Canned tuna is one of the ideal foods for WLS patients. It has 70 calories and 14 grams of Protein per serving, not to mention that it’s carb-free and full of omega-3 fatty acids. Plus, in a world where it can be tough to put together a nutritious meal because it takes too long, canned tuna is a perfect solution that can sit in your pantry for whenever you need it. But there is a potential drawback: it can get awfully boring if you have it plain day in, day out. Traditional mayo-laden tuna salad and fat and carb laden tuna noodle casserole are non-starters for WLS patients…so how do you prepare your tuna to be delicious and healthy? Share your recipes here, please! We could all use some tuna tips. If you’re not into tuna or your best protein recipe uses something else, please share that recipe, too! Whether it’s chicken breast, Beans, smoked mussels, Greek yogurt, or another healthy protein, we definitely want to hear how you make it even more delicious while keeping it healthy.

First puree meal, ricotta cheese bake
ella37 replied to ella37's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Full liquids are tough to get creative with, but I had a few good things. I got potato, bacon and cheddar low fat cream Soup and blended it until it was smooth and that was probably one of the best things I ate. I also got some Cinnabon flavored cream of wheat and made it with unsweetened almond milk. Cinnamon applesauce, sugar free pudding cups, greek yogurt, cream of chicken soup. It's not easy but it was a DEFINITE step up from clears. -
Did they use antibiotics at all during your ordeal at the hospital as a precaution to infection..some doctors do.....Antibiotics kill any bacteria in your bowels or system....so you have to replenish them......good bacteria by the way...lol Take some yogurt and cranberry juice for a while..it will help to clear it all up......

Question for those of you recently banded: Do any of you remember if Swiss Miss chocolate mix (that you mix with water) is allowed the first few days? I had some today (my third day) and I am wondering if that's alright. My first band doctor said it was and I can't get a hold of the nutritionist until Monday, so I thought I'd see what you all have to say here. Hello Mae, I was also banded by Doctor Ortiz on 7-29-05 and as for the chocolate I was told nothing but clear liquids. And on the Eight day I could add Yogurt. Did you have to pay the full price for getting rebanded? Hope this helps. Eddra -
What does is mean to "feel" a restriction?
the best me replied to fiveholts714's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I can "test" my restriction by eating a large spoonful of yogurt, not a tablespoon...but heaping, and I'll swallow it with very little squishing in my mouth. If I "feel" it kind of stop at the band before it goes down, I know I'm restricted. If it hurts, I'm too tight. If it just goes on down and I feel nothing, I'm too loose. Restriction has to do with how much pressure it takes your stomach to push the food past the band. If your stomach has to work so hard it pushes the food back up into the esophogus, it hurts! and it's not healthy. Eating shouldn't hurt. But good restriction will keep you not too hungry, able to make it to the next meal or healthy snack without grazing, and unable to eat tons at a sitting. I get a little burp during a meal, it's time to slow down and wrap it up. My meal is done! And I feel satisfied. Wow! -
I hate to be the poop of things here but I haven't been able to have ANYTHING for breakfast since I was banded in Aug. of 07. My Dr. says that some people just can't handle anything in the morning because we are so dehydrated from the night. I can't even get down a few sips of tea (let along a carnation instant breakfast, yogurt or cottage cheese). I wait a few hours and then have a protein drink handy to sip on. Usually by noon I can get down a yogurt. Sounds bad but it works. I'm almost at my goal.....and my Dr. says it's not really that uncommon. Good luck.

Please don't rush it. Would hate to see you get a leak. At 6 days you should still be on clear liquids or close to full liquids. Are you on mushies yet? If so, that is awfully quick. i would not even be having yogurt at 6 days, and certainly not a banana. Even when you get there, please watch the bananas, they are full of sugar. Iif you are drinking coffee, you should be drinking decaf because caffeine will dehydrate you especially at this stage. Right now please concentrate on liquids and protein. You do not want to get dehydrated. there is no reason to make your stomach ache or to be nauseated when you are this far out. It takes your stomach 12 weeks to heal. Please follow your doctors or NUT's instructions and don't vary from it. Your time will come sooner then you realize, but if you keep making yourself sick, he won't let you go to the next stage! Good luck!

