  1. Hello fellow NY and other sleevers! I'm a newbie but have been lurking awhile! I am in the beginning stages. I had my initial workup 14 mos ago and a follow up last month. I'm in the Albany Medical Center program. Anyone else had their procedure there? I'd love to connect... Ive done a ton of research and definitely hope the sleeve will be approved by my insurance. (MEDICARE) BY the time I'm prepped and ready! I have my initial nutrition consult and education in 2 weeks. I've lost 10#s towards my necessary loss. I finally understand that its a "tool" - one of many that will help me get healthy. I look forward to moving ahead with you and receiving tips & tidbits as well as encouraging you on the journey! !
  2. I was banded on May 26th at 211. I now am at 197. I just had my first fill of 4ccs two days ago. I cannot eat anything! The pain is not worth it!!!!!!!! I am looking forward to more weight loss with this new restriction, but it is difficult to get used to.

    Needing some encouragement.

Are you tracking everything you eat and drink on an app like My Fitness Pal? I had a lap band for about 7 years and I did lose weight, but not all that I wanted to. So it was successful to some extent. On my post op journey while reading forums here, it was frustrating to see others who had RNY, DS or Sleeve losing weight faster than me. Lap band definitely offers slower weight loss results than the other surgeries. So I understand how you're feeling. While we spend months trying to get the perfect restriction (green zone) the other folks who have RNY, DS, Sleeve, and I don't want to leave out the MGB this time (for @MiniGastricBypassDude 😂 Sorry I left your surgery out up there ^ 😂) folks that had these surgeries were losing weight from day one. It's just harder for banders, we really in some ways have to work harder because we have more time from post op with less restriction. So hang in there, exercise if you can and track your food and make good food choices, optimize your protein. Best wishes!
  4. I had a lanyard that I hung around my neck and fed the drain tube through. It helped tons when I was in the shower because it supported the drain so that I could use both hands to wash my hair and bathe. If you're concerned about water getting into your incision, you might put a bandaid over the opening on your skin.
  5. Take a shower. Put another bandaid on if it makes you feel better, but I showered with mine for 8 days with no problems. I'm allergic to latex, so no bandaids on mine at all. I couldn't swim or tub bathe until all the incisions healed completely, but I was allowed to shower and wash my hair two days after surgery.
  6. “I could never do weight loss surgery, I wouldn’t want to take all those vitamins”....uh, what? That’s what’s holding you back? Vitamins?

    Me Before October 2015

From the album: Before & After Pics

This was taken in October 2015. Before I started my weight Loss journey.
  8. Oct 12 update. Doing okay had some random sharp pains in the right hand side so started taking Tylenol again and it has improved. Had an issue with the incisions so went to back to surgeon and spoke to his pa. Turns out i was allergic to the glue..they removed all the glue and put steri strips on the open wounds. Still sooo itchy...trying not to scratch. I feel I can eat too much. I’m on the puréed stage and I ate 3 oz of beans and I know we shouldn’t eat more than 1.5 at a time. My weight loss has been slow. Most people Lose 10 lbs a week per my anecdotal research on this board. On oct 1 I weight 284 and today I weighed 277. Of course on Oct 2 I weight 294, lol. I will weight on Oct 15 which will be exactly 2 weeks. I’m happy with the loss, but really want one of these 10 lb weeks. Still really happy as I’m down 30 lbs from my high of 307 🙂 So far getting protein in no problem. Getting 64 oz of liquid a bit harder need to step it up......
  9. This is not my advise but I didn't really work out during my weight loss phase... I plan to start soon!! :-)
  10. Okay, so, I had an appointment with my PC Doctor yesterday and he really put my nerves at ease. He gave me the results of my EKG and said it was normal and all my labs are good except I have elevated cholesterol. He also told me he has many patients who have had weight loss surgery and they all have done quite well. We also discussed some other tests my sleeve surgeon wants and my doctor ordered those. He said I'll do great after surgery and that was good to hear. I was nervous he was going to be against the surgery for some reason and I'm more than happy that I was wrong. Now I'm just anxious and impatient which is the normal me lol. I also started a video blog so that I can talk about the surgery and my decision and just get things out since I haven't really been talking to anyone about it. Hope everyone is having a good Friday the 13th!

