  1. I wouldn't drink 5-7 of them. That would be a lot of calories! Each low-sugar or sugar free protein drink has between 100-160 calories about, so there is no reason to drink 5-7 of them AND have 2 additional meals. And while some are good with vitamins and minerals, while you can, try to get them from real food. Plus, you'll get sick of them, and for a while after surgery, you won't be able to eat solids, so you'll be living on them. I drink one a day (160 calories) that is premixed as a part of a meal when the meal is too small or for breakfast with fruit. I'm aiming for 1200-1400 calories; this was recommended by the bariatric nutritionist (i'm also pre-op). I used to drink about 5-6 diet sodas a day. I knew I wouldn't be able to drink soda after surgery, so I quit cold turkey. I thought that was going to be impossible, but I tried a soda after a few weeks, and I had actually lost my taste for it. Now I drink plain water and iced coffee (for two months I didn't even drink iced coffee!). I don't miss it. The harder part is not drinking with my meals and eating slowly.

How Long Did you have to wait for surgery

Once I got approved it was 7 weeks. But, I also got my approval the last few days of November 2019 and everyone and their mother wanted to have their surgery in December so they had to schedule mine in January 2020. And the end of January at that! 🙄 For most I thinks it's about 3-4 weeks after approval. Because, you know, the 2 week pre-op diet that most bariatric surgeons require and all... Hope everything goes smoothly for you and you get your surgery soon!
  3. Your rate of loss is very personal. Some older women lose quickly, others more slowly. Just as some younger women lose slowly & others rapidly. You may have fewer or more stalls on the way. I do remember people used to say it was harder to lose weight as you get older. Not bariatric surgery related. Just one of those things people said. Old wives’ tale or fact I don’t know. In saying that, I was 2 months shy of 54 & menopausal when I had surgery. I reached my goal at 6 months (31kgs/68lbs) at a pretty average rate. I then lost more in the year after - just over an additional 11kgs/25lbs. A good friend, a year older & also menopausal was slower, about 9 months to lose a similar amount to reach her goal & she’s way more active than me. Good luck. You’ll get there in your time.
  4. The bariatric soft chews are horrible, I need suggestions lol. They taste chalky
  5. Welcome! Glad you found this forum -- it has been incredibly helpful for me as I've gone through this process. There's a lot of great info and advice here! I lost about 70 pounds in the 5 months before surgery, and hands down, the best thing I did to prepare was logging everything I ate in MyFitnessPal. I think that was the key to my pre-surgery weight loss and is something I've continued since my surgery. There are other similar apps (there's one called Baritastic that's specifically made for bariatric surgery patients), but I started with MyFitnessPal and liked it, so I'm sticking with it. I think it's also a good idea to get into the habit of drinking more water and tracking your water intake (you can do that in MyFitnessPal, too). I didn't really work out before surgery, and maybe it would have helped if I had started earlier, but I started a few months after surgery and now I work out and take walks every day.

    Any surgery regrets?

I never had any regrets when I had my lap band put in 11+ years ago, despite getting horrible GERD and that the band likely causing my hiatal hernia. And I really don't think I will regret my revision to a VSG two weeks ago either. Not to go to "a dark place" in this thread but honestly, the point that my bariatric surgeon brought up in the seminar when I was considering the lap band years ago was "Why is it that you never see anyone who is old and obese? Because if you're obese you generally don't make it to old age." That has just stayed with me ever since. Wishing you all the best on your journey!!

Calling all vets- where are you

It's similar for me. I've had a sore throat since December. I take two PPIs plus an H2 daily. Often take zofran due to the nausea and vomiting. I eat a very limited diet right now to try to keep it all in check. Endoscopy showed reflux and gastritis. My gastroenterologist sent me back to my bariatric surgeon. Saw my surgeon last week and he said the next step is upper GI xrays to make sure the endoscopy didn't miss anything. I have a lot of rashes from excess abdominal skin and was hoping I could starting looking into skin removal this year but I guess not now
  9. Has any one had surgery at Trinity Bariatrics, Cheektowaga NY? Just curious of experiences :)
  10. Hi All! I am just beginning the process of Weight Loss Surgery. I am going through the Cleveland Clinic and I have my first appointment with the surgeon on Tuesday and then after that I have appointments set with the nutritionist, Psychology and Bariatric MD. I guess I just don't know what to expect with the first visit, Due to Covid they are all virtual visits So I won't have an exam or anything. Is it just information or will we decide which procedure would be best for me? Has anyone here had their surgery at Cleveland Clinic? I'm nervous but very excited to get started.

