    Exercise Before Surgery

I didn't do any exercise before surgery, mostly because I was working crazy hours at work getting me out of daily tasks in case I was not able to get back to work as soon as I hoped. I didn't really do any exercise after surgery either, except for walking. My spouse and I after a couple months were walking 8-10 miles 4 days a week, mostly on the Las Vegas strip. Once I got to only 100 pounds overweight I decided to challenge myself to a running program similar to the 'Couch to 5K' (C25K) which get's you running 5k (about 3 miles) in a month. Turned out I enjoyed running and kept doing it, virtually every day and eventually up to 90 miles per week. Exercise for it's own sake is not something I care to do. Doing things that I enjoy that are also exercise is what works for me. I wish I could still run, but that ship sailed 15 years ago when my chronic pain issues reared it's ugly head. On your pain meds, you obviously take them for a reason. After surgery after you aren't carrying a lot of extra weight it may be possible to reduce or eliminate them. For me, the pain meds allow me to be active enough to care for my spouse. Good luck. Tek

    Exercise Before Surgery

Starting to exercise 3 weeks before surgery isn’t gonna change much of anything. Besides you can’t exercise for 6 weeks after. When your six weeks are up ease into something slowly. Hopefully loosing weight will make it easier on your body to move more without being in pain. Best of luck on your surgery & weight loss!
  3. Hello all, I'm currently on my final week of my liquid diet and I was wondering if anyone had good pureed food recipes? Because all I can think of is mashed potatoes and apple sauce; and does anyone know if smoothies or overnight oats count? Would greatly appreciate any effort to giving me some recipes as I'm currently at a loss for what I can do.

    Exercise Before Surgery

If walking bothers you, maybe you can do some weight lifting, instead..? Or maybe you can join an aquatic fitness class..? I don't know how much of an impact 3-week's worth of exercise is going to have on your surgical outcome. But, I'm sure every little bit helps. The problem with narcotics is that they will cause you to have pain, so that you have to take them. You might have an easier time weaning off of them, rather than just cold-turkey quitting.
  5. Happy Tuesday Everyone!! So since I was three weeks out yesterday I decided that it's time to exercise before surgery. I have moderate osteoarthritis and when triggered there is hell to pay. I decided to go on a thirty minute walk around the neighborhood and I couldn't even do that without causing a flare-up after and being in extreme pain to the point of crying. I have been on tylenol codeine #3 for arthiritis flare ups 3x daily and yesterday I decided to cut it out completely because I want to get rid of as many pills as possible in my system before surgery. Normally I would just take those and be fine but that wasn't an option yesterday and it was really bad. My point is I can't even walk continuously for long without being in extreme pain. I'm not bed ridden or anything just can't do it continuously and briskly like I hoped. My point is how important is exercise before surgery? I have a tread mill and I'm going to try that today. Maybe straight walking on my joints was too much. Do you think not exercising much before will hinder my recovery or increase my chance of complications? This arthiritis, aside from my family and quality of life of course, is a main reason I decided enough is enough I'm doing this!