    Help with exercise plan

I'd actually disagree with that recommendation - cardio is usually the easiest and most effective for people to be starting off, it will kick start weight loss, and what's the point of starting any strength training now, for 3 measly weeks when you're going to have to take a few weeks off that after the surgery? You may as well wait - whereas you can walk a day after the surgery! Also, with neck, shoulder and back pain, no matter what, starting exercising is going to make you hurt, and I wouldnt go aggravating that just now. If you're really out of shape, I'd make a commitment to walk as many days as possible between now and your surgery. In even as little as 3 weeks, you might bring your blood pressure down a little, might improve your blood chemistry and get your heart a bit stronger - all important things that will minimise the risk of an anaesthetic. What's more, you can build a little fitness and if you can get out a day or two after your surgery, and build up over the following week or two, you might even retain that extra fitness you've built!

@chris1985 hey dude/aka newbie!!! I agree @Diana_in_Philly - eating too fast is very bad. you must slllllow it down. chew into small bites, THEN swallow. No gulping allowed!! (people have been shot for less!!) use small (baby) utensils, that will help FORCE you to eat slowly. put utensil down between bites. then start again with eating. DON'T drink any water while you are eating anything! don't drink 30 minutes before you eat, then wait 30 minutes after you eat til you drink. find a support group in your area. (doc should help you/or office) maybe you could make a friend, then you can help each other. this board is very helpful, informative. continue to ask your questions, you'll there are bariatric books with recipes too. one example is Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies lots of information on various web sites!! KNOWLEDGE is POWER!! Good luck - kathy
  13. Hello - I thought I would share one experience I had with my banding process. With so much paperwork we (at least me) just sign without reading the fine print. In the first stack of paperwork was an optional agreement to participate in a medical study (basically, allowing my dr to relay my weight loss and blood workup, ..stuff that needs to be done anyway). I agreed and signed it. I was in the pre-op room getting blood drawn, wiping my body down with antibacterial rags and getting ready for surgery in 30 minutes. A medical student came by and asked me to sign this paperwork to participate in a study. I read the fine print and they were going to take a liver biopsy (cut a chunk off my liver). First off I was overwhelmed with anxiety 30 minutes before surgery and couldn't believe that was in the fine print. The med student says "oh, everyone participates for the most part, its just paperwork". I said F U and told my surgeon when he visited me prior to surgery to not take a liver biopsy. Happy banding!

    Too soon to try?

Well, I can understand a lot of what you're talking about. Most assuredly you're in a better place for pregnancy (at least as a doc would view things) being more than half a year from surgery. And some doctors will let their patients try to conceive even sooner post op. My twins were nearing the same age when we decided to get pregnant, too. I didn't want too much of an age difference, so I really do understand that part of things. If there isn't a fertility concern I would wait one year post op but that's me. I had issues eating for more than a year post op. It wasn't until the six months prior to my two year anniversary that I could eat more normally, skip shakes if I didn't want them and had my Vitamin deficiencies under control. Would a healthy and happy pregnancy prior to that time been possible? Absolutely. Other people have done it and had no real problems or complications. A lot depends on where you are in your diet and overall health. As far as baby weight, unfortunately, very few folks have come back to update post op. It could be that they're too busy or that they're ashamed because they haven't been able to lose it. I do know that of the handful of regain posts I've seen, some of them were ladies that had babies post sleeve. But I think that the same principles that apply to maintenance/loss prior to a baby apply afterward and that a lot of this can be avoided if you're healthy, don't develop bad habits or go completely off track because you're pregnant and if you've got the emotional food issues under control. I've had a perfectly normal weight gain with my pregnancy and anticipate no real issues shedding the weight afterward, though I do expect it to go slowly much the way losing my last twenty pounds to goal went before I got pregnant. This is really something you should weigh and consider after seeing both your OB/GYN and your surgeon, to see what they have to say. Good luck, ~Cheri
  15. Are you on only clear protein? I know those clear Isopure drinks are putrid, but they have so much protein. It's the after-taste that kill you. I drink them while holding my nose, and i keep holding it for about a minute afterwards, until the smell passes. I've heard Unjury: chicken soup and the unflavored kind are decent (I've ordered some - surgery on Friday - clear liquids for the first 10 days). I plan on mixing it with the water zero flavored drink which I quite like. I pray I don't have an aversion to milk and the like - I love milk- that would be a great loss. Good luck
  16. 3 days without weight loss is completely normal. It isn't a stall until it lasts 10 days. If you are confident you are following your program correctly, just keep doing what you are doing. You may want to avoid the scale for a few weeks if it is stressing you out
  17. I felt the same way. I am 3 weeks post op and I am very happy. The first 2 weeks weeks were tough but since I moved to soft foods I am happier. You are mourning the loss of food. It is normal. You made the right decision.
  18. Ugh. I hate that the insurance companies make this a hassle for people. Mine won't cover because my BMI is below 40 and I don't have scary enough co-morbids. Doctors should be the ones making the decisions for their patients, NOT insurance companies. It's like they want to make us wait until our health gets worse before they will cover it. I am blessed to have a supportive husband and the ability to self pay because it sounds like going through insurance is a nightmare. I feel immense sympathy for everyone going through their difficult process. It's a lose-lose. My insurance would've only covered me after 6 months of supervised weight loss but since I am BMI 37 I would've had to NOT lose much or else I'd be below 35 and they wouldn't cover me no matter what. Seems incredibly stupid. So if my doc thinks I do need the surgery I'd have to diet for 6 months to not lose more than like 20 lbs. Insurance companies are wasting people's time. I'm sure it's useful for some but most of us have already tried every diet under the sun. It seems like if they agreed before they should agree again! Try not to worry

