    i need help....

    I spent 2 nights in the hospital & when I got home I was 10 lbs heavier - I was totally dumbfounded!! Thank goodness for this website. After reading what others had posted about this weight gain I felt better & a week later it was off. Thank goodness!!

    Second thoughts

    I had the doubts as well when I realized the weight was coming off and the diet was not that bad. I knew I wouldn't have the will power to stick with it though. So many attempts in the pass and all failures with more weight gain in the end. My lifestyle hasn't changed one bit other than being more active and feeling so much better and I'm only 2 months out. I can't wait to see what the future will bring. Good luck to you.

    Slipped big time! How's everyone else doing?

    Ok, lets clarify a few things....I DONT do this on a dly basis. I eat what I know I can handle/tolerate. It was Easter, with family. I did not want to drink water while they ate. I DO understand what vomiting does, I've been an RN for 23 yrs. Your condescending attitude is what irritates me. The no weight gained, was a joke. Did you really think I was serious about that?? And lastly, if that's not judging....you & I have 2 diff meanings to that term.

    Sent home after 7 hours!

    Congrats on your surgery and new tool! I agree on waiting on weighing yourself! That water weight gain is serious lol. i have renpho. It connects to my phone via Bluetooth and keeps everything documented for me so I can go back and see what I weighed at week 2, 10 and so on. It also is a body mass analyzer so it tells me how much bone density, body fat and blah blah blah. It keeps track of my BMI as well. I have it set up so when I open the app, it shows me what my current weight is but also how much I’ve lost and how many BMI points I’ve lost. You can also do body measurements and keep track of them on there. I believe it’s called a renpho body smart scale and is on amazon for about $32.
  5. Part of the mental health evaluation of people seeking surgery is whether or not they have a rational and realistic view of what is possible In terms of weight loss with the bariatric surgery. Of course some people lie about that (health care professionals aren’t psychic after all). And the fact is that it is unlikely that people who have WLS will reach their full healthy weight, but will instead lose only a percentage of that (for many, 60%). That’s not my opinion, that is a scientific fact (ask any Bariatric surgeon or expert). When people have expectations that exceed that (and I have seen it many times on WLS boards, patients talking as if they are Joan of Arc determined to defy all odds), But it’s a real problem when people have unrealistic expectations as they can lead to significant disappointment, or depression, and sometimes weight gain. I don’t understand people thinking they’re surgeons are somehow it gets them, or have a low bar for them, or just know less than WLS patients. I have lost 100 pounds and kept it off for six years (and got a leg injury for the effort) and then regained the weight. I hope this surgery will give me a tool to keep it from happening. And if I get anything remotely close to being normal again I’m going take that and be thrilled beyond words.

    Pre-Op Confusion

    For sure! Thank you for the heavy pocket/ weights advice. I managed to weigh in at 199 after lunch, lol. We are waiting on results from stress test, then will put in for approval and get a surgery date for July. I need to weigh in no less than 198 and no greater than 200 (initial weigh in) lbs day of surgery which is really going to be tricky with two days of liquids prior to surgery. She said weigh every day and be very aware of weight gain and loss. They will not approve if you are above your first weigh in or if fall below 35. Where in Mexico are you having it done? i hope you have someone going with you. I have watched several youtube journeys of people who went to Mexico. They seem to have all had a good experience.     You'd be shocked how many people walk around with bands too tight for fear of gaining weight- yet are already gaining weight- then actually start losing weight again once they get a little fluid removed and can actually eat healthy foods again. The band being too tight is likely a big part of your weight gain. Best wishes to you.