Okay I woke up feeling great this morning. So I had my usual protein drink and coffee. Then water. Then fage 0% yogurt with peach and half banana pulverized in food processor, for lunch. More water.. Then some more broth. Oh I'm 6 days post surgery. Anyway I had the munches. Boredom not hungry. Then I put one of the little breaks tone cottage cheese pots with a little salsa on it and ran it thru food processor. More yogurt. And on and on. Then I began to feel bad. Gas pain returned. Stomach pain. Basically just feel yucky. Lordie I hope I haven't done any damage to my sleeve. Will definitely follow my instruction to the letter of the law,

Foods that aren't good after band.
Sharpie replied to Faded Design's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I still love good food.. hope that I never lose my interest in eating. I had pneumonia in Nov. and lost my sense of taste.. boy that was miserable.. loss of appetite completely is not healthy. I have changed my taste for crap food for sure. getting off of Sugar is the biggest change and I can tell if I do eat something sugary how my body reacts that it's not good for me. I eat better foods and healthier but I still love food. I cook more than I ever did before the band. My husband loves it but he needs to gain weight so It's good . I have always loved ice cream and still do but I know it's not good for me. I eat frozen yogurt yasso or skinny cow but in limited amounts. I doubt I could eat a hamburger and fries. I do love chic filet chicken tortilla Soup and Wendy's chili those are the only fast food items I will eat. but we are all different that is what makes the world go around. Eating less and healthy is the key to being successful with the band.. -
Protein Shakes & Smoothies
bambam replied to MrsGonk's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a little over a year out from my surgery and find I'm usually tight in the morning so this is my "Breakfast smoothie": 3 oz of pineapple juice 3 oz of milk 1 vanilla low-fat yogurt (I use Activia) 1/2 frozen banana 2-3 frozen strawberries (8 blueberries or so if I have them on hand) 1 scoop whey isolate Protein powder - vanilla I just mix it in my blender and it's great. It is about 280 calories and 28 grams of protein. That is pretty much my fruit and dairy for the day. For lunch and dinner I concentrate on getting in the remainder of my protein and try to get a little veggie in. HTH! -
I mix a pile of chocolate protein powder with my plain non fat yogurt and it is almost like chocolate pudding!, its a loaded protein deal for sure somewhere in the 50's. Kind of a slider so I dont do it very often but when the urge for chocolate hits you HAVE to do something!
-
I started to get the Greek yogurt with fruit... however I saw the crazy amount of sugar in it and chose not to go there. I use Stivia and other alternatives to sugar, try to keep the additives from SF/LC down as much as possible, so I feel like I'd be back tracking if I started adding things to my diet that have that kind of sugar count. Just me. Also, I don't know how true it is, but I read on one of the WL sites I frequent that any amount of protein over 30g at one time is excessive, and doesn't get absorbed. Just what that WL Dr. of Nutrition said. Haven't had a chance to check with my nut yet.
-
I also really like Chobani. I am in full liquid stage right now and I have a modified Chobani as my protein for breakfast. I add a couple tablespoons of vanilla protein powder, two teaspoons benefiber, Chobani 0% fat with fruit, 1 Tablespoon milk, some spendra and mix in a small tupperware with a stick blender. This makes the yoghert more liquidy (greek yogurt is thicker than reg.) and the fruit is minced. My favorite part of the full liquid diet. I would say it's about 25 grams protein.

Wow, it is amazing how different each doctor is with their after care. I am on a full liquid diet for the first 3 weeks (banded 9/12/05 the day before you) This is my menu until I go back for my 3 week check up - that is when I can move to mushies. Beverages: Skim or 1% milk Low sugar, decaffeinated, non-carbonated Fluid (crystal light, Fruit2o, etc) Low sugar, low fat, high Protein supplements (CIB, Protein shakes) Dairy products Low fat, light yogurt SF, FF pudding & custard Low fat cottage cheese (blended) Soup Low fat cream Soups thinned down with 1 cup low fat milk (strained of chunks or blended) Low fat broth Miscellaneous Plain hot cream of wheat or otameal (must be pourable consistancy) SF popsicle unsweetened applesauce SF Gelatin So far I haven't been hungry but I am getting in 3-4 CIB with Carb Countdown milk so that I keep up my protien. The rest of the day I'm sipping Water or popsicles. Good luck,

