Don’t be down on yourself! Millions of people eat loaded mashed potatoes without becoming obese. Hell, if we all stuck to just 4 tablespoons of “bad” food we would all be fine. There are many approaches to weight loss post wls. Some have a long list of nevers that cause anxiety and steal joy. I would never have done the surgery if I thought that I couldn’t have 3 tablespoons of our families traditional potato gratin ever again. In the past it would have piled high on my enormous plate and I would have eaten it over and over that way until it was all gone. Every Christmas I did this! There’s a big difference! I knew that I would fail if I went into this surgery thinking that I would never get to enjoy food again. I have this tool and education to keep me healthy. I can’t eat a ton even if I want to. That’s a win. I will only enjoy after protein goals are met. Won’t be much room for that indulgence but I will have it here and there. I will no longer stress eat boxes of little Debbie’s in my car, I will now enjoy every small 3 to 4 bites of my children’s birthday cakes on their special days. I was already enjoying the 1200 calorie diet I was on preop minus the hunger, as I focused 95 percent on healthy proteins, beautiful vegetables, gourmet cheeses and nuts in super small portions, the deliciousness of a tart apple., all of the right foods while spending maybe 5 percent having a bite of the cupcake my daughter baked, etc. I myself will have long lasting success focusing on good quality real food with the help of a restriction to remind me when I am overindulging in even the right foods with occasional treats of very small proportions. I wouldn’t have done this any other way.

You CAN do it and you WILL do it! I spent about 4 years in the prep stage, including the year for COVID and 2 years for recovery from a badly injured leg and a switch in programs (read: Surgeon). I thought it was NEVER going to happen. All that said, I started at around 320 lbs and was down to 254 before surgery on 04/24/23. I just kept the mindset that I would be damned if they used me slacking off in the loss department as an excuse to put off the surgery one. more. time. My incentive was arthritis and fibromyalgia all over my body. Oh. And an ankle that wouldn't heal properly for 2 years - to include a large danger of losing the foot. Any weight I could get off was weight that wasn't pulling on my body. You just have to decide what your health is worth to you. Oh yeah - please don't make the same mistake I did and purchase tons of various products to eat, drink and, whatever, in anticiaption of surgery. I threw out a couple of hundreds of dollars worth of product that I found I had absolutely no interest in consuming. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!
  3. As the weight is coming off, I’ve heard that compression garments can help guard against gravity. I’m losing a fair amount in my breasts, and I’m worried they’ll start sagging 😱 I know it won’t prevent loose skin entirely, but will a binder help with my breasts? Any suggestions for compression garments for upper and lower body? I’ve looked online for undergarments, but most of the things I’ve found are used for slimming under dresses and such. They didn’t *seem* like they’d word here but maybe? Any ideas welcome!

Hi @LibrarianErin! Yes!! I’m still adjusting my mind but I will admit it feels so hard when those around me offer me food or forget I’m on the diet. Because my first thought is “wow that looks so good” not “I can’t eat that”. Also, thank you for creating this forum! It has allowed me to gain more insight about the journey of others as well as learning a few new things on here! I agree, the criticism is often them just thinking I’m lazy, taking the “easy” way out or not eating right or whichever reason, but I have tried all reasons to lose the weight naturally and also on medication and well, nothing worked.. As I mentioned in another reply I wish I was more tight lipped about the surgery to prevent all this negativity towards my surgery. I sincerely believe the surgery is going to help me change my eating habits and start a new path of healthy choices! Hope all is well with you!

Same here! I only told certain people only when it was necessary but it somewhat spread through friends and family. I now wish I did the same as you and just kept it to a minimum or refuse to expand further as now they all believe to be weight loss experts and chime in with their unwanted opinions, and it’s a bit frustrating.. I have always felt like the fat friend as well and it has really killed my social life mostly due to embarrassment about the way I look and feel like I take a ton of space for those around me you know? Hopefully this lifestyle change will improve our confidence and change our way of life for the better! Good luck on your journey!