    TMI Semi Liquid Diet Diahrrea

So I'm going to be eating the same thing everyday which is: Breakfast: premiere protein shake Snack: Sugar free jello Lunch: Campbell Soup with fat free milk, added protein Snack: Sugar free pudding Dinner: Ground beef or Chicken Salad Snack: 100% grape juice Popsicle For dinner I've been putting tomatoes, shredded lettuce, Salsa, cheese, and sour cream on my meat. Right now I'm allowed to eat way more than this according to my doctor but I made this meal plan up for myself because I want to lose weight and shrink my liver before surgery. Any thoughts on this diet haha. When I hit the two week till my surgery stage I'm cutting out the meat salad 😭😭
  7. When I had the Petersens hernias (which create blockage because loops of intestine have slipped through a hole in the sac that keeps your guts in place / sorry forgot name of it!) I had intermittent pain. It was hard to describe- crampy mainly, pressure a bit - I’d get relief from going on hands and knees and rocking my hips- looking back that may have helped loops to slip back in. anyway I went to emergency departs twice or three times - showing a text from my wls surgeon which said Petersens hernias likely please do a cti. They did x/rays which won’t show the issue - or the tear which causes it and sent me home. Another time they said why wasn’t surgeon seeing me himself - was past date when he had to under the private contract- they said he’s a rich man he should see you. (He’d just retired as senior consultant at that hospital which is a bariatric centre) my pain had gone by this time as I’d not attempted to eat or drink in 24 hours (I’d told them that too) and they sent me home insisting I did it properly with a go referral. which I did. got an appointment at same hospital -told will re it’s d be in touch within six weeks. Call next day - oh we have a cti cancellation can you pop in. Did so and they then had another magic cancellation to schedule repair op. Turns out half my small intestines had migrated through this tear. Shiny new doc told me this and older once shushed it down as they were obvs worried I’d litigate. I was just pleased not to have died. Petersens used to happen after peptic ulcer ops and were common- changes in treatment of ulcers made them more rare - they’re increasingly common again as post wls issue. so - point of this long post - intermittent issues- and this happened over a six month period- need checking out too. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out which foods caused it and it was actually just the food moving - or intermittently not, through my small intestines…
  8. I know that sounds like an obvious statement, but despite the preparation, the consultations, dietitian advice as well as discussion with various doctors including the primary surgeon, I realized how much of this is on me and changing my thinking in relation to food. I never thought of myself as food fixated, or dependent. I certainly understand addiction and dependency from other things but food was always not only fuel, but a joy. I have fond memories of meals past; some of the great restaurants of the world, and the funky dives where I got a good meal. I'm in a new place. I can only eat a few bite before I feel almost full. Cross that line and it gets disgusting fast. So, food, for now, is something I have to be very careful of consuming. Some things are readily digestible, other things, not so much. (I'm 8 weeks out from surgery, a baby but I gotta be responsible). I realized that part of this is my mental attitude toward what I put into my body. It's like I have a much finer, more delicate filter. I certainly haven't gone to extremes but realize how sensitive my system is and it is my responsibility to follow through from the surgery to small steps in eating and exercise. Given the hiatal hernia repair, I'm still a time slot away from weight lifting. That's what draws me to the gym- treadmill stuff is a joke- there's a thing called a speed board that is not motorized, and requires your leg power to make it move. It require balance as well. Very expensive to own one, and none of the gyms where I am seem to have one. So I walk in mega stores. But I'm planning ahead-- I'll plug in with a couple different MD types over the next couple weeks- checking bloods- I feel undernourished, but I can't handle the volume of food I would ordinarily consume without thought. So I have to be mindful- and that is my main point-- you have a duty to yourself to be cautious about what you intake- both in terms of texture and in terms of volume. It seems like a couple of bites of 'regular food" gets me close to full; soft stuff, like soup, is easier. I'm taking all the supplements but am interested to see what the blood work shows. In the meantime, I'll say that this is a huge upward learning curve that I have taken on, despite the preparation and I think I had good medical and related advice to prepare me. It's just the transition from intellectual to real world. I'm learning.....

Is it dumping or just upset stomach

I wondered if it could be a lactose intolerance which we can develop post wls. Diarrhoea, bloating, wind are the usual symptoms an hour or so after eating lactose. Sugar alcohols (in some artificial sweeteners) can do the same thing. And yes, as the others have said, dumping has many more symptoms which are temporarily debilitating. I don’t know about the beef. I was easily eating steak & pork pretty soon out after solid foods (probably from around weeks 9 or 10). But we are all different & our tummies can be fussy & sensitive for a time about certain foods.

Did you mean Pre op diet? If so, yes. I had diarrhea for nearly a week. First day was the worst and it steadily improved from there.

Scar Tissue From Previous Abdominal Surgeries

I had a giant ovarian cyst removed in 2013. Like, gallon of milk giant. It had adhered to my bowels and pretty much everything it could. They nicked my bowel in 3 spots removing the cyst. (Hysterectomy in 2000 but they took both ovaries with the cyst and my gall bladder for its own reasons, I'm always a special case.) Forward to my sleeve a week ago, and my surgeon said that my bowel is adhered to my small intestine and had she been 2 inches to my left, she'd have been in my bowel. Scary thought! I joked I should get a tattoo there in case of emergency... Sounds like your surgeon is well prepared!

