  1. I guess this is an odd question, because I know every single one of us is different, but what is a reasonable expectation of weight loss every month? I see everything from 40 pounds in 6 months to 100 pounds in 6 months. That's such a huge gap. I just don't know how to know if I'm "on track". Has anyone here researched this or found a website that sorta answers this question?

    NOT HAPPY

Week 4 today. So I feel great, walking a lot, get my protein and water in and can start ground turkey and chicken this week. Everything has been going great until I started having severe pain in right calf. Leg swollen - checked for blood clots - negative. Went to Orthopedist yesterday have to have MRI could be hair line fracture due to going from little exercise to full blown exercise. He said bones not getting enough recovery time. Soooooo NO EXERCISE at all. What am I going to do? This stinks!
  3. I have a quick question -with the problems i have been having laltey i am trying to be very careful with my food... I am trying to measure everything -- my question is this.. when measuring your foods.. now my dr say 1 cup/8oz of food should i be measureing up to 8 oz on a scale or what would fit in a 1 cup measuring cup?? very confusing lol.. wish me luck thursday i go see the surgeon again to see what is going on here - very slow weight loss - possibly a leaking band..uggg im scared.

    average weight loss

Someone posted this on another thread. Just remember everyone is different. I know my doctor didn't really allow me to have any food even pureed, for almost 2 weeks so I lived off of Protein drinks Jell-O, broth and Water until then. In the first five and a half months I'm down 100 pounds. My weight loss has slowed down substantially but that's okay I'm still trying my best to stay on track. I'm only losing 1 to 2 pounds in a week now. Best of luck on your journey! Sent from my LG-H740 using the BariatricPal App

Wine 2 days in a row

You probably didn't do a lot of damage to your weight loss, but the reason for no alcohol is to prevent tissue damage to the surgical sites. Alcohol can cause erosions and ulcerations - even years later. I know everyone makes their own decisions, but personally, I think it is best to avoid alcohol forever after WLS. I am a GI nurse and the worst ulcers I have ever seen are in WLS patients who started drinking again. It is pretty horrible. These tissues seem to remain fragile forever, and we need to do all we can to take care of them. I gave up sugar because I don't want dumping. I gave up coffee and alcohol because I don't want ulcers. Gave up soda, as I already had fatty liver disease, and soda contributes to it (diet as well as regular.) Gave up simple carbs because I don't want to be fat! BUT...... got a whole new life that is so precious and worth taking care of.

    Unfortunate Life Event

I'm so so sorry about the loss of your mother. Hugs I understand how you feel as I was there. I went on holiday on and off for 3 months and only in May I was able to get back on track. I gave myself mini-goals in order to get back on track. Mini-goal 1 drink my water everyday. mini-goal two cut out the sugars and carbs. mini-goal 3 go to the gym at least 4 times a week 1.5hrs each session. Mini-goal 4 get my protein in etc. I can only imagine in your situation it may be harder but try to keep your focus on the goal. Lots of hugs for you.

What do you mean "prepared"? Did you actually have bald spots in your hair? Or just thin?

    Hair Loss

Hair loss doesn't occur for everyone especially if you're taking in all the proper vitamins and nutrients on top of everything else your surgeon and nut recommends

    Day 2

I was banded yesterday:thumbup:, June 17 and everything went well. Dr. Chua, in Milwaukee, WI, is an excellent surgeon! He found out I had galls stones and my gallbladder was removed during surgery. Minimum pain after 2 days is at # 3. No gas/shoulder/neck pains yet. Just a little soreness. I thank God that he brought me this far and I will do my part to work toward completing my weight loss goal.

    Hair Loss

Debly, I, too, had a relatively low BMI, around 36. I've dieted all my life, losing and gaining. Every decade that went by, I managed to pack on an additional 10 lbs. I never thought I was "that fat" and I thought I carried it well, because I didn't look as heavy as what the scale said. In my 30's, the dr would say I needed to lose weight. In my 40's the dr would say I need to lose weight. When I turned 50, the dr said that I needed to be on BP and cholesterol meds because of my weight. I went on a serious diet and couldn't lose, went to several hypnotists and couldn't lose, in fact, I gained more. So, I opted for surgery. I don't know how old you are, but believe me, age works against a person. When I was younger, this surgery wasn't available. I wish it had been. Although, I'm not too far out (3/12/12), I know I'm going to be glad I had this done. Better late than never. From what I understand, the hair loss is temporary, and you can do supplements to minimize it. And, since the health aspect of losing weight is the most important thing to me, I think....no one has ever had a stroke from thin hair! So, hair loss is unfortunate, but secondary of concern to me, at least.

    Just getting started

I have just started my medically supervised weight loss. My insurance requires 3 months. I meet with my Dr. next week. He told me to just keep a food journal. I had to do that for the first 2 weeks. I am not sure what he will say next week. I meet with the nutritionist next week and have an appointment for my psych eval on July 31st. I don't have a date set yet. It sounds like you are close!

    Ban Hell

It does get easier... hang it there. Once you get your first fill you will notice a difference. Do you feel any restriction at all now? I actually felt some restriction before my first fill. I had 4 fills in total. Try and drink Water and make sure your eating lots of Protein that will help you feel full and also include a snack. I snack on chunks of turkey with a great dip made with Miracle Whip light. Hang in there !! Tom, Toronto Banded July 6 06 Wt. Loss: 156 lbs tomander@bell.net
  16. Hateration! I hate to say that some people just don't want to compliment you when you are doing well. A 70 lb loss on anyone is recognizable. So don't worry and keep doing you. Congrats!