    Missing something from my diet.

First congratulations on your surgery. In weeks 5 & 6 post surgery many of us on on soft food (minced meats, fish, eggs, rolled oats, slow cooked casseroles/stews, chunkier soups, etc.). But there are many different programs. What did your surgeon recommend you should be eating at this stage? Do you have a nutritionalist? If you don’t, ask your surgeon for a recommendation to one who has experience with bariatric patients. They should be able to recommend foods you could be eating for breakfast, lunch & dinner & offer guidelines for a healthy, balanced eating plan. At weeks 5 & 6 I was eating about 1/4 - 1/3 cup of soft food three times a day & a drinking yoghurt. I was advised to aim for 60g of protein each day. Again some surgeon’s recommend more. I wasn’t given a caloric goal either just the portion size recommendation & that was a plenty big enough serving size. It can be challenging to find foods that taste nice & your tummy will tolerate the first couple of months. I worked out a fairly simple rotation of food I could eat & then slowly added new things. Plus if you’re like I was & you aren’t hungry or interested in food it can be even harder. I just made myself have something. Two bites is better than none in regards to getting your nutrients in. 32lbs is not an ‘only’ amount. That’s averaging about 6lbs a week. Pretty darn good. Celebrate every pound you lose.

    Low BMI ESG or VSG

What are you prices like in South Carolina? In my state the prices were really high. Since I was self pay too and low BMI I really wanted an all in 1 price where I went in and got things taken care of all in a week or so. I only found a handful of places that accepted low BMI and were all in one pricing and a good price. In the south I found a doctor called Dr. Shillingford. The office staff was very professional and they gave me a good amount of information to prepare for surgery. I really was planning on going to him but with my family it just worked out to go closer to home. I found a surgery center in the next state 3 hours from me. If you do not know a "good" price for all in one pricing would be $8,000-$12,000 in the USA. Where I am going it is $12,000 for sleeve. I am getting bypass and it is $16,000. Dr. Shillingford is close to the coast and beach area. You could make a nice relaxing vacation. I believe 3 days was enough for getting testing done (at the time I was interested in sleeve), surgery and recovery. You stayed at a hotel and were to come back 1 week from surgery to get stitches out and a check....you could possibly get someone local to do that. In my area no one would take a patient unless it was 1 year after surgery. It makes me nervous. I used to go to a bariatric center local and may go back...IDK. I didn't see the doctor but the nurse. I just am not sure is all. MAYBE if I have a complication they would see me. I feel better seeing someone in bariatrics then my own PCP.

    The Dr. Nowzaradan Drinking Game

yea - I thought everyone who got this was the size of the people on that show. I thought I'd be the smallest person in my classes. Nope. I was the biggest. I also led one of the classes that the pre-ops at my clinic had to go through - did it monthly for three years (until COVID hit). I NEVER saw anyone the size of the people on that show. Everyone appeared to weigh in the 200s and 300s (mostly 200s). Occasionally there was one who might have been in the low 400s. But that's it. And actually, there are surgeons who won't operate on people who have a BMI higher than 60 - and hardly any will operate on people the size of the ones on My 600 lb Life - which is why they have to go to surgeons like Dr. Now who specialize in high-risk bariatric surgery. So I think the show gives people unrealistic perceptions.

Bariatric Fusion Vitamins & Lead Warning

You may want to check out ProCare, Bariatric Advantage, and Celebrate. They are all bariatric vitamin companies. Most will send free samples, and if not, they offer low cost samples. Four a day forever is a lot. I’m going with ProCare’s one a day with iron and the calcium chews after one month post op. Two nutritionists at different bariatric practices ok’ed the above vitamins plus Opurity by Unjury. Good luck!