Nausea and incredible amounts of pain over a few hours resulted in an ER trip and week long stay. Forward to my sleeve a week ago, and my surgeon said that my bowel is adhered to my small intestine and had she been 2 inches to my left, she'd have been in my bowel. Scary thought! Had she listened, my gall bladder would have been removed in 2010.

    Pre-gastric bypass

    From the album: Janelle

I was sleeved in 2016, and due to circumstances, I could not control, death in my family of three people, I started gaining weight. I lost my husband in 2021 to a heart attack. I have decided to go with gastric bypass to take care of my GERD.

Is it dumping or just upset stomach

Dumping can make you feel faint, weak, loopy, can cause your heart to race and even cause you to faint...if it's just diarrhea it's probably something that's a little less severe than that. Are you six months out or are you 15 weeks out? At 15 weeks, beef may be more than you can handle. At that time, I was making chili at home with ground turkey which was much easier to digest.
  17. Stairs after surgery

The literature they gave me at the hospital said to "walk, walk, walk" and that "stairs were ok." However, I wasn't allowed to get on the treadmill until my 3rd week out. (Maybe more because of the risk of falling?) Probably best to ask your medical team, and definitely listen to your body. If it were me, I'd stay on the first floor for at least the first week. At least until all of the anesthesia is out of your system, and you're no longer using pain meds which can cause dizziness, grogginess, and improper balance.
  21. I have sleep apnea, arthiritis, fatty liver and high cholesterol and am scared as well but I'm also scared of all of these conditions I have and developing more later in life if I don't take control of my obesity. So I have made the decision to go through with the surgery for reals this time and not cancel like twice before. All I can do now is do everything I can to help this surgery go smoothly. I'm three weeks out and am following a semi liquid diet (even though my doctors office told me it wasn't necessary because I know shrinking my liver and more weight loss before surgery is safer and better) I take all my supplements and more (with Dr approval) I make sure to get my protein in to promote faster healing and I've begun therapy/support groups. I'm going to try to take as little pain medication as possible after surgery because too many opiods and surgery dont mix. It seems like all these "celebrity deaths" (Kanye west mother, Lisa marie presleu) after surgery had opiods as a factor. I currently had been taken tylenol codeine #3 (a mild opiod) three times a day for arthiritis and that stopped today. I'm not taking any chances even with this mild one. When I have pain I will use creams or tens therapy or hell even book a massage but I am doing everything In my power to prevent complications. I've read books and gained a lot of knowledge about the surgery and have asked patients here how they've done it. That's all we can do and then leave the rest up to God/the powers that be.

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hope everyone is well! I have had a slow month so far, only about 2.5lbs but can't blame anyone but myself. Went on vacation and ate everything I saw lol I drank also which I was not doing and this caused major swelling on my ankle, and have not exercised in 3 weeks. However, I'm able to fit some shorts that I purposely bought a smaller size. I am 11lbs from my original goal of 180 so that's a big plus, my second goal is 160 but I may fall somewhere in between 165-170 depending on how I feel. I think after I hit 170 , I will not look so much at the number on the scale but how I feel. Funny that now I can see my stomach roll and dare to complain but it shows me that I'm no longer hiding and afraid to see myself in the mirror.

    Sleeping help

I was walking in the hospital. By the 4 day I didn’t need to take any pain meds. Sure had the odd twinge but walking in lying up & down stairs, wasn’t an issue except from an energy & lethargy perspective. But we all recover differently. If you’re still experiencing pain that is restricting you from performing basic activities, after a week & your pain meds aren’t managing it, contact your team. You’re sleep may be off because you’re not very active & may be napping during the day. (I miss those nana day naps). Also the hormonal flush associated with weight loss could be upsetting your sleep patterns. Yes, check with your team before taking any meds, over the counter or prescribed, just to be sure as @summerseeker suggested.

@sleevedinthe817 yea I had family in town for 2 weeks and they just left. Idk what it is but I hope this feeling goes away. Do we need more protein like what gives us energy? It’s all still worth it tho I just wish I could skip to the 6 months post op lol.
