    Is VSG for me?

The link to my story is in my signature tag. Basically I am a vegetarian with multiple food and medicine allergies. I spent 3 years losing the same 35 - 50 lbs, getting sick and regaining. The sleeve helped alleviate my allergy triggers. The only time I had a hive outbreak since being sleeved was when I stopped taking my ZyrtecD. Before surgery I couldn't go a week without a severe hive outbreak. This is a game changer for me.
  2. You need to talk to your nutritionist about that. People have different schools of thought on carbs. I look more at the type of carb and the time of day I eat it. I am a vegetarian and most of my Proteins are plant based, but they are also high in carbs. The way I eat works for me and I am able to lose consistently. However I am not sure that would work for a meat eater. My carbs tendto run between 40 -60 a day and I eat between 700 - 900 calories a day.
  3. Actually I agree with that. I dont think any degree of regular PBing is OK and I really really dont think it's OK to not be able to eat any form of meat or breads for long periods of time either - Ok if you cant eat steak for example, but you have to be able to get some form of red meat in unless you're a vegetarian and know what you're doing with substituting the nutrients. Not only does that tend to make me think "too tight" it also means its very difficult to get in a balanced diet. But - if you had to have your band loose enough to allow for this, then for a lot of people, the band simply wouldnt work. So its a personal thing.
  4. Anyone get vsg who can't have dairy or doesn't eat meat?

    Stomach Growling

You poor thing. I am petrified of potatoes or anything starchy. Cottage cheese and veggie meatballs (I am a vegetarian) have been my friend. They crew up and crumble better then meat so I think that helps me.

    Anxiety Attacks????

I haven't had a full blown panic attack since being banded, but I have had some racing heart episodes. Especially when waking up in the morning. I'm going to keep an eye on it for a few more days, because last night I transitioned from mushy/soft food to ground turkey; thus starting myself back on good old animal Protein (yeah!). Interestingly, this morning I didn't have the same racing that I've had over the past weeks since surgery. I don't know if there is a correlation, but generally I'm not one who does well on a vegetarian type of diet. My body requires some sort of meat protein, whether it be fish, chicken, beef, etc. So I'm thinking that possibly the racing has been a blood sugar issue. I don't really know, but I will watch over the next few days, as this type of protein is added back. My other thought on the panic attacks, is that possibly there is a lot of underlying fear with this life change. It's huge! I don't know......just throwing out some ideas. I have a lot of underlying fear with this, especially when I read some of the posts on this site. I'm happy on one hand, then freaked out that this thing might bite me in the ass at a later date. It's a lot to take on, physically and emotionally. Now....with ALL that being said, I think you should call your doctor. Whatever the collective "our" experiences are, everyone has individual issues; health and otherwise. It's best that your doctor rule out anything more serious. And I hope for your sake that the panic attacks don't continue. I know how HORRIBLE and out of control they feel. The worst!
  7. Hello, I am working on losing 15-20 lbs to be safe for surgery. I have participated in dieting prior to this journey and was successful, but for some reason it seems 1,000 times harder right now. I am almost 31 has my body just slowed down? **YIKES** I am on the verge of breaking 300lbs and I would like to get into the 200's!! Here is what I am doing and I would love any constructive help/tips: -Drinking A LOT of Water -Logging on MyfitnessPal -Try to eat frequently with focus on Protein -I DO NOT like meals.I normally eat something about every two hours. Today I had a fat free latte and 1oz of turkey Jerky, a bit over two hours later I had a half sandwhich with low fat cheese and turkey breast -Work out videos at home. -I participate in more physical activity than I used to. - I was a vegetarian, but I am using turkey as a crutch to loose this 20lbs on my own- I struggle with this daily! -chewing 20 times per bite -eating slow -I average 1500 calories a day -70g of protein, all though I should be eating 90 What I know I am doing wrong -sometimes I am fearful of making an unhealthy choice, so I spend what feels like forever deciding what I should eat. Before I know it, my blood sugar is low and we all know what happens from here.. I then make real poor decisions about nutrition. Should I replace a meal with a Protein shake? I would love to hear your suggestions, please be gentle. I am going through a lot and I prefer kindness. Thanks for reading and sharing your strategies with me. Sannah

    Any Vegetarians??

Hello all...I am in the process of preparing for my VSG surgery in a couple of months. I wanted to hear form any vegetarians out there as to how they deal with the heavy Protein aspect of the lifestyle change. As a lacto/ovo vegetarian, I remember having to consume 80-100 grams of Proteins a day during my pregnancies. I was drinking Protein drinks every single day until my delivery dates to keep it up. So how did you prepare for your surgery and what was your diet like after?? Thanks in advance.

