  1. Regarding consumed vs absorbed, i would hazard a guess that consumed calories is the measurement. Wouldn’t absorbed calories de difficult to determine? Everyone will have different absorption rates. Maybe better to over estimate than under. Your scale and labs will tell u if u need to eat more or less. Regarding weight loss calories, again it depends on the person and their current weight as well as their current activity level. For me, i could lose weight eating 1800 calories when i was very active, but today that same amount is my maintenance level. My NUT was more concerned about the macro makeup of my meals vs a caloric goal. But she did say, if I remember correctly that i should aim to be at 1200 cals by 3 months and more or less the same forever. Well. I was like at 400 cals at 3 months, and sub-800 by the time i got to goal. And now at 1800. So yeah, her caloric goal did not/does not fit my experience. Best to do some trial and error to find what combination of calories/food types/activity works for YOU. And keep adjusting as necessary. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S. Im 5’2” 119 lbs this morning, and 4 years post op sleeve.
  2. I often cringe when writing on this forum. Their for some will criticize me for my weight loss journey when some people ask why I got the surgery. Do to my size. I'm 5 foot small fram. Lower b.m.i. I have had great results. I lost really slow have reached my goals plus some. Healthier life style

    Did I eat too much?

It also sheds some light on the often poor results in regards to weight loss after revision surgery (exception seems to be band to bypass; these patients often seem to have good results).

And a little head to toe colour from me. Was attending a lunch for a charity of which a friend is a director. It supports families who have lost a child from gestational losses to children in their 20s. First gala lunch they’ve been able to hold in 2 years. Tickets sold out in 5 minutes so they had to have additional people in a second function room & also live steamed the event. They raised $91 000. So marvellous for a worthy cause.
  5. Thanks for the responses. I finally got blood work done, everything is normal. However, the response about protein made me think that there might be a conditioner with protein in it. Not only did I find this, but also a shampoo and cream, all with protein. My hair is not perfect, but it is better than a few months ago. Perhaps it will even get better when the hairs that are more newly sprouted finally grow longer.

Scared to go through with surgery

Hold off!! You will feel more energy. Your hair will grow, skin will feel good, best of all you will loose weight..
  7. I'm 2 years out I've had my ups and downs of weight loss. I've have worried daily in my success of weight loss. On how many calories, rite vitamins, exercise, list goes on. I may have been the lucky one or am I? I went thru the phase of regret not able to enjoy the food I once loved. But I loved loosing the weight. Slowly. Sex drive went down hill. Hair falling out skin crepping. " Blood levels are normal" . Started out with small weight loss goals. Reached my goals. Over and over again my goal weight was 125. I told my self I have to stick to a healthy weight for me . Not what the experts say I should weigh. Then it was a goal of 115. in my head I'm not satisfied I'll do another goal of 110. So I decided it's time to maintain my weight or gain 10 pounds back. Since I'm now 100 lbs. I'm trying to gain weight. And I'm struggling!! I want to gain. should I eat the three C's cake, cookies, ice cream? Of course not what are healthy fattening foods? The positives. Looking good feeling good.

Ditto to the other responses. I think you should contact your surgeon immediately. It isn't normal not to eat at all after 2 months. It is important to take your vitamins especially if you aren't getting it from food. Vitamin deficiencies can be nasty and affect you neurologically, also a multitude of horrible side effects like poor vision, skin bumps and hair loss problems, organ failure... Etc.

    Vitamins & Supplements?

Thank you for this comprehensive reply, very helpful! I agree - the chewable taste terrible, just so bad! I do use bone broth protein powder w/ collagen at least once a day, not sure if I will take additonal, but I am so worried about my hair falling out and am really nervous about my skin. I agree that checking in w/ medical team is probably best on this one! Thanks!

    Vitamins & Supplements?