I was banded on Monday and have the tight pulling sensation at the port too..........when I stand up it feels like it is getting streched and it hurts..............does this mean it is healing up ..........sometimes it feels like something is being streched so hard it will fall out. I am on full liquids. So that includes yogurt w/no fruit, Soups, cream soups, Jello, pudding, popsicles...........that is about it. Made potatoe Soup and pureed it been eating yogurt for Breakfast and lunch and soup for dinner. I get gas with everything I eat or the burps..........weird, weird feelings in my stomach all week. I am still in pain. Not on pain meds but hard to sleep at night and move around during the day. I drove today but I plan to hold off on that tomorrow...........it hurt quite a bit. Also went grocery shopping and it exhausted me I had to cancel the other errands I was just to tired.......... So nice to hear other people are having some of the same issues. I thought I was just a being a wimp!!

Tuna Time! Share Your Protein Recipes Here!
Basicwitch replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm a big tuna fan, and get around the mayo issue by subbing in either greek yogurt (Fage 0%) or a bit of avocado. With the Nutribullet, it is easy to whip up a quick dressing to mix into the tuna. My husband doesn't really diet much, and he loves these like crazy. I'm bad with recipes, but here's a couple ideas...feel free to play with amounts to fit your preferences! For kimchi tuna salad: Quarter avocado 1 tsp gojuchang juice of half a lime One or two scallions depending on size or preference 1 tsp sherry vinegar 1 hunk fresh ginger Teeny splash (TEENY TINY) toasted sesame oil Blend those ingredients and mix into 2 cans tuna and 1 cup chopped kimchi (cabbage is best for this) and diced celery. Top with sesame seeds! Zaatar tuna salad: 1/2 cup greek yogurt (Fage 0%) 1 tsp EVOO Juice of 1 lemon (and zest if you're feeling zesty) 1 clove garlic 1 or 2 sprigs of dill 2 tbsp parsley 1 tbsp zaatar seasoning (more or less depending on how you like it) optional: a little zchug, a kind of hot pepper paste! Combine ingredients and blend. Toss with 2-3 cans tuna, 1 cup diced cucumber and 1/2 cup shredded carrot. You can top with a little bit of feta cheese! -
Help! It hurts when I eat! 3 months post op!
MTL replied to michey223's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Go to your surgeon, just to ensure you're fine/or not & be honest about your concerns/pain, etc. I still get spasms at 4 mos out & it helps that my nutritionist (one of 3 free ongoing monthly group support seminars offered by my surgeon) said, "Your stomach's the size of an egg, make a sunnyside up egg so you can see what you can hold. Eat slowly & chew like crazy, don't drink anything for 30 min before/after. Cut your food into sm bites, arrange the bites into the Alphabet, starting w 'A' & take a bite once you've made that letter. Then arrange the next bites into 'B' and so forth. Do this w every meal." I can only handle about 3 baby forks of regular foods & I still can't eat meats (they come right back up), but I can eat eggs, NF/SF: cheeses, cottage cheese & Greek yogurts, and fish (a few bites of each), in addition to the broths, popsicles, fudgesicles, creamsicles, puddings & jellos. I've eaten 2 bites of an English muffin, a slice of cooked bacon & 2 sausages (at separate times, w my egg). Since I tend to still inhale my food, I find that I'm my own worst enemy (self-sabotage) and I'm seeing a therapist to deal w my body dysmorphic & eating issues. I make myself shrimp fetticcine & eat 3 bites on a baby fork (also use a baby spoon). I'm a foodie & chef so I make everything fresh. I make soups/broths, but still can't eat French Onion, Chicken, Veggie, etc. soups (just made myself some, but will try again at 6 mos out). Going to get an avocado & hope I can eat a little bit. Sm victories like eating a few bites of an avocado, are so important. I'm still getting my 3 90 gms shakes in daily, because I'm learning to eat correctly & need the protein. I do get in at least 80 oz of liquids daily, aside from my shakes. As long as you check in w your surgeon/nutritionist to ensure you're doing everything correctly, don't worry about what you can't eat, but focus on what you can eat & be gently and loving to yourself at all times. I've been exercising since the day of surgery and if walking is good for you, do that & enjoy your own journey. I got a flu shot, came down w the flu, so haven't done much for almost a week but walk my dogs! When I feel well, I'll get my 2.5 ml walks in. Please forget about comparing yourself to anyone else on their own journeys: what I've learned is to just get support here on these forums as everyone else is following their own individual paths to health & wellness. Namaste. -
If you're going crazy, so am I - it's not constant, but I certainly seem to be a lot more sensitive to sewage smells post-op than I was before. Some other smells too: I had some rugrats over and for a week afterwards, I'd suddenly get a whiff of berry tube yogurt. My sister later told me one of the kids had spilled a little on a couch and she'd cleaned it up, which I'm sure she did, since I'm the only one in the entire family who keeps smelling it. I'm also pretty sure one of my perfumes has turned, though no one else thinks it has. So maybe it's just a sharper sense of smell?

