    Any advice...

Again...no judgement what so ever. Throwing my two cents out there, and appreciate everyone else's two cents. (Wish you hadn't deleted yours, Fluffy!) Ideas on nutrition have changed many times over...and I expect they'll continue to. Bottom line...do what works for you. What you feel safest doing. What you feel healthiest doing. As down as I personally am on keto...there are some really interesting studies involving kids with seizures and autism being helped by keto diet. They know it improves some neurological disorders, they don't know exactly why. I think we're going to learn a great deal about a lot of illnesses with further research into the gut microbiome....which is in it's infancy. Also....older adults do better on higher protein diets....as contradictory as this seems. So, there's a lot of wiggle room for new information and new ideas that might take us in different directions. I respect everyone's choices.
  3. Refried black beans with hot sauce. I made melted velveta (no hate) with lean ground beef, puréed in processor. Add a little salsa. Yummy and kicked my Mexican food craving. Low carb and low ish fat. Pureed pulled pork steammed carrots with ginger or orange. Soups soups and more soups. fall squash is coming into season. Acorn squash, butternut squash spaghetti squash. All of you are getting your protein. I was dying for something fresh and not fake food. So I went to market and cooked fresh stuff as long as I had meet my protein and hydration goals.

    Pre-Surgery Diet

I was required to lose 5% of my body weight on the 2 week preop (protein shakes and green veggies only). I was afraid I wouldn't, so I started 2 days early. I ended up losing 22 pounds in 16 days, instead of the required 12 pounds. Even when I saw I was past my doctor's required loss I never cheated once....I was on a roll and 10 more pounds closer to goal even before surgery.

    Same Ole Protein

I add fruit to my protein shake every morning that I make one with my unflavored protein powder. I add 1/2 a small banana and 2 -3 frozen strawberries or mixed berries to 4 oz of silk and 1 scoop powder. I eat that every day I go to work, it is my breakfast and works as a meal. I tried it with flavored protein and did not like it.
  6. OH my gosh... I just went back and clicked on the "too tight" option. It shows the barium backing up and a more defined pouch. Wow, good find on this video!

    Pre-op appointment today

I just started my diet today and I'm on 3-4 protein shakes a day and two snacks such as sugar free jello or sugar free popsicles! I hope this helps you!

    Pre-op appointment today

I know that pre-op diets vary a lot from doctor to doctor. This is the one my doctorb uses and that I'm on now. 3-4 low carb, low fat Protein shakes a day. I had the choice of several. Premier Protein Shakes as are good and available at Walmart, Sams and costco. I use unjury Protein powder but since I don't know when your surgery is, I don't know if you would have time to order them. I also can have 3 moderate servings of non-starchy veggies with no fat or "extras" added. It's not an easy diet but I have lost weight during the last 9 days

    FIRST APPOINTMENT!

Welcome. This is an exciting, life-changing process. I see that you posted on the bypass forum. I highly recommend you be open-minded and talk with your surgeon about what procedure is right for you. There are other options besides bypass. I was sleeved April 20, 2015 and couldn't be happier with my experience and my progress so far. I still have a long way to go but my life is completely different than it was even a year ago. Also, keep in mind that the process for preparing for surgery can take a lot of time. Be prepared to be patient, persistence, and practice positivity and perseverance. If you get a chance to have an earlier appointment I recommend you take it. The pre-op process can take some time.
  11. Si I'm near the end of me 10 day liquid protein diet. 4 days in I was down 8.5 lbs...all water weight I assume. Now at day 9 and the last couple if days its actually creeped back up about 1.5 lbs. My head really does understand the physics of all this, but I can't help but worry that I won't loose any weight with this surgery. I mean if "drinking approx 500 calories a day won't produce steady weight loss then I don't know what will!
  12. Seminars in my area are all inclusive. They discuss each and every surgical option they provide. So I doubt you'll be alone but you might be among a smaller group of band seekers. Seems we are getting to be endangered species. Surgeon's seem to push more toward the Sleeve then the band.