    Then and NOW

It took me a lot of years to figure out that I never knew how to do the " 5 pounds to play with " thing. I can do that now. I live in Southern California and love going to Disneyland ! All sorts of very not weight loss friendly foods - but there are healthier choices that can be made - and not just salads. There are really good soups in some locations, I am a fan of their corn chowder (vegetarian) and one of the Mexican places makes a yummy grilled half chicken plate that I share with my adult daughter ! I pick my treats and plan on having what I really want, whether it is ice cream or something else..... and if I gain a pound or so... then I know how to take it off over the next week. I weigh myself every morning... so that I can figure out what the heck I did or did not do in the couple days earlier to deserve weight gain, or loss. For me, I don't use much salt. And a meal out .... even a nice salad; can put pounds on me. Took me a long time to figure that out. A diet frozen dinner with less than 300 calories will do it too. Those are full of sodium and it does it every time. I cook with a lot of fresh home grown herbs - getting ready to plant my spring garden - will do lots of lettuces and baby carrots, radishes and beans and peas.... later in the spring will plant cucumbers and tons of heirloom tomatoes for the hot hot summer. Find the things that make you happy, that make your body strong and healthy and take good care of yourself !
  10. I understand. I'm a vegetarian and it's very easy to get sick of foods you eat day in and day out. I still crave meat and I haven't eaten it in 16 years. But I do eat fish a couple of times a year and never think twice about it. It's one of the healthiest animal products you can eat. I'm actually pretty bummed I may not be able to eat the amazing vegetarian sushi a local restaurant used to make just for me.

    Being Vegetarian

Yes, I've thought about it. I don't think I actually would go vegetarian, but eating certain types of meat is a pain in the butt now. I used to love beef before my surgery but now there's always gristle and it takes forever to chew down. I stick to chicken and fish.

    Being Vegetarian

i was the same ... a vegetarian for about a year. In that time my hair was glossy and my skin was clear ... weight loss was great. My body was more alkaline than it is now. I know that the ketogenic diet helps heaps with losing weight but im sure it leaves the body more acidic.
  13. I recently been drinking a lot more of a miracle weight loss and overall good health liquid. It helps me when I have the urge to eat something due to head hunger and is important not only to help me lose weight, but for proper health. It has no artificial preservatives, no additives (within reason), no artificial flavors, dairy-free, no artificial colors, is fat-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, zero calories, soy-free, the strictest vegetarian diet friendly, sugar-free and for the most part readily available for a very low cost.... It's called Water. It is available at a faucet or water fountain near you. The only problem I have is, do I have to wait 30 minutes before or after I normally drink my water throughout the day before having this liquid?
  14. Hello everyone. I really would be grateful if a few of you could make some suggestions food-wise. I was banded in December 2007 and I am now in the maintenance phase, having decided that I don't want or need to lose any more weight. The problem is that I am so bored bored bored with all the foods that I can eat and I can't eat the foods that I can't eat. Like many people I can't manage bread, rice, Pasta or potatoes in any form. I can only manage carrots in very small portions and very well cooked (or, alternatively raw and in minute quantities). I don't tolerate quorn and I am vegetarian so I don't eat meat. I get most of my Protein from Beans, lentils and pulses, which I have to chew really well. I eat things like ratatouille, vegetarian mousaka (made with soya mince and vegan cheese), chick pea curry, veggie korma (without rice and made with soya yoghurt). I can manage small amounts of couscous. I try not to snack - with "try" being the operative word. But, guys, I am soooooooooooooooo bored. It's getting really tedious. My band doesn't restrict my ability to eat biscuits and chocolates. Cakes and pastries are a bit hit and miss - some I can eat, some I can't but all fall into the "I shouldn't" category. I don't want to gan weight, but this boredom is driving me to eat things that I know I shouldn't. Please, does anybody have any good suggestions? I'm not a bad cook (according to my friends and family).

    Beans question

How far out are you? The chili sounds fine and Beans are a good source of Protein. However the nutritional breakdown of various beans makes a big difference. For example 1 cup of black beans has 116 gms carbs, 4 gms fat and 17 gm sodium & 39gm protein. Whereas 1 cup of chickpeas has 121gms carbs, 12gms fat, 48gm of sodium for that same 39 gms of protein. Neither is a bad thing, especially since it is a complex carb, especially when you are a vegetarian like me and need the protein. However, you also have ground turkey and ham in that chili so I'm pretty sure you aren't a vegetarian. In short, maybe limit your daily serving of that chili to once a day.

