    Hair loss help!!!!!

I’m at 4 months and losing tons of hair too. I don’t have thick hair but I do have very long hair that’s super slick and straight. Pre-surgery I could wrap a ponytail 4 Times, I think I’m going to have a heart attack if I end up having to do 5! I hope it starts growing back soon!

    Hair loss help!!!!!

I was told by the nutritionist before surgery that it was likely to happen. My surgeons practice recommends taking a Biotin supplement 2 x a day to try to help with it. I was so happy for the first several months that I didn't notice a difference in the amount of hair I lost, and then starting in month 5 I had to unclog the shower drain 2-3 times during my morning shower so the water would drain and I had to clean my brushes every couple days. My hair used to be very thick, so much so that I often broke hair clips trying to fit them onto my hair. Now I can feel it's much thinner, especially at the crown of my head. I'm hoping I don't develop a bald spot! But the good news is that once the rapid weight loss tapers off it does grow back, from what I am told. **I have noticed that when I use a hair band to make a pony tail, I have a lot more hair falling out in the shower the next day. I think the band being tight and pulling at the hair doesn't help, so I have stopped doing pony tails for now. Sucks for exercise and bad hair days, but I'm trying to salvage what I can!
  6. Just wanted to check in and do some reading for some ideas and tips. I love reading all the posts! I have LB surgery on April 16, 2012 and I have lost 22 pounds so far. I actually lost 18 pounds in my pre-op diet (10 days) before surgery. Since surgery, I've lost 4 more! So thrilled about my weight loss. My clothes are looser and I feel better about myself! So far everything has gone great! Just some soreness after surgery, but that is much better now. I have an appointment with my doctor May 2. Will keep everyone updated!

    Purred foods?

I've had no problem. My daughter bought me a book called Eating well after Weight Loss Surgery. It was written by a chef that also happened to have LapBand. The recipes are yummy. She has recommendations for each recipe as to when you can start it and guidelines about how much to purée and so forth. I made a turkey burger in which after grilling I cut in half and then puréed with a Greek yogurt sauce. The next day took the other half and puréed with BBQ sauce! It was very satisfying! Most recipes are broken down into LapBand, bypass and sleeve then broken down to week 1, 2, 3, 4...

    Drinking

My team said no alcohol for the first year. There were three reasons for this: 1) Liver failure. Your body burns fat very quickly during the first year releasing toxins stored in the fat into your system. Your liver is working very hard during this time to filter these out. Adding alcohol during this time period can overwork your liver, causing liver failure (resulting in at least one recent death for my program). 2) Cross addiction or transfer addiction. Many of us are addicted to various foods and need to practice and learn new coping skills while we are losing weight so we can keep the weight off for life. The statistics are pretty high for alcoholism, drug addiction, and other less common addictions (gambling, shopping, sex) for weight loss surgery patients. These statistics are equally as high for people who never indulged in these things pre op as they are for those who did. We need to learn and practice coping skills to avoid falling into the trap of new addictions. 3) Quick and easy intoxication. We get tipsy faster on less. There are plenty of reasons why this could be bad. Driving would be dangerous. You could end up in dangerous situations when quickly intoxicated. Or you could have poor judgment about what you put in your mouth while intoxicated. I tend to want to eat when tipsy. If I did that in the early stages I'd probably have had a lot more of those painful stuck food or vomiting episodes from eating too much, too fast, wrong foods, and not chewing. I have wine now at 14 months out. 4oz hits me hard and can make me slur my words and be unsteady on my feet. I only drink alcohol at home now, never in public (I like my Saturday night glass of wine - my indulgence after a long week). Mainly because I'd be embarrassed to seem so drunk in public and driving home would be very unwise. These three reasons were stressed and drilled into me over and over and over pre op and post op during support group meetings.

    Hair loss?

what's the Nioxin shampoo got to do with it and what kind? I know you said Nioxin brand. I take 5000 in Biotin and yes I'm bad about forgetting my multi because it upsets my stomach so I forget to take it. I know I don't get nearly the amount of grams in protein as you mentioned. Just got my hair color/cut/styled Friday and my stylist could tell it was thinned out from 7 weeks ago, she couldn't believe it.

