  1. Mine was a class with other people. Took about 90 minutes, went over pre-op diet, post surgery food stages, and long term diet. It was easygoing. The dietician asked if any of us felt we needed individualized help with diet planning and a few people asked for private sessions but I didn't. I am pretty knowledgeable about nutrition and understand the stages and such. I have another session right before surgery (if they ever get it scheduled) to go over the first few weeks of the diet. And then I have another class before we transition to soft foods... It seems this practice prefers classes for most of their nutrition info. Though I have the dietitian's email if I have any questions or need a private session, so that's nice. I have found most dietitians/nutritionists to be pretty business-like and a little abrupt in their manner, so your experience sounds pretty normal.

    Weight gain s/p bypass

    I had the same side effects listed above. It radically changed my tastebuds. But since my weight isn't from binging/overeating junk the med didn't cause weight loss. I took a pretty high dose of it for migraines for several years... I think you'd be better served by tracking your food and activity for a few weeks to see if your patterns have changed. Even a regular 300 calorie difference can result in steady weight gain. Also, some go on GLP 1 meds to help with regain but their side effect profile isn't exactly kind either... Dealing with regain can be very frustrating!! I hope you find a good solution... 💚

    Hi I am on day 5 and I have been wanting to just eat something I am not hungry at all but it’s so hard to drink around the clock to make sure to get everything in. I know it’s all worth it at the end and I am so grateful but it’s hard mentally and I have just wanted to scream so you’re not alone! People who I know who have had this always say these two weeks are the hardest! I know that there is a light and I will be able to eat normal food in no time! I started at 217 and I am 5’3 I am not 187.6 I was able to try on some clothes I had that have not fitted me in a while and that was motivating me to keep my head up it’s working! You can do this! It’s hard but it will be worth it in the end. Stay strong! Not everyone has the privilege of being in the looser club like us!! Good luck on your journey!
  5. I had my sleeve done in 2014. I had an endoscopy done last week. Doctor says I have a hiatal hernia, esophagitis and gastritis and recommends the Roux-en-Y procedure to repair and revise. I’m scared for that procedure for some reason. Is it common for the doctor to recommend revision & repair over just repairing the hernia? He said that it could come back larger so that’s why they don’t recommend just the hernia repair. Anyone heard this? I’m trying to make the best decision. Thank you! :)

    This last 50 pounds is the bane of my existence!!!

    I'm guessing it could be a stall, but when I do lose, it's soooo little and it takes soooo long. I can tell you this.....my body might like this weight, but I sure don't. There has to be a way to force my body past this point so I can lose the rest. No way do I want to stop 50 pounds away from my goal weight. No way, no how.

    6 month post surgery -

    Since we all started at different weights, heights, etc., I find comparisons to be best evaluated by percentage of body weight lost. At 6 months, I had lost 28.5% of my body weight. Now at 7 months and one week, I have now lost an additional 4%, for a total of 32.5% of my starting weight. Comparisons are a gauge but be careful when comparing yourself to others. We may all be vying for the same destination of better health and slimmer selves but our journey is uniquely our own with hills and valleys.
  8. Went on a cruise, wore shorts and dresses all week no chaffing, I went snorkeling and remembered how to swim, and walk everywhere with no issues.

    Hi!! I'm new to the group and looking forward to any and all information and/or tips anyone is willing to share. I had my consultation with my Dr July 11th, completed my visits,etc. Let me tell you all this, AETNA is not playing! My case was submitted for authorization on the 12th. Authorization was granted the 13th; less than 24hr turnaround. Color me shocked! I start my 2 week pre-op diet Monday and surgery is scheduled for the 30th. I put this off for YEARS. Always put others ahead of myself. Now? I honestly don't know how to act. So happy I found this group.

    Regular Diet

    Do you feel your restriction yet ? This is my account after the restriction. I did not get to real foods for 12 weeks and I really struggled with meat protein. Depending on what the food was - yogurt, I would not wait anything like a minute. I took tiny spoonful's. With other foods especially warm foods I would eat the few small bites I could and when the food was cold I would put my food away and come back to it later. I hated to eat food that had gone really cold waiting for me to eat. My surgery was in winter and I was frozen to my bones. A lot of the time my food went into the bin because I had eaten enough
  11. I cant say for everyone but I was not able to eat beyond my stomachs capacity. I did not try the slider foods. Still can not. When you are healed enough to get the full signal, about 6 - 8 weeks out, if you have one mouthful more it will sit in your chest like a brick. You will probably become very nauseous and will be unable to drink for hours till you have got rid of the extra food. It will be a very unpleasant feeling. There is no way that I can eat when I feel this way. As for worrying if it was the right decision ? yep I did. Its lots of money to take away from the family. It cost me over £12.000 so that would have been lots of holidays they would miss. It was a huge leap into the unknown for me. All I knew was at my age and size my heart was struggling with the most simple household tasks. Then they told me I was diabetic .... no brainer anymore. I booked a appointment with the surgeon the same week. Everything has failed for all of us before. Doctors now believe that Bariatric surgery is the only way to keep weight off. I am not at maintenance yet so can not say if its easy to do it but I know it takes work and regular monitoring. I am overjoyed that I was able to do this. I am a different woman now. TBH I feel blessed