    Protein

I will be having surgery spring 2015 and I am trying to increase my Protein intake prior to surgery so that by the time I have my surgery it won't be such a challenge. I am a vegetarian so protein intake is already a struggle. What are some of the best sources (vegetarian) of protein that you have found and what are your favorite protein powders? Thanks!

    Vegetarian.

I’m also a vegetarian, but I’m still pre-op (likely in 6 or so months I’ll have RNY). My surgeon said that she has a lot of patients that are vegetarian.

Found a way to cheat! BAD ME!

FYI - I know for sure that red meat thing is an RNY rule. I bet it is just one of the many that got automatically transferred to the band by those docs who are used to doing the RNY. I had not heard of that "rule" about red meat until well after I had been banded, and I've never heard the bread "rule" until now. lol I eat both. Love that red meat, even though I am a vegetarian at heart... :sick
  19. congratulations! That must have been a great feeling. I loved the "thin, healthy, fit and glowing" comment. Are you a vegetarian? Can you share any info on your plant-based diet and what works best for you? (I'm a vegetarian so love to learn from VSGers ahead of me about a focus on plant foods.)
  20. Technically, lactoovopescatarian but the general public doesn't understand that. Vegetarian they get.

    Bored with food choices!

I'm going to tell you something we were taught not to do as kids; play with your food! Start with the protein you like and then spin it. Try a new seasoning, check out recipes on Pinterest or Eggface. Try a new flavor combo. One year I tried a new veg every 3 months. I discovered celery root, namé and fiddle head ferns. Go to an ethnic market and try something new. Especially if it's a lose bin market where you pay by the pound. Buy a small amount and try it out. Try vegetarian food, try Italian, Mediterranean, Indian seasonings, etc....

    Does anyone regret it?

No don't regret it I had a tough recovery for 2 months I was in and out of the hospital for dehydration because I wasn't able to eat or drink . I'm also lactose intolerant now and I wasn't before. But I'm 7 months out now and I went from 326 to 209 and I have 59 more pounds to go. Stay strong you'll get through this. Get some almond breeze almond milk. I haven't had my surgery but I gave it up about a year ago because it gave me horrendous diarrhea. (Ice cream too:/) almond milk is really good and had good protein too. I thought of it this way, your drinking another species milk, we usually tolerate it but really is it something we should drink? Especially with all the hormones and stuff we put in it. I'm far from a vegetarian but I really don't like milk anymore.
  24. Hi! My surgery is the 30th and I'm just wondering if anyone is vegetarian or vegan altho I eat chicken I hope to become vegan soon. Help?
  25. I thought it might be fun to tell some stories that could have ended in disaster, but that ended up being successful, or at least good learning experiences. I'll start. My husband and I went to an outdoor evening wedding today. Yes, it is Arizona, but it was still chilly. I was FREEZING! I had on a long dress, thick stockings, a scarf, a fleece vest and a long wool coat over that, but I got so cold waiting to go into the reception that my teeth were chattering. I had to actually go into the car and get the heater going so I could warm up. This part of weight loss is definitely NOT pleasant - in fact it is downright miserable. But then we got into the reception and meal. Wouldn't you know, there was not a single thing I could eat except some limpish salad greens that were slightly bitter and not real fresh. I cannot eat gluten or dairy. These are not uncommon problems, and the the venue actually had gluten free options - but they all had cheese and milk or butter! And the delicious looking stuffed acorn squash vegetarian dish had wheat! And to boot, I forgot to bring the protein drink I had set out to take! So i nibbled the bad tasting, dry salad greens until I just couldn't do it anymore. There was no tea or decaf coffee, but I did get the kitchen to bring me a cup of plain hot water to sip. By the time we got home I was really, really hungry. But...... on the way home, I planned out a quick meal from some left overs and popped that into the microwave right away. I did eat a spoon full of peanut butter while I was waiting for the meal to heat up. But I managed to stay on plan - at least all the food I ate were "plan" foods - not just raiding the pantry for whatever I could grab. I feel the end result was a success, but a very high risk situation, for sure. What I learned for next time: TAKE THE PROTEIN DRINK, AND a baggie of apple slices/nuts, AND a protein bar. I mistakenly thought there were be SOMETHING I could eat, but didn't fully plan on NOTHING to eat. All three of the items (drink, apple/nut baggie, and protein bar) could have fit in my purse. The evening would have been more enjoyable and I would not have been so ravenous when I got home. AND I would not have eaten later that I would have liked. Unfortunately, there is nothing I could have done about being so cold. There were girls in short dresses and bare legs, and I was bundled up like an Eskimo. I read that this will pass in 18-24 months. I sure hope so.
