Feeling like a failure (vent)
Teachamy replied to ria90's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The TMI part of your post made me think about Celiac (gluten intolerance). I was diagnosed 6 yrs. ago, and I NEVER EVER thought I would have it--I am a carb. addict, after all. Maybe the next time you are getting blood work done, you could ask them to check that for you too. It can cause weight gain/retention, for those of us "lucky" enough to have weight issues. -
Feeling ill since getting surgery in Feb 2021
Kukubari posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone, I want to warn people that this might be TMI and if you are uncomfortable with details and personal health, you may want to back out. So yeah, ever since I had my sleeve performed in February, I have had watery to loose stools and I always feel bloated or like I need to run to the bathroom soon. I get the 64 minimum water intake and my meals are almost completely protein. I physically am not to the point yet where I can have non-starchy veggies. I just dont have the ability to eat then PLUS the protein. My surgeon says everything looks good with my recovery during the past 3 post op visits. Has anyone else had these experience? Needless to say, this isn't something I expected when deciding to get surgery. It's not too big a deal, but it does make me uncomfortable and the sensations are distracting and inconvenient. So much so that my work performance is suffering from it. -
I actually had this happen this afternoon ... Inadequate hydration and a touch of diahrrea (sorry tmi, I know) so make sure you're hydrated!

Banded on Sept. 4, 2013
runt71 replied to amydlewis06's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on the third.... So just a few days ahead if you all. HANG ON. YOUR ALMOST AROUND THE CORNER. I have noticed I feel better yesterday n today than I have for a week. ( and I pooped today which really helped, TMI, I know) I have also had the issue of really feeling bloated and ugh after drinking more than a sip. See doc tomorrow and will let you know what he says. -
Hi, I'm Shanny, and new to the site. I got sleeved 5 days ago - at GBMC Hospital, Dr. Peter Liao, and I've been home for 2 1/2 days. So far it's strange as all get out. Between my stomach making all of these weird bubbling, gurggling sounds, and not being able to tell hunger from nausea pains, the choronic diarrhea, the indigestion pains if I take too big of a sip - I think I may just might think this procedure was worth it. I'm finally on full liquids. Thank God, if I had to drink broth one more day I think I might have had to take a hostage. This may be TMI, but I noticed as long as I was on Clear Liquids I kept having these watery stools. I couldn't even tell when I had to go. I would think I had to pee, and when I tried, I would end up with diarrhea. That's not a good look. I've been on full liquids since yesterday, and having yogurt, and cream based Soups, and Protein shakes hopefully are firming things up. I can't wait until next week when it's puree food. I want to put everything in the blender! Also, I think I just figured out when I'm hungry. It doesn't feel like a hunger pain, but more like a gas bubble. I weighed myself today and I've lost 8 pounds since the surgery. In total, since I started this journey that makes 22 pounds all together over the last 7 months. My goal is to lose another 75 pounds. After trying countless diets and being able to keep the weight off for a few months, I finally got tired of the rollercoaster and the feeling of failure. I researched the surgery for 5 years and finally decided on the sleeve. I'm a little nervous because I didn't tell people at work that I was having it done. They're going to know that i did something because I'm losing so much weight. I mean, over 7 months, it's not that noticeable, but I lost 8 pounds in 4 days. THat's pretty quick, ya know. I guess I'm embarrassed, or I don't want to answer a bunch of questions. I don't want to explain to my coworkers that I'm a survivor of an extremely abusive relationship, where my son's donor tried to kill me on a regular basis, and I thought by gaining almost 100 pounds, I'd make myself ugly and that way no one would want me and therefore no one could hurt me. 13 years and thousands of dollars in therapy later I'm not in that place anymore. I don't want to be invisible anymore. I don't know if the people I work with are ready for