    Worst dieting experience EVER...

Yep, all I can eat is meat. It's called the protein-sparing modified fast diet. I am so sick of meat that I'm thinking of becoming a vegetarian. hehe That probably won't happen but for now, I don't want to see another slice of deli meat for the rest of my life. I have to do this for 5 days. Doesn't seem like that long, until you're actually doing it. I started on Monday. I go to see the nutritionist tomorrow and a urine test will be done to see if I've been compliant. This diet puts you in a state of ketosis, and ketones are measurable in the urine. I'd be shocked if I don't pass the test. I have been 100% compliant with this diet all week. The only slight issue was that I got a green tea (black, no sugar) from Dunkin Donuts the other day and when I took a sip of it, there was cream in it. I immediately stopped drinking it. I am pretty sure that won't affect the outcome. After passing the test, I'm going out to eat. I plan on having REAL food. After doing this, I'm dreading any pre-op diet I may have to do. I'm asking the nutritionist for ALL the dieting info (pre-op and post-op) at my appointment tomorrow.

    Vegetarians...

I actually never said I was vegan or vegetarian, I am a pescetarian. I don't eat land animals. I'm nervous about telling my surgeon because they talked Protein protein protein SO much in my nutrition class. I'm afraid I can't convince him that I will get my protein in, without the help of animals. I did finally get a surgery date though, 4/16 and I go back to see my dr. on the 11th, I guess I'll talk to him then.
  3. Chickie - I read somewhere on another thread you went vegetarian. You mind saying when/at what point being banded did you go that route? Do you do dairy / fish? I must say not being here all that long that I really love you and Jaquis' view on food and exercise. I'm not sure if it's a "twist" on Western Doc vs those Down Under - but my husband just got back from Aust/NZ on business an ran into a collegaue who is banded as is he....DH was like they think of food as fuel....Dieting is not a word used, but healthy eating & exercise is SO prevalent. I love your take on the process -

    Vegetarians...

I dated a guy who was a vegan - man, I had no idea how many things we sort of take for granted that they don't touch. E.g. I tried to put Skittles in his easter basket one year. (BTW to no one in particular, eggs are considered "modern" vegetarian, fish is not). But anyway -- since you eat fish, which is very high in Protein and lean, I don't think you'll have much troubles. Nori is fairly high in protein, legumes, etc. Why not just tell your surgeon you don't eat some meats including chicken, and ask him to replace it with vegetable broth or something?

    Vegetarians...

Stacey didn't say she was vegan, she said she is vegetarian. They are not one in the same. I used to be vegetarian but never could go all the way to veganism. I like cheese too much, it's a weakness.

    Vegetarians...

Hi Stacey, I don't know that I will be a great deal of help regarding post op foods, (because I became Veggie at about 6 months post op) but I wanted to let you know that there are plenty of Veggies on the board (we are around). As a Semi-Vegetarian you will have an easier time finding protein than Vegans or Vegetarians because you eat fish. Best of luck to you.

    Vegetarians...

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I did a search and couldn't find anything. Is anyone here a vegetarian? I am (hopefully) being banded next month and am nervous about the 1st few days. My doctor has a few "rules" about what you have to do before you leave the hospital and drinking chicken broth is on that list. I haven't told him that I don't eat meat so I'm scared we will battle it out in the hospital. I did buy some vegetable broth and have unflvored powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury to add to it for when I get home. Any suggestions? Also any high Protein post-surgical suggestions would be great. I do eat seafood and eggs, and I have already stocked up on protein Water and Unjury. Thanks! -Stacey

    Has Anyone Read "Skinny B--ch"

I got it at waldenbooks. They have a deal where you can get the cookbook 1/2 price when you buy both. The book is about healthy eating. They claim people are fat because we are unhealthy because of all the nasty stuff in our food. They tout a vegetarian diet with no dairy. The book is an easy read and quite informative. However, if you are offended by cussing, watch out. The book reads like you are talking to your foul-mouthed smarta** girlfriend. I've been considering becoming a vegetarian for many years and i have made some changes, but this book is really pushing me to do it.

    I am open for suggestions.