    Real Food

Wow you completed the quadruple bipass! That thing is crazy big! My husband couldn't even do the double. Now that you are banded you'll have to stick to their milkshakes made with a stick of butter! lol Congrats on your starting weight loss!
  21. I went through the exact same thing!!! I researched it for about a year and a half and after yo yo dieting and taking the pills I gave it a shot. It is the best thing that I have done for my weight loss. You definitely have to do what is right for you. If you get the channel look at my journey on you tube. My screen name is 2livesmart. I actually have a video talking about whether or not getting the lap band surgery is another weight loss fad. Also, find a local support group and connect with others that have the band. It will definitely help. If you have questions please do not hesitate to ask. I had and still have plenty. I have only been banded for 5 months. Good luck on your journey. I wish you all the best!

    Exercise

I walk as often as I can and on average four days a week. Started with about a mile and have been doing 2.5 to 3 miles for quite some time now. I don't jog but I don't saunter either. Guess I'd call it a fast walk. Didn't do any weight training until this week. I lost some muscle mass in my upper arms so I'm trying to get some of that back. But I have to say that I feel absolutely great and look forward to walking. I started walking on my treadmill but soon changed to walking in a park near my home. I enjoy the park more and so does my black lab. I'm 27 weeks post-op and it took several months but at this point I'm really quite addicted to walking. There is absolutely no question in my mind that walking has helped me enormously with the weight loss. I also feel better, physically and mentally, when I walk. I have noticed that I get tense and irritable when I don't walk for two or three days. Can't explain it but it definitely happens.

    Introduction

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your decision to pursue the lap band. I'm sorry to hear of your health issues - hopefully with some weight loss, some of them will be reduced. There certainly are some foods and drinks that you would be wise to avoid after the band. There are few that you "cannot" have, but many that you should not. I was also worried about giving up some of my favorites. But let me encourage you! You will be amazed by how many things you will be able to give up after you have the band. First of all, your tastes will change a bit, and you may find that there are things that tasted great before, that suddenly aren't so good. (soda was one of those things for me) Second, without the constant hunger that comes with most diets, you'll find your willpower is much more....well, powerful. Since you aren't physically hungry, it is easier to control your cravings. And finally, the first time you get food stuck because you've eaten something on the no-no list, or you've eaten more than your new tummy can handle - you will learn that it is less painful and uncomfortable to just follow the rules. I also had a coffee addiction. I've switched to one large mug of half caf coffee in the morning with fat free vanilla creamer (yay for that yummy stuff!). I've switched to iced tea or Water for all the rest of my fluids. Hope this is helpful info, and keep the questions coming - there are a lot of people here who have experience and will want to help!

    Fingernails brittle. .

Ugh, I gave up on my fingernails years and years ago. I have TERRIBLE nails and quite fragile brittle hair too, no matter what I eat, take or do. So does my mum and so does my five year old daughter - and of course both my boys got my husband's glorious thick hair and nails. If I am to have nice nails, they have to be fake, end of story. I've discovered biosculpture though - much nicer than big chunky square acrylics, it looks simply like a coat of clear (or coloured) varnish and your nails look totally natural, they just stay strong and unbroken. If you've had nice nails before, it might simply be a matter of taking a good multi or hair/nails/skin supplement. But like hair, the damaged nail will have to grow through before you notice the difference.