    New

I was banded on April 4th, 2006. So far it is working good. I started 2 weeks before my scheduled date on a semi-liquid diet. Cutting out all carbs and only eating proteins when I got real hungury then a complete liquid diet 5 days before the surgery. I have lost 35 lbs to date:clap2: Have about 180 lbs to lose so it is a long road
  14. I was banded 3/19. Between the pre-op diet and post-op, I've lost 31 lbs. as of today (130 more to go). I feel completely confused on planning meals/menus, keeping portions small, and getting the 80-90 g of protein my dietician wants me to have. If you are not supposed to drink 1/2 hour before your meal, during your meal, and 30-60 minutes after you meal, how do you get 64 oz of liquid down in a day? I'd like to hear from anyone who is 3-4 weeks post-op, and how they are doing. Semper fi

    First day of liquid diet

Try EAS AdvantEdge, they are low carb high protein, 110 cal, 17 grams protein. They are the only ones I can drink. I'm over 10 months out and still drink 1-2 a day to get the protein in. I couldn't stand any you mix or the Isopure that everyone raves about. Everyone has different tastes, keep trying til you find one you like.

    Preparing To Prepare

I would really recommend cutting out sugars and carbs. You will most likely be put on a low-sugar, liquid diet before surgery. It is AWFUL, I cried & cried during those days. Start trying out Protein shakes soon, though your taste will change after surgery and you might have to just choke them down, you will need to have an idea of which ones you can even tolerate. Best of luck to you on your journey!!!
  17. Hey everybody. i got sleeved 2/1/2011. It certaintly wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, being scared to death of surgery. The sleeve was my first ever surgical procedure, stay in a hosptial, etc. It's been 6 days and I have already lost nearly 17 lbs. that is a huge PRO. My blood sugar is 109 so I em elated! My surgeon took me off of my medications, diabetes and high blood pressure, and told me I will probably not need them any more. Blood sugar is consistently normal so my diabetes seems to be gone. My blood pressure has been high normal so that is a little concerning but I have an appointment with my regular Dr. later thsi week. That should go down as I lose weight, I would imagine. I didn't have high blood pressure until I gained all this weight so obviously the two are connected. I started on pureed food yesterday. Ate an egg. Tolerated great, as long as it's only a very little bit. Couldn't eat the whole egg, but no problems with it. I feel more energetic since yesterday, I am assuming because I am consuming some Protein now. Now for some CONS: My acid reflux is really bad. I have to take Omneprazole daily. if I get even the slightest bit worked up, like I did while speaking to my employees over the weekend, acid really burns. I am hoping as my stomach heals this calms down a bit or I might have to change careers. Because of the acid, it is very difficult to tell when I am hungry. My sleeve doesn't growl like my stomach did, so it's difficult to tell what is acid and what is hunger pain. That is the only con so far. My taste buds seem to be very bland as well, but that is a good thing because I am breaking a 43 year old habit of overeating. It is phyisically impossible for me to do that any more. My divorce from food is hard, but I'm getting through it. The pounds melting away is helping a lot with that because I am getting instantaneous results. I think about food all the time, but there is nothing I can do about it, so I am being force to break the cycle. Difficult but necessary and thanks to my sleeve, I will not be drowning any sorrows in food ever again. Thanks for listening!

This Definitely Is Mind Over Matter

I have done a 30 day juice fast in the past, and also I've done a VLCD (high protein liquid diet). Once you reach about day four or five the hunger goes away. You'll still have occasional cravings and mental hunger but there isn't any physical hunger after day 4 or 5.

    Im struggling!!!

