I will be having surgery spring 2015 and I am trying to increase my Protein intake prior to surgery so that by the time I have my surgery it won't be such a challenge. I am a vegetarian so protein intake is already a struggle. What are some of the best sources (vegetarian) of protein that you have found and what are your favorite protein powders? Thanks!

I’m also a vegetarian, but I’m still pre-op (likely in 6 or so months I’ll have RNY). My surgeon said that she has a lot of patients that are vegetarian.

FYI - I know for sure that red meat thing is an RNY rule. I bet it is just one of the many that got automatically transferred to the band by those docs who are used to doing the RNY. I had not heard of that "rule" about red meat until well after I had been banded, and I've never heard the bread "rule" until now. lol I eat both. Love that red meat, even though I am a vegetarian at heart... :sick

Been a while...and today saw a colleague I haven't seen for several months....
TES commented on CAsleeve's blog entry in CAsleeve's Blog
congratulations! That must have been a great feeling. I loved the "thin, healthy, fit and glowing" comment. Are you a vegetarian? Can you share any info on your plant-based diet and what works best for you? (I'm a vegetarian so love to learn from VSGers ahead of me about a focus on plant foods.) -

Bored with food choices!
BLERDgirl replied to Runner1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm going to tell you something we were taught not to do as kids; play with your food! Start with the protein you like and then spin it. Try a new seasoning, check out recipes on Pinterest or Eggface. Try a new flavor combo. One year I tried a new veg every 3 months. I discovered celery root, namé and fiddle head ferns. Go to an ethnic market and try something new. Especially if it's a lose bin market where you pay by the pound. Buy a small amount and try it out. Try vegetarian food, try Italian, Mediterranean, Indian seasonings, etc.... -
No don't regret it I had a tough recovery for 2 months I was in and out of the hospital for dehydration because I wasn't able to eat or drink . I'm also lactose intolerant now and I wasn't before. But I'm 7 months out now and I went from 326 to 209 and I have 59 more pounds to go. Stay strong you'll get through this. Get some almond breeze almond milk. I haven't had my surgery but I gave it up about a year ago because it gave me horrendous diarrhea. (Ice cream too:/) almond milk is really good and had good protein too. I thought of it this way, your drinking another species milk, we usually tolerate it but really is it something we should drink? Especially with all the hormones and stuff we put in it. I'm far from a vegetarian but I really don't like milk anymore.

I thought it might be fun to tell some stories that could have ended in disaster, but that ended up being successful, or at least good learning experiences. I'll start. My husband and I went to an outdoor evening wedding today. Yes, it is Arizona, but it was still chilly. I was FREEZING! I had on a long dress, thick stockings, a scarf, a fleece vest and a long wool coat over that, but I got so cold waiting to go into the reception that my teeth were chattering. I had to actually go into the car and get the heater going so I could warm up. This part of weight loss is definitely NOT pleasant - in fact it is downright miserable. But then we got into the reception and meal. Wouldn't you know, there was not a single thing I could eat except some limpish salad greens that were slightly bitter and not real fresh. I cannot eat gluten or dairy. These are not uncommon problems, and the the venue actually had gluten free options - but they all had cheese and milk or butter! And the delicious looking stuffed acorn squash vegetarian dish had wheat! And to boot, I forgot to bring the protein drink I had set out to take! So i nibbled the bad tasting, dry salad greens until I just couldn't do it anymore. There was no tea or decaf coffee, but I did get the kitchen to bring me a cup of plain hot water to sip. By the time we got home I was really, really hungry. But...... on the way home, I planned out a quick meal from some left overs and popped that into the microwave right away. I did eat a spoon full of peanut butter while I was waiting for the meal to heat up. But I managed to stay on plan - at least all the food I ate were "plan" foods - not just raiding the pantry for whatever I could grab. I feel the end result was a success, but a very high risk situation, for sure. What I learned for next time: TAKE THE PROTEIN DRINK, AND a baggie of apple slices/nuts, AND a protein bar. I mistakenly thought there were be SOMETHING I could eat, but didn't fully plan on NOTHING to eat. All three of the items (drink, apple/nut baggie, and protein bar) could have fit in my purse. The evening would have been more enjoyable and I would not have been so ravenous when I got home. AND I would not have eaten later that I would have liked. Unfortunately, there is nothing I could have done about being so cold. There were girls in short dresses and bare legs, and I was bundled up like an Eskimo. I read that this will pass in 18-24 months. I sure hope so.

