    Over 50 sleevers

Hi @bluemather! Congratulations on all the achievements. I'll have to try the peanut butter to see if it curbs my appetite. Thanks for the tip. As far as the loose skin, I'm with you; I'm not looking forward to that, either. But I'll take it if it means I drop this weight. Keep rocking it! 🙌

    Over 50 sleevers

I’m 53 and sleeve surgery date was 1/9/23 so about 5 months post op. So far lost 78 lbs with a few stalls along the way. Longest was 3 weeks (painful wait!). Weight loss has slowed down some but still consistently 2 lbs week sometimes more. I average 900 calories per day and goal of 80 grams protein sometimes I hit more. My doc suggested I increase protein intake and fluids. I never miss fluids 64-70 oz day. I’ve found my meals are pretty consistent and predictable and honestly don’t stray too far in my choices yet. I’m full at 5oz but can eat 6oz. Anything over that in one sitting is too much. I don’t really snack and just eat 3 meals a day. My one concession is 1/2 TBS peanut butter in late evening when I start to feel hungry before bed. Nice treat and curbs the hunger. I have another 70 lbs to lose and look forward to the day when I can eat 1200 calories a day! It’s a journey but feeling great. The biggest bummer is sagging skin and a sad reminder of how I got here in the first place. I’m sure changes in our hormones affect the swings of weight loss along the way but overall I’m convinced we just need to stay the course and it will fall off.
  3. i think most people (most, not all), are pretty run down and tired after surgery. i was dead man walking for about 2-3 weeks immediately after surgey, and just weak-man walking for the next few months after that. it does get better once you start eating more. worth noting that i'm 4.5+ years out, and i still don't think im as "strong" as i used to be pre-wls: opening jars and lifting every day things are just harder to do now. of course, i'm over 1/2 the weight/size i used to be, so i that explains some of that. hang in there ❤️

Hi @amandarara. That's great! I would be thrilled with that level of weight loss. Good for you! 🙌

The line that stuck with you...

I dont have a 'good' but 'bad' was Slimming world, they said I could eat as much rice, pasta and noodles as I wanted and I did. Then later on down the line the woman said you must be eating the wrong foods, you are not loosing weight. I followed that diet religiously, it broke my heart all those weeks not loosing and not knowing why

Thank you Arabesque! I kind of get in my head at times because i really think menopause did a number on me as far as weight gain and inability to lose it on my own without surgery. I know everyone is different and we should not compare the rate or amount of weight loss to others. I just wonder at some point if menopause will interfere with the amount of weight i am able to lose as it seems my hormones seem to be sabotaging me as far as hot flashes, etc. My "banana" was born on 4/12/23 and I've lost 37 lbs. I suppose not bad for 2 months. I average 400-500 calories a day. I get about 60g of protein per day. I will be honest and say i don't exercise as much as i should. Water is hard for me to drink the amount you are supposed to so i did switch to decaf black tea with splenda and of course that is easier for me to drink more of it but still dont think i'm getting the 64oz of liquid.

I think that is an excellent amount of weight loss!!! Congratulations!!
  8. It's great you have your pcp psychiatrist support. There are a few different type of RNY revision. What procedure are having? Did you stretch your pouch? The reason I'm asking is because my aunt regained all her weight back and more after 10 years post RNY. She had it evaluated and her pouch was still tiny and didn't stretch. She had learned to eat around it, and drank with her meals too, hence they didn't want to do a revision. They told her she would lose 10 to 15% max and it wouldn't be worth it especially since her health isn't very good. I am still going hoping she can get the help she needs because all her comorbities have come back. I have tried to help her go back to basics but unfortunately she can't stop snacking. She is seeing a doctor and psychiatrist to help her.

    Roux-en-y Revision

I'm happy things worked out with your little. And congrats on the weight loss, you'll be back down before you know it.
  10. I assume everyone on here has battled to lose weight for a long time and has tried multiple stratagies and diets. Along the way we all have an endless supply of life coaches that want to tell you what to do or how you are doing it wrong, if you asked them or not. My question is this. What was the one statement or piece of advice that stuck with you and one that was dumb as hell? I'll go first. GOOD: "Every food choice you make is either healing your body or poisoning it. Every movement choice you make is either helping your body or rusting it." (Dude that was very in shape, 2004). BAD: "You can eat whatever you want as long as you stop eating at 4pm for the day" (Guy that called in sick atleast once a week, 2016) What still sticks with you?
  11. Hi everyone. The mid-year sales are everywhere these days and I was trying to buy new shirts and pants online (my latest addiction). The "problem" that I'm facing is that it seems all the brands that I like only had sales on the big sizes (L, XL, XXL) but not M, S or XS. I don't recall this being a problem in the past haha. It must be a good problem to have then. This made wonder what other "good problems" I had since WLS. Here is what I could think of so far in addition to the one above: - I'm now working size S shirts. I need to find a brand that makes size XS shorts that fits nicely without being too tight. Two years ago, I was on the other end of the size chart / having custom-made shirt - We had a refresher safety training at site last week and I was chosen more than once to demo what we learned. I had to climb ladders, go into manholes (mock ones), confined spaces etc. I was never asked to do this before - I can't use my weight as an excuse for not doing stuff around the house that requires climbing on ladders etc. It would be interesting to hear yours.

