    Day 4 since my surgery

This may be bad advice...but I ate the oikos zero yogurt, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles, and fell in love with fat free cottage cheese! Weird, I know, but it tasted amazing and went down easy. Hang in there!!! I'm 2 weeks post OP...we will have real food eventually, just less of it! 7 weeks post op and not hungry

90% of my hunger is "head hunger." I'm 2 weeks post OP and rarely feel true hunger (the stomach growling, aching hunger, the way hunger is SUPPOSED to feel when it is real). As far as protein, I'm getting plenty!!! I highly recommend a tasteless powder by "Genepro: next generation protein powder." The scoop is much smaller and you get a full 30 grams of protein. Plus it's less calories than most: 60 calories. I even put a scoop in my water, for real. I taste a hint of it but it is a clean, very mild taste. Add it to your broth if you're drinking that. You might try that. Powdered skim milk, peanut butter powder. Oikos zero Greek yogurt. All good options! Sent from my SM-G892U using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Well not quite but it certainly feels like it. I'm finally home from hospital after spending 5 nights there rather than the planned 3 - 4. Went in for surgery last Thursday. Removal of band, repair of hiatus hernia and revision to RNY. The surgery took about 3 hours and was apparently pretty standard. Came round in recovery , felt ok and was taken back to my ward. Still felt ok. No real pain or nausea which is always a bonus. Had my glass of ice to suck when I suddenly started to feel really strange. Hit the call button and when the nurse came in told him (or her can't remember now) that I thought they may need the crash cart. By this stage my monitors had started going crazy as my BP was dropping through the floor so the first Met call was placed. Most of the nurses from the floor came rushing into my room and I was convinced I was going to die. All I could think was no how stupid am I , why did I do this, what on earth will my Mum and kids and hubby etc say. They got me partially stabilised and I stopped feeling dizzy and then I started shivering like mad ( another sign of hypovolemic shock) . I kept telling the nurse I was cold which was hardly surprising since they had me mainly uncovered but she was trying to concentrate on getting a cathline in and it wasn't working as my veins had all collapsed. 2nd met call placed and a couple of ED docs came in as well. They were ultrasounding me to see if they could find some blood loss and my BP was down to 75/45 My surgeon was contacted ( I think he was still in surgery at this point) and it was arranged to take me back to theatre urgently. At some point I apparently had a CAT scan but I don't know when as by that time I was very groggy and I am sure my recollection of the true events is severely impaired.I have since heard that they went back in , looked for a leak , cleaned me up etc. I don't think they found anything significant but I don't know the full details. I recall waking up in ICU and thinking oh I'm still alive which was a relief but I still wasn't confident that things couldn't change. Friday sometime I was deemed fit enough to be transferred back to the normal ward. Again I was doing fine on clear liquids, had no pain and wasn't using my Fentanyl pump excessively but I definitely felt like I had been hit by a bus. Zero energy and like a washed out dishrag. That could be expected after major surgery except I am usually the one that is bouncing around the ward in record time amazing everyone. I felt so good after my hysterectomy that I kept getting out of bed to go somewere forgetting I had a pain pump attached! Physician ordered more blood tests to check my HB levels, apparently they were still really low even though I had been given 2 units of blood in the second surgery so Saturday evening I received another 2 units of blood. My temp spiked slightly whilst the first lot was going in but the on call Dr told them it was OK to continue. I was lying there think yep I'm not out of the woods yet and being anxious is probably not good for recovery. By Sunday I was getting a bit frustrated with food as I was still on clear fluids , I think the extended stay confused the hospital kitchens and the weekend staff.Especially as by this stage I had been told I had to do a NO 2 before I could go home and obviously that wasn't possible with what was in me. I refused to take the lactulose as last time it had me in agony for hours and wasn't going to go through that again. I did behave and take 2 doses of Movicol on consecutive days which eventually had the desired effect. I also find it annoying that as a bariatric patient the kitchen brings all your food for each meal in one go and then they don't look happy when they have to take melted jelly and sour yogurt back a couple of hours later! We won't talk about that yogurt it was vile, sour, unflavoured drinking yogurt, it wasn't even palatable when it was fresh. I finally started some Optifast yesterday and was hoping the protein would help boost my energy levels. Sadly it didn't. The best meal of the stay was some delicious cauliflower soup. On Sunday my Physician ordered a Physio check on me but when they tried to contact her she had already finished her shift!!!!@@@@###( Does make you wonder why you pay for a private hospital). Got to see her yesterday and she just checked on my breathing exercises, made sure I was walking ok and gave me tips for when I got to go home. My energy levels by then were still zero, if I managed to do the recommended walking it would wipe me out for the rest of the day. I have no idea how people walk off their gas pain so its a good job I didn't really have much. I climbed into bed to try and get some sleep and then realised I could hear voices under my pillow. Can you imagine the state of my mind by now? I concentrated on the voices and then realised it was my breathing, some of the worst wheezing you have ever heard. I called the nurse in and told her and I think she made a note but nothing else happened. They change shifts at 9.30 so it was probably 8pm ish when I raised it again and said how frustrated I was. Surely it wouldn't have been that hard to get someone to check on me. Maybe nurses dont know how to use stethoscopes, thats fine but there must have been some Drs in the hospital somewhere. Then the **** hit the fan as the person in the room adjacent to me had a seizure so they had an emergency situation to handle which meant they went home late which meant that despite their promises they didn't call and speak to a DR. I am sure if they had one would have telephonically ordered a blood test or an xray or told them to give me some salbutomol. I swear I slept for a max of an hour last night. It was so uncomfortable. I couldn't get into a position where I felt I could breath properly. The wheezing was loud enough to wake the dead and I had the sensation of popcorn popping in my throat! Half way through the night the nurse must have realised there was a problem as she came and put the O2 back on me. I was terrified. I even messaged my hubby in the early hours telling him I was scared and asking him to get there as soon as possible in the am so he could be there when the drs did their rounds. Dr this morning was lovely, he couldn't understand why someone hadn't called him. He decided it sounded like Asthma( which I haven't formerley been diagnosed with) so ordered me to be nebulised. It seemed to help so I have now been sent home with an inhaler and spacer. It still seems pretty bad when I lay down so may have to try and sleep sitting up for a few nights. I don't regret having had the surgery now it is behind me but had I known how close things were going to be I would definitely have thought about it a little bit harder. I thought that I had done my research and that the odds were good but maybe I was a little too blase.I will definitely only be having future surgery if I really have to and even then I shall be absolutely terrified. Hope I haven't bored you all with my long story and if anyone else got Asthma after surgery would love to hear from you.