    5 days no hydro

After I wrote the last thread we lost power almost immediately....5 days I lived on raw veggies and bread and fruit....A little meat as well..But very little.....Just another cog in the wheel.... I thought that there would be a lot of expressions in my last thread but only a few of you saw the need to respond.....I understand, it is not easy to respond to a downer at times..... My son in law just came back from the Philippines and he said I did not look smaller but that I grew more hair..Excellent I thought....I am still getting my hair back!!!!! That is a positive thing for me...Now I have to get the house back together and make a real dinner...!!!!

    pre-fill restriction?

Your first fill probably won't have much effect, other than making you a little sore for a day or so. Some people don't feel any effect. I didn't, but my band was filled and then emptied because I had a 38 lb weight loss so a fill wasn't necessary. You need to relax a little, this isn't that bad. A fill will probably give a little restriction for a few days, then you'll be right back where you were. If your weight loss is enough, a good surgeon may choose not to give you a fill until you either stop losing or begin to have hunger you can't control.
  19. Hello! I am looking to introduce myself and possibly get some advice or insight from others! I had a VSG in October of 2016. Weight DOS was 288, lowest weight I reached was 198 within about 6 months of the procedure. I developed terrible reflux that I managed with OTC medications, and maintained this weight loss almost effortlessly (I did go to the gym 4-5x weekly and ate small portions - stuck to the rules as best as I could) until the end of 2019. But to backtrack a little - I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2018, so by the time I was through with chemo, steroids, horrible lethargy...you get the picture... the weight piled back on within a year of finishing treatment, and by the end of 2019, I had gained 60lbs back. I am in no way trying to play the "cancer card" or blame it on that, I know I am fully responsible for the way my weight journey has turned out, but if I had to pinpoint when it started to go downhill, I'm pretty sure it aligned with that. Presently, I am at 261 and am seeking a revision due to the reflux, a severely dilated fundus that was seen on both a CT and an endoscopy, and the weight regain. I guess I am just looking for others who are also seeking a revision, or others who have recently had one who may have any words of wisdom! Lastly, I have Harvard Pilgrim and my authorization has been submitted by my surgeon and is now in the "pending medical review" stage. Anyone else with HP, roughly how long did it take to hear back? My program coordinator said anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks, but I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience. Thank you for reading and I'm looking forward to "meeting" more people on here!

    One Month Until Surgery

The feelings are perfectly normal. I keep waiting for the loss to stop. I probably won't believe it until I am at goal. Sounds like you are ready that it is just the waiting to get going...you will do great! Hang in there and soon you will be on the other side and losing those pounds! Don't worry if others notice so much as you will see it and you will feel so much better!

    My Nutritionist....

I was fortunate to have a great team at the Kaiser Options program beginning last September 2011 - classes once a week with a group, 6 sessions with the nutritionist and 6 with a behavioral therapist to help us uncover the emotional components of our eating habits and getting us ready to deal with many life situations and life after surgery. The nutritionist guided each of us in our pre-op weight loss (10% loss expected prior to surgical approval) I was started on 1400-1600 calories for 4 weeks, 1200-1400 for the next 4 weeks, and then 1200 from that point forward. It helped alot to do the tracking and at that time keeping a manual log, eventually I moved over to myfitnesspal.com, it's easy and the database has tons of values already there for you to just click the button. Today I'm six weeks out from surgery and from last Fall, I am down 60 pounds. The weight has come off slow but steady, even after surgery, but I am making subtle changes that I hope will increase the rate of my loss, mainly cutting carbs and increasing physical activity. Mostly I was doing daily walks on my breaks, and I bought some resistance bands to use at home, and a couple of exercise DVD's including Richard Simmons - Sweatin to the Oldies. Anything to get that heart pumping and burn some extra calories. You sound like you have a good attitude. Keep that up and try hard to follow any plans your medical team has for you. Good Luck!

    weight loss stall...help

Hello, FYI if you go to the search bar and type in weight loss stalls, click on the down arrow and choose forum under topic, over 1000 forum results will show up. A lot have good information and share suggestions. Everyone is different. Remember, it takes 3-4 months for you body to adjust to major surgery. Your body is still healing. That being said, this is not a miracle cure, but a tool. There will be times when the scale will not reflect weight loss, however, you body is losing inches. Be patient! Good luck in your journey.

    Loose skin

I don't know how much weight you have to lose, but if its a lot I doubt a lotion or cream is going to help it retract as you lose weight. It may help with the look of some of the stretch marks. It can take up to a couple of years for skin to retract as much as it is likely to, and that depends on many things - age, weight lost, history of yoyo dieting/big weight losses/gains, genetics, environment. Look to the most expensive cream/lotion you were going to buy and starting putting that money away into a savings account (maybe once or twice a month), at the end of a year or more you will have some funds for new clothes or the beginning of a savings account for skin removal (if it is needed).

    Financing

Self pay… Since my insurance doesn’t cover weight loss assistance I am on my own to find a way to get this taken care of. Any recommendations from those who also had to finance this procedure? I have been thinking about getting a personal loan from my bank in the hopes of getting a low interest rate, I really don’t think I can stomach more than having 8.25% interest. So far I’ve checked intro Health One Financial and they gave me a ball park of what they offered which was 11-22% inertest rate. I about fainted. Any advice? I’m all ears.
  25. Hello fellow NY and other sleevers! I'm a newbie but have been lurking awhile! I am in the beginning stages. I had my initial workup 14 mos ago and a follow up last month. I'm in the Albany Medical Center program. Anyone else had their procedure there? I'd love to connect... Ive done a ton of research and definitely hope the sleeve will be approved by my insurance. (MEDICARE) BY the time I'm prepped and ready! I have my initial nutrition consult and education in 2 weeks. I've lost 10#s towards my necessary loss. I finally understand that its a "tool" - one of many that will help me get healthy. I look forward to moving ahead with you and receiving tips & tidbits as well as encouraging you on the journey! !
