain from my period, which of course had to start the day before. I spent a very long time in recovery because they did not have a room ready for me yet, that was about 3-4 hours. When I finally got to my room, being able to move around helped my back somewhat. The only bad thing for me was the nausea, I puked several times on Friday and a few times the next day when I woke up. I had the option to stay another night in the hospital, but I was eager to get the 130-mile ride back home done. Once home I only took one anti-nausea medication. I have not had any pain and very little gas. I am getting liquids down very well. My two-week diet consists of 5-6 mini-meals that are 2oz of either yogurt, pudding, creamy soup or vegetable juice. 1 protein shake and 48-64oz of liquids that are either water, broth, jello, herbal tea, crystal light, poweraide, or popsicles. low or no sugar for everything course I am finding it easy to eat more than 1 or 2 oz's at a time, this worries me a little. I am down to only one nap a day I am hoping soon I won't need a nap. -

Questions for pre surgery
Longview Lady replied to Longview Lady's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks CatWoman. Gotta say, though i'm Jewish I did not see my Bubby much and so no good ol' fashioned bone broth. Honestly, I have never heard of bone broth. I don't cook with chicken and bones - i'm too damn tired. Yes, I'm one of those quickie people who use can goods and boxes. Too time consuming and messy to take all the meat off the chicken. lol. i know, who is this woman? lol. Especially since my daughter moved out and just me - a lil yogurt with nuts, a healthy blender-made shake, a pizza on occasion - that is dinner. I do make some crock-pot meals on occasion. I'm hoping for better sleep and more energy after surgery and maybe i'll get out more and want to actually cook some 'meals'. ...so you say I can buy 'bone broth' at the store? lol. Yep, here we go with another can or box. lol. -
This is a favorite breakfast smoothie for me as well as my 15 year old daughter. I'm pre-op right now, just as an FYI, and my daughter is an active kid at a healthy weight who likes to start the day off with a quick, nutritious breakfast. I have a 16oz blender cup, and this fills it fully, but if you have a 22 oz or larger, it would let you make it a little thinner. For me, the ginger is key to masking any taste from the powder. I use the kind that comes in a squeeze bottle from the produce department. I don't add any sweetener and I personally love the natural flavor of it. The blueberries disguise the green from the spinach in case the color turns you off. You can weigh and measure everything to be sure how much you are getting the first time around, but I tend to just wing it now since I've done it so often. I may make some changes post-op based on nutritionist recommendations, but overall I think this is a pretty solid smoothie recipe that you can change up in several ways with different fruits. Oh, you can also use Greek yogurt instead of skyr if that's not as easy to find, but I'm a big fan of the Siggie's brand skyr. I also love to buy the mixed fruit blends from the freezer section to get lots of variety in one bag. All of the produce I use is frozen, including the avocado. Oh no! I just realized I entered hemp seed twice in my recipe. That should be a tsp of chia seed!