    Real food

Omg I tried chicken salad at 3 weeks and it was a nightmare . Had to walk for 90 minutes because I felt like it was stuck and I was suffocating . I am 4 weeks out and can only do like 2 oz of fish . Tried to put ham in a scrambled egg this am and that didn’t work . I think meats r just way far in the future . Stick with eggs , fish, cottage cheese and yogurt . I rely on at least one protein drink a day

    Liquid amounts question ?

Here’s the answer I got back from my Nutritionist, Liquids go through your digestive tract faster compared to a smoothie (because a smoothie has other components like protein from the yogurt and fiber from the berries – and so the transit down your system is longer) which is why I recommended splitting the smoothie to ½-3/4 cup per meal rather than finishing the whole cup in 30 mins as this takes up volume. Maybe this will help others as well? Thanks for the responses!

How do I break this habit?

I saw the NUT today for my B12 shot and check up.. She did a metabolism breath test and recommended I eat more! First time I've ever heard that. I do track and measure everything and had been averaging between 1200-1400 cal a day. She said 2200 if I want to stop maintain and 1700 if I want to keep losing slowly. I'm going to aim for 1800 and start eating 2% yogurt and milk instead of fat free. That should help with feelings of fullness. My usual routine is: latte, yogurt, muesli, fruit, in the morning; cheese or tuna with veg and/or a slice of bread for lunch; soup packed with veg protein, beans, lentils, etc for dinner. Snacks: Annie's Crispy Bars, little bit of dark chocolate (my major splurge), Enlighten ice cream bar. I definitely get in all my protein and usually get in my fluids.