    Regular Diet

    Sounds like you're doing just fine OP. I am almost 2 years post surgery. I have never set a timer to do anything (food or drink) but I know lots of us have benefited from that approach. I am a chugger and a gulper. I can see that this would not be good for lots of folks but it seems to have worked for me thus far. I eat what I think I'll be able to process (based on experience) and then stop. If I need more later then I will eat more. At 6 weeks I was desperately trying to meet my fluid and protein goals. Nothing else mattered. I didn't do it every day. I never timed bites - not sure that would have been in keeping with my long term goals.
  13. Oh my gracious, no wonder you were having a reaction with that dosage. Yikes! Nothing will stop the hair loss. It’s hair that would have fallen out anyway in your usual shedding cycle. That cycle is temporarily accelerated. (The acceleration can happen after any major surgery, pregnancy or other hormonal changes, stressful times, etc.) Your new hair is still growing just it’s usual rate. How much hair you lose is an individual thing just like when it starts & ends. There actually is no scientific e evidence that biotin stops or slows hair loss. All it may do is strengthen your new hair growth. The hair you shed is dead - can’t save that. Most people here say there hair loss lasts about 3 months +/- & that’s regardless of whether they take biotin or other supplements. So glad you’ve discovered the cause.
  14. I also live in Wisconsin and had my surgery almost 5 weeks ago. I've been freezing since I've had the surgery. I've been buying cute sweaters the past few weeks. I'm dreading once winter hits here. Stay warm friends

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

    I've found that I still can't really tolerate beef. Everything else that I've tried, I've had pretty good success with in moderation. The only thing that I've found I can take more than 3 bites of without feeling miserably full are Pringles, and I know I shouldn't be eating them, but it is what it is.

    5 weeks post op retching?

    @gabbieox7 I'm going through the exact same thing. At 3 weeks I couldn't eat/drink anything without getting sick. I went in and had a scan and everything looked normal, the doctor even had me get fluids. I'm not 4 weeks post op and still having the same issues. Some days are worse than others. The doctor did say it can be normal for sleeve patients. I just want to feel normal again.

    I’m also 10 days out and feeling better than I expected! Up and walking a few miles a day. I’m also tired like Shotputqueen said, some days more than others, but reminding myself I had major surgery basically a week ago and my body is still figuring out that the heck happened! Just one of my incision cites still hurts but I can adjust around it mostly. So far so good! Should get cleared to go to purée on Monday 🤞🏻
  18. If you don't find the info you want then here goes ... Slider foods are all the good stuff. Chocolate, ice-cream, cream cakes, biscuits, sweets and crisps. All high calorie and really easy to eat lots and lots of. If you ate these all day for a week then you will gain. For some reason these foods do not fill the stomach up. 50 grams of protein, meat, chicken, will fill me up but I managed to scoff a whole 100 gram, M&S cream and apple turnover and it did not touch the sides, had there been another, I might have been very tempted. I don't have bad stuff in the house normally but it happens
  19. I think this is a great idea! I have been considering starting an Instagram page myself. So far I have watched 11 minutes of your video, I'll finish the rest tomorrow. My suggestions are: 1.Play with your light source, it casts a shadow in the center-left (yours) on your face. Just turn your camera on and change the light(s) to see how others will see you. 2. Write yourself a script or an outline, just to help better organize your thoughts, you do say "right" a lot. 3. I think your background is great, but in case you change it, just remember people online will zoom in and scrutinize everything, so make sure nothing you want shared with the general public is in your background. 4. Do not let the music keep coming in and out. Either use it as just the intro and outro or you can additionally use it as a transition for a topic change. 5. You can if you want get into color theory and wear colors that make your skin tone and eyes pop, a ring light with RGB or light filter functions can aid with this too, but that can also be later down the road, when you start getting more traffic. Otherwise, I think you are off to a great start, you have a nice speaking voice, and a friendly demeanor, and your way of interacting/talking is like having a casual conversation with a friend and that comes across as relatable and friendly.

    Let's Talk About Maintenance

    Aah the how often to weigh debate. The responses seem to swing from very rarely/never to daily. I weighed every day for the first two years or so but now weigh 3 or 4 times a week. In the past if I thought I was putting on weight I wouldn’t go near the scales. If I didn’t see the number on the scales I could believe I wasn’t putting on weight even if my pants were very tight or bought the next size. So me weighing as I do now is about what I need to do to keep myself honest. I say you know you best & weigh yourself as you need to keep yourself motivated & on track. Has my hunger returned, yes. It did so slowly. Has it increased since it fully returned, no. There are still odd days or times I’m not all that hungry at all. (Wish that happened more often 😁.) I try to eat very much to a routine & not eat outside of that. If I think I’m hungry I consider if it’s real hunger or head hunger. Such as when did I last eat? Did I eat a smaller portion at my last meal? Is it almost time for a meal? How am I feeling - bored, sad, annoyed, stressed, etc. It can be an ‘interesting’ discussion I’m having with myself. 😁 This helps most of the time. I’m sorry about your injury @huskymama especially after achieving so much. But you didn’t have to go back to shakes to lose your weight just go back to how & what you were eating before your injury though smaller portions as you can’t be as active at the moment. Meet your fluids & protein goals. Eat your protein first then vegetables & last any carbs you’re allowed if you are able. Return to lower fats, carbs & sugar. Check with your dietician for ideas & guidance. Focus on upper body exercises because of your injury. Search for some exercises for those with limited mobility online. You can do this.