Hey there everyone. I decided it was just about time that I quit lurking and spoke up! My name is Lori and I am 24 years old. I live in the north Dallas area (Garland, to those familiar) but I go to school in central TX (San Marcos). I was planning on waiting to post here until after I had my consultation this Thursday, but I just got tired of waiting! I am going to be seeing Dr. Nick Nicholson in Plano this Thursday and I am so very excited. I am a self paying patient and I am basically ready to schedule the surgery ASAP so that I have the whole summer to try and lose and get acclimated before I head back to school in the fall. I can't wait to be a new person. I can't wait to look forward to REAL exercise. I can't wait to go to the river with my friends and feel comfortable. I can't wait to hike through the hill country and take beautiful photos of places I've never been able to climb before. I am so excited for this opportunity. So...the nitty gritty...I weigh around 283 right now, hopefully will lose a decent amount in the pre-op diet. I would LOVE to end up in the 145-150 range, but of course I wouldn't mind weighing less :001_tongue:. My BMI is almost 54, yikes, it was pretty shocking when I saw that. I'm only 5'1" so I really think I COULD get down to a healthy 125-130 eventually, but I would be ecstatic if I stayed around a healthy 150 forever. I am glad I decided to do this at my age. I've been a fat kid my entire life so I think I damn well deserve this! I want to be able to live out the rest of my 20's like any other "normal" 20-something. Anywho, I just wanted to introduce myself and possibly get to know some of you great people that I have been cyber stalking on this great forum! You all seem so wonderful and supportive. Cheers to a fresh start! Lori p.s.- I'm a vegetarian and would be very interested in meeting other sleevers that are as well for tips and recipe sharing down the line.

I keep a couple of cans of Trader Joe's Organic Vegetarian Chilli in the cupboard. Nobody at my house really likes chilli so I get my fix this way. I will make my own when its really cold and I am really motivated.

Gardein Meat-less
BigViffer replied to TakingABreak's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Are you vegetarian/vegan or whatever the new term is? Why are you wanting to looking to replace a superior protein (chicken) with a merely good protein (soy)? Don't get me wrong, I love vegetable patties and all kinds of vegetable dishes, but I still wouldn't purposefully replace chicken with soy if I wanted a chicken dish. Chicken is higher in protein, it has a higher bio-availability, and it maintains satiety longer. But if you are doing it for vegetarian lifestyle choice, then it makes sense. -
What will Happen If I Eat Pop Rocks and Coke?
Wheetsin replied to kabeerah's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My question is -- pop-rocks and Coke? Together? Why? Eww... :scared: Here are some good questions (non-bandster) Why do drive-up ATMs have braille on the keypad? If nothing sticks to Teflon, how does Teflon stick to the pan? What color does a Smurf turn if it's choking? Why do we drive on the parkway, but park on the driveway? A stitch in time saves nine what? Crime doesn't pay... does that mean my job is a crime? What do they use to ship styrofoam? Are part-time band leaders semi-conductors? Was the pole vault accidentally discovered by a clumsy javelin thrower? Are you breaking the law if you drive past those road signs that say "Do Not Pass"? "Honesty is the best policy" but "The truth hurts." So is pain good? What happens if you're scared half to death - twice? What happens to an 18 hour bra after 18 hours? Do vegetarians eat animal crackers? Do you think that when they asked George Washington for ID that he just whipped out a quarter? How come wrong numbers are never busy? -
I know ill get a ton of mixed opionons on this but whats your opinion of low carbing?
moonlitestarbrite replied to Wendydarling19's topic in Food and Nutrition
i love this post on a friends blog. bear in mind, she was never morbidly obese, but did go from eating a sugar heavy, low fat, high carb, vegetarian diet to a mostly paleo, no processed foods diet over the course of seven years. she has been searching for "the answer." and was surprised at what she discovered. http://mamasweeds.com/2014/02/23/the-pendulum-and-why-i-broke-up-with-low-carb/ -
Hair never grew back.
oolismom replied to brittanykins's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey brittanykins.... Beings you're a vegetarian isn't there a supplement for hair like Biotin that you would take??? I have many friends who are vegan/vegatarians etc, and it seems like they took vitamin supplements for their hair and nails. I took this a year before surgery and nails grow fine and a little hair comes out here and there but I'm like you I have so much of it....It scares me that I might lose too much so as soon as I can get my head back on straight I'm going back to the Biotin...And I do wear my hair short and spikey like so to conceal some of that....But i'm used to thick hair and want to kepp it too....I haven't seen where the shampoo kits have made a difference in my Moms thinning hair so I can't recommend any of those, someone else maybe could I just haven't seen any results of proof....I know too sometimes I used Coconut oil as a scalp treatment/conditioner maybe that could help...But stay true to your natural stuff ask at the health food places, but you want to see some actual results....Why, if we have to lose our hair, why could it not have been our mustaches or leg hairs some place that requires waxing for cryin out loud.....lolo kim -
I just ordered a juicer and I can't wait for it to come in. I have so much trouble eating vegetables (they get stuck easily) unless I cook them to death and even then I sometimes have trouble and they have lost a lot of their nutrients. I am looking forward to getting in some wonderful nutrients without having to struggle with eating them. I eventually want to do a fast, but I think at first i will be having juice for Breakfast and a snack, and eat solid food at lunch and dinner. My hubby and I are going on a cruise next month and when I get back, I plan on doing a juice fast to detox and then plan to follow a vegetarian diet. I have been looking online for recipes and I signed up for a free e-book that has 25 recipes. I am going to attempt to paste the recipes, but if it doesn't work, check out www.myjuicecleanse.com http://app.getrespon...=Br&s=IcDkK&y=Q&