Per my surgeon/team (when I was doing chewables) Bariatric Fusion brand I took 2 chewables in the morning, and two chewables in the evening. So then I would take 500 mg of calcium citrate around 11 am (two hours at least after the chewable multivitamins) Then I would take my round two of chewable vitamins after dinner. Then my last calcium citrate dose before bedtime. The only other supplement that I take daily is biotin (hair, skin, nails supplement) My surgeon prescribes one B12 injection monthly. Now I take Bariatric Choice multivitamin, it's a capsule. One capsule per day. I take it in the morning. My calcium supps are the same as immediately post op.
  12. My surgery date was 9/26 and my surgeon said not to take Vitamins until my post-op visit 3 weeks after surgery (this past Thursday). My surgeon recommended the fusion brand, but I am confused about the different types, some you have to take 4/day, others only once per day and then there are the calcium chews (two hours after iron). Is the Fusion 1x/day pill a complete Vitamin? I purchased the complete vitamin not realizing you need to take it 4x/day but would like to switch to the 1x/day version but just want to make sure it has the correct daily balance of vitamins, since 4x/day is just unreasonable and not workable into a work schedule and taking around Calcium pills which can't be taken within two hours of an Iron supplement and the gallstone pills (take 2x/day with food) and the reflux pills (take 1x/day before eating). I am wondering if the Fusion 1x/day vitamin is a complete vitamin and what other supplements does everyone take? In addition to the Fusion Multivitamin and 2x/day calcium citrate that we all take, I've been told (by friends) to take: B12 sublingual (when does one take this?) Fusion hair, Nails & Skin Vitamin D (50,000U/wk with vitamin K3) for skin Krill Oil collagen powder, Water soluble ADEK Vitamin (but the friend who told me this had a DS, which I did not have so I don't think I need this.) Does anyone take any of these supplements and what kind of daily multi-vitamins have worked best for you? Thanks!
  13. Edited to add: sorry, am realizing this post should probably be put in a more appropriate thread. But im too lazy to move it, ha! ———————— Yep. so the first time i got my body fat measures via scan, it was 38%. But this was already 3+ months in, and 70 lbs lost. So i would guess I was probably 50-55% body fat pre-wls given my body measurements at the time. Yikes. After weight loss, at around 1.5 years post, dexa clocked me at 15% (at 115 lbs) My most recent one was Jan of this year and i was at 23% (at 118 lbs that day) My home body scale, while varying wildly day to day, generally reflected these numbers when taken as an average over the time period. Sooooo, if i can count on the averages of my home scale, as of this morning, I’ve averaged 29% body fat reading for the past 30 days. I am 118.8 this morning. Now i still think calling me skinny fat is a stretch since technically im still in the healthy body fat percentage for my stats, i am definitely much less fit than i was before (I’ve basically doubled my body fat percentage over past 2+ years.) With all that said (which was alot, sorry!), i am content enough with my appearance and lifestyle that i have little interest in doing anything drastic to change it. I’m just not very keen on other people unsolicitedly pointing out their precieved deficiencies of my body. But i mean, who does??? P.S. btw, there ARE physical benefits of a higher body fat percentage: my face is less gaunt and my boobs are bigger. Win!

    Food log?

I use https://www.baritastic.com/ I used MFP for years and I didn't like how it was tailored for lower calorie intakes/wls patients. https://www.baritastic.com/ is geared solely towards weight loss surgery patients, so I feel like it's more user friendly for me.

    what surprised you?

I just had surgery last week, and just found this app… I was surprised how little pain I felt, but I was also surprised how tired I was post surgery. I actually slept from surgery until late afternoon the following day. But once I woke up I felt great, but I wear out quickly. My doctor said the weight loss will help me feel more energized.
  16. Hi, All - I recently relocated to Texas and do not know people here who have had DS. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in helping to support each other with daily check-ins, support, encouragement, tips, etc. If so, feel free to introduce yourself on this thread! I am 40 years old woman, single, and dealing with infertility (I am trying to freeze my eggs). I had DS 8.5 years ago and lost 50% of my excess body weight at the time but did not push myself to lose even more (I was in grad school and my mom was deemed terminally ill at the time). I would like to re-commit to healthy eating and working out and have been flying solo for about a month now. I am highly motivated to lose quickly (but safely!) to improve my chances with egg freezing/harvesting given that I'm also up against my biological clock! Hoping there might be some other people who want to join me!

