    Knees

Pre-surgery I was having knee pain in one leg, ankle pain in the other. Shin pain in both. After surgery - the pain was gone. It was only in the last 10 lbs that I gained that I started having leg issues. So, dropping that so quick was the contributing factor. My mom is overweight and needs double knee replacement- I did not want to get to this point in my life. So I made the change. (I have tried to convince her that her weight is contributing to her issues, but she won’t make a change to her eating)

    Vitamin d 3

My pale skin means sun screen and sun avoidance. I have had chronically low D for 10+ years and taken the 50,000 IU twice a week periodically. I now maintain with daily 2000 IU. If OP is taking 10,000 IU daily and still running low, it would suggest some absorption issue. Definitely worth a talk with the doc as D is super important for immune health.

I got home about 9.30 last night (day after surgery), and slept happily in my own bed, just been having liquid paracetamol (I think you call it Tylenol). This morning I had: 6.15 water, 7am protein water, 8am oatibix (about 1/3 softened in milk), 9am multivitamin drink. Going to try and eat something again at 10. Walked for 2.5 mins on my treadmill and have retreated back to the sofa to cuddle the dog!

In April 2019 mine was at 10.5. Because I work nights and burn easily it took almost 4 months of 50,000iu x2 weekly and 1,000iu daily to get it to 27. I now take 1,200iu daily along with an extra 1,000iu weekly to keep it between 25-30.
  5. I agree with @catwoman7. But also, are you tracking/counting your calories? If not, small snacks can really add up! I found that when I have been trying to lose weight prior to surgery, I've been doing high protein and low carb, and it's be so much easier than earlier attempts. I would make sure that the snacks don't have sugar/carbs (Like low fat yogurt can be really high in added sugar unless it's something like light and fit greek, which is great because it's also high in protein). But as @catwoman7 said, you won't lose 10 lbs every week even if you're perfect.
  6. 10 lbs in one week is a lot - I suspect six or seven pounds of that was water. With any diet, after that big initial drop due to water, you settle in to true weight loss, which is usually 1-2 lbs a week. So what you're seeing is pretty normal.
  7. I just realized I was supposed to post this in pre-surgery weight loss. Is there a way for me to move the post? Sorry for the mistake? Hello everyone, I need to lose 50 pounds before I go for my sleeve surgery so I am at a better BMI to make it safer. They set me up with a nutritionist for medical weight loss. Pretty much, I am to have 3 protein shakes a day and 2 small snacks in between like low fat cheese, and egg, low fat yogurt, etc... I have been sticking to this diet completely with no cheats. The first week I did great and lost 10 pounds. I am toward the end of my second week and the scale is showing I am only down point 8... I don't see how this is even possible. I have failed on so many diets on the past. I failed using phentermine and so many weight loss drugs. I am so worried that there is something about me that just can't lose weight. Ugh I am so disappointed and worried. Has anyone experienced this or have advice for me?

    No energy at all!

Possible dehydration, low caloric intake, low blood pressure, recovery all contribute to a lack of energy after surgery. I experienced low energy levels for ages & my tendency to low blood pressure (random drops) became full blown orthostatic hypotension after surgery. Every time I got up the world would go black & my head would sometimes get a bit doughy. It’s not quite as bad now - only happens a few times a day & not all day long. If the dizziness is from from drops in your blood pressure there are things you can do to help avoid injury from falling. Get up slowly. Once standing don’t move for a minute. When you do start walking making sure there’s a wall, chair, table near you that you can grab to ground you if you get dizzy & stop moving (I’ve even grabbed people 😁). It passes in about 10 seconds for me. Have a chat with your medical team & get your BP checked. Up your fluid intake & add some extra salt to your diet. If you’re on meds for high blood pressure they may need to be adjusted. Take things slowly.

I violate thermodynamics and it's crap

I sort of weigh my food. Mostly I get food in a known weight quantity and eat a known fraction of it. So, if I get a pound of pork tenderloin, and cut it evenly into quarters, each is roughly a quarter pound. I'm at least eating an accurate weight over a few meals. I probably need to get a food scale, but I've always balked at that because it feels a bit obsessive and sucks the fun out of meals a bit. I might still try. I do keep track of calories and macros on MyFitnessPal. I tend to do pretty well, though anytime I ever dare to have a sandwich I kick myself because bread is so dang caloriffic. I try to eat mostly meat dishes, skipping the bread and pasta and such. I'm not keto, though. (If I were keto, I'd totally weigh like 10 pounds less, though honestly it doesn't make a single difference in my inches it seems.) Yeah, I definitely need a new scale. This one is screwy. I've been procrastinating lol. Yup, I've had my thyroid tested like five times over the past five years. Keeps coming back "fine, not quite low." I did go on Synthroid once and it made no difference, so it was discontinued. I'm eating 1000-1200 calories a day, with occasional mistakes. I know I'm not perfect, but I'm doing my best. My guess is I need to have more NEAT (non-workout exercise, basically), but I have a sit-down computer job, and when I get interrupted, it's hard to focus. That puts a bit of a damper on walking around a lot. >< I'm trying, at least, and my clothes fit some better. Notably, I don't get food cravings nearly so much. I used to be the sort of person who could never eat just a couple pieces of chocolate -- I'd eat the whole bag, so I had to never keep sweets in my house whatsoever. Now, I can actually do stuff in moderation. I also don't eat when I'm bored almost at all anymore, and I don't get random sugar cravings every day. I don't get nearly as hangry, though now I get physical stomach pains from being hungry if I don't keep up with meals. I'm guessing this is a hormonal change from part of my stomach having atrophied due to being folded up and unusable.