that, or if they can understand that. Hell, people in my family have been telling me that "you don't need that" regarding the surgery, or "that's not normal" well, being 5'1" and 247 pounds isn't normal either. I may not have "looked" like I needed to do something drastic but I did. If the majority of my family wasn't supportive, I don't know what I think my coworkers would say. My son and my girlfriend have been so supportive, though. My girl, (we've been together for 2 years) adores me no matter what size I am. She came to the hospital with me, slept in the hospital room next to me, got up in the middle of the night with me whenever the nurse came in the room and called them if I was moaning with pain. She's taken off work this week to take care of me. She's been blending and straining, and giving me meds and protein like a Nazi - but that's because she loves me and she wants me to be happy. She bought me swanky tennis shoes for exercising, and the Zumba Fitness DVDs for Valentines Day (that's what I asked for). I've never had support like this before, but I can tell you it makes me all warm and tingly inside. Okay, so I'm going to wrap this up. This is an introductory post, so it's long. I just want to know, how long did it take for you to be able to drink without sipping? For your stomach to stop gurggling and making loud noises? For your bowels to go back to normal? For you to start feeling "normal" again? I'm hoping most of this is because I'm just out of surgery - but I'm scared this may be how it is for the rest of my life. I look forward to meeting you all! Problems with bowel movements post-surgery?
DonRodolfo replied to akusah's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used to have a lot of issues pre surgery that seems to have been replaced by new (more tolerable) problems. I have somewhat frequent upper esophagus gas that causes a little discomfort. This is mostly in the morning. Burping helps a lot and my doctor says this should go away soon. (TMI ALERT) BMs are not the volume they used to be. Since I'm eating less I guess this can be expected. I get nicely formed logs (I'm told this is a good thing). However, I have to make sure to get enough Fiber (Metamucil twice a day) or it feels like I'm pushing out a tree - very difficult to get started and to keep pushing out. I imagine most of you know what happens if you push too hard so I'll spare you that. I wake up with A LOT of gas. I believe this is mostly because I'm still using a CPAP machine. Good thing is that I'm far enough out that I can trust farts. -
Can anyone tell me what happens if you have not been taking your B vits? Here's the deal I went to a vit store and I was explaining that I was about to run out of my zip melt dots and I needed to get some more b-12 supplements. He recommended some liquid drops that I thought was B-12 complex. Apparently not. Why I just did not go back to my original store and simply replace my dots, I don't know, Hind sight is always 20/20. Anywho I had been off the dots for a few weeks and then all of a sudden "TMI" alert, while me and hubby were in the midst of adult activities I heard a loud ringing. I mean it was so loud I asked him if he heard it. We stopped all activity immediately because something appearently was wrong. As I try to stand up and walk to the lavatory I was completely disoriented had no control. This has me freaked, hubby got me to do calming breaths for about 2 mins. The ringing finally went away but I got a really bad headache immediately afterwards. The next morning tried to walk around and was still super dizzy. Hubby left work to take me to pcp, I explained that I thought it could be me changing my B-12. All he seemed to have heard was really bad headache, he treated me for a migraine and sent me home no labwork done. The next day I had another "episode" the ringing came and then dizziness. Hubby says I actually fainted, I just remember him putting me in bed. After waking I started praying. I then got on-line and googled vit-b deficency. All my symptoms were there, it seemed like a match to me. So I asked hubby to pick up some vit B-complex. I started taking that same day I haven't had an "episode" since. I decided that I still needed to have some labs done so I called my surgeon and they agreed that I should come in. I went and did the bloodwork and the results should be in today sometime. I was just wondering if anyone else had any insight.