    Dumping more than eating

    I'm just shy of 2 weeks post op myself (still in puree), and I can relate. One of the things I tried to eat pureed was some oven fried chicken ground up and mixed with mayo (to make chicken salad). Good grief, did I feel like crap for the next 2 hours! I had a headache, was nauseated, and just ugh. I ended up laying down with an ice pack over my eyes for the hour and a half after I took some Tylenol and Compazine (anti-nausea). A lot of how you feel will just depend on what you eat, how much, and how fast. Your digestive is completely rearranged now, and your body just needs time to get used to the new set-up. You'll get there. Just be patient with yourself and your body. If you have questions, just ask your surgeon or your dietitian. I'm sure you can always leave a message to speak to them in between your regular post op check appointments (especially if they use myChart).
  23. @BlondePatriotinCDA, oh how I wish it was muscle! It's fat.... It's crappy diet and laziness - hence the reason I'm back to the forum for accountability. I haven't posted in about a year and funny that this was at the top of the rants and raves. Thank you for the response and personally for me, the reality check. I'm up about 5lbs (consistently over weeks), so I definitely know it's not hormones and I KNOW I have to get back to basics. So what do we do in these situations? Log in regularly, track what you eat (so you can't rationalize poor diet), and look at pictures of yourself when you were obese. I NEVER want to go back to painful joints, embarassing pictures, and not being able to buy clothing from pretty much anywhere I wanted (Oh, and I spent a fortune on new clothes so I don't want to go through that either!). Thanks to all here for being a sounding board and reminding me of WHY.
  24. The last pounds are the hardest to lose. A real b*tch. But could you be experiencing a stall. I recall you were prone to them with your sleeve. Also don’t forget your new set point. Could this be the weight your body is happiest at?? How long has it been since you lost anything? For those who are interested, Dr Matt Weiner posted a video about set point (metabolic thermostat) a couple of days ago. Others, like Dr John Pilcher, will likely have good videos too.
  25. What surgery have you had OP? I had a sleeve 23 months ago. Ballpark daily menu below for you. I was eating about two-thirds of this quantity at 8 months I think. Breakfast - I don't eat it but I do I have a large latte with whole milk. I like supper instead. Mid morning - 3oz greek yoghurt (or porridge made with whole milk) and fruit (3oz frozen berries or sometimes half a banana with honey); alternatively two eggs fried or scrambled or one with a couple of rashers of bacon. Lunch - chicken salad with about 2-3oz chicken and usually 2oz full fat coleslaw, with lettuce, tomato, cucumber etc. and a sprinkling of seeds All fits on a side plate (piled up, LOL). Or soup (I love soup with loads of veggies and lentils for protein) - can do a good cup of that. Or a small amount of sushi - about 3 large pieces or 5/6 small. Rice really fills me up and is good on hungry days because it takes my stomach forever to process it (probably doing untold internal damage, LOL). Dinner - my main meal - meat or fish 3oz approx - I can eat more of some meats than others; veg about 3oz; if I have space left then a tiny amount of carbs but usually not. Fish pie I love, with a tiny mashed potato layer. Stews are good - usually beef and veg in those (no potato). Fried chicken (I prefer thighs to breast). Wings with hot sauce - I can eat about 4 top or bottom wings. Curry - especially veggie curry with lentils and chickpeas (no rice). Steak (or pork steak) fried. I don't make pasta dishes any more really but I'll happily make a really meaty ragu with beef/pork mince and bacon lardons/pancetta and plenty of veg and just eat that on its own! Sausages (one large or two small) with onions and mushrooms. Fajita filling - chicken with onions mushrooms peppers sour cream guacamole cheese etc just no fajita. Sometimes a pie - chicken and ham - with just a top crust none on the bottom. Pizza or other takeaway food very occasionally - I can eat two slices of a large pizza nowadays. Supper - porridge and fruit; cheese and wholemeal crackers or oatcakes; a slice of wholemeal toast and something - e.g. half a banana, or sometimes pate or cream cheese or nut butter. Snacks - 2-3 a day - 1oz cheese; 1-2oz deli meat; 1oz raw nuts; olives; most days I have a small bag of crisps (chips to you lot). I drink wine at weekends - 1-2 glasses per night. Basically a bottle per weekend. I drink *far too much* diet soda all the time. I have almost no sugar in my diet now but sadly on the rare occasions I do eat any I still really love it and crave more - don't think that will ever leave me. Hope that helps - it's actually made me hungry just writing it 😂