Shakes would take the guess work out, but the lap band doesn't work with liquid calories. A Protein Shake won't help your band work because it won't stay in the banded upper pouch of your stomach. So you might be getting the protein you want, but you'll still be hungry and may end up eating more calories. A better way would be to eat solid protein that stays in your pouch longer. Then you can keep the calories down, be satisfied, and get your protein. It doesn't have to be meat if that gives you trouble. There are lots of options. Fish is a good one, tofu and soy products, a lot of the vegetarian meat substitues are very good, and eggs (egg whites) are good lean protein. I would encourage you to try measuring what you eat for a few days. You may be surprised by the actual size of your portions. This of course affects how many calories you are eating and how much nutrition you are getting from them. Part of the banding journey is learning how to eat like "normal" people...but we have to learn, and the best way to learn is to train your eyes to recognize an appropriate portion. Don't forget, "normal" people aren't banded and they aren't as restricted in how much they can eat as we are now. You shouldn't have to measure forever, but it is important to do it so you learn what the right sizes are, and to periodically go back and "remind" ourselves when things aren't going the way it seems they should. I would also suggest increasing your exercise a lot more. 30 minutes a day is a good starting point, but as you continue on, your body gets used to that activity and it no longer stimulates your metabolism like it used to. Whenever the weight loss stops, it's time to shake something up so your body doesn't get stuck in its rut. Increase your speed, or try a different, more challenging exercise. Do some sprints, where you go as fast as you can for a minute and then walk your normal pace for a few minutes. Are you doing strength training? This will help a lot. Muscle is more active than fat and helps you burn more calories. The thing about exercise is that our bodies adapt to it very quickly, so we have to keep changing things and challenging ourselves to keep the scale moving the right direction, and keep getting healthier! Good luck, I hope things get moving for you again!

    June 2007 Bandsters

Quit this diabetes talk!! Lol. It runs deeply on both sides of my family, I've had issues with hypoglycemia for YEARS and in Sept my doc told me I was insulin resistant... I'm not really superstitious (sp?) but I'm worried ya'll will jinx me! I agree with Rhonda that some people stay away from the doc so that they can't be diagnosed. haha, that is totally ME!! Fighting bad indigestion right now. I ate a vegetarian BBQ 'riblett' for lunch at 2pm today. I was OK until I got home from work today and decided to lay down to take a nap at 5pm. I slept for maybe 45 mins, and the whole time I tossed and turned, my whole chest is on fire. I tried drinking water, not helping. I ate a small square of chocolate hoping it would help. I NEVER had heartburn before banding, so I don't have any antiacids or anything. From now on when I eat one of those ribletts I'm staying UPRIGHT for more than 3 hours afterwards. Ugh. I keep thinking today is Sunday. I'm just anxious cause I'm OFF on Monday, and I need a day off. Haha. Hope you all have a brilliant and blessed Easter.

    Has anyone taken up Bycyling?

the link didn't work for me? Since LBT wasn't working eariler, I spent my morning on eBay. Lol. I'm selling my super fat clothes... and spending my prfits on things like a new Coach purse. haha. It was like 65F here today, probably warmer. I got all my windows opened at my apt... and was going to go ride my bike... But I had to realllly do laundry... and when I was done with that my med school friend wanted me to go study with her at Panera... Ugh. I had vegetarian garden soup, 3 bites of an apple, and water. I did get a couple chapters done in my ethics book though. Did I ever mention that I'm studying my RN by doing a 'self study' program. It's torture!!! I mis having lectures and assignments. Lol. ANYWAY... So a missed bycyling day for me... we'll see how the rest of the week goes. - BUT!!! I AM going to go to the gym in a few minutes. I seriously don't think I've been in the gym in like 2 months. No wonder I haven't lost any weight! I'd eat 2 gallons of ice cream a week and not exercise! It's a miracle I didn't GAIN weight! BTW - today makes 4 days ice cream free for me. And my bitch of a friend I was with today kept teasing me about going to COld Stone!! I told her I was going to bash her face into the sidewalk. I'm so dainty. Seriously though... at this rate I think I am planning a birthday party for myself AT Cold Stone. Haha. Like it, Love it, Gotta have it!

    can you feel the port?

No, I haven't added anything since then. It's not just the exercise that keeps my weight stable, it's my lifestyle. I do run anywhere up to 10km a day, but I am also a vegetarian, I eat whole, organic foods as often as I can, and I don't drink or smoke. I think it's the whole package that has allowed me to maintain this weight with very little effort for so long.

    "Smart" food

I was grocery shopping the other day and I found a section of vegetarian foods. I was wondering if anyone has tried Smart Dogs, it's a vegetarian version of a hot dog. I almost got it, but I wanted some opinions first. There were some other "Smart" foods, but I can't remember what they were. I think I remember seeing smart deli meat too! Anyone tried these?

Blood Type Diet + Lap Banders out there?