    June 2021- calling all Vets!

six years out. Originally lost 235 lbs, gained 10 lbs in year 3 (which was expected since I knew going into this that a 10-20 lb bounceback after hitting bottom is super common). Gained 10 more lbs during COVID, which I'm currently working on losing (only want to lose the 10 I gained over the past year, though - I have no desire to go back to my lowest weight - it was too low for me)

    Questions

Find out what your insurance requires. Some insurances don't require monitored weight loss, but most do. From 3 months-1 year. Some insurances that don't require the monthly weight loss instead have a percentage you have to lose to be approved (though some of the monitored weight loss insurances have this too). My insurance was different then yours and it required a 6 month monitored weight loss program, but did not have a requirement to lose weight (you just couldn't GAIN weight). You can actually generally ask the insurance coordinator at the bariatric office what your insurance requires if you don't want to call your insurance yourself. After they send the paperwork in to the insurance it takes 2-3 weeks to approve and then they'll give you a surgery date. So really it depends on 1. your insurance, and 2. how long they're scheduled out for (because I got approved at the end of November 2019, but my surgery was scheduled 2 months later on January 23 2020. So my wait from my first bariatric consultation until surgery was 8 months). The time actually goes by pretty fast. Or, at least it did for me. I ended up losing 68 pounds in that 8 month period so... I was productive lol.

    Surgery tomorrow

10 years is a long time to try to lose weight, give it your best, and be unsuccessful. I remember my surgeon saying in the orientation that weight loss surgery is the best chance many people have for success, long-term. You will be getting an amazing tool that will complement what you are already doing. I can’t speak to gaining the weight back, since I am only a few months out. But so far, the weight has been coming off easier than ever in my life. I feel where you are coming from, about feeling that not losing weight so far has been a personal failure. For years, I have felt that I am smart, accomplished, and yet I can’t figure out how to lose weight! At some point, some of us need some extra help, and this is it! I hope your surgery goes well! 😀

    Surgery tomorrow

Basically the same. It is frustrating because most of my life my weight was under control. The past 10 years is when things changed. Overall I eat well but my weight still climbs so I finally tried medical weight loss. Did not lose any weight which is why my doctor suggested surgery. I still feel that it is a failing on my part and that I should be able to get this under control. also afraid I will go through this and not lose weight or gain it all back like I have read about others

    Abdominal pain 2 weeks out?

I understand about that. I had my sleeve on 5/10. Had pain from 7-9 (on pain scale) from surgery onward. On 5/26, went to ER where I was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. Admitted to hospital on 5/29 and gallbladder removed on 6/2. Was in ER again today because of post op pain and reflare of pancreatitis (Lipase is over 900, 350 is high range). I talked to my surgeon but finally had to listen to what my body was saying. I'm hopeful that this will reduce sooner rather than later. I'm not saying you have the exact same issue, but pain is a signal. If I moved, it hurt. If I sneezed, oh god - bad. Coughing - no. Water on stomach when showering - F. Listen to your body, annoy your surgeon and keep asking questions. I hope you feel better and the pain subsides. J Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    June Surgeries

You absolutely are not alone. I'm really struggling to figure out this new pouch. The only time I feel full is when I have to take my medications (which they told me to take them normally). Its brutal and takes about 10 minutes where I used to be able to do it in 30 seconds lol. Trying to get my 64oz of water in and 3 protein shakes a day. Its a little bit difficult. I hope it will be easier to differentiate our fullness once we hit puree and soft foods. I know that I made the right choice by doing this surgery. I thought about it for years and went through 7 months of preparation. But I did experience some buyers remorse last night. I think I'm feeling overwhelmed by it all - I did pull a muscle in my shoulder a day before surgery and that hurts more than anything my surgeon did so its hard to really gauge my pain right now. I feel like I studied and really self reflected leading up to all of this but somehow, I feel that I'm underprepared. I'm sure this feeling will go away with time. I've also stalled...which logically I know its fine, because I'm healing but then the worry sets in, am I doing anything wrong? Its way too easy to slip into comparing your journey to others. We all move at our own pace. And then my birthday is tomorrow. Kinda sucks feeling so low on such a milestone birthday, but I'm sure once I recover, things will be good. Don't mean to have a pity party lol, I guess I'm just all up in my feelings at the moment. I'm super proud of all of us though. Its not an easy journey.

    May Surgeries - check in!

My surgery was May 10, 2021. So I'm almost 5 weeks post op. I have done really well until last three days. I have ate all the wrongs foods. Not too much, thank God. But I had no trouble eating them. Pizza, a chili dog, onion rings and a few bites of ice cream. I know its just stress eating. I am literally having to jump through hoops for my company to get back to work. Anyways, today is a new day and I am refocused to eat the right things. Just had to share and vent.