    Yeah I would say that this is just water weight gain / not "fat" gain. no worries. I give you props for sticking to the liquid diet to a T! I wasn't able to !
  9. The feeling of having energy is more than your basal metabolic rate. I would venture to say as long as thyroid hormone is in normal range, low energy would not be a definite symptom your diet. This is assuming your BMR has slowed. After wls a lot of metabolic imbalances are corrected. Obesity goes hand and hand with inflammation, depression and insulin resistance. Wls and/or weight loss has been shown to improve these issues, so an increase in energy level and overall quality of life is expected. Remember also that if you stress your body too much you may get a burst of energy. In the short term stress can increase energy as a survival mechanism, but chronically this takes a toll. If you are eating very little, weight loss can slow down a lot. If you are exercising too much, weight loss can slow down. Sometimes you need to let your body recover to see the weight loss. If you are almost manic in energy you may having an acute physical stress response and that can stop weight loss. Think cortisol weight gain along with adrenaline energy. At 6 weeks after RNY I was at 252. I was 282 before pre op diet, and around 276 at the time of surgery. My doctors were fine with my loss, but it definitely has slowed down. The expectation was I loose about 15-20 in the first month and 10 pounds every month after. Also, watch portions and track your foods. I have to weight things to get accurate measurements. Alternate hard exercise days with easier days or rest days. Exercise works best when you allow recovery. Getting your diet right is the most important, but if you get too much physical activity on too little calories, it can really slow you down. You are still pretty early on, so your body might still be struggling to find a balance. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  10. Thank you all for great suggestions, reminders and a few firm kicks in the butt. Much needed! I am so glad to be a part of this wonderful support group! Combining all the suggestions and applying my logical Project Manager mind to it, I jotted down the sequence of events that led to this sudden onset of insanity. I just came back from, staying away from home for 4 weeks, 2 big family weddings and said no to almost ALL the food while I was there. I am proud of that! Being human, I think I had said "No" enough times in the last few weeks. My brain was rebelling! A few weeks outside my environment with EVERYONE pushing rich, yummy food at me was not easy! And I could not get my exercise. Exercise and the resulting soreness keeps me motivated and happy. Slipping into old habits is easy when the guard is down. I guess I was tired of saying NO! So, last evening, I gave myself this pep talk in front of the mirror (felt a little silly but how cares?) Pep talk begin: In the last week, I started to slip a little. Started testing the waters. NOT GOOD!! I over-indulge, weigh myself daily and find out that I had not gained. So, what do I do? Keep repeating the behavior thinking I am invincible! Until the weight gain actually occurs? Who am I kidding? I know it will come and come quickly, without the warning. The habits will be back before I can say “habit”. I cannot go back to thinking that I can fix it without taking drastic action! I WILL NOT be able to just stop eating!! When has that ever worked in the past? Create a plan. Revise it! Pep talk end. So, I created a plan. Organized the house. Threw away the Snacks. Passed a hard test: A boy from the neighborhood brought a cheesecake my husband had ordered from him while I was out. I threw it in the back of the freezer right away! I went to the gym this morning. I tried on my size 6 clothes and let myself feel the wonderful feeling. I drank 120 oz of Water and am chugging away today! I looked at my before and after pictures and I tried to remember all the wonderful compliments and attention I got at the weddings! Here is what I learnt from this small slip up: - I will not be cured! I am an addict and always need to have a plan. - Desperate times call for desperate measures! Get help quickly! Do not think you can do it by having the same thinking that you had before the surgery. Your tummy was cut, not your brain! It stills thinks the same way! - I did not have this big surgery to fail. I will adjust my habits and create as many plans I have to and be successful! For those here that posted about going through the same thing, create a list of things you can make better today and then act on it. DON'T WAIT! Thank you all!

    Al Roker & Carnie Wilson????

