I use the Jay Robb unflavored, but I usually put it in something that is otherwise pretty strongly flavored. (smoothies and Soups, mostly) It mixes mostly okay. What really screws it up bad, though, is getting it too hot in Soup (like you try to reheat your soup in the microwave because you can't possibly eat it before it gets cold...) I like to try to get a variety of Proteins so I'm not getting the exact same thing all the time. I haven't found any Protein that I actually "like". They all are in the "tolerate" category. Pretty much, they all suck and I have to think of them like I think of medicine. Good luck! Egg white protein is definitely a viable option if you aren't tolerating whey very well. There are also a lot of vegan protein powders on the market. You want to look for one that is a mix of a variety of sources, just like a vegetarian would combine food to get a complete amino acid profile. The last thing I hear/read is that where people used to be told that they needed a complete combination in each meal, the reality is more like they should just get the combo within the same day. Also... there really isn't any need to fear soy for the phytoestrogens, but I wouldn't make it a large part of your supplementation. Never hurts to be cautious... I would steer clear of single source Pea Protein, though. It's good for you, but tastes like the starchiest, nastiest old pea on the vine and tends to be really gritty. Definitely NOT nummy! Good luck!

Discovering the Error of my ways - Food Logging
music1618 replied to music1618's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is my understanding from my doc and Nut that it is for the rest of our lives to hit your protein goals. However as we get further along in our journey our choices in protein are expanded. Whole foods protein is the best option - meat, fish, eggs and so on. Then you supplement with shakes. I feel best during the day if I start out with a Protein Shake. I then try to eat lean meats and fish. I also use double pasteurized egg whites in my drinks. Honestly it is tough to get in all my protein everyday, but I realized through logging it is imperative. -
Jumped thru all of the insurances hoops and surgery is scheduled for Dec. 11, 2009. Dr. wants me on a liquid diet for 7 days prior to surgery - don't know what to expect - except hunger pains ! Worried because I've failed at every diet I've ever tried. Will this work? It is my last option! Any information or helpful hints are appreciated. Thanks. Michelle

Anyone with 11cc band? I have questions.
Jeni posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello. I was banded on January 17, 2008. I have lost 16 lbs as of March 4th and won't know if I've lost anymore until I go for my next appointment. I have decided not to get on a scale at all except for when I see my doctor. I don't want to get upset by looking at the scale all the time so I don't. I have an 11cc band and my doctor gave me my first fill on March 4th which was 3cc's. I was very careful with drinking and eating but realized very quickly that my first fill did nothing for me. I was wondering if because I have the 11cc band, would it take longer for me to feel restriction? If anyone has this band, how many fills did it take you to feel any restriction? I am feeling a little depressed because my doctor's office called and told me that I have to have my 2nd fill date changed from 4/8 until 4/24 due to my doctor having emergency surgery himself. It is frustrating to have to wait that long since I'm really doing this by willpower alone. I am still eating too much at one sitting but trying to make better choices and eat protein first. I just wanted to hear others experiences. Thank you. Jeni in PA:redface: -
Suggestions for liquid and how to add protein?
Singer posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Help! I am 7 days post op. I have been drinking Boost shakes with added protein, and am getting sooooo tired of them. I have 8 more days of this (until my follow up appt next Tuesday). I am finding I can only "eat" about 5 oz of anything at a meal. Dietitian says I can have FF pudding, and fat free, or heart healthy strained soup. I bought a couple soups yesterday, and not happy with my choices. Any suggestions for soup? AND, how do I add protein if I am using soup? Unjury says it has to be warm, not hot liquid...???? -
I try to stay under 60g of carbs a day. So not really low carb but definitely not normal carb amount. If I do have carbs they come from a Protein bar that I grab as a quick Breakfast or my yogurt. My typical day: Breakfast: Protein shake or bar Snack: Greek Yogurt or cheese (Whether cheese stick or mini babybell light) Lunch: Some type of meat and cheese -- sometimes tuna salad others light salami Snack: part of Protein Bar or yogurt Dinner: Meat cooked however -- usually chicken or pork Snack: Metamucil Fiber pink lemonade Water mix and maybe later some cheese and a pickle Mind you, I start my day at 6 am and end around midnight or 1am On a typical day I eat about 45 g of carbs and 70 g of protein with around 700 calories

High Protein Food Choices--When You Really Don't Like Shakes.....
Catracks replied to Texarkolina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I want to get a lot of protein in and use little space, I usually go for the seafood. The best are ahi tuna (not the canned crud), salmon, followed by shrimp and scallops. -
High Protein Food Choices--When You Really Don't Like Shakes.....
delta_girl replied to Texarkolina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm still fairly new at 6 or so weeks, but I like edamame, Ostrim, salmon, pb2, low fat cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, split pea soup (11g protein per .5 cup), boiled egg whites. -
Does anyone use egg protein powder? I have been trying to use whey protein isolate and it gives me bad gas. Any suggestions

I need some opinions and suggestions. I am currently in the options class and I have 4 classes left. When I started the class 8 weeks ago my BMI was only 37. I don't have any co-morbities and I am afraid that once I finish the classes I will not get the authorization to get the surgery. The nurse who teaches our class says that if I got into the options class and if I complete all of the requirements then I should get the authorization once the class is over. I am very worried and I have not lost any weight because I do not want my BMI to drop any lower. So I would like some opinions and answers about the following questions. Do you think I will get the authorization once the class is over? Should I be worried? Should I try to lose weight? All comments welcome.