    Indiana hip plus bcbs

Hello, lovelies! I just had my consult with the surgeon a couple days ago, but unfortunately the nurse that makes all of my upcoming appts to the nut, pulm, etc is in vaca until next week so I didn’t get many of my questions answered. for those of you that have Indiana hip state plus bcbs: I wanted to know let’s say I’m trending downward in weight during my 6 month program, and go in and I’ve gained even a pound, or even an oz, will they deny me? My surgeon said likely not, but I’m not sure he actually knows. I know I don’t have to lose a specific amount of weight, but my concern is what if I gain during those 6 months? Ive looked at my insurance requirements for surgery, and it’s not overly specific, so I can’t exactly get answers through them. Just curious! not sure if it matters but I have uncontrolled high bp and I’m getting checked for sleep apnea, which I’m sure I have, just not on the books yet. I also have high cholesterol so I have at least two co morbidities.
  13. Went to Orthopedic surgery consult to start on knee replacements. (I am 67 and bone on bone - both knees...) Had my sleeve a dozen years. Doctor is going through issues ... my asthma, chronic lung issues.... he asks if I have any questions.. I ask about my weight. He looks at me like I have said "my third knee" and says "Your weight is fine for your age...why are you asking?" oops. Old Habits....

    July 2023 buddies

Hi 👋 my surgery is scheduled for July 7th. I am anxious to get it over with and start the healing process. I'm 55 and wish I would have done this years ago. I have struggled with my weight all my life and have tried too many diets to count. Praying this works for me.

    Gaining weight

I wondered about the steroids too as they can increase your appetite. People I know say they make them crave carbs or sugar. I also agree with focussing on your diet. Exercise only contributes to about 10% of any weight you want to lose but also makes you hungry. Of course there are lots of other benefits to exercising but don’t rely on it for weight loss. Reduce sugars (real & artificial), reduce fats, reduce carbs, reduce high processed foods, increase protein, increase vegetables, get your fluid intake up to 64ozs (try for more water than other fluids), introduce more low or no processed foods & watch portion sizes. All good new habits to start. You may find it easier to start adopting only one or two of these at a time.

    Stalling after 12 days ?

I wish i was kidding on my weightloss surgery weight was 258 pounds. I only fasted a day before surgery.

    Stalling after 12 days ?

Yep, a stall. You’ll likely have a few more of them while you are losing too. They’re a natural & important part of your weight loss. It’s the time your body takes to reassess your current needs & your weight loss & readjusts things like digestive hormones & enzymes & metabolic rate. You don’t have to do anything except stick to your plan & let your body take the time it needs to recalibrate. They usually last 1-3 weeks. The stall will break when your body is ready. Unfortunately, they can be frustrating because your body doesn’t work to your timeline & needs.

    Over 50 sleevers

I was almost 54 when I had my sleeve. I lost all my weight & more. My surgeon was always happy with my rate of loss. The bonus 11kgs I lost took longer (11 months) than the initial 31kgs (6 months) to my goal weight. As @catwoman7 said there are many factors that influence the rate at which you lose. Some you can control but most you can’t. You’ll find there are average rates & average amounts of weight you can lose but averages only give you an idea of what you might experience not what you will. What you can be sure of is if you follow your plan & the recommendations & advice of your surgeon & dietician, you’ll lose weight at the rate which is right for you. It’s the same with how much weight you’ll lose. All the best & celebrate every pound you lose.

    Stalling after 12 days ?

When I stalled I had to switch something up like when I ate, what I ate, exercised etc Make sure your getting enough protein cause that will make you stall as well…Also NEVER drink while your eating it will expand your stomach…I’m 7 yrs out and have maintained for 5 yrs…I gained 20lbs after 2 yrs and have taken 15 back off and have maintained that for the past 5 yrs… I was 226 when I started and have stayed and maintained at 130. I wish you the best!!! It’s HARD work but it’s ALL worth it!!!

    Happy 64th to me!

It seems like most years I lose about 5 lbs in the summer and then gain it back in the winter. Rinse and repeat. I'm sure it has to do with just being out and about more. Plus I tend to eat lighter foods in the summer, too.

    Over 50 sleevers

Not a sleever, but a bypasser. I had surgery at age 55. I was a slow loser the whole time, but there are so many things that factor into that that I'm not sure how much of it was due to age - but probably at least some. It also depends on your gender, your starting BMI, how muscular you are, how active you are, genetics, whether or not you lost a lot of weight before the surgery, etc. If you really stick to your program, you'll lose the weight - whether fast or slow

    Happy 64th to me!

Happy Birthday, BillOh!!! Way to go on your continued weight loss. Retirement is just around the corner. Enjoy!
  23. Any over 50 sleevers? Did you find the weight after surgery came off faster/slower than someone younger?

    Before and after

honestly, its not the weight loss that is outstanding between the two pics (which is very evident, btw!), but the projected confidence! Feeling good and looking it for the WIN! Congratulations! ❤️
  25. I had the roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery in 2018. My beginning weight was 290 and in less than a year I was down 100 lbs. I got pregnant at the end of 2019. I gained 30 lbs during that time and lost it all after 2 months of breast feeding. I breast fed until my son was 11 months and he was ON DEMAND. I had to increase my intake to produce more milk. I now have gained over 70 lbs since I stopped and tried intermittent fasting, Golo, high protein low carbs and nothing has worked. I go to my bariatric surgeon tomorrow and hope to get a green light on a revision as I know my pouch has increased in size as I can eat more than I used to. My energy level is at a 2 and I'm burnt out with my soon to be 3 yr old who is full of energy. I was on no medication after my surgery and now I'm taking 6 different prescriptions daily and its wearing me down mentally as well. My PCP and Psychiatrist are supportive as long as my bariatric surgeon is as well. I pray this goes well tomorrow. I hope to return with good news.