Respectfully, and with no malice whatsoever, suggesting a therapist for auxiliary support is NOT bashing, in any way, shape, or form. ❤️ ESPECIALLY in THIS forum. Alot of us recognize (or eventually come to recognize) that there is alot of head work to do for long term weight loss success. Food addictions, emotional eating, self-medicating, self-worth, body dysmorphia, anxiety, depression, anorexia/bulima are just some the the many, many issues our community tend to suffer from en masse. Yes, there is diet and exercise, your nutritionist and your personal trainer can help you with that (as can the members in this board). As for whats going on in your head, thats what the therapist is for. The folks on here can offer a sympathetic ear and suggest anecdotal solutions, but the real work can be done with a GOOD therapist (unfortunately i also do recognize good ones are hard to find). anyways, good luck, and just know its not an insult here when someone suggests a therapist...it's actually a sincere effort to help. ❤️

I haven't heard any numbers from my provider, but based on what I've heard/seen from content creators, I'd say weight loss for the first month averages 15-20 pounds. But at the same time, there are those who only lose a few pounds or none. Bodies can have a myriad of responses and response times to this surgery, it seems.

Welcome, @Clary! Thanks for sharing! Yes, it's hard to remember not to eat. I feel this especially when there's food on the break table at work. Like, my first thought is more likely to be "how much of this will I eat?" or "when will I enjoy this treat?" rather than "I'm not eating that for now." I've been watching videos or reading this forum to help me resist temptation on my meal breaks! So sorry you got undeserved criticism. I hate how people think they can make medical decisions for you when it comes to weight loss that they wouldn't even think of making for other conditions. LIke no one in her right mind would say, "But is surgery right for cancer? Can't you just eat better?" I'm ready to tell acquaintances I've had the surgery after it's over, when they can't argue with the results!
  9. As soon as I complained to my dietician that I thought my weight loss was slower than other people , she said "STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS !!!! " Lesson learned. I'm glad she was blunt . 😳
  10. Many people seem to be too afraid to do the work that's necessary to have that mind shift and therefore don't even try. "I simply can't be trusted with food." "When I don't restrict myself I'm like a bottomless bit." "I need to track every morsel of food or I'm going to gain weight." "If I eat [food x] I will inevitably binge." Same here. There's no use in what-iffing.

I'm 3 days post-op for the first 3 days everything fine, but I keep waking up after 5 hours of lying down feeling sick, I've started walking daily 1 mile to alleviate the sickness and gas today I'm down on my fluids, as I've been feeling ill, however, i will try and complete my fluids today - start weight from the initial 2-week pre-op diet was 20.08 so far I've lost including pre-op fluids 22 pounds, there was really no pain after surgery.
  12. I know - yuck! But...it's a lot harder to reach around when you're carrying a bunch of excess weight. One of those things that few people talk about, but...
  13. weight loss after revision is almost always slower than after a virgin surgery, but it can be done. You just have to really work at it..
  14. Weight loss is SO individual. Keep with your program, and you will lose weight. Between my preop diet and 2 months post op (10 weeks total), I've lost 48lbs. And i stall a lot. You got this!
  15. I just had the sleeve revision to gastric bypass on 6/13/23 and I am a little nervous now after reading a lot of these posts regarding the lack of weight loss.

i’m in the same boat i feel the same way as you both. my reason is for my health and everything else that comes with it is a nice bonus. just the confidence and comfortability will make my job much easier for me @FifiLux i hope you gain all the confidence in the world! im sure your friends don’t feel that way about you but i understand where you’re coming from
  17. I was eating 5000 or 6000 calories a day. So even without the surgery, I would have lost the same amount of weight now if at the last minute after doing Optifast - I decided to cancel the surgery was my point. I have already learned how to eat better and detoxed from bad foods. I am not going to back to how I used to be. I don't regret the surgery at all, but it does give a perspective that I probably could have achieved the same result if I maintained the same discipline that I had to get the surgery. That is where I failed with past diets. When you are "forced" to drink shakes for 4 weeks that is different than just trying to diet for 4 weeks.