    Looks like noone hasnt posted to this thread for a long time, but I have noticed that Al has gained his weight back as well, I dont watch TV very often so I am a little slow lol... anywho, I am almost 4 years post op gastric bypass and lost all of my weight in the first year, from 260 to 155, I now fluctuate in between 140 1nd 150. I have not had any weight gain issues, however, my surgery has not been without its major health issues, the first year I almost died due to a strangulated intestinal hernia, in which the FDA finally approved 4 months later that surgeons were able to correct this problem during surgery for this to no longer happen, after several people dieing from it in a 5 year period, thank god I wasnt one of them and its a shame so many had to die from it till they fixed it!!!.. then 6 months later another surgery from the inside incision not closing up all the way... an incisional hernia repair... since then nothing until this year when i got extremely fatigued and could barely even get out of bed due to severe anemia and B12 deficiency... so it is not without its faults, not I have to get B12 injections 1 time a month for the rest of my life and, and have had to go in for 8 iron infusions. I have been to every kind of Dr you can think of Hematologists, rheumatologists, neurologists, because I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and have severe back issues that I thought would clear up after my weight loss but not.. oh well... would I do it again, I believe so... would I recommend to others, probably but not without letting them know that it is not a cakewalk... So I think it just depends on the person as far as whether or not they gain the weight back, I eat whatever I want, I actually dont eat that healthy at all... i still cant eat large amounts of food, if i do i throw up... still cannot consume more than 10 grams of sugar at once or I will get very very ill... anyways I could go on and on but just wanted to post this for others to read...     It really doesn't matter what WLS you have, if you don't change your attitude about food and your eating habits, you may be able to lose in the beginning but you will not keep it off. I've seen this in my own family. My sister had bypass about 8 years ago. She's since had 3 kids. She's doing great! Her DH had the surgery after she did. He lost a lot of weight. Then started eating til he puked, then went back for more. Disgusting. AND he's gained most of his weight, if not all, back. My mom had bypass about 5 years ago. At the age of 61, her chiropractor says she's working out too much at the gym at an average of 12hrs a week! She just did her first bike race in August. She and her boyfriend are heading out this weekend for a hike they signed up for. She's back to horseback riding, which she hadn't done in well over 40 years!! Between the 3 of them, the difference in attitude is huge. Mom and sis knew they had to make changes in order to make their surgeries work for the rest of their lives. Sis's DH expected the surgery to do all of the work and now blames the surgery for his weight gain. (Of course, that's how he is in real life anyway, never his fault, it's always someone else!) I've also been on this site for awhile now and have seen the stories of people not losing and/or gaining and come to find out, they're eating too much, have no restriction or are eating a lot of garbage. Now there are truly people on this site struggling and I'm NOT talking about them. I'm talking about the ones who aren't using their tools and then wonder why things aren't working for them. So, like I said, a really long time ago (above!), it's all about changing your attitude and how you look at food. Doesn't matter what WLS you have.

    What is happening?!?!

    Seventeen lbs in a week this far along does sound odd. Like @sillykitty weighing myself regularly is a good motivator for me too. I weigh myself almost everyday and allow for fluctuations - unexpected change of diet, water retention, constipation (lol). (Hormones aren’t an issue for me anymore but they were a b*tch for unexplained weight gain/loss.) A lot of people take regular body measurements as well & have found the measurements will change even if the scales don’t. Also keep your scales in the exact same spot. Electronic scales are sensitive to uneven floors (tiles are the worst).

    How did everyone do at Thanksgiving?

    I had a really enjoyable Thanksgiving, but thank goodness its over....at least the food part! I didn't do nearly as bad this year as years past but I still ate more than I should have and had a 2 lb weight gain....OVERNIGHT!! I'm sure that it will fall off in a couple of days though, I'm not terribly concerned about it. I didn't even attempt the turkey cuz turkey is usually a bit dry even for the un-banded so unfortuantely everything I did eat was of the soft, slider-type foods. What was weird about the the whole day was I checked out everyones plates to see how mine measured up (they are all "normal" size people, I'm the only overweight one in the entire family) and their servings were HUGE,,,,much like mine used to be. That made me feel good that my servings were so much smaller than the "normals". Hope everyone had a great day!!
  15. Ok, I just read something.... I am Day 11 pre-op diet and yes I am loosing weight. I read that some people gain weight from the actual Lap Band at time of surgery. It seems to be significant. I am wondering if this mainly extra "gas" weight or bloating from surgery and/or the band. Does anyone know something about post-op weight. I know we shouldn't jump on the scale right away. I am just curious as to what to expect.