I'm kind of a medical buff and I read up on all the scientific data behind it. The doctor who spearheads it - his father, also a doctor, started off like 80 years ago or whatever doing research to see if there was a correlation between certain blood types and diseases. Guess what. There is. It's just increased risk factor, and lifestyle / eating habits have such a huge impact on it, they started looking at whether certain foods contributed to the risk factors. Guess what. They do! For example - I'm a blood type A. Most people with this blood type are apple shaped and carry fat around their belly. Check. Most people with this blood type don't tolerate red meat well - store it as fat - have allergic reactions in mucus membranes - feel tired and run down. Check check check check. Blood type Os live on red meat, burn it as fuel, feel run down WITHOUT it. My O Friends swear they could never give up meat, whereas once I tried it, I felt a million times better. I'm not all hardcore on it, but the few things I have tried have been right in line with what they said, in terms of my reaction to food, and how I feel. Being an A means I'm more agrarian (farmerish) and my diet should be mostly vegetarian with Beans, fish and SOME chicken/turkey for Protein...lots of grains, certain grains tho...and let me tell you. Eating a piece of white or wheat toast, and eating a piece of sprouted wheat toast are two COMPLETELY different experiences. There is such a noticeable difference in my bloating. Rice Pasta vs regular or wheat pasta, same thing. Rice is great for me (Hallelujah!!! CARBS!!!) and rice pasta is freaking delicious, I don't even see a difference. Anyway. It's worth looking into. Since I was aiming for vegetarian on the band anyway, this was right in line with what I should be eating. The Blood Type Diet :: Peter D'Adamo

    Baked Spaghetti Fake Out

I made this recipe as a vegetarian meal tonight for me and DH. we loved it! Thanks for sharing!
  16. This is such a shot in the dark, but after getting banded I started reading the Blood Type diet which has me going more vegetarian. I figured since the band tended to reduce meat consumption I would try it...eliminating red meat changed my body drastically!! It was great. So I'm kind of following it when I can. My biggest challenge is getting rid of dairy. I can have mild stuff like goat's cheese, mozz, ricotta, cottage cheese...and I've been investigating alternatives in soy products which has been kinda fun. Can't believe how GOOD my body feels when i'm eating 100% Blood Type Friendly foods. No wheat, no flour...but I can do rice Pasta, rice flour, even some spelt. Opening up a whole new culinary world! Curious to know if anyone else is working with the BTD and their band.

    Vegetarian Shepherd's Pie

I'm a cheese and mashed potato freak. Carbs all the way. I love my mother's Shepherd's pie but tried doing it 100% vegetarian and it was unbelievably good!! 2 heads cauliflower (1 would do, but again i needed the illusion of mashed potatoes) 1 pkg Smart Ground soy "beef" 1/2 pkg lipton Soup savory herb mix 1 yellow onion, diced 1/2 pkg Soya Kaas mild cheddar cheese (dairy free alternative)<--- by the way, this is the best non dairy cheese on the market. i've tried tons, they sucked. This is delicious AND melts properly! Whole Foods has it. 1 can tomato soup 1 - 2 cups veggies - I used roasted carrots, anything fresh or frozen 3 - 5 TBSP butter/margarine little bit of milk, optional salt, pepper I had tons of carrots leftover from juicing so I cut them up with some EVOO and salt and pepper and roasted them for 20 minutes. You can use canned green Beans, corn, peas, anything you want to use up. Once I made this with Steamfresh southwest corn...mmm!!! Those spices were great. Cup up and boil the cauliflower til mushy. Mash it like potatoes with butter, salt and pepper. I used a little bit of milk to make them creamy but they hold Water well, I didn't need it. With some EVOO, brown the diced onion then throw in the meat alternative. After about 10 minutes, I added in some Savory Herb recipe soup mix I had left over. Only needed about 1/2 a packet. Chuck the tomato sauce and whatever veggies you want into the skillet. If they are fresh or raw veggies, cook them first - frozen is already cooked so those can just get dumped in and heated. **NOTE: If you are using frozen veggies, you don't need to add water to the mixture, but if you're using pre-cooked veggies, keep an eye on the mix and add a little water as needed so it doesn't get too thick. In a casserole dish, dump in the meat and veggie mix, layer with slices of the Soya cheddar cheese, then spread the cauliflower on top. Sprinkle the top with some sea salt/fresh ground pepper and bake for about 30 minutes at 350. The cheese does take a bit longer to melt than regular cheese, so keep checking it. This recipe was so incredibly good!! Spices make all the difference with meatless meats. It's also very band friendly with tons of Protein and vegetables. Just gotta be careful with the butter and cheese. enjoy!
  18. Hey Sister Green! I love GREEN!!! What time is your fill and what day next week? Mine is on Tuesday! We can support one another after our first fills! I am finally feeling like I could eat the house! A horse and a small cow! Sorry! I remember once at work, a Father came in to visit his child and I said, "you're here just in time, I just finished eating your baby!" His face was so expressive! I imagine he sees this SMO nurse standing there admiting that she just ate his child! I realized what I said and then retracted, "no no no! I mean feeding your baby!" -- "come here! look she has all her arms and legs!" Oh my goodness! All my co-workers burst into laughter -- it wasn't funny! the Dad would tease me about it later! Another time, during my vegetarian phase -- I had 3 premies, get this - their last names were "Baby Girl Pinto, Baby Girl Bean and Baby Boy Brito" My assignment that night was a Pinto Bean Burrito! YUM! We also had a Baby Boy Riblet, BUT I had to refuse that assignment -- I was a vegetarian afterall! Okay, enough sick jokes! or worse yet, enough real life sick stories from the NICU! Love you all, dee~ I am HUNGRY AND PMS'g!!! Where did I put that Horse?