    The Dr. Nowzaradan Drinking Game

I have mixed feelings about that show. a pro is that it exposes more people to bariatric surgery, which hopefully has reduced the stigma somewhat and made people realize it isn't the scary thing it was 30 or 40 years ago cons: it's very formulaic , so I can only watch one or two episodes at one sitting. It gets pretty boring - and predictable - after that it gives more "normal" WLS patients (i.e, those of us who weigh in the 200s and 300s) unrealistic expectations, like they're going to lose 40 lbs the first month, so we see a lot of concerned and upset people when they "only" lost 15 or 20 lbs the first month I hate the way the people on the show are exploited - like being shown on the toilet or in the shower. Really?? Do we have to see that? also, so many of these people have really serious issues. I guess it helps with the ratings, but I don't know where they find some of these people. It's so great to see the occasional person on there who doesn't have some serious hangups or issues - but they seem to be few and far between I've read that some people watch - and far prefer - the UK series, "The Fat Doctor", since it's more realistic, but I've yet to watch it.

    Bad Advice and being honest.

I eat everything. The quantity I eat is much smaller, but if I really want it, I eat it. I was kind of hoping I would be a dumper prior to surgery so I would have that as a deterrent from eating things I shouldn’t, but I haven’t found anything I dump on. Now I am super glad I don’t dump, because I love food. Last Friday we went out to dinner and I ordered chicken and waffles. It was soooo good! I ate about 1/3 of the chicken and less than a quarter of the waffle, plus a few brussels sprouts. I also drank a large glass of wine before I started on the food. I took the rest of the food (and the bottle of wine) home and ate the rest of the chicken for breakfast the next day with a couple bites of waffle. I ate a few more bites of the waffle and some more of the sprouts later that day and threw the rest away. Maybe by bariatric standards my food choices make me a terrible person, doomed for failure at maintaining my weight. Maybe we all need to make our own choices, based on our own values and realities. Honestly, I am ok with being judged as a terrible person doomed for failure 😬 Judge away. You do you, Boo 😘

Starting out on Soft Food Diet

See if your dietician or bariatric group will give you a list of specific examples. When I was on soft foods, I ate mashed potatoes, refried beans, cream soups, yogurt (the whipped greek yogurt was my favorite), cottage cheese, cream of wheat, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, soft poached fish.

Bariatric Fusion Vitamins & Lead Warning

I've seen that warning on a few other products, too. if you decide to switch brands, just make sure whatever you choose meets the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery requirements (I've attached the report - you'll have to scroll done to see the requirements). With most drug store/grocery store brands, like Centrum, for example, you'll have to take two a day to meet the requirements. With some bariatric-specific vitamins, you only need to take one. Also, although most of us do take chewables for the first few weeks or months after surgery (I took them for the whole first year), most people switch over to regular tablets at some point. https://asmbs.org/app/uploads/2017/06/ASMBS-Nutritional-Guidelines-2016-Update.pdf
  22. My bariatric nutritionist and doctor’s office recommended the Bariatric Fusion brand of chewable multivitamins to take 4x daily basically for the rest of my life. When reading the package, there’s a Proposition 65 warning: “Warning: consuming this product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which are known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.” I didn’t find much after searching online aside from a lawsuit and settlement agreement about lead in their products from 2018, and related health and safety code violation. (https://www.oag.ca.gov/prop65/60-Day-Notice-2017-02545) Does anyone have any insight on this? I’m thinking if I need to take these for the rest of my life, I should be switching to a safer brand! Thanks
  23. Same here with the fruit chews, but I take Bariatric Advantage...and I LOVE them...they are like a treat...well, will be when they let me take them again! But pre-op, they were great!!
  24. I bought the OPURITY® Bariatric Multivitamin With Iron Chewable Supplements (90 Day Supply) thinking it would be easier to take, they would be absorbed better ( I am super worried about malabsorption) and I would only need 1 a day. But I wish I had tried them first - the taste is hard to describe - chalk with super tart berries. It’s painful to take even 1. I think I might toss them - I’ve got enough challenges. Trying to chew a multivitamin should not be one of them. I was told to avoid gummies. I might opt for a pill instead.