    Expectations of the band

Funny you ask this. See ... in the beginning, I decided to have the band because it was not too invasive and it was a slower loss than GB, so odds were good that I would not need excess skin removed. I told myself if I lost 100 pounds in 2 years, that would be fantastic. THEN...I was on here reading about people losing 20-30 pounds in the first month or two, and 10 pounds every month after that, and I got jealous. I was comparing my results too much to others' results and was becoming disappointed with myself--doubting myself...even though my results were still on track with my initial expectations. I had to stop reading the site for awhile. If I had read the POST-Operation posts PRE-Operation, maybe I would have been prepared for the aftermath of the actual surgery. I finally realized that my "new" expectations were too high and only based on what some others were experiencing. Eventually my fills started working and I started losing weight. I actually don't even think I'll be getting a fill at my appointment on Friday since I've lost 16 of my 34 pounds since April (yes...I only lost 18 pounds my first 4-5 months...). My 34 pounds (lost since surgery) is not alot, but where would I be without the Band? 10 pounds heavier? On another diet, only to gain 20 more over the next year? Now, I'm on my way to being 1/2 way to goal in my first year and AT goal in 2. My point here---don't let what you read here, and other people's successes make your expectations UNREALISTIC. Everyone is an individual so keep that in mind. This is NOT a fast and easy way to go. Exercise, eat right, and it'll work for you. I'm just happy that I can still eat most of what I like (it's harder, and I eat less of it, but can still enjoy most things except bread...). And -- I don't have to worry about how much heavier I'll be in the next year, or five years.... Good luck to you.

    Discouraged

You are right on target. Are you getting in your protein FIRST? That will help fight the hunger. As for the other people, don't let them put you down. Explain that this is a tool for weight loss not a magic wand. Tell them that you have a long long way to go and you'll let them know how much weight you have lost when you're ready to tell it. Please don't give up....you can do it.
  13. I am in week 4 and I have been doing awesome up to this point ....lost 26 lbs. but I did not loss any weight this week. Has this happened to anyone else. I am so scared that I went through this and I'm not going to loss weight. I have been following my post-op diet to a T and have not put one thing in my mouth that I shouldn't......

    Getting Banded 9/4

I love how you sugar coated it to ease the pain..... lol (luv ya, tmf) Good luck with your journey. We are her to offer you support when you need it. The pre op diet is about preparing your liver for surgery and the post op diet is about your stomach healing. Try not to worry about weight loss during this time. Make sure you have a good supply of sugar free Popsicles they saved me during the liquid stage. Take care and keep us posted.
  15. I'm about to be 3 months post op and have lost 45 lbs. I'm very happy with my weight loss but I've hit my second stall. I'm already going on 2 weeks without losing. Is this normal at this point?

    Frustrated

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and for the first month my meal volume was limited to 2 ounces per meal. That is almost nothing. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. I found that if I met the fluid, vitamin and protein requirement, I had all the energy I needed. In your case since you are very much on the go, you might need a little extra protein. So I guess I am saying don't stress on the meals, but rather put your focus on meeting your fluid, vitamin and protein goals. If you are weak, it can be due to dehydration. If you are weak it can be due to an electrolyte deficiency (such as potassium and sodium). Without sufficient protein, your body will scavenge protein from other areas of your body, such as your muscles. Protein is extremely important after surgery as its job in the body is to build and maintain tissues including your body's major organs and skeletal muscles. Protein deficiency, when continued over a long period of time can cause a disease known as protein caloric malnutrition. Common symptoms are poor healing, fatigue, hair loss and muscle wasting. Immediate post op, protein promotes healing of the staple line and incisions.
  17. Hello everyone. I had my request for surgery sent into bcbs last Tuesday after all of my pre op testing was complete. Today I received this message from my case manager. I tried to call to make sense of it all and basically am reading it as I have to wait another year for surgery. (WTF). How do I go about this message, I called up there and my case manager was busy. Now it's after 5 and I'm unsure how to somehow get my insurance to accept my request. SIDE NOTE: I actually do have a year worth of weight loss attempt consecutively since February of last year as written down for them to know. I just don't know how I can get my physician to document it... or idk if I have to do this for another year simply Bc I was not aware that I had to have 12 months of that documented with a physician or else I would have been seeing one. If anyone can tell me their story or help me understand how to go about this, that will be much appreciated. Xoxo
  18. I've never really been a huge drinker, and before surgery it was not uncommon for me to go many months without a drink. I had my surgery Nov., 2015 and am living an entirely different lifestyle in a new country where drinking alcohol is the one common denominator at every social event. Because I suffer from social anxiety, this appeals to me because it calms me down and makes me more outgoing and friendly. That is, if I wasn't drinking I would stay home. My question is how does this effect weight loss and maintaining weight?