    weight gain after DS

Hi, Everyone! I am a DS'er who had my surgery 8.5 years ago. I lost 50% of my excess body weight at the time but have lived in 5 different cities since (and may be moving again this summer!) and honestly was not able to really focus on my weight loss as much as I had hoped in light of all of the moves and a lot of life transitions (e.g., loss of both of my parents in my 30s, completing grad school, etc.) I have kept what I have lost off with minor regain and re-loss over the years (no more than 10 lbs) so have hovered around 215 lbs pretty consistently for 6 years. I decided to freeze my eggs since I still have not met that special someone, am 40 years old, and have had pcos since high school. Unfortunately, I am not responding well to the highest dose of follicle stimulating hormones the doctors are giving me. and they are expecting to be able to freeze only 2 eggs at most, which is even less than what they had originally anticipated based on my follicle count. The fertility team has suggested doing a medical weight loss program (injections like wegovy or mounjaro) to lose weight rapidly before doing another cycle as they have seen some patients respond much better to the meds after losing more weight. I'm certainly going to explore that avenue (there is one through the local hospital's bariatric surgery program) and i have also joined a bariatric surgery support group through the local hospital. i'm wondering if anyone here has considered injections after DS or if you have some advice for me for how to restart my weight loss as i've been trying to do so with just diet and exercise for almost a month now. i'm walking 45-90 mins a day and trying to eat a lot of protein. i've been eating minimal carbs -- just from fruits, veggies, and oatmeal but haven't been dropping weight. i assume my DS still works since i have still had foul smelling gas up until a month ago when i would eat stuff like sushi (the rice!) or a baguette at panera. Appreciate the advice! Highest Weight: 328 Weight at Surgery: 290 Current Weight: 215 Goal Weight: 140 (bmi of 25) but I would be thrilled to get to 165 (a bmi < 30)

    Awful doctor experience

I will agree with the others your options are to a) accept the surgeon's social awkwardness/rudeness if the other clinic members are supportive, or b) find a different surgeon/clinic. In your shoes I would probably look for another surgeon/clinic. I do want to point out that the RNY bypass surgery is generally accepted to be more effective than VSG. RNY results in greater weight loss, resolves heartburn/GERD, and resolves, improves, or prevents Diabetes 2. Some say VSG is a "more invasive" surgery, but frankly, removing 80% of your stomach is pretty damn invasive. With RNY bypass the stomach is separated but not removed. Both are performed laparoscopically. The VSG is easier and quicker for the surgeon. However, a lot of VSG patients have to have revision to RNY later.
  19. Due to my new insurance excluding all weight loss surgeries, I am looking for high quality/low(er) cost surgeries, Gastric Bypass or Mini Gastric Bypass. From what you have read, what is everyone's opinions on the differences between Mexico Bariatric Center and the Obesity Control Center? If you had to choose, or do your surgery over again, which would you pick? Thanks!

    Stall on loss

This. I fit this pattern to a T. I am 14 months out. I'm working out hard, tracking calories, and have dropped into the 4-5 bs a month range. The fast loss is only at the very beginning for most people, and will slow down. You will have stalls and it will be frustrating unless you are someone very lucky. This is a long game, not a quick fix by any means.

    Stall on loss

5-15 lbs per WEEK?!? For the first few MONTHS?!? That is a bold (and borderline irresponsible) statement for a publication to make. If I lost 15 lbs per week i would’ve been NEGATIVE 5 lbs in 4 months. Dust Particles. Anti-matter? Does anti-matter have negative mass??…i digress… I didn’t even hit an average of 5lbs per week (for first 4 months), and from reading on here i was one of the faster losers. Pro tip: manage (lower?) ur expectations and revel in your accomplishments. It will save you alot of angst. P.S. Congrats on the 20lb loss! That is no small feat in a month.

    Stall on loss

20lb in 1 month is amazing... Just keep at it. you will slow down in weight loss as you progress out. I am at 6 months and the previous month i only lost like 7lb and so far in two weeks i have lost 2lb... just keep working on it!
  23. I'm 4 weeks post op tomorrow and starting to feel a little discouraged. I can't do the puree so I start eating real foods . Just small portions small bites and chew chew chew . Which is working great and I finally have energy again . The problem is I have only lost 20 lbs since my surgery and I feel like I should have lost more by now. I am not able to get in the protien I k ow I need so I'm worried I am failing. Sent from my SM-G991B using BariatricPal mobile app

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

I am hoping (really hoping!) that you are just working out so much that you're gaining muscle to replace the fat lost. Have you measured to see if you've lost any inches? Re: PCOS, I had this. It was diagnosed by pelvic ultrasound by my Ob-Gyn. But that would not explain why you have stalled for so long after WLS. In fact, PCOS usually improves after WLS. Controversial, but I know some doctors that perform ESG (the procedure I had) will prescribe medications after the procedure. Maybe ask about that to jump-start the weight loss again? I am so sorry you are going through this. I can almost hear your stress coming through in your posts. I hope you get some resolution soon!