For Women...TMI...about Aunt Flo
KerryRNY04162015 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi ladies I have a tmi question. My surgery was April 16th. I could start birth control a month after surgery. About 2 weeks in after taking BC I started AF. The first day it was red/brown and today is day 2 and it's dark brown. I read it could be from rapid weight loss. I've lost 57 lbs. Have any of you experienced this ? Just curious. Thanks -
This gas has really been kicking my behind! I mean its the worst feeling ever but as I sat in this uncomfortable chair I noticed I couldn't stop rubbing my tummy. As I rubbed, I kept belching & farting (tmi but they don't stink lol) There's a huge sigh of relief so I would suggest everyone with gas problems to try relaxing in a recliner chair & just rub your belly with light pressure. If anyone else has any other remedies other than walking that have worked for you, please share

Almost 11 Months Out From Gastric Sleeve Surgery
ATLGirl posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All, I know I have been out of pocket for a little while. I needed to get away for a few months and refocus myself on why I did the surgery. I was becoming a very bitter person by comparing myself to others. Along the way on this weightloss journey become more about vanity and less about health. And that is so not me. I must say, I fall in love with myself a little more each day. I am embracing my newly found curves. Coming to an understaning with my stretch marks, and learning to love how much I can eat. I am almost 11 months out and as I read back over my old post, I can't help but to smile. How scared I was about never reaching ONEderland. My mourning over food. My worries that my husband would leave me if I got too small. And my fear about eating around others. Somethings that I have can now report on: 1- My goal was to get to 199 by Thanksgiving (I know I am a slow loser and paced my goals as such). I am happy to report I am 194. 2. I can eat a lot more around people. I don't know how my tummy knows, but I just can. 3. Food and calories are not the enemy. I honesty lose more when I anm not counting every calorie my mouth or keeping myself from slices of heaven. Its all about balance. 3. Still don't LOVE working out, but you gotta do what you gotta do. 4. I still don't take my Vitamins like I should (I am working on this). I take them 3-4 times a week and its mainly a multi (a good multi) 5. Carbs are not a sin. There are some good ones. 6. shakes are still NOT my friend. Every now and then in a pinch I will have one and I struggle to get them down every time. 7. My goal weight is just a number. I am actually looking to even out in about 20 more pounds. I am moving past the number and embracing how I feel. 8. Inches lost are just as important as weightloss. 9. But inches lost in the waist (pants size) don't correlate with weight. (I am a size 16 still after almost 90 pounds of fat being gone). 10. I still have a very hard time going to the bathroom (TMI?). I don't know what it is. I know if I went more, my weightloss would be better. But its a plus if I can go twice a week. Well that's it for me. I would love to hear from you all who have been with me for almost a year now. I am still hoping to reach my goal of 100 pounds lost by 1 year out. Its a goal, not the end all be all. Love ya lots! -
Maybe a subject that is TMI but one that I def need to discuss. I am 10 days post op, have had no problems having a BM on my own (without the daily milk of magnesia my MD recommends) just having liquid bowel movements (eww that sounds horrible), I am thinking that is because I am still on a liquid diet, but at what point is it considered diarrhea if every bowel movement you have is liquid? Maybe if it increases in frequency? Also I feel like I have had a couple of episodes of dumping syndrome, I ate broccoli cheddar Soup (well blended -- also I know not the healthiest selection but it was Thanksgiving and I wanted a soup that was actually tasty -- and my favorite) and immediatley after was hit with the very painful need to go to poop (which I did -- and then my soup was gone out the other exit) any thoughts on avoiding dumping? When do you resume normal poops!?! I need to know hahah

Post Op & It Feels Like My Stomach Is Growling?!
2bfit posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all! I had surgery on the 28th. I am having feelings of being "hungry". Like a growling in the stomach. Is this normal? It literally feels like I am starving like I would be when I had a normal size stomach. Then when I drink fluids it feels like pressure going down and then I burp a bit. Am I not sipping slow enough? I am trying to get my fluids in but the best seems to be the SF Popsicles and decaf flavored tea. As for the incision site I was having some pain but the hospital sent me home with an abdomen binder which really helps. I am taking the Loratab and am trying to stay on top of the pain. Also, I still haven't had a BM (I know TMI) but is this normal? I am passing gas. I can't believe I just posted that but I want to make sure I am on the right track! Other than that I am just hoping that I am doing this right. I hope you all have a happy new year! I will be ringing it in with chicken broth! -
Ok, this may seem like too much information, but I need to know if I'm the only one.... While on the two week preop liquid diet, I was in the bathroom at least once every 45-60 minutes to empty my bladder. I'm now 8 days post op, taking in 60+ ounces of fluids the same as before surgery, and I'm lucky to visit the bathroom 4 times a day. When I do go, it's not much. Is this normal with anyone else?

No butts about it
lisacaron replied to JustWatchMe's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@JustWatchMe OK now you make me rethink this again....I have had stomach and bowel issues my whole life. However..nothing created the roids until I had my first son. Pushing that little sucker out into the world created a bunch of little annoyances I have had for the last 26 years. Now I'm sure I didn't help by pushing and pushing and not breathing and then taking a deep breath after a push and sucking that little guy right back up instead of OUT. So a few years after I had my last son a Dr. asked me about this operation..and I said I'll think about it since they don't really bother me. Then a co-worker a few years after that had it done and I heard about the painful recovery and I said NOPE with my fat fanny no one is gonna care so why should I they don't bother me. OK well now that the fanny is not so "fat" even though it's still a biggin and it sits on my back I have a very tiny torso so it's all TnA (I know TMI) and now...those little buggers bug me. I recently told hubs I might do this after all...and now...yeah Ima rethinking that thought. -
UK-RNY , Sorry to hear about this experience , I had RNY and I take it you had the sleeve so i am unsure if this applies? at six weeks i was told to measure everything because the nerves in the pouch were severed and you cannot judge the sensation of fullness properly. As to your lack of regularity I have been adding a Fiber additive ( sugar-free orange Metamucil) to my vanilla flavored Protein shakes since day one and it keeps me on schedule like the trains (TMI so sorry ) I also tried tried Chinese take away about 3 months out . I had General Taos Tofu 3 or 4 small chunks and i was happy as a clam . Next day tried the same amount for lunch and it stuck like a car in rush hour traffic .. It was horrible , since then i have been unable to work up the nerve to try any again. I hope this is not permanent , I love Chinese food. Have a great day , RJ