Traveling & staying on track
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to Authoa's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just read this post since I'm going to be traveling to Atlanta for a two day trip and started to plan the what/how I'd get my protein and fluids in while spending 7 hours in the air with a quick 1 hour lay over (not enough time to get to the plane transfer and grab something). I hadn't thought of getting yogurt for my protein powder -so thank you!!I did purchase plastic clear "test tubes" that have screw tops for my protein powder (they hold two scoops at 80mL each) and labeled them putting them into a make up carry bag along with my two four separate times per day vitamin organizers (its decided into 4 different times per day each one). I have family in the airline business and I'm all to well aware of the water holding tanks on aircraft that they've warned me about so I refuse to drink "aircraft tap" or coffee on flights, so bottled water for me. I also purchased no sugar/no additives nothing but roasted peanut butter in 3oz packets, low fat string cheese and protein bars.. Hopefully this will hold me over and get my protein requirements in. Oh, I'm also bringing a couple of packets of Crystal lite, not a fan of plain water, I tend to get nauseated drinking plain. Does anyone have any other suggestions? It's going to be a long day, at least 10 hours to finally get checked in at the hotel..so any suggestions help! Thanks. -
Cutting out sugar
Arabesque replied to Jessica Marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was an equal opportunity savoury & sweet eater. I eliminated most sugar in the weeks after surgery when anything with sugar, artificial sweeteners or sugar alternatives tasted extra crazy sweet & was off putting. I haven’t really let it back into my eating. I get my sweet from blueberries every day & the occasional additional serve of fruit. It can be hard to eliminate it & the alternatives completely. It is added to just about everything in firm or another. I know I have about 5g of added sugar (multigrain crackers I eat) a day & some artificial sweetener (yogurt, protein bar & peanut paste) but that’s it. And none of these things taste sweet. I will have dessert at Christmas but that all I have of traditional sweet food. (I did have a small piece of wedding cake earlier this year.) There is some sugar in the rare G&T I have. None of these things make me crave sweet again. I remember during Covid, when the grocery shelves were bare, I could only buy a box of honey instant rolled oats - it was awful, super sweet & I couldn’t eat it. Personally, I’d rather eat something with real sugar than artificial sweetener - that stuff is so bad for you. Good luck. -
Cutting out sugar
ChunkCat replied to Jessica Marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I quit slowly, just using things up at home and not buying more. Then once that was done, a few weeks later I started introducing a few artificially sweetened things. Unlike a lot of people, Im not anti-fake sugar. But I need a break from sweets for the fake stuff to taste good. I still use moderation even with fake sugars, but I like flavor packets in my water sometimes, a flavored syrup in my coffee as a treat, or a flavored yogurt or pudding. I don't crave fake sweeteners though so I just use them selectively. I don't find they create a craving for real sugar, in fact, they help me walk by sugary things because I know I have my own safe version at home. But keep in mind I never binged sugary foods so it could be different for someone who did have that issue. Sweet things are not a trigger food for me. -
Things have changed a whole lot since my surgery in 2010! The diet plan I had to follow was one Ensure Protein [and I am know it was not the 30gr/carton variety] and water. That was it. On the hour, 2 oz of protein then 2 oz of water every 15 minutes. I even bought a set of eight pretty 2 oz shot glasses that my husband would use for my meals. At the top of the hour, he brought me one with protein and three with water. Start over at the top of the hour and continue until you went to bed. Slider foods, those that are pureed like mashed potatoes, canned refried beans, tuna with mayo, hot cereals, etc were for weeks 4-6 back then. Of course every practice has their own requirements and so much has changed. To up your protein, add some to your cereals or your yogurt. They make flavorless proteins. Find the protein that you can tolerate. Also, you can look into the clear liquid proteins that are out there. Many companies make them. Stalls are your body's way of trying to figure out just what you are trying to do to it. It naturally does not want you to starve to death so it will hold onto those pounds for as long as it can. Then, you will suddenly lose two pounds overnight, lose for a while and then begin another stall. This is the first of many stalls - just keep doing what you are supposed to be doing and don't let that stall get to you. Yes, that is hard, the "not letting it get to you" part. Remember that your surgery is just another tool in your toolbox and not a magic bullet. For the constipation, which is really common after this surgery because of the high protein intake, I would add Miralax to your water or any liquid or hot cereal. One capful mixed in 8 oz of water, for example. You won't know it is there. I now mix one capful of Miralax with my morning decaf coffee. You could also add stool softener as well. If after adding those, and not getting relief, absolutely speak with your surgeon. There are prescription meds out there that can help.