    Disapointed but hopeful???

Tracy I had to do three months of weight loss managment too! I did it for a year but not EVERY FOUR WEEKS so it didn't count. NOW I went in Oct, Nov, Dec but they want me to weigh in ONE MORE TIME in January! I also had to get my last 5 YEARS from my doctor to PROVE I've been over weight! NOW I WAIT to see if they will approve me! I went in Aug, Oct, Nov, and Dec so I'm HOPING this will SATISFY THEM!! I honestly think they just want to WAIT for the new year and I have to meet my deductable again!!! GRRRR Anyway, to answer one of your questions I was told by my Doctors office that my insurance doesn't care if I lose weight or not. I have BCBS of OKLA. I have read where if you get under a certain BMI then they won't approve you but I have a HIGH BMI! Hope this HELPS! There are SEVERAL of us on the WAITING TRAIN....HOPING to get to ONEDERLAND!!!

Hello Everyone New To The Site....

I'm so excited for you newbies! I'll start my 5th week tomorrow....almost at a 20 lb. loss! And that's w only 2 pre-op days of liquids. I'm so glad I did this.....not one regret. It really changes the way you look at food. For me, I felt best after I had 2 weeks under my belt, as far as healing goes. Plus, there is that fear of the unknown.....this is all new to us. I still don't have much energy and have a problem getting in enough Protein. But I'm working on it and it's improving. I'm excited to see you've joined this amazing group of people who share so easily w everyone. Congrats on your new life!

    frustrated.

Calm down. You just had major surgery a few days ago! Give yourself a break. You are too early into this to throw your hands up and declare surgery failed. Everyone gains and loses weight in the first few weeks as your body tries to adjust. PUT THE SCALE AWAY! I know it's exciting to check your progress but it can also be very discouraging if you're expecting huge loss and don't. Like Laura said, you didn't gain it all in one day and you sure as heck are not going to lose it in one either! Crying is normal. I had one day where I cried and cried for no reason. I was watching Wendy Williams for gods sake and started bawling! Lol! It's OK! Things will get better. Just relax, concentrate on getting better, drink your water and walk, that's all you need to do right now. The first few months are the toughest, you will make it! Good luck and congrats!

    frist day of school

Congratulations on your GREAT weight loss! I'm so happy that you're feeling so good. Believe it or not, your kids will love you just the same - heavy or thin. My kids are now 23 and 20. One's complimented me on my weight loss, the oldest hasn't even noticed. But I feel so much better and have so much more energy. Best of luck to you!

    Bacon....

Hi all, I am 6 weeks post op and I am having a really hard time with breakfast. Per my surgeons guidelines, he recommends avoiding bacon, sausage (even chicken), ham etc. but my issue is that I hate eggs! So I am tired of having protein shakes and yogurt for breakfast. I also don’t want to eat chicken or seafood every morning. I’ve had some bacon and I’m wondering if I am “cheating” and messing myself up. I hit a stall at 3 weeks, had my menstrual, and went up! It finally broke last week and I lost what I gained but it just doesn’t feel like I’ve made any progress in weeks! I’ve lost 22 pounds since surgery on 2/24 and with my 2 months coming up I feel like I should have lost at least 30 since my starting weight was over 300 pounds! Here are my questions: 1. For those who’ve had a VSG what was your average weekly and/or monthly weight loss after the first month? 2. Do you eat bacon, sausage, or ham for breakfast? 3. Have you cheated and still lost? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give because I am going crazy!