I have found that I have a different reactions to pain medications now. Before surgery I could take medications with codeine in them with no side effects. When I went to Las Vegas I took 2 Tylenol w/ Cod # 3's and my. Stomach started spasming. Went to see my PCP and he thought that it was a generic formulation that gave me a side effect. So he prescribed Tylenol # 4. I took only 1 tablet. Well I had some pain so I ate 1/4th of a protein bar. Well within 10 to 20 minutes my stomach started spasming and my lower intestines started spasming too. I barely made it to the bathroom and sat down on the toilet then I passed out. My daughter helped me get up while I was vomiting and had a horrible diarrhea (sorry tmi) at the same time. I ended up dehydrated and weak the next day. I don't know what I'm going to do if I need pain meds. This. Is really scarcely. I hav e always had a strong stomach with no reactions to pain medications. So this is my new life. But it's still all worth it.

8 Days Out And Finally Starting To Feel Somewhat Normal
KK66 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Still very tired at times, but overall, feeling a drastic improvement from earlier this week. I found some new soups to jazz up the dietary repertoire and it;s helped (Trader Joes Tomato and Roasted Red Pepper soup and Miso soup). Weight has dropped 16 lbs since my first post op day. (had gained 10 lbs in fluid immediately post op). Total weight loss since beginning this journey around 18 lbs. I still find myself napping (which I never do except when sick), but I guess my body needs the sleep. Sleeping very well at night Lower plumbing back in working order. One per day (TMI--sorry!) but happy for the results. I return to work on the 17th and I have my annual holiday party here at my house next Saturday My BF has been amazingly supportive and helpful and thank God for friends who will help with the party planning. How is everyone else doing? -
We DTD a couple of days ago for the first time, although I was instructed to wait two weeks...oops. TMI but I just told hubby to be very gentle! My problem now is that I am not on any birth control and TMI AGAIN the flippin condom broke!! DH was FREAKING out and told me to go get plan B or something but I don't like the idea of that so...hopefully someone is looking out for me right now! (sorry for the information overshare, I just had to get it out!)

I'm going to call my Dr but they do not open for another 1 1/2 hours

Howdy Sleevers, Well today is day Five and I wanted to let you know what i'm able to do today and how I feel. I awoke this morning at 6:30 (normal time) I had my best nights sleep so far l. Still not comfortable sleeping on my sides but getting use to sleeping on my back. This was my first night without any pain medication throughout the whole night. I woke up feeling like I had been in an all day Ab class at LA Fitness but once I walked around that subsided. I think my parts shift a little in the night and when I stand they settle again. Took one dose of pain medication (this is a liquid they send you home with). Loaded dishwasher, fixed Breakfast for my boys and fixed school and work lunches. Took my longest shower (you know girls, the one where you shave, exfoliate, and condition the hair). Put full makeup on (I'm a Texas so that can take a while) and did my big Texas hair.....(blow dry and flat iron).. Took a walk outside around my backyard and proceeded to watch daily news and whatever morning show I could keep interested in. Had WonTon broth for lunch, I'm not doing well on the clear liquid Proteins... they are too sweet or too gritty. I was a gourmet food lover so the nasty taste of powdered Soups and over sweet drinks is not my style. Now if they had a Protein Soup that tasted like Lobster Bisque and a drink that had the flavor of a nice Cabernet I'd be totally on board. I did email my Nut to see if I could start reg. Protein shakes. I have to tell you... food is starting to look good (to many shows on morning TV with Food). Around 12:30 I felt the need for a nap (which I took) about 2:30 I woke up full of energy again. I'm getting close to wanting to bust out of the house. I don't stay cooped up well. My incisions are looking good today. I can really tell the swelling is going down. I'm also wearing regular fitted clothes with zipper and button with ease. I couldn't help but step on the scale today and I've lost all the weight I gained during surgery (8-10 lbs). I'm now 8 lbs down which includes one week liquid pre-op diet. I expect that number to change a lot in the next couple weeks. Last night I felt healthy and strong enough to cook my family their regular dinner with comfort. The standing feels good and helps pass gas. I did have my first BM (sound like my mother). It was very very lose almost watery like so if you feel a BIG fart coming on you may want to hit the bathroom and make sure your body is not having its first BM... (sorry if TMI) I've also (as you can tell) been able to work from home using laptop without feeling lightheaded. Well, as usual if I missed anything or you have questions please let me know and i'll be happy to answer best I can. Everyone have a wonderful weekend! Kim