Hrsnjs replied to %^&'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Not sure if your program allows beans...but vegetarian refried beans (lower in fat) with red enchilada sauce and cheese melted in. My fave soft food stage meal! Also soups were great...I tolerated split pea and broccoli cheese well. Sent from my moto g(6) play using BariatricPal mobile app -
I was a vegetarian before I got the band. Now I crave meat. Very strange. Dietitian says I need to eat more protein. Could you all give me some examples of some good tasting high proteins? I am eating meat now. PS did not eat much protein before band.

Restaurants
GreenTealael replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Restaurants are usually more than willing to accommodate substitutions and understand that people have complex diets. I have seen vegetarian, diabetic/keto friendly, gluten free, etc menu categories. I have also looked up menus prior to going places. When ordering I either ask for everything on the side or without everything I don’t want. My BF says that I do *appear* high maintenance at restaurants. But I have always been that way because I am kosher, sometimes I was a strict vegetarian/vegan and have a shellfish allergy too so cross contamination is dangerous for me. WLS was just one more layer. If all else fails I order salad or ice water, tea or dessert 🤣 -

Vegetarian food
FindingElise replied to brittersmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 6/4. I get most of my protein from dairy and vegetarian sources. If by veggie foods you mean Morningstar, Boca, etc., I tried to eat a Morningstar griller patty last week and ended up in pain. They are kind of dry, and didn't feel too comfy in my sleeve. The week before I was able to eat a chickpea patty, and it didn't cause any trouble (but only 1/4 of it sure did fill me up). Products will vary. -
Why do people think you are crazy when you tell them your considering WLS?
stacythegreat replied to kelmelmom24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't tell anybody but family that I was doing it. I have told people after I had it done and only got one negative comment from a guy who is a vegetarian and very thin. People are just stupid sometimes. You are doing this for you not them so just try to tune the negatives out. Good luck, your doing the right thing. -
I've been a vegetarian for a long time and a portion of that time I was vegan. I had been thinking about going back to a vegan diet just before I decided to have wls. Now I think I'm going to remain just a vegetarian until well after my surgery. Once I am comfortable with my new life style, I might look at going back being a vegan. There are a lot of vegetable based Protein out there and if your still having trouble getting enough, there are the Protein shakes. Have you tried Vega? It's vegan and has everything!