I feel bad cause I've been bad

I was told I had to do 24 hrs of clear liquids, 14 days of pureed, then 14 days of soft foods. I am a strict vegetarian who does not eat artifical sweetners so most of what I have been eating is carbs and sugar (from fruit). Thin mashed potatoes, blended potato soup, thin cream of wheat, Fruit smoothies with protein powder, some plain yougart and pudding. I really used to think I Loved carbs but one more bite of mashed potatoes and I think I will die. Veggies in the blender is GROSS. I am ready for soft so I can eat something a little more healthy. I havent been really loosing since surgery. I hope that when I can start eating other things that will change. I feel like I am eating worse than what I did before surgery.

    Has anyone taken up Bycyling?

Hi my little vegetarian buddies. I made a risotto tonight for my wheat allergic friend and her vegetarian daughter. It was sooooooooooo good. But yeah, straight up carbohydrates for me...Peas and green onions with thyme and parmesan. ZZ, One thing you can do is get a friend to hold up your back wheel and pedal the bike with their hands while you shift your gears. And see what you are doing and where the chain is moving. Most people have three on the front and most people do flat riding with the chain on the middle gear. You move to the littlest ones for going up hill (I'm pretty sure, unless I'm backward, which could be the case.) You move to big one for going faster but it takes more effort. Mostly however, you don't play with the front ones much. The back ones the rules are the same about using the littles for going up hill. I typically ride with it on the biggest one in the back, then as I hit inclines I pop one or two to help get up the hills, (or seven, then move to the little one up front, also known as the granny gear) then I pop them back down as I'm going down hill so I can pedal out of the decline and bust ass...but that's not what you need to be doing just yet. So the idea is figure out where the shifters sit when the chain is way high and way low in the back. Feel for the resistence. Also, only shift gears while pedaling. Never while you are stopped. Now, while riding the goal is to pedal consistently (cadence) and to do that quickish, not to push, grunt with each rotation of your legs. You get overly tired that way, you are giving it too much effort. But that's like cycling 207, not 102. 101, you've got down. You know what a bike is! I love that pic you posted, btw. Hope this wasn't too much information. Hope I was right too. How To Shift Your Bicycle's Gears

    Has anyone taken up Bycyling?

Daddy - Yeah.... he is gimpy (long story, but basically think of the braces that Forrest Gump had to wear on his legs - thats what my roomie gots) and he can't drive. Lol BG - TRUE! I can't wait to get the bike back tomorrow, and have a Water bottle on it. Lol. I'm going to have the guy show me EXACTLY how to make the gears work too. Lol. I admit - the bike shop smelled great (newness, rubber... Lol) and there were tons of super hot bikes. It was like going into an expensive cnady store. Damnit! As for being cold - I find myself cold alot more often now. People at work insist I just need to eat a steak. Lol. WHat is it with people being so mad when you decide to go vegetarian!? BG, do you have backlash from the meat-eaters in your life? Haha. Anyway, yeah, they think I'm anemic now. Whatever. I'm just COLD cause I am missing 92 pounds of FAT insulation that I used to have!

How long have you had your lap band?

I will move the thread to a forum that is open to the public  And here is my personal web page (it hasn't been updated in quite a while) I actually got to goal (60kg / 132lbs) in June of 2006 (I was banded in Feb of 2005 - 16 months to get to goal). By September 2006 I was down to 51kg / 112lbs, and after several small unfills I was still losing. By Christmas we just took the whole lot out to stop me from losing more weight. I have stabilized at 49kg / 107lbs. No, I am not tall at all, so the almost 300lbs I was carting around was killing me, and I knew that if I didn't work the band, and change my lifestyle I was going to drown in fat. So I started running, became vegetarian, and started living life to it's fullest. There really isn't that much to tell to be honest. My story isn't exciting or sexy... I just worked my ass off. And it paid off. Thanks!!

Share ideas, What did you eat today ?

The vegetarian sausages have a sick amount of protein and fiber! I am trying to eat 3 400 calorie meals per day for a total of 1200 cals. I know that seems like a lot compared to some people on here who eat 600-800 cals but if I go below that I get so hungry I am about to eat my own arm off! So I eat the whole package for either breakfast or lunch. I think it had like 400 calories and 45 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber, for the whole thing. They taste amazing! It's like thinking you are eating something greasy and bad and in reality you are eating veggies with all of the protein and fiber you need for the day! Plus I find that fiber really helps weight loss because it basically goes right out of you. I have also been eating this weight loss oatmeal and its great because it has a ton more fiber than regular too.