Looking for my December 2022 Surgery Twin
SalvoStrike replied to Ashbash88's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I also had a bypass surgery a few weeks ago, and it started with soups and protein shakes. I understand your desire to get back to an active life, especially if you were into sports. I'm also looking forward to when I can resume physical activity. As for satisfying and filling meals, I've found that braised vegetables with chicken breast and quinoa can be a tasty and healthy choice. Additionally, fruits, low-fat yogurts, and vegetable omelets are good for variety. The key is to watch portion sizes and follow your doctor's recommendations. -
August 2023 Surgery Buddies!
DD 7939 replied to kayhay0714's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I’ve also been slow but steady. I’m down 46 lbs, started at 345. I had some hives week 2, but those went away. No other issues. The diet has been easy to adjust to. I’ve even gone back to coffee every morning, just less. Helps with #2! I find myself eating a lot of Greek yogurt because it’s easiest on my stomach but high in protein. Rotisserie chicken, stewed sirloin chunks, salads, eggs and bacon. -
Good protein powder clear
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to Selenamarie44's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I buy Hydrolyzed whey protein isolate at Bulksupplements.com because: 1. Made from high-quality whey protein, its hydrolyzed to make it easier for your body to absorb. Plus, it's packed with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) to help promote muscle growth and recovery. Plus, this particular protein powder is also a rich source of leucine. 2. It has no flavor, I've mixed it with eggs, yogurt, shakes, chilli and protein balls, but I've even tried it plain just to see if it had flavor - none! 3. Bulk supplements also third party laboratory tests all products for purity, effectiveness and clean products. 4. 26 grams protein at 110 calories with a great amino acid profile! 5. Use their app and get 10% off too! 6. You can order different quantities depending on your needs. They offer subscribe and save which helps! Hope this helps. -
What do YOU eat in a day and Stalling
Erin18 replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had gastric bypass lol Man, fish is one thing I never liked. I didn't like tuna fish for awhile after surgery(always liked it before). A couple months ago, I started liking it again. Some things I don't like anymore are tacos/nachos (those were one of my favorites!), hot dogs, last night we made homemade subs that I usually like but I just didn't care for it this time, bread type of foods are starting to bother me now. I too can only eat about 2 slices of pizza depending on how thick the crust is. If I eat more that two, I'm asking for it lol. Sometime I can eat 2.5, that's rare. I don't like a majority of the sugar free drinks(the packets). I used to like the lipton sugar free lemon iced tea, not anymore. I can't stand making my own coffee anymore and the only coffee like drink that I really like is a small iced caramel latte from Mickey D's. Better than Starbucks strangely. I ask for 2 equal, 2 cream, whipped cream and caramel drizzle. No, it doesn't make me sick or dump. If it was a medium, I would get an upset stomach tho. Its hard making meals when you don't always have real protein. My fav protein is chicken. I've been using recipes lately and they've been good. But yeah, the salad sounds good, maybe I can make a chicken salad tomorrow for lunch. I have a frozen chicken that I got from Walmart that a bariatric patien suggested and the nutrition facts are pretty good on it and it actually tastes like chic fil a but better in my opinion lol. I saw a recipe for mcgriddle muffins. Except I'm going to use my protein pancake/waffle mix for extra protein. They sound so good. Has anyone gotten sick of yogurt or protein drinks that are already made? Lol I have and that was since a few weeks after surgery. I just bought a protein powder this month and I want to start making 2 protein smoothies a day. Why does some stuff that has sugar in it not bother me but others do? I should eliminate sugar stuff and switch to sugar free instead, but hey sometimes it's better and just need it. Is there something wrong if it doesn't make me sick? Or am I just lucky? Lol I don't like that I don't get sick if I eat something with sugar 😪 Sorry this was long -
Do you feel your restriction yet ? This is my account after the restriction. I did not get to real foods for 12 weeks and I really struggled with meat protein. Depending on what the food was - yogurt, I would not wait anything like a minute. I took tiny spoonful's. With other foods especially warm foods I would eat the few small bites I could and when the food was cold I would put my food away and come back to it later. I hated to eat food that had gone really cold waiting for me to eat. My surgery was in winter and I was frozen to my bones. A lot of the time my food went into the bin because I had eaten enough

@ShneeI have really taken a liking to the sugar free jello. If you can have that on your pre-op then get it. I found a brand called Raymundo's in the yogurt/pudding cold case at Walmart it is 12 for $3.33. Other wise I just drink GNC shakes with water or unsweetened almond or coconut milk. Since I already had the GNC one's on hand I thought this is a good way to finish them but I did by some pre-made premier protein cafe latte shakes that are not bad. -

4 days post-op and feeling good. Walked a MILE today! Stopped to sit down very briefly halfway through and paused to stretch a couple of times. It took me almost 24 minutes, but I did it! My doctor allows sugar-free low carb Greek yogurt and sugar free nonfat pudding during this initial liquid diet stage. Today, I put sugar-free PBFit powder in vanilla Oikos Greek yogurt and it was amazing. I could not eat the whole container, but it's a 5.3 ounce container, so that makes sense! I am also enjoying the bariatric chicken soups for a little variety away from all the sweet flavors.