Mornings are so difficult
monty replied to ava2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I feel that way but it is getting better. I am 6 weeks out and have dealt with nausea most of the time. My doctor told me to forget the morning protein shake and to start with warm coffee and meds. Let that settle for an hour then eat protein, fruit, etc. It does seem to help having something warm on the tummy first thing. I also take a ginger capsule and that has helped .Hang in there. Also if possible try to get outdoors and get some sun. Hope this helps. -
what should my protein goal be 1 week post op?
Wires posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't been keeping track of protein grams and just trying to focus on my liquids, getting my meds in and trying some protein shakes. Anyone have a # goal at this stage in the game? -
what should my protein goal be 1 week post op?
macman replied to Wires's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most of what I heard on this forum ,my program included, require 60 grams of protein and 64 ounces of water each day. Early on, while on liquids, the focus should not be on carbs and fats but rather getting nutrition and protein to help you heal from surgery. My NUT had me on a schedule of drinking 4 ounces of protein shake on every even hour, 4 ounces of water on the odd hours throughout the day. Doing this I was able to get in protein and fluids without having to stare at a large glass full of liquid. Small paper cups did the job. -
Totally normal. The same thing happened to me. I had a week of nothing but protein shakes and diarrhea all day long. I found that chewable fiber (generic) helped firm it up a little bit, but really, when you only put liquid in.....it isn't uncommon for liquid to be the only output.

Hello, I dnt know if isjust me, but the necessity of chew does not go away everytime I drink my broth or protein I want to chew!!!! This is so hard!!!

I am using my fitness pal and tracking everything, even though my NUT wouldn't give me numbers at first to shoot for. She finally did today and I am going over her recommended fat intake most days even though I am eating lean meats and reduced fat cheeses. She said to stay under 35g of fat. I'm eating low carb and trying to get in Protein. Rf cheese sticks and turkey sticks add up though. I'm under 1000 calories most days and well under 40 carbs. I am really not losing much and I don't know if it's because of too much fat. Or just normal stall my clothes do fit better. I've only actually lost weight one out of six weeks after my first 2 weeks that I lost a bunch. Just curious if others have tracked their fat intake. Seems hard to stay that low. I probably could add a Protein shake meal back in I do tend to choose cheese as my protein snack it's just such an easy to grab protein and pretty low calorie. But I may need to suck it up and let the cheesiness go lol.

Meet surgeon tomorrow-what to expect
KristenLe replied to Melsyboo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They'll review your medical history, current problems, medications, etc. They'll probably review eating habits and help to determine if sleeve will be best option. Mine listened to my heart and lungs. He examined my abdomen because I had previous abdominal surgery (not sure if they usually do exam). Good luck! -
It will be over tomorrow. No more prepping. Just follow your surgeons post surgery food, water, and protein. That is your new job.
-
Well....look at it this way.....you are getting your Protein in.......eating low calorie but not silly low......exercising frequently.....all good strategy. About the only thing you may consider is to closely track your carbohydrate intake and maybe flirt around with ketosis for a while......shake things up a bit.

Best Tasting Source Of Protein?
DinaMiller6450 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What is the best tasting source of protein? -
My doctor told me about a great peanut butter called PB2. It comes in powder form and you mix with Water and it only has about 53 calories compared to 190. They have a website you can order it on. It is also great to add in your Protein shakes

When does the anxiety/emotions start to even out?
Sherryp50 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 7/17/13 and I have been a roller coaster of emotions. At first I was waking up at night in a hot sweat just feeling in a total panic, I would think "omg I ruined my life". That has seemed to be a little better. I did wake up this morning feeling anxious, no sweats just general anxiety about getting all my protein and water in. I went back to work last week and that has helped, but in the midst of my first week back I had a bad reaction to Cipro and my feet swelled and that made work hard. I can't put my finger on exactly what I am anxious about, I think it is just a huge change and I want so bad just to feel normal. Anyone else go through this? -
HI! New & need lots of advice!!
kris74745 replied to Tampabrat22's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi! I can relate to your weight gain. I weighed about the same as you did, and then had a few traumatic events in my life. I gained over 100 lbs. 60 lbs. due to anti-depressants. Anyway, I think it is different for every state and every insurance company. My insurance did not cover mine. My husband had it done, also. I would find out if there are any local seminars you can attend. That was the first step for me. Once that was over with, the process just rolled on! They have a pre-op diet of liquids: Slim-Fast, clear broths, and Protein shakes, and Vitamins. This is to shrink your liver. You will have to have a sleep study, so if you want to get that under way, go ahead. Some places require a note from a psychologist. If you see a psychologist, it wouldn't hurt to do that. You definitely can have the surgery, and I think you would be more than pleased with it! It takes time, but it is worth it! At first, it seems overwhelming, but take it one day at a time, and before you know it...you are banded! You should be able to call your insurance company and ask if they cover morbid obesity. Good luck to you and in whatever you decision you make! Kristi:thumbup: -
How much protein & how are you getting it?
LisaLP posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Since every practice is different, I'm wondering how much protein you were told you need after surgery. My surgeon says 60 to 80 grams per day. I am 2 weeks post op, and I'm not getting nearly that much. I know we're supposed to focus on water first, and I'm doing fine with that. I just about can't stand the protein shakes, so I got some protein shots and they are even worse but at least there isn't as much to drink. I've started eating high protein foods on the puree stage, like ricotta cheese and things like that. What is your track for getting in protein?