    New obesity meds in progress

When I had my initial consultation with the surgeon, we discussed weight loss meds. He said that if I wanted to go that route, I would have to be on them for the rest of my life. That when I got off the meds, the weight would come back. That much, at least, is known. You're really not supposed to get off the meds.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Well, today is the day. SURGERY DAY. It's more complicated than when I had the gastric sleeve because not only are they doing a revision from sleeve to bypass, they are removing my entire lower and mid stomach (the part that is bypassed) because that's where all my polyps develop. It's a 2 hour surgery, and I was told I'll be in recovery for about an hour after. It's like having 2 bariatric surgeries in 1, so the recovery/healing/down time will be worse than my original surgery. I'll be in the hospital for 2 nights, so I'll be home sometime on Friday the 30th. That sucks, and is really annoying (I hate hospitals) but I know it's necessary and will be worth it. I can't wait to get my life back. Working out, feeling good, no more in and out of the hospital, being ME again. This has been a looooong road, but I'm finally almost at the finish line. It's gonna be awesome when I hit my weight loss goal (I'm 70 pounds away and speaking it into existence now that THIS TIME NEXT YEAR I will be at my goal weight). So wish me luck, and I'll see ya'll on the flip side

    New obesity meds in progress

Incretins like GLP-1, GIP, DPP-4 were isolated in the 1980s, these mimetic have been in trials since the 1990s and received FDA approval in the early 2000s for the treatment of Diabetes. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6497767/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5707151/#:~:text=First in man studies reported,36)amide in human subjects. What’s new is the technology (delivery, longevity, combination), indications for obesity, insulin resistant, metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular issues, PCOS and even addiction. The consensus is that these medications are long term. No need to worry about what happens if they go off of them because they are intended to be a life long commitment for most (but so is WLS). https://dom-pubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/dom.14496 As far as support with lifestyle, Wegovy (FDA approved for obesity) offers a support program https://www.wegovy.com/coverage-and-savings/get-wegotogether-support.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh6Tc2Ynm_wIV1TjUAR3YdgGuEAAYASADEgLARfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds Also Weight watchers just bought one of the biggest telehealth prescribers of this class of medications https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/weightwatchers-buys-telehealth-platform-sequence-ozempic-wegovy-rcna73753 I’m all for new tech and there hasn’t been any major breakthroughs in the management of obesity that works this well since WLS. Many candidates for WLS may never pursue it, also many WLS patients battling regain may not be eligible for revisions. The access to a pharmacological route that works is an amazing step in the right direction and I’m absolutely on board with the advancement of the science in this field.

    March 23 buddies yet?

Hi! I was sleeved on March 7th. My highest weight was 309 lbs, and my weight after the pre-op diet was 296 lbs. I'm currently sitting at 251 lbs. I'm very excited to make it to - 60 lbs, but I'm at a bit of a stall. I walk 5-6 times a week for 20-30 minutes (20 minutes moreso lately because it's so hot outside), and I also do resistance training 2 times a week. I have way more energy than I did pre-op, which is so far my favorite aspect. I'm struggling with trying to find the balance between harder and too easy workouts right now. I can eat most food, if not all food with no discomfort. I've been sick twice, but it wasn't bad and I think it was due to me eating too fast at the time. Bread doesn't sit as easily in my stomach, but I don't miss it. I don't miss sodas, but I do miss my sparkling water. 😪 I haven't been able to see a big difference on myself until recently. I still feel like I look the same, but everyone else sees a difference and that is very encouraging. I struggle with PCOS, so I am hoping that as I lose weight, my ovulatory and fertility issues will improve, too. I'm seeing a lot of small changes so far, and it's all so exciting. It's the best decision that I've ever made.

    Facial wrinkles

Congrats on your weight loss journey and prioritizing your health! As your skin adjusts to the changes, it's common to experience dryness and changes in texture. Here are a few tips to help prevent facial wrinkling: First, stay hydrated to keep your skin moisturized from within. Secondly, incorporate a good skincare routine with hydrating products, like a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Also, consider using products containing Argireline, which can help temporarily smooth out wrinkles. Remember, everyone's skin is unique, so what works for others might not work for you.
  25. Meeting with the surgeon tomorrow!! excited and nervous. I have to still be at or under my goal weight from the insurance and I am worried my body will betray me again as it did for my final weigh-in. Hopefully not though because I have to drive 3 hours to see the surgeon so a reschedule over my weight being off by one or two lbs will really put a wrench into things.  Does anyone have any advice on questions I should ask? I did write out a list, but maybe there is something you wished you would have asked pre-surgery.