    Not that Interested in food

I get food cravings at times. It's manageable. I keep healthy options for sweet and salty foods on hand. (make sure they fit your plan) Sweet - fruit dipped in sugar free caramel/chocolate syrup. Dannon light n fit yogurt. Skinny girl raspberry vinaigrette on a chicken strawberry salad. Salty- Jerky, veggies dipped in hummus or chicken fajitas. Food may be a chore at first. Real and head hunger will return. Eat real whole foods to hit your protein goals. It will help you feel more satiated. As you progress you will be able to consume more food.(especially sleeves) Eating shakes and bars for meals is not sustainable long term. Keep them on hand for times your on the run and cant get a meal in. 3 days post op!

Wow! You're on purees already!? Thats great. I am 6 days out (1/15/19) and im on full-liquids (hot cereals, yogurt, protein shakes, etc) which started 5days post-op. I will start purees Day 10 (1/24/19) and I can not wait. I'll be so happy bec it will be easier to get more protein in. I also had a hiatial hernia repair, but the food plan stayed the same. Yes, the gas drops they gave me at the hospital works great. Although my program encouraged us to start some form of exercise as soon as discharge, I have been listening to how my body is responding. Ive been walking at Walmart, the grocery store and running errands and doing light home arm and leg lifts and that has been about the most I have been able to tolerate. When I returned home, I had to take an Oxcycodone. I will try walking on the treadmill, using the bike and arm aerobic machine at the gym 2moro. Everyone's regimen is diff, but listen to your body and your team. The most important thing is to keep regualr movement esp the first 2wks to prevent pulmonary embolisms. Even if that means walking back & forth to the bathroom 10xs consecutively or around your house for at least 10mins. Remember, your internal stitches and staple line has not fully healed yet and your organs are still a bit swollen. Regarding the scale moving, we were told that it may show that we've actually gained for the first 1-2 weeks bec of all the gas and internal swelling. As long as we follow all the medical recommendations, we will lose weight quickly. Many Blessings to you on this journey [emoji4]
  9. I am 5 days post-op sleeve. I was originally approved 1 year ago and cancelled surgery about 3xs for various reasons (fear, wanting lose weight on my own, timing at work, etc). Hwevr, I attended many free support group meetings facilitated by the program RD offered by my hospital so that I could get first hand knowledge and learn tips and strategies. This helped sooo much! The 1st couple of days in the hospital post-op was a little rough, but nothing unbearable. I also had a haitial hernia that I was unaware of that my surgeon repaired during the surgery, which Ive learned is very common for wls patients. Since coming home, I have had a lot of diarrhea, but Ive learned that many sugar-free things, including a couple of the bariatric vitamins have sugar alcohols (sorbital, sucralose, etc) that does not agree with my system. Im in the full-liquid stage til next week and today was the first day w/out diarrhea bec my RD said to start full-liquids and include hot cereals and yogurt (cream of wheat, grits, etc), which stopped it completely. I know im a post-op newbie but I have no regrets at all so far. Physically, my knees no longer hurt and I already have a diff kind of energy than before surgery that is a great feeling. I have no desire for sweets or fried foods or anything unhealthy. It may be bec im still sore and jst trying to get all of my basic proteins and fluids in, but I feel much better knowing that im finally on the other side of my wl journey [emoji4]

    Diarrhea

Yes, I am 5days post-op and had extreme diarrhea since coming home, except for today. I called my RD Friday and she told me to check the "sugar-free" liquids bec many contain sugar alcohols (sorbitol, sucralose, etc) which can promote it. My protein shakes are pea protein based and only have stevia, however it was also giving me loose stool. I also notices that my B-12 quick melts & calcium citrate soft chews have sugar alcohols. My RD suggested that i drink some Pedialyte and then advance to full liquids (hot cereal, cream of wheat/rice, grits) and non-dairy yogurt. Today (Sun), i only ate the Cream of Wheat, Cream of Rice and Grits made with high protein almond milk, non-dairy yogurt and drank water. I have had NO diarreha, but I also have NOT had a bowel movement at all today. Which, Im ok with for now, but I am about to try and drink a protein shake and hopefully my bowels will move w/out giving me diarrhea. I hope this helps a little. Straw