It’s written and performed by Kenny Chesney, and for a long time I couldn’t hear it without crying; sometimes, I still can’t. I know it’s about alcoholism, but it’s also about me and my eating disorder. So many times, I thought, “I got this. I’m in control. I’m NOT an addict. I’m not ill.” Then there was the time when I lost 71 lbs. on Weight Watchers, and I was convinced that I was “fixed.” I was cured. I wasn’t “that” person anymore, and I was never going back; ever…but, I did. The devil definitely took my hand and I thought, “Just this once.” “Just this once” led to a downhill slide and a massive weight gain. I spent years beating myself up over that. I could not believe that after all that hard work that I blew it, like that. And then, my darkest days began. I felt as though my eating was so much bigger than me. It was something separate from me, that I couldn’t control. I hated life. Every day was a struggle of when do I eat/how much do I get to eat/when will I get to eat again/ what is there to eat? Worst of all, I knew that if I ever did get it together, that it wouldn’t stay together. And I hated everyone; but no one as much as myself...I really hated me. I think that everyone has to have their “moment of truth.” Mine came for me at 3:00 in the morning, watching a show on WLS. I remember thinking, “Life doesn’t have to be this hard.” I pretty much decided right then, that I was going to do this thing. You know, I would have NEVER thought that anything positive could have came from that 71 lb. weight gain, but I was wrong; several positive life lessons came from that. I learned that just when you think you’ve got your demon under control, and you get so high and mighty and complacent that it will rear its ugly head and kick your ass. I learned what to look out for, and what foods that I can’t handle; foods that are “triggers” for overeating. I learned that I am WAY stronger than I ever imagined. Lastly, I learned that the weight loss is secondary for me. The main thing is that I’m free. I’m free from the prison known as my eating disorder. And life is good. Life is very good.

    Progress or the lack of

    Hey guys just wanted to check in. I know I have not been on very much. I've been dealing with weight gain and loss it's been up and down a lot, I know the holidays don't help but any thoughts would be helpful I've been up to 230 then down to 221 . I believe it was now back up to 226 as of today that's been up and down and I'm just not sure what's going on. I did have gallbladder surgery recently, learning that red meats not my friend.     Doubts about sleeve option

    I’m five years out with the sleeve. I’m maintaining in the 130’s. I bounced back from surgery and had no complications. For me it was a great choice. This site is mainly people researching, are new and in weight loss phase, had weight gain or complications. Understand that many people that are maintaining no longer need support on this site. There is no way for me to avoid offending the people on this site that have had regain. What I am saying is not judging them. Have compassion. There are reasons why people regain (medical issues, complications, eating disorders, pregnancy and not following plan. - Anyone who has stretched their surgery needs it diagnosed and therapy to control overeating. I would hate to see anyone stretch a second surgery. If they need a restart, I hope the second one works for them. Bottom line, the only reason any of us gain weight is eating over calories and macros.
  19. I too wonder what my maintenance calories are because never in my life have I reached that stage. I am quite short so any sort of weight gain is always apparent , so dont really wanna gain 10 pounds extra down the line when Ive reached my weight goal....