3 years out from Sleeve. I feel like a failure.
summerseeker replied to sassyangies's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you look in the heading banner, find Forums and use the drop-down arrow. You will find 14 pages of Pre op diets. In the Uk we have different diets so my help would be unhelpful. I can say that by being on this forum for over a year, I have picked up some knowledge of the US diets. I believe the norm is 4 shakes, sugar free popsicles and maybe a fat free yogurt. This lasts about 2 weeks. With a bit of luck someone will chip in who actually did your pre op diet. Nobody on here will call you a failure, we are a kind bunch. Please give yourself some love. You have gone through so much and you didn't mention Covid. That alone made me pack on another 30+ pounds. I was doing the best I could, so did you. Don't be a stranger anymore. Hello, I just wanted to share my story. I was on a fb group through the weight center that did my surgery on 12/5 but they didn't let me share my story. I went in for my sleeve surgery but shortly after while in recovery my BP dropped really low, I started sweating badly and my skin/eyes turned gray. They gave me a blood transfusion which brought my BP back up. I was brought in for an emergency surgery because I was bleeding out. They said leaked 3 liters of blood and had multiple large dark blood clots in my stomach. I was bleeding and oozing through the staples so they double stitched me and cauterized some of the stomach. Since the 2 surgeries I have had very high pulse, which they call Tachycardia. Also, I am anemic. I also get this uncontrolled diaphram spasm where it makes me gasp for air. The 1st week it hurt to swallow anything, even a sip of water. I started to get pain up my throat so they gave me heartburn meds which helped that matter. I went home after spending a few nights at the hospital but quickly after I was home I went back into the ER for low BP and dehydration. I am home again now, monitoring my BP. I am taking fluids ok and getting my proteins in. I still have to drink slow but I am able to. You can feel/hear every sip go down and every pill go down. I still get times where there is pressure from air stuck under the rib cage and the pain goes up to my shoulder. They just ok'd me to start cream soups, yogurt and cottage cheese 2 days ago. I get full really fast. I just wanted you to know that the 1% they warn you about can happen. It happened to me and I cry myself to sleep about the events that happened every time I close my eyes. It was very scary to go through. They said it will take about 6 weeks for my body to rebuild its own blood back up. Your body rejects some of the transfusion since it isn't your blood. Until then I get weak, dizzy and lightheaded every time I get up to walk around and my pulse goes really high and my heart beats out of my chest. I have a couple of mins to walk or shower and then I need to lay back down to catch my bearings. I am starting to get color back in my lips on occasion. The most important thing is I keep fighting to get up every day, walk a little and drink my fluids in order to get better. They tell you that you need support at home and I live alone so I was worried. They are right, you can't do this alone. After the ER trip it helped to have my parents coming in to remind me to keep drinking and to do things around the house that I couldn't. Thank you for listening. sounds like I am right where I should be.. still uncomfortable, scraed to take much of anything and when I do it feels like it dosnt go down for hours. At times I get more of a back pain with this. I am also finding posioning difficult. Definately not comfortable if I take a few bites of yogurt then lay back to watch a little tv. Feel like I need to stay straight up and down