Questions for post ops...
Shells_Almost_There replied to Only1likeme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As Bufflehead mentioned, there are a lot of different programs and plans - so what's outlawed by one doc might be perfectly fine for another. My surgeon's rules are very lenient compared to many I've seen mentioned on this site. In fact, I was given ibuprofen while still in the hospital, after my surgery! My doc has no issues with it at all. Concerning Protein, I am a very picky person and what some people say tastes good or great usually tastes terrible to me. I got a bunch of sample packs and finally found just 2 powders that I could stand. I also got the Premier Protein ready-to-drink ones from costco and those are saving my life. In fact, I have a bunch of powder and samples that I will never use because the Premier is all I need. I'm also at my 4th week post-op (tomorrow! time flies) and my recovery has been like clockwork. I had very little pain, no gas pains, haven't puked yet (but it's been close), and while I thought I'd lose my freakin' mind during the 2 weeks of liquids only after surgery, I did actually survive!!! LOL I haven't had any emotional issues, but it's early still for me. What I'm finding is that now that I'm allowed purees/mushies, I am eating more carbs. This is something I need to control. It's also a balancing act, because I am still struggling to get in 8 glasses (minimum) of Water per day - not because I have trouble drinking, but because I just forget or don't feel like drinking. On an empty stomach I can gulp water - it's very surprising. My next steps for week 4 and beyond are to track my water much closer, since the weight isn't magically falling off and I can tell I'm dehydrated. Plus, I will continue to use My Fitness Pal to track all foods, so that I can keep a watch on those carbs. Finally, I have been having a real issue with BMs. I will suddenly realize that it's been 2 days, and so then I drink a dose of Milk of Magnesia -- X number of hours later, I experience the pain of not being regular. It is really no fun. I am planning to get on a daily dose of some sort of OTC med for this, because I hate Milk of Magnesia!!! But, I hate constipation more. (There's just no such thing as TMI on this site, FYI ) I hope some of this helps. This surgery has been my best decision ever ( btw, less than 10 people are aware that I had surgery because it's my health and my decision and I don't want comments/feedback/scrutiny), and I wish I could have done this 10 years ago. Good luck to you! -
Questions for post ops...
Bufflehead replied to Only1likeme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone's answers to these questions will be a little different, we are individuals and our path after surgery is individual . . . but here are mine. Was controlling my emotions and eating hard the first three weeks? No, for the most part I wasn't overly emotional. I had to work hard to get my protein and liquids in (I was on full liquids for three weeks after surgery) but other than that it wasn't hard. I certainly wasn't interested in eating, craving food, etc. An ounce of fluid every fifteen minutes? My schedule wasn't that rigid. I had to get 64 ounces in every 24 hours, and it was a lot of sipping at first, but as long a I paced myself throughout the day, I didn't have to set a timer or anything. Protein: while you are on liquids and purees, you'll be having protein shakes. I would suggest getting a boatload of samples of different kinds of protein and then start testing them AFTER surgery. What you liked before, you may well not like after. Don't buy big tubs until you know what you like. My favorite brands are Unjury and Syntrax Matrix. Being "need ridden"? Not sure what you mean . . . I came home from the hospital and took care of myself, never felt particularly needy. Vitamins: I take Trader Joe's High Potency Chewable multi-vitamin (double dose), plus an iron supplement, B-12, vitamin D, and 1 calcium citrate petite. When I was on liquids, I took liquid vitamins from Wellesse. How long should you wait to have sex? It upsets the nurses if you do it in the hospital. Other than that, have sex when you feel ready! Constipation: I have had no constipation, I poop every day, sometimes twice. (there's no such thing as TMI on this forum, right?). Ibuprofen: I'm allowed Ibuprofen as long as it isn't a long term thing with high dosage, but I haven't taken any. I'm still working my way through the Tylenol I bought prior to surgery -- that is important, not to take Ibuprofen in the weeks leading up to surgery. I threw all the NSAIDS in my house out and replaced them with Tylenol because I was scared I would forget and mess up. Good luck to you!