  21. Your shoulder pain will eventually pass. I was miserable for about 3 days after my surgery. I too wanted to over do it. But rest, get plenty to drink, and don't worry about weight gain. You just had major surgery and this is the healing process. Check with your doc for pain meds if the pain is too much. A heating pad helps with the shoulder pain. Also do a search of old threads on here, there is lots of useful info. Best of luck!
  22. One area that I think many doctors don't do a good job of explaining is that there are two kinds of hunger. True physical hunger it's been 5 + hours since your last meal, you stomach is rumbling huger. The second kind is head hunger. It's been 3 hours since lunch, I'm bored, my boss is a pain in the $#%@%$, and I wish I was anywhere but here hunger. If you don't feel full, it has been a couple hours since lunch, you feel justified buying those Cookies from the vending machine. My doctor had 3 required group sessions with a pychologist where we dicussed physical/emotional/food triggers that led us to eat when we were'nt really hungry. Due to other health issues my journey from first consult to surgery was longer then most 7.5 months. My insurance did not have a required 6 months diet but I put those months to good use. I lost 50 pounds. I did a lot of work on my food choices. I also put those mindfull eating sessions to good use. I studied friends and family who are thin. How fast do they eat, what are their food choices, what are their exercise habits. There was medical journal article recently that showed in families where males are alcoholics the woman are more likely to be obese. I was like were they studying my family and did'nt tell me! My brother is a recovering alcoholic and I am a food addict, this is the pattern in on my maternal side. Willpower oh willpower! There are many people on this site who post that they get "restriction" (where they eat a bandster sized meal 1-1/2 cups of food, feel satiation/fullness, and can go 4-5 hours before they need to eat), after say 5CC's of fill. There are however several of us who don't feel full from smaller portions until 9+ CC's. Here's where the willpower comes in. You measure out your food; and when it's gone you are done eating. Stong likelihood you will not feel full. But you have to stop eating. That's where will power comes in. My doctor does'nt not want snacking between meals. So you've had a very small meal and it 4-5 hour before you can eat again. Enter "Bandster Hell". Here is also where frustration can set in. After months of preparing for surgery there is a huge let down where you are hungry after meals and you may not be losing weight very fast. I am pretty very conservative about my food choices, count calories, exercise an hour daily; and I am losing at average 1 lb per week. Perhaps now that I am at restriction I will lose at a quicker rate. The ever allusive full feeling. At 10.00 CCs after eating (again stopped when my measured food ran out) I felt a satiation, not full just not hungry. After about 5-10 minutes I would get a full sensation. I could go 3-3:30 hours before feeling hungry and would grit it out for 4 hours. Now at 10.6 ccs I do get a much stronger satiation closer to full feeling as I'm eating. My nurse said to eat until I feel like I can't eat another bite. I don't do that because I have never had vomiting or slim/Productive Burp and I don't care to. After eating I get a full feeling and don't feel hungry for 4-5 hours depending oh what I have eaten. Here's what I think the band does for me at this point. Head hunger. It's been 3 hours since lunch and I'm bored. I get food thoughts, I ask myself are you really hungry enough to eat? Really? Or are you bored? I consult my stomach (don't laugh) and it says' "No, not really hungry". This allows the logical side of my brain to will the battle. On diets preband I always eventually give up. While I do not make "treat" foods part of my normal diet; if I am at a party after I've eaten my Protein and some veggies I allow myself a small amount of diet unfriendly foods. Before banding it did'nt matter how much I had already eaten I always had room for as much high fat/calories food as I could my hands on. Now I don't feel hungry enough to keep eating serving after serving. I think it boils down to do you think you can stay on weight watchers for ever? If so do that. My problem is when I've gone on very strict diets (and 3 times in my life preband I lost over 100 pounds) eventually I just can't take it anymore. I start to let in high cal/fat foods and it snow balls and I don't eat them occationally or in small portions; I eat them all day everyday and in large portions. If you can't make food habits a life long commitment they eventually will stop and you will go back to unhealthy ones that will lead to weight gain.
  23. I had my gastric sleeve in 2011 and lost 120 pounds but now Im gaining it back. Does anybody know if I can restart the beginning phase of the diet to fix this?
  24. I understand that weight gain and loss (beyond the usual 10-15 pound swings most people experience) is based on insulin resistance rather than total calorie consumption. However, even with diets that are not based entirely on cutting calories--like Keto and Atkins--still place limits on total consumption and advocate weight food so you can track your macros. Ultimately, the idea is that the fat and protein that makes up 90% of your consumption on these diets will be more satiating, so you end up eating less because you have less cravings and hunger. Regardless of how the goal is achieved, one of the goals is a reduction or moderation in total caloric intake for someone that has weight they need to lose. Keto, in particular, focuses on insulin control, but by adding in intermittent fasting (which most strict keto people incorporate at some point), you're definitely cutting calories by limiting the window for eating. You're not strictly counting calories like you would on a diet like weight watchers (probably one of the worst diets out there IMO), but the calories are cut anyway (it's just a less painful process in my experience). Anyway, I am happy with following a keto style diet (constipation notwithstanding). It's something I can do long term, but I can't follow a therapeutic style keto with a 4:1 fat to protein ration or anything close that as a new sleever (6 weeks post-op). Based on my workout regimen, I need to get around 125-150g or protein in a day (even with the protein/muscle sparing qualities of Keto) and there's a limit to how much else I can eat (even with calorie dense fats like avocado). I also don't want to deviate too far from my doctor's prescribed diet at this point, so I doing a 1:1 fat to protein diet (sticking to clean, high quality fats and proteins) and I cut carbs to less than 20g net carbs. I pretty happy with this and it sets enough ground rules that I can easily decide what I can eat and how much of it---even when I am out a restaurant.
  25. Surgery 03/27/12,and I must say that my post op course has been pretty uncomplicated. I've lost 30 lbs,with what appears to be a 3 lb weight gain over the past two weeks. I've been so hungry and it's taken all the self restraint I could muster to control myself. First fill yesterday morning bringing my total to 4.6ml......Very simple process,and totally painless. Liquids yesterday without any problems,and I just had a cup of crab chowder(pureed) and I feel completely full. Very optomistic!