First, 4 ounces.... WTF? That doesn't sound like normal bandster portions. Who told you to only eat 4 ounces at a setting? Your doctor? Your dietician? Somebody sounds like they've got you confused with a bypass patient. My understanding of normal bandster portions is 3 oz of solid Protein followed with about a half cup of veggies and THEN, carbs (if there's room, and 1/2 cup at the most). That would measure out to be between a cup and a cup and a half. 4 ounces is only a half cup. It's no wonder you're still hungry after 4 ounces. You didn't say whether this is your first fill or not, but remember it does take (on average) 3-5 fills to get proper restriction. That's not to say that someone fresh out of surgery can't have restriction. Some lucky ones do. But if you're not eating adequate portions to feel satisfied, it's hard to tell if you have restriction unless you're saying that you feel satisfied with the smaller portions or have difficulty eating at times. Talk to your doc, or somebody, and ask these questions. Find out exactly what you're supposed to be eating, how much, and WHY. Does your doc primarily do bypass. That may be why he or the dietician recommended such small portions for you. It's what they're used to. Bandsters can eat larger portions than bypass. Second, don't be so down on yourself. You had surgery for a reason. The tool may not be fully working yet. And again, if you've been told to eat such small portions it's not suprising that you feel the need to snack or graze. Get this cleared up and you'll be up and running in no time.

    Im struggling!!!

I don't really have a specific quantity to eat per meal. I try to have a quantity that makes me feel satiated but not too full, and I do take good care about what i eat: fish, lean meat, lots of veggies, fruit between meals, no drinking during meals, chew slowly and keep on chewing... if you're not feeling satisfied with your quantity of food, maybe it's time to increase a bit your daily intake of what you're eating. Have you tried taking some Protein? it could help I guess. hang in there! niki
  21. I'm glad to have found this site, so much good info. I've been to the Weight loss seminar offered by the surgical group and have decided to go forward with VGS. RNY and the malabsorption, has always scared me and not too thrilled with the idea of lap band either so was happy to hear of this alternative. I have Med Cost and they have been really quick to approve coworkers some with much less weight to lose. At 5'6 and 240 lbs I'm pretty disgusted with myself for letting this get so out of control, but as a lifelong yo yo dieter am grateful to have this option to finally get healthy once and for all. It's been inspiring to see the success of friends and read everyone's stories here. Even with the relatively easy approval with my insurance there still are a lot of hoops to jump through. I'm hoping for a January surgery date. Is that realistic? Have to see primary care to document weight and do labs, scheduled for tomorrow, Surgical consult on Wednesday But will still have psych eval, NUT, physical fitness eval, , EGD and at least one support group visit. Seems like an overwhelming list, especially for someone who avoids the doctor like the plague. Yeah, I know odd for a nurse.

    Lactose Intolerance

Wow! Great advise everyone-thanks:biggrin: I just came back from a week of camping (where I actually lost 4 lbs!!!) so I didn't have access to this, so it's great being able to read all the replies! I saw my nutritionist this week and she said to look for whey products that have the "Whey Protein isolate" as the ingredient and not "whey protein consentrate". I like the advise to buy samples though and I have. So far they are great and I've had no probelms, but I'm still not going to buy stock in them until I figure out what I can handle AFTER surgery...I tried the lactose free "Equate" brand (Walmart) and that was actually really good, but I think it was too high in sugar, so that one might be out. I will look for a soy product that tastes good too. I was surprised by the lactose free milk, it actually tasted pretty good and like real milk. I'll also have some lactaid on hand. Right now I have a pretty mild case and I'm a little worried how my body is going to react after surgery, but at least I have some options! My favorite food that I could eat every meal/every day is ice cream, so this has been a blow to that and I can't help wondering if it was some devine intervention:wink_smile: Thanks again for being willing to share this info with me I really appreciate it! Lactose Intolerance

I think the purpose is to get in adequate amounts of protein so it doesn't necessarily have to be in "shake" form. I too am lactose intolerent and I didn't do the shakes at all. I purchased Isopure from GNC. It comes in a bottle and each bottle has 40 grams of protein. They come in different flavors and can be a bit pricey per bottle. I think it was like 3.99 or 4.99 a bottle. They also have protein that comes in a powder form that can be added to juice or even soups. Shop around and you will find that you have a lot of options. I hope this helps. Wishing you all the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Anyone Know Of...

Wow really. Was it a difficult process to have it approved? How did you go about getting the insurance? Can you give me as much info so i can look into this option. Thank you
  25. hahahahah I was going to make the Protein comment, too! I told a male friend of mine about the band and how I track my food, etc. I said, "I track anything that goes into my mouth." He raised one eyebrow and said, "anything?" Alas, I found no entry on The Daily Plat for the "extra protein." *wink*