    6 weeks out - Expectations

So for me, my BMI was a bit lower than what most doctors would consider for the VSG surgery. I really didn't want to go that route anyway. So, I was excited to learn about the ESG. It took me a LONG time to get my expectations in line. My friend had the gastric bi-pass and loss massive weight very quickly and I guess I had that in my head. But, she started out 100 pounds heavier than I did. While logically I knew I wouldn't drop weight that fast, somehow I kept being disappointed by slow and steady progress. Even if I'd qualified for the VSG, I'd go the ESG route again. I'm still 20 pounds from my goal weight, but I'm fine with that. I've gone from a very tight size 16 to a comfortable 10. The most important thing is I'm comfortable in my skin for the first time since my early 20's. My advice is don't wait. You can debate for another year and it will be putting your life on hold that much longer. You likely know in the back of your mind which route is the way you want to go. Pull the trigger and get things moving. Set realistic expectations. Do not expect this to be an easy fix. Instead of thinking of it as making weight loss easy, think of it as making weight loss completely possible and within reach. It will be hard and you will have set backs, even early on. This group helped me so much knowing it was just that, a small set back. This is by far the best thing I've ever done for myself. Either route you choose will change your life for the better. Good luck!

I violate thermodynamics and it's crap

I've stopped losing inches now. Everything has just come to a total halt for the past 3 weeks or so. I did go on vacation week-before-last, so that particular week is a wash. I didn't eat everything in sight, but I did decide I could have dessert and drink wine with the husband. That said, me eating a lot now would probably hit 2000 calories -- it's so hard to overeat. I get full for an entire day on what would have been one standard meal out of 2 or 3 before. I have to break this stall naturally eventually, right? Physics says so? My bathroom scale is irritatingly unreliable. I can stand shifted to my right foot and gain 5-10 pounds, to the left and lose 5-10. It's obnoxious. I think I'm around 230-235 right now. It makes sense with how I'm fitting into my clothes and how the scale has wobbled around. Dishearteningly, that's where I was before I gained the pandemic weight. So really, I look no thinner than I did before Covid. Ugh. That said, I did lose 20-30 pounds in 2 months, which is astounding compared to past progress. That's about 3 lbs a week, which IIRC is considered really dang good. Maybe time is just going slower since the ESG than I think. I know I'm slipping on drinking water. I don't like having to pee frequently. That said, I'm sweating more, which is a good thing considering I'm just about anhydrotic most of the time. Maybe I've just been dehydrated my entire life. I picked up weightlifting again. I started out pretty weak, and I've had to skip some days because of the extreme heat (no AC in the gym aaaah) and work stress. That said, I'm up to 185 lb squats and 95 lbs bench-press now. That's something.

That was 10 days post surgery??? OMG you look great @WishMeSmaller. How long will you have the drain? I get the post surgical fatigue. I did a few chores around the house last week about a week after my gall removal & I spent the rest of the day on the couch 😁. I can only imagine how it’s affected you after your bigger surgery. Pretty flash Halloween costume @Ellie64. Looks great on you.
  24. I am 19 days post op and I am still struggling to drink the fluids. I am not even able to drink the protein shakes their now nasty to me , I tried the protein bars & it didn’t end well. I have chest pains & I can barely eat. I am weak & my mouth is always dry, and feeling nauseous. Can anyone provide any advise. At least I doing the vitamins. Recently my chest & stomach have a burning sensation.

I had a very difficult time finding protein shakes that tasted okay and didn't make me sick. I ended up drinking FairLife Core Power protein shakes. I love the chocolate (tastes like chocolate milk to me). I like to blend it with some ice and PB2 powder (or real PB) to give the smoothie consistency. I also found that if I put Panera's Turkey Vegetable soup through the blender, I could eat it. I survived off those two things. My chest pains were from the gas, which was incredibly bad and took so much longer than I expected to resolve. I'd definitely stay away from bars or anything solid until you've conquered liquids. I'd love to tell you the dry mouth will get better soon, but it didn't for me for a very long time (months). The plus to that was that I drank a ton of water. The good new is I suspect you are close to the light at the end of the tunnel on this first and hardest part of the journey. It gets SO much easier after this part.

    Anybody not working out??

I’m 13 days post-vsg and did a 6 mile walk yesterday. Pre-surgery I was getting pain in my calves just going short distances. It was so nice to be able to walk without issue again. I was very sedentary. In October I got an Apple Watch. I set the excercise goal at 10 minutes. Hardly closed the rings in the first couple months. Then, I decided each month to add on 5 minutes and just do “something”. I have closed the rings every day since mid-January. (I do tweak the goals at times - like Surgery day) I was at 35 minutes per day pre-surgery. I did walking or Fitness+ workouts. Post-surgery, I have just been walking. My speed is finally back up to a “brisk” walk level. It was slow going in the beginning. Once I’m given clearance, I plan to resume strength workouts. Exercise wasn’t the issue for me - it was the eating. Hence, the surgery.