We tend to swallow a lot more air when using a straw. This explains it well, but do follow your doctor's guidelines: https://www.bariatriceating.com/2016/06/159477/ There is also this:https://www.ucsfhealth.org/education/recovering_from_bariatric_surgery/ Flatulence Everyone has gas in their digestive tract. Bariatric patients have a shortened bowel, which can cause gas to be more odorous and expelled more forcefully. Gas comes from two main sources: swallowed air and normal breakdown of certain foods by harmless bacteria that are naturally present in the large intestines. Foods high in carbohydrates cause gas; those high in fat and protein cause very little. The foods that are known to cause more gas are beans, vegetables, some fruits, soft drinks, whole grains, wheat, bran, cow's milk and cow's milk products, foods containing sorbitol and dietetic products. To help prevent flatulence: Eat your meals more slowly, chewing food thoroughly. Lactose intolerance is generally the culprit of gas. Discontinue eating all cow's milk products. Yogurt is OK. Avoid chewing gum and hard candy. Avoid drinking with a straw. Eliminate carbonated beverages. Remedies for flatulence include Lactobacillus acidophilus (a probiotic or "good bacteria" that aids digestion), natural chlorophyll and simethicone.
  16. Had my sleeve done in 1/15/19. Since the surgery nearly everything tastes terrible. The only things I can stomach is chicken broth and popsicles. My protein shakes, sf Jell-O, sf pudding, yogurt, cream of wheat, etc makes me nauseous. Does this pass? I’m afraid I’ll never get my protein count up. I’m using chicken bone broth so I’m getting some protein but nothing near my daily goal.
  17. Don’t be intimidated, the Korean supermarket is the best! Get the tiny drinkable yogurts! And the produce tends to be amazing. Get kimchi too.

    ❤ JANUARY 2019 CHALLENGE ❤

Update: Not featured: yogurt, chicken & chocolate chip cookies a friend made for me. (More tea, hot chocolate, coffee & water) The Cookies: they were not protein variety lol so *technically* I'm still on plan, but it's more about me not being a DB when visiting people who go out of their way with hospitality. I'll survive if I have a cookie, especially after walking 2 miles to see them.

  20. Liquids: Protein2O, Poweraide zero, Fatorade zero, Crystal light, Fairlife milk, sf jello, Tropical popsicles, cream of mushroom soup strained with added milk. 21. I loved plain Greek yogurt with Frank's hot sauce on it. I don't want it now but I ate the hell out of it post surgery. And fair life milk with flavorless protein powder.

What did you buy for liquid n soft food ?

I ate a ton of eggs. Puréed Soup and chicken salad. Refried Beans. Greek yogurt. Ricotta cheese.
  23. I was on liquid for 2 weeks after surgery - in addition to the premier protein shakes, I did Low fat Cream of Mushroom soup (strained) and sugar free Jello and pudding and low fat Greek yogurt! I have moved on to pureed now and have been doing a lot of pureed soup, mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs.
  24. Liquid: Premier protein, unjury powders, syntrax nectar powders (I like variety - and syntrax has some that are more fruity than chocolate, like lemonade and fuzzy navel - they have a trial pack you can buy). Milk (fairlife - more protein), greek yogurt (oikos triple 0 - would think out with milk. Note that some people aren't allowed yogurt on liquid phase) Pureed foods: I made a bunch of this stuff before and froze it: tomato soup, black beans (I just cooked, added some broth, and pureed), pureed sweet potatoes, pureed spinach. cottage cheese, yogurt, hummus, eggs (note, some folks dont do well with eggs at this stage), stuff to make eggface's ricotta bake (google it - ricotta, parm, mozzarella, pasta sauce, egg. I liked to add in some pureed spinach for flavor) Soft foods: tilapia, egg salad, zucchini, green beans, tuna (I tried tuna and it did not work for me, but it does for some. Good luck!
